Hill battles Lehman for putting glory

By Blaze Fugina bfugina@echopress.com A hot putter was able to overcome youth and the help of a cousin as Todd Hill defeated Jackson Lehman in the annual Resorters Golf Tournament putting contest on Wednesday night.

Hill, a golfer in the Resorters executive division, sealed his victory over Lehman, 12, in the annual competition by grabbing a three-hole lead with only one left to play. Hill joked that he battled support from a proLehman gallery to win the contest.

“It feels great,” Hill said.

“It was a grueling final there with Jackson; he really took it to me in those final holes.

And everyone was against me in the finals.”

Part of Lehman’s strategy

throughout the competition was to have his cousin, Sean Lehman, assist as his caddie.

Jackson defeated his cousin in the first round of the competition and convinced him to help out.

“Sean is my lucky caddie, my lucky charm,” Lehman said. “I think he lost in the first round to me so he caddied for me.”

The trip to the finals required five match victories for both Lehman and Hill.

Lehman defeated Gage Grimes in the semifinals while Hill defeated Josh Griner.

Grimes took third place in the competition by defeating Griner in the consolation match.

Top seeds advance in Junior 13-15 Division The top three seeds survived the second round of championship flight match play on Wednesday morning in the Junior 13-15 Division as the field dwindled to four golfers.

Top-seeded Reece Sanders, second-seeded Ben Sigel and thirdseeded Miles McCarthy all advanced to the third round with victories on Wednesday. Fifth-seeded Jacob Zosel also survived on a 2-1 victory over Hunter Rebrovich.

The third round of Junior 13-15 Division action will take place starting Friday on a noon tee time to decide which two golfers will advance to the championship match.

SANDERS DEF. ODLUND, 8-6 Sanders rolled to another quick victory on Wednesday with an 8-6 win over Alexandria’s Will Odlund.

Sanders took a 6-up lead over Odlund after the completion of the back nine thanks to a sixhole win streak that started on No. 4. Sanders birdied No. 1 to take a 7up lead, and then he finished off the victory with another birdie on No. 3.

ZOSEL DEF. REBROVICH, 2-1 Hunter Rebrovich led 1-up after play was completed on the back-nine, but Jacob Zosel ended up prevailing in the second half of the match for a 2-1 victory.

Rebrovich carded a par on No. 16 and a birdie on No. 17 to grab a 2-up lead in the first eight holes of the match. That lead would dwindle to 1-up after play was completed on the back nine thanks to a bogey by Zosel on No. 18.

Zosel followed that by carding a par on No. 1 to tie the match after 10 holes.

The tie would last until Zosel made his move

Adams grabbed a 1-up lead right away on No. 1 with a birdie, but the lead would only last one more hole. Sigel birdied No. 3 and parred No. 4 to take his first lead of the match, 1-up. Sigel’s lead would grow to 2-up after 13-15 Page 9

Top seeds advance in Junior 10-12 Division The top four seeds in the Junior 10-12 Division advanced to the second round of championship match play on Wednesday morning.

First seeded Braeden Sladek, second seeded Gabe McKeown, third seeded Grant Rebrovich and fourth seeded Davis Johnson all advanced to the division’s final four.

The two semifinal matches will tee off on Friday at 9:36 a.m. from the 10th tee to decide who will play for the Junior 10-12 Championship Division.

SLADEK DEF. CAROTHERS, 4-3 Alexandria’s Sladek continues to shine – first as medalist and now as a first round winner.

Sladek started his match against Joe Carothers with a bogey on No. 10, good enough to halve the hole.

He then took the next two holes with a bogey and a birdie to go 2-up.

After they both settled for bogey on the next hole, Sladek closed out the match with a par win followed by a bogey victory on No. 15 to win it, 43.

JOHNSON DEF. LEHMAN, 3-1 In a battle between 11year-olds, Davis Johnson of Chaska never fell behind against Sean Lehman of Scottsdale, Arizona.

Starting from the back nine, Johnson won No. 10 and 11 with birdie and par. Lehman’s bogie was a winner on the par-5 12th hole but Johnson kept his cool. He won Nos. 13 and 14 to go 3-up.

Lehman tried to battle back and won No. 15 with a bogey but he could only match Johnson’s bogey on the next hole and still trailed by two with two holes to go. The match ended on No. 17 when

Grimes dominates fourth Women’s State Open

Winning her first Minnesota Women’s State Open 10 years ago, PGA professional Lisa Grimes fired a 3under par 70 Tuesday at Town and Country Club to capture her fourth-career title by eight strokes.

Grimes, the director of instruction at the Alexandria Golf Club, held a two-stroke lead after carding a 1-under par 72 during Monday’s opening round. She only increased her lead as she cruised to victory with four birdies and one bogey during the final round to finish at 4-under par 142.

That was eight shots better than McKenzie Neisen, who finished second at 150.

After winning the championship in 2004, Grimes became the first woman to win multiple times, as she hoisted the trophy again in 2006.

Katie Bakken matched Grimes’ record by winning her second championship in 2007, before Grimes won her third title in 2012.

“I look forward to this tournament,” Grimes said of her success at the Women’s State Open. “I like the different venues we’ve played at, during the summer I don’t get away much to play a lot of nice courses.”

“There are a lot of good players out here and I’ve been playing with a lot of them for a little while, but it’s fun to watch them. I learn things from them and I hope that they learn things from me,” Grimes said.

Neisen, New Prague Golf Club, won her first amateur tournament Wednesday, by defeating Minnesota Gopher Anna Laorr during the Minnesota Women’s State Match Play Championship.

In her final tournament before leaving for Stillwater, Oklahoma to begin her freshman season at Oklahoma State University, Neisen carded a 1-over par 74 during Tuesday’s final round to finish second at 150.

“I felt pretty good about the tournament,” Neisen said with her usual smile. “It was more of a scramble the last two days. The short game felt pretty good, so that was a big confidence booster and my putting felt really good again.

I got up and down and made some good saves.”

“I’m really excited for college golf,” she said. “High school golf was super fun and I had a great finish with some great people and it’s time to move on to the next step.”

Rebrovich took a 2-up lead after three holes thanks to a par on No. 1 and a bogey on No. 12.

Hagen reduced the advantage by one after picking up a par on No. 13.

A par by Hagen on No. 16 put the golfers allsquare heading into the final hole of the match.

That is when Rebrovich’s bogey helped him advance to the semifinals of Junior 10-12 Division play.

The lead remained at 2up for the rest of the match as Sigel prevailed on No. 8.

MCCARTHY DEF. GUGGISBERG, 5-3 Glenwood’s Ashlyn Guggisberg fell 5-3 to Miles McCarthy of Tonka Bay after a match that was close through nine holes.

McCarthy was never able to gain more than a 2-up lead on Guggisberg through play on the back nine as the golfers were tied on multiple occasions. McCarthy led by one heading into the front nine thanks to a No. 18 victory on a par.

Guggisberg tied the match again thanks to a birdie on No. 1, but McCarthy made his move starting on the next hole.

McCarthy won five straight holes thanks in part to two consecutive birdies and a par. Another final par on No. 6 put the finishing touches on a 5-3 victory.

Top seeds prevail for Seniors

The perennial powers continued their quest for a championship, but not without a little bit of a scare for two-time defending champion Steve Herzog.

He outlasted AJ Kluver by a 2-up score, while Jon Empanger and Jim Arnold will both join him in the quarterfinals. JT Johnson, Larry Novotny, Jeff Pederson, Mark Redman and Steve Gergen will also still be in the hunt when they take to the first tee starting at 12:18 today.

Here’s a look at how all of them got here.

HERZOG DEF. KLUVER, 2-UP Herzog had to work for it on Wednesday as fellow Alexandrian AJ Kluver pushed him before coming up short in a 2-up match.

Kluver led this one early after birdie wins on 5 and 6 moved him to 1up. Herzog answered right back with a birdie win of his own on 7 as the

two went to the back all square.

Herzog made his move on the 12th hole with a birdie win before a par win on 13. Kluver got one back on 16 with a par and that forced them to play an 18th hole with Herzog holding a one-hole lead.

The defending champ knows how to put matches away and he did it again on Wednesday.

His birdie sealed the deal for him and helped him survive and keep his three-peat chances alive.

JOHNSON DEF. FREEMAN, 4-3 JT Johnson built a 5-up lead on the front and made that last against Alexandria’s Bill Freeman in a 4-3 match.

Johnson got off to a torrid start with birdies on 3, 6 and 7 that put the pressure on Freeman to shoot low.

The damage had already been done by the time Freeman won his first two holes on Nos. 10 and 11. Johnson answered right back with another birdie win on 12 before his par win on 15

ended things after Freeman had just taken 14 with a par.

PEDERSON DEF. MATTSON, 3-2 Jeff Pederson never let perennial contender Greg Mattson get a lead on Wednesday as he held him at arm’s length to secure a 3-2 win.

The Haymarket, Virginia resident took his first lead with a par win on 4 before adding two more of those on Nos. 8 and 9.

Mattson’s only win came on 13 before Pederson answered back with a birdie win on 14. That was enough to end things two holes early as they halved Nos. 15 and 16 for Pederson to secure the win.

Novotny is on a roll through his first two rounds after a 5-4 win on Tuesday was followed with a 5-3 win over Roger Ledebuhr on Wednesday.

Novotny trailed by one after three holes before he used a par win on 4 to pull even. It took until 7 before he got his first lead with another par win, but it was his first of three straight wins that allowed him to take a 3up lead into the turn.

Novotny added to that on the back. His wins on 11 and 12 left him 5-up and allowed him to put the match away after a par win on 15 erased the win Ledebuhr had on 14 to pull within four.

Arnold led by six after play on the first nine holes, thanks to pars on Nos. 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8, plus a bogey on No. 9.

Another par on No. 10 gave Arnold a 7-up lead that he held over the next two holes for the 7-6 victory.

It has been a fast start to the tournament for Arnold. He started with a qualifying score of 68 on Monday before a 5-4 win in his opening-round match on Tuesday. Mark Redman will be the one to try and slow him down now as the two square off in the quarterfinals today.

REDMAN DEF. RYAN, 19-HOLES The closest match of the day in the Senior Division went to Redman as he outlasted Tom Ryan of Edina in 19 holes.

Redman used a birdie win on 1 and a par win on 2 to grab the early lead.

Ryan answered back with wins on 5, 6 and 8 to take his first lead of the day before Redman used a par on 10 and a birdie on 11 to move back to 1up.

Two holes later, it was Ryan’s turn as he evened the match with a par.

Redman put the pressure on with a birdie win on 15, but Ryan answered with a par win on 17 to force extra holes.

It took just one for Redman to get the job done.

Ryan opened the door a little with a bogey, and Redman took advantage of that with a par win that sealed the victory.

Champions prevail in Men’s Division Can Jerry Rose do it again?

The four Men’s Division competitors who have won Resorters’ titles in the past all survived yesterday’s first round.

Defending champion Casey Vangsness breezed to a 7-6 win. His brother, Ben, the division’s 2011 and 2012 champ, prevailed, 3-2.

Nick Heinen, a two-time champion in the Resorters’ Junior Division and last year’s runnerup, outlasted Casey Anderson, 3-1.

And Resorters’ legend Jerry Rose, a three-time champion, knocked off medalist Dan Klein, 3-2.

A “final four” golfer from last year, Jeremy Decko of Carlos, also kept his hopes alive with a 4-3 win.

The tension ratchets up a notch for today’s second-round matches. A few highlights: Casey Vangsness will take on Decko, whom he defeated in the semis last year, 3-2. In a battle of Alexandrians, Derek Swedberg will duel Rose.

And two competitors who won grueling matches yesterday – Shay Conder (a 1-up winner) and Austin McCulloch (19 holes) – will hope to make shorter work of it today.

The action will start from No. 1 at 1:48 p.m. In the meantime, here’s a look back at Wednesday’s matches: C. VANGSNESS DEF. G. KLEIN, 7-6 The defending champ showed no signs of rust against Geoff Klein of St. Peter. He was 7-under par for the day.

Vangsness jumped out to an early lead with a par on No. 1, matched Klein’s pars on the next two holes and went to 2up with a bogey on No. 4.

Vangsness closed out the front nine with a flurry, winning 7, 8 and 9 with birdie, birdie, par to take a commanding 5-up lead at the turn.

He didn’t cool down after crossing the road.

Vangsness won Nos. 10 and 11 with birdies and closed out the match, 7-6, by matching Klein’s birdie on No. 12.

DECKO DEF. B. HAFDAL, 4-3 Decko took an early lead, faltered a bit but then came back strong to post a 4-3 win over Brady Hafdal.

Decko won Nos. 1 and 2 with pars but Hafdal quickly erased the lead with a par win on No. 3 and a bogey win on No. 4.

Undaunted, Decko calmly won the next three holes, all birdies, to build a 3-up lead, which he held at the turn.

He matched Hafdal’s pars on the next three holes and then sealed a 4-3 victory with back-toback birdies on Nos. 14 and 15.

BAHE DEF. PETERSON, 3-2 Kyle Bahe of Mankato took advantage of his opponent’s bogey troubles to earn a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Resorters’ veteran Eric Peterson of Benson.

Bahe won three holes on the front nine, Nos. 3, 5 and 9 with pars while Peterson won just one, a par on No. 1.

With a 2-up lead going into No. 11, Bahe padded his edge with a big birdie win. Peterson fought back with a birdie on the next hole but Bahe went back to 3-up with a birdie on No. 14.

MEYER DEF. JARRETT, 4-2 Grady Meyer of West Fargo won just five holes against Nicholas Jarrett of Coraville, IA, but it was good enough for a nifty 42 win.

On the front nine, Meyer prevailed on Nos. 2, 3 and 8 with two pars and a birdie. Jarrett notched just one win, a birdie on No. 6.

With Meyer 2-up at the turn, the match settled into a who-will-blink-first scenario. Both golfers matched strokes on the next four holes. Meyer finally broke the stalemate with a birdie on No. 14.

Meyer then matched Jarrett’s par on the next hole and took No. 16 with a birdie to close out the contest.

BENNETT DEF. GERGEN, 2-1 It was a wild ride but Matt Bennett of Marshall hung on to defeat Dylan Gergen of Mendota Heights, 2-1.

Gergen won No. 1 with birdie but Bennett bounced back with wins on the next two holes to steal the lead. Gergen drew even with a birdie on No. 4 and both golfers halved the next three holes.

Bennett broke the ice with a birdie on No. 8 to regain the lead but Gergen tied it again with a birdie on No. 10.

After swapping pars and birdies on the next two holes, Bennett made his move, winning Nos. 13, 14 and 15 with a birdie and two pars to go 3-up.

Gergen mounted one more comeback, winning No. 16 with par, but pars on the next hole closed out the match in Bennett’s favor.

A. HEINEN DEF. FARLEY, 6-5 Alex Heinen of Edmond, OK and Mack Farley of Lakeville were having a close match through the first four holes. Heinen was just 1up.

But the wheels fell off

for Farley shortly after that. Heinen won Nos. 5, 7, 8 and 9 to go 5-up at the turn.

Farley stopped the bleeding with a win on No. 10 but Heinen poured it on, winning Nos. 11 and 12 and halving No. 13 to ice a 6-5 victory.

WILSON DEF. LEHMAN, 4-3 The shootout between Thomas Lehman of Scottsdale, AZ and Jaques Wilson of Victoria was a study in momentum.

Wilson won the first two holes with birdies to go 2-up.

Then, after swapping pars on No. 3, the momentum shifted to Lehman as he put together a string of five wins with three straight birdies followed by two pars to go 3-up.

But after that, it was all Wilson. He won the next seven holes, mixing in three birdies on Nos. 11, 12 and 14, to nail down a sudden 4-3 turn-around.

LERVICK DEF. BE. BLACK, 3-2 While Wilson and Lehman were putting together long victory streaks, the other two in the foursome, Collin Lervick and Bennett Black, were locked in a dog fight, with neither golfer giving up much of anything.

They halved every hole but five: Lervick won Nos. 1 and 3 with pars; Black won No. 11 with birdie; and then Lervick won Nos. 13 and 15 with par, birdie.

Pars on No. 16 ended the match. Lervick of Chanhassen prevailed over Alexandria’s Black, 3-2.

ROSE DEF. KLEIN, 3-2 You’ve got to feel sorry for Dan Klein of Phoenix, AZ. The guy wins the division’s medalist honor with a scorching round of 67 and he is “rewarded” by being paired against the 32nd seed, who happens to be three-time Resorters champion (2000,

1983 and 1979) Jerry Rose of Alexandria.

Granted, Rose wasn’t at the top of his game yesterday, he ran into trouble on a few holes, but he was still 2-under par for the day, which carried him to a 3-2 victory.

Rose won three holes on the front nine – Nos. 1, 4 and 9 with birdie, par, birdie. Klein won just one hole, a par on No. 3, and was one down at the turn.

Both golfers faltered on No. 10 with triple-bogeys but quickly settled down on the next four holes by shooting par, birdie, par, birdie.

Rose won No. 15 with a birdie to go 3-up and matched Klein’s par on No. 16 to advance to the second round.

SWEDBERG DEF. WINGE IN 19 HOLES It took one extra hole, but Derek Swedberg of Alexandria outlasted Christopher Winge of Eden Prairie.

Match details were not available.

MONTPLAISIR DEF. HERDINE, 4-3 Jacob Montplaisur, a 20-year-old student from Gilbert, AZ, was a 4-3 winner over Jake Herdine of Maple Grove.

Match details were not available.

HAFDAL DEF. GREENBERG, 1-UP Michael Greenberg tied John Hafdal of Prior Lake four times but wasn’t able to surge into the lead.

The match had this kind of rhythm to it: Hafdal won No. 2 but Greenberg won No. 4. Hafdal won No. 5 but Greendal won No. 6. Hafdal won No. 7 but Greenberg won No. 9 to draw even.

Hafdal regained the lead for the fourth time with a win on No. 11 and kept it for the next two holes but Greenberg answered again by winning No. 14.

CONDER DEF. OBERG, 1-UP Shay Conder of Lehi, UT had to scrap and scramble but a late surge gave him a 1-up victory over Michael Oberg of Lakeville.

Oberg held a 1-up lead at the turn by winning four holes on the front, Nos. 2 (par), 6 (birdie), 7 (par) and 9 (par). Conder, meanwhile, won three holes, Nos. 3, 5 and 8, with pars.

Conder deadlocked the match with a birdie win on No. 10 only to drop the next hole to Oberg’s birdie.

After halving the next two holes, Oberg went 2up with a birdie on No. 15.

Conder, faced with a now-or-never moment, came through in the clutch, winning Nos. 16, 17 and 18 with two birdies and a par to deliver a stunning 1-up comeback.

MCCULLOCH DEF. LINDBERG IN 19 HOLES Alexandria’s Austin McCulloch never held a lead against Andrew Lindberg of Coppell, TX until it mattered – in an extra hole.

It was a closely fought match the whole way with Lindberg never out front by more than two holes.

McCulloch won just

two holes on the front, Nos. 6 and 7 with pars, while Lindberg won three holes to go 1-up at the turn.

McCulloch’s birdie won No. 10 to tie the match but Lindberg regained the lead with a birdie win on No. 12.

After halving the next three holes, McCulloch drew even again with a birdie on No. 16.

Pars on the next two holes sent the match into overtime and McCulloch prevailed on the first extra hole.

B. VANGSNESS DEF. BR. BLACK, 3-2 In his match against fellow Alexandrian Bryant Black, Ben Vangsness showed why he was the division’s champion in 2011 and 2012. He took an early lead, let it slip it little, but then came back strong and refused to cave under pressure.

Vansgness won the first two holes with birdie, par. Black won the next two with birdie, par to draw even.

Vangsness won No. 5 but Black took hole 6 to draw even and surged into the lead with a par win on No. 8. Vangsness squared the match on the next hole and went back into the lead with a par win on No. 10.

It was all Vangsness after that. He won No. 11 with par to go 2-up and

matched Black on the next four holes. The twotime champ sealed a 3-2 victory with a birdie on No. 16.

N. HEINEN DEF. ANDERSON, 3-1 Nick Heinen of Edmond, OK took the lead on the fifth hole in his match against Casey Anderson of Warroad and never relinquished it.

He went 2-up with a birdie on No. 8. Anderson tried to rally with a par win on No. 9 but Heinen won the 10th hole with a par to go 2-up.

Anderson tried chipping away at the lead with a par win on No. 11 but Heinen again stood his ground, winning No. 12 with birdie.

Anderson’s par on the next hole brought him to within one, but it proved to be his last win of the day. Heinen won No. 14 with birdie, halved the next two holes, and nailed down a 3-1 win with a par win on No. 17.

through the Senior Division bracket again as he punched his ticket to the quarterfinals with a 4-3 win over Alexandria’s Dave Kjos.

Kjos had an early lead in this one after a par win on 4 and a birdie win on 5 moved him to 1-up. Empanger got one back on the 8th with a par win as the two went onto the back all square.

That’s where Empanger began to make his move. He used a birdie on No. 12 to get started. It was the first of four straight wins for him as he used pars on the next three holes to secure the win.

GERGEN DEF. SEASHORE, 4-3 Steve Gergen of West St. Paul will live to see another day as he upended Gene Seashore of Lakewood Ranch, Florida in a 4-3 match Gergen jumped out early and never trailed in this one. He used a birdie win

on 2 and another on 5 to take a 3-up lead. Seashore had just two wins on the day. Those came with a birdie on 6 and a par on 14.

It wasn’t enough as Gergen played steady throughout much of his round.

He birdied Nos. 7, 11 and 12 to earn wins on all three of those holes and put the match away with three holes to spare.

Top seeds advance in Masters’ Division

The top four seeds survived their first test in the opening round of Resorters Masters’ Division championship flight play on Wednesday afternoon.

Top-seeded Tom Eidsvold and secondseeded Larry Peterson needed to hang on in close matches to keep their championship hopes alive. Eidsvold defeated fellow Alexandria native Mike Golden 2-up and Peterson needed 18 holes to wrap up a 1-up victory over Bob Brabant.

Third seeded Dave Harris defeated Gary Obele 5-4, and the fourth seed Dick Lasch also won 5-4 over Jim Howe.

The Masters’ Division championship flight quarterfinals will battle once again on Thursday afternoon. The first group will tee off of No. 1 at noon with the second group following shortly after at 12:09 p.m.

EIDSVOLD DEF. GOLDEN, 2-UP In a battle of Alexandria natives, Eidsvold defeated Golden 2-up in a

match that needed 18 holes to reach its conclusion.

Eidsvold charged out of the gates as he gained a 3-up lead with a bogey on No. 10, a par on No. 11 and a birdie on No. 12. Golden rebounded to par the 15th hole, but Eidsvold returned the favor with a par victory on No. 17.

Golden cut Eidsvold’s lead down to one with a birdie on No. 1 and a par on No. 2, but that is as close as he would get. The two golfers traded holes on Nos. 6 and 7 before Eidsvold put the finishing touches on the match with a par on No. 9.

CLIFF DEF. RIESBERG, 1-UP Ken Riesberg squandered a two-hole lead with only four left to play as his opponent George Cliff rallied to a 1-up victory.

Cliff and Riesberg battled through the back nine as neither could gain an advantage after half of the match was completed. Riesberg parred No. 1 and birdied No. 5 to gain a 2-up lead.

But that’s when Cliff rallied to victory. He

Lasch used pars on Nos. 10, 13, 15, 16 and 18 to grab a five-up lead after the back-nine. Howe was able to par No. 4 to bring the lead back to 4-up, but Lasch birdied the final hole to wrap up a 5-4 victory.

Peterson held multiple leads over the first nine before Brabant battled back nearly every time to square the match.

Peterson finally carded a par on No. 9 to give him a 1-up lead that he would keep heading into the front nine. Pars on Nos. 1 and 3 gave Peterson a 3up lead with only six to play. Brabant cut into the advantage with pars on Nos. 4 and 8, but that was

Locals pack the quarterfinals in Women’s Division

The Women’s Division featured a little bit of everything on Wednesday, from late comebacks, to blowouts and playoffs.

In the end, former champions Betsy Aldrich and Sam Falk are still standing. Joining them is the youngest player in the field in Alayna Eldred, who used a big rally on the back to secure her win. Andrea Dwyer, will also join Alexandria natives Natalie Amundson and Amanda Bigger, along with sisters from

Glenwood in Brianna and Jenna Janu when the women take to the first tee box at 12:54 p.m. today.

Here’s how all of them got there by winning yesterday.

FALK. DEF. KINGSTON, 7-6 The defending champion made quick work of Alexandria’s Veronica Kingston on Wednesday.

Falk got wins on the first three holes and never looked back from there. The Gustavus Adolphus golfer took a little while to start shooting at her normal level.

She won two of those first three holes with a couple bogeys but found a rhythm with a birdie win on 5. That was the first of four straight wins for her as she added another birdie win on 8 to help take a 6-hole lead into the turn.

Falk ended things quickly when they got there. She parred both 10 and 11 before she and Kingston both parred 12 to end the match.

take her biggest lead of the day.

Eldred chipped away from there. She used a birdie on 12 to get going before par wins on 14 and 15 evened things up. The youngest player in the field showed some poise as the two went to 18, where she used a par win to came all the way back and win the match.

DWYER DEF. WOODHULL, 6-4 Andrew Dwyer used a flurry on the back nine to end things early in her 64 win over Amanda Woodhull on Wednesday.

Dwyer led by as many as three on the front after back-to-back birdie wins on 6 and 7. Woodhull tried to make a run from there. She used a birdie win of her own on 9 to earn her second straight victory and cut her deficit to one at the turn.

That’s where Dwyer made her move. She birdied the first two holes on the back and used par wins on 12 and 13 to help put things away early.

BIGGER DEF. WESTERHAM, 9-7 Amanda Bigger put things on cruise control against Kelly Westerham of St. Louis Park and never had to worry in a 97 win.

Bigger led from the get-go as she won the first three holes to take command. The former Cardinals standout added to that with par wins on 5, 7, 8 and 9 before making the turn. She ran that streak to five straight holes won as she put things away with a par win on 11 that sets up a matchup with Dwyer in the quarterfinals.

B. JANU DEF. CAVERS, 10-8 Glenwood’s Brianna Janu couldn’t have fared any better in a match play round on Wednesday afternoon.

The South Dakota State University golfer and former Minnewaska standout took every hole on her way to beating Jen Cavers of Alexandria, 10-8. Janu was steady throughout her whole round and used pars on the first four holes and a birdie on the fifth to take a commanding lead.

Cavers just didn’t have her game working on Wednesday. She fell behind early and Janu wasn’t going to let her back in it with a solid performance that cemented her spot into the quarterfinals.

ALDRICH DEF. GUGGISBERG, 19-HOLES One of the closest matches of the day in the Women’s Division came in a battle between former champion Betsy Aldrich and former Minnewaska standout Guggisberg.

It took an extra hole, but it was Aldrich who got the job done. She led by two after par wins on 10, 11 and 12. Guggisberg wouldn’t go away as she used a birdie win on 15 and a par win on 16 to pull even.

That’s how they went through 18 after a couple of pars on the next two holes. Aldrich didn’t waste time in extras. She took care of business on the first hole to end the playoff and secure her spot in the quarterfinals.

Janu led by two after a par win on 5, but Marlow pulled even heading to the back with wins on 8 and 9. She grabbed her first lead of the day on No. 10 with a birdie win.

Janu had another answer. She won 11 to even things up and took a onehole lead with a par win on 16. It didn’t last long as Marlow had an answer with a par win of her own on 17. That’s how they went to an extra hole before Janu persevered for the win.

Amundson, a soon-tobe-senior, battled her teammate Emily Thul and had a little more on the back nine to secure the win. Thul jumped out early in this one with wins on 1 and 3 before Amundson answered with wins on 4 and 6.

Thul took a one-hole lead to the back, where Amundson eventually pulled away. She used a birdie win on 11 sandwiched around par wins on 10, 12 and 14 to move to 3-up. Thul got one back on 16, but Amundson put the match away on 17 with a par win.

Close matches highlight day one of Men’s Execs

The first round of the Executive Division match play was exactly what one would expect from the top 32 players in a talented field.

Matches were close all afternoon with two of those needing playoffs and six more being decided by three holes or less. In the end, top seeds Andy Peterson and Nick Paulsen moved on, while former champion Tim Peterson secured a 6-5 win as well as the field was dwindled to the final 16.

The Men’s Execs will tee off from the first tee starting at 1:12 p.m. today. First, here’s a look at how all of them got here.

A. PETERSON DEF. DOLAN, 5-4 Andy Peterson of Albert Lea finished as the Men’s Executive medalist during qualifying and he picked up right where he left off on the opening day of match play.

Peterson took down John Dolan of Shorewood in a 5-4 match that saw Peterson jump out to a nice lead after the back nine and put things away on the front. His birdie wins on his first two holes gave him a nice early cushion before taking a 3-up advantage onto the front.

He didn’t let up from there. Peterson used par wins on Nos. 2 and 3 to increase his lead before a birdie win on No. 5 put things away.

GROSSMAN DEF. GARDINER, 3-2 Brent Grossman of Carver took a 3-up lead through nine holes on Wednesday, and that lasted for him as he beat Deephaven’s John Gardiner 3-2.

The two were even through four before Grossman won three of the next five holes to take a lead. Gardiner got it back to within two after a win on their 12th hole, but Grossman answered two holes later to move back to 3-up. That’s exactly where they stood at the end of the match as Grossman won with two to spare.

HAGEN DEF. BENNETT, 3-2 Al Hagen held off Steve Bennett of Marshall after taking an early lead and never trailing after five holes.

Hagen, of Harrisburg, South Dakota, couldn’t pull away very far, but he always kept Bennett at an arm’s length. He used

par wins on 12, 14 and 17 to make the turn at 2-up before Bennett cut it to one with a par win on the first hole.

Hagen immediately had an answer. He took No. 2 with a par before a bogey win on 4 for Bennett got him back to within one. That’s where Hagen created a little distance as he won 5 with a par and 6 with a birdie for a 3-up lead that proved insurmountable.

T. PETERSON DEF. DURKIN, 6-5 Tim Peterson of Circle Pines was his usual self on Wednesday as the 2011 champ made quick work of his opponent in a 6-5 win over Andy Durkin of Minneapolis.

Peterson seldom gives away matches, and he was going to make Durkin have to beat him on Wednesday. Three birdie wins on the back and two more on the front gave him a nice cushion before he put things away with a par win on No. 4.

Durkin fell behind by two after the first two holes, but Durkin made a temporary comeback with a birdie win on 12 and a par win on 13 to even things up. The next three holes were all Peterson as he took a lead that he wouldn’t relinquish this time.

HEIMSNESS DEF. FINGALSEN, 6-4 Eric Heimsness of Woodbury needed about four holes before he put the pedal to the metal in pulling away from Dave Fingalsen of Rogers.

The two were all square after four when Heimsness used a birdie win on 14 as the first of five straight wins on Nos. 14-18. The final four came on pars before a birdie win on 1 gave him his biggest lead at 6-up.

Fingalsen got one back with wins on 2 and 3, but it was too little, too late as Heimsness finished things off with a birdie win on 5.

HANSON DEF. HARRIS, 2-1 Michael Hanson of Glenwood had to hold on a little bit after building an early cushion, but he outlasted Blaine’s Joel Harris for a 2-1 win.

Hanson won the first three holes on the back to jump out to a 3-up lead.

Harris responded from there, winning 13, 16 and 18 to cut his deficit to just one at the turn.

Hanson got a muchneeded par win on 1 and added another win on 4 to push his lead to three holes again. Harris cut it

LEWIS DEF. JOHNSON, 20-HOLES Darin Johnson of Glenwood stormed back from a big deficit on the front to force extra holes, but couldn’t put away Nick Lewis of Owatonna.

Lewis led by five at the turn after wins on 11, 12 (birdie), 16, 17 and 18 (birdie) left him with what looked like a comfortable lead. Johnson had other plans as he methodically made his move with wins on 1, 4, 6, 8 and 9 to force a playoff.

Lewis found a way to regroup after that. Both players halved the first playoff hole, but Lewis finally grasped the win on the 20th hole to secure his spot in the final 16.

M. WILLIAMS DEF. ADAMS, 19-HOLES In a field that was filled with close matches, the battle between Michael Williams of Minneapolis and David Adams of Maple Grove was no exception on Wednesday.

In the end, Williams had just enough to outlast Adams in a 1-up victory that took an extra hole before he cemented his spot in the final 16.

The biggest lead in this one was two holes as both players went toe-totoe throughout the after-

noon. Adams was trailing by one after a par win for Williams on No. 7 before he answered right back with a par win of his own on 8.

That evened things up going to No. 9. Both players halved that one to set up a playoff, where Williams took care of business on the first hole.

Williams’ win will match him up against Paulsen on Thursday as they tee off around 1:30 p.m. from the first tee.

C. JOHNSON DEF. ROCKERS, 5-3 Chad Johnson trailed by two after two holes but didn’t drop another one

on his way to a 5-3 win over Pete Rockers of Minneapolis.

Rockers used par wins on 10 and 11 to grab that early lead. It took a couple holes, but Johnson responded with a flurry.

The Burnsville resident won 14 and 16 with a par before a birdie on 17 gave him his first lead. He added to that with his third straight winning hole on 18 to make the turn at 2-up.

Johnson continued to roll from there. He won holes 3 and 4 before putting it away with a par win on 6.

J. JOHNSON DEF. MARLOW, 1-UP Jeff Johnson of Chaska was trailing by two holes after 12 on Wednesday before he made his move to upend Chad Marlow of Wichita, Kansas in a 1-up match.

Marlow led by one at the turn and added to that with a par win at 3.

That’s when Johnson came to life with four straight wins, including a birdie win at 7. That proved to be the difference in the match as Marlow got one back on No. 8 but couldn’t get any closer.

PAULSEN DEF. WATSON, 5-4 The division’s second seed in the tournament wasn’t going to let there be an upset on Wednesday as Nick Paulsen of Alexandria beat Chris Watson of Omaha, Nebraska, 5-4.

Paulsen led almost the entire way in this one after grabbing a lead with a win on his first hole. Watson got that back on the very next hole, but Paulsen strung together a stretch of six straight wins to take complete control of the match.

That was the difference in the end as Paulsen never came

Lueck led by just one at the turn but scored a birdie win on No. 1. That gave him a little momentum as he used it to secure wins on 3 and 5 to move to 4-up. That proved to be plenty as Lueck secured the win two holes later.

CAROTHERS DEF. DONLEY, 4-3 Dave Carothers got off to a great start with a couple birdie wins on the first two holes and never looked back in a 4-3 win over Scott Donley of Minneapolis.

Carothers led by three after four holes before Donley got his first win with a birdie on 14.

Carothers had an answer on 15 and 16 with a couple par wins, but Donley made his run with wins on the next three holes, including a birdie win on 1.

That made things a one-hole match before Carothers started to put it away. T. JOHNSON DEF. TYLER WIRTH, 2›1 A tight match went to Tom Johnson of Maple Grove on Wednesday as he edged Tyler Wirth 2-1 with a late surge.

Wirth opened the door a little bit on holes 7 and 8 with bogeys after the two went into their final three holes all square. Johnson took advantage of the opportunity and grabbed par wins on both those holes to end things in 17.

That cemented a comeback that saw him trail by two in a back-andforth back nine. They started on the 10th and Wirth used three straight wins on 14, 15 and 16 to move to 2-up. Johnson answered right back with a birdie win on 17 and a par win on 18. He added another birdie win on No. 1 after they made the turn, but Wirth used a win on four to even things back up.

That’s where things stood going into holes 7 and 8 before Johnson put things away.

BIGGER DEF. BRADFORD, 1-UP It took 19 holes, but Alexandria’s Jeff Bigger lived to see another day with a win over Bart Bradford.

Both players were all square after 18 before Bigger made good on a playoff opportunity to secure the win. He’ll take on fellow Alexandrian Dave Dilley today for a

spot in the quarterfinals.

DILLEY DEF. WESSEL, 2-1 Dilley needed 17 holes to put away Chris Wessel, but he got the job done with a par win on No. 7 on Wednesday.

Dilley and Wessel went back and forth all afternoon with neither player separating themselves by more than one hole until Dilley cemented the win. Wessel had a birdie win on No. 15 and Dilley used a birdie win on 1.

Dilley took his first lead on No. 3, but Wessel answered right back with a par win on 4. It was Dilley’s turn to capture a par win on 5. The two players halved No. 6 before Dilley secured things on 7.
