New champ will be Execs Page 4 crowned in

Five champs return amidst talented fields By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com

The Resorters Golf Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club is a bit of a reunion for so many of the golfers and their families who make this tournament a priority to attend every year. It’s no different this year in the 93rd playing of the Resorters. A lot of former champions are back trying to pad their resume, while those who are still searching for that elusive title strive to get over that hurdle this week. “The strength of the field is good,” AGC head pro Ron Rebrovich said of this year’s Resorters. “Every year the tournament comes together. It’s a testament to the tournament’s longevity and our forefathers that put it together.” A total of five defending champions are back from the seven divisions. For the third straight year, a Vangsness stood at the top of the men’s championship last year. This time it was Casey Vangsness, the younger brother of 2011 and 2012 champion, Ben Vangsness. Both of the Alexandria natives return this week in hopes of making it four straight titles for the family. Joining them as defending champions this summer are Steve Herzog in the Senior Men’sDivision, Tom Eidsvold in the Masters’ Division, Samantha Falk of Glenwood in the Women’s Division and Nathaniel Adams, who won the Junior 10-12 Division the last two years and is now moving up to the Junior 13-15 Division. “I think it says a lot

The winners of the championship flights in the 2013 Resorters Golf Tournament were (left to right) Alexandria’s Steve Herzog, Senior Men’s Division; Alexandria’s Tom Eidsvold, Masters’ Division; St. Cloud’s Daryl Schomer, Executive Men’s Division; Alexandria’s Casey Vangsness, Men’s Division; Monterey, California’s Ryan Swedberg, Junior 13-15 Division; Maple Grove’s Nathaniel Adams, Junior 10-12 Division; and Glenwood’s Samantha Falk, Women’s Division. about the tournament that people want to come back and defend their crown,” Rebrovich said. “They take a lot of pride in being a champion of the Resorters.” Two of those returning champs are Alexandrians as Herzog and Eidsvold are both shooting for their third straight titles this week. The two divisions that will have a new champion crowned from last year are the Executive Men’s and Junior 10-12’s. Twotime defending Executive Men’s champion Daryl Schomer couldn’t make it this summer, while Adams aged out of the 10-12 division, leaving

the field open for a firsttime champion. The men’s and women’s field are loaded with young golfers, many of which are either upand-comers at the high school level or players who have been successful at the college level. Of the 112 entries in the Men’s Division, more than 85 are age 25 and younger. The Women’s Division featured 16 entries of the 22 who were signed up on July 24 who are age 24 or younger. Included in that is 14-year-old Alayna Eldred of Osakis, who tied for 12th at the Class AA

There will be a new champion in the Executive Men’s Division this year. That’s guaranteed with twotime defending champion Daryl Schomer of St. Cloud not in the field this year. That opens things up for the expected 48 entries. One of those who is back is last year’s second-place finisher, Tim Peterson, as the 50year-old from Circle Pines tries to capture his second Resorters title this year after winning the 2011 Executive Division. Peterson locked up in a match-up with Schomer in the championship round last year, and Schomer needed to make a couple pressure putts to hold off Peterson. Neither player led by more than two holes at any point that day. In the end, Schomer knocked in birdies on Nos. 14 and 16 for what proved to be the difference in a 1-up match. “Congrats to Tim Peterson,” Schomer said last year as he accepted his trophy in the awards ceremony after the win. “He’s a great player. He’s always such a competitor out there, and he’s just as gracious when he’s a winner as he is in defeat.” Both players were on their game from the get-go entering the semifinals. Schomer beat Chaska’s Jeff Johnson 5-3 after shooting even-par through 15 holes in the morning. Johnson is also back in the field this year

hoping to make a run at a title. Peterson needed a little extra time in his semifinals match last year, but built a nice lead on the front and took down 2009 champion, Stefan Freeman of St. Cloud. That set the stage for what turned out to be a great championship match. Peterson struck first with a birdie win on the first hole before Schomer answered back with a par win on No. 2. It took birdies to gain any advantage through the rest of the front. Schomer knocked in his first of four birdies of the round on No. 4 to take his first lead. He added to it three holes later with a birdie on seven that was immediately answered with a birdie by Peterson on eight. Schomer took a 1-up lead to the back, where Peterson answered with back-to-back par wins in their first two holes. He held that lead until the 14th, when Schomer’s birdie evened things up. Two holes later, it was another birdie that proved to be the match winner after both players parred Nos. 17 and 18. In addition to Peterson, many other Men’s Executive regulars are back in this year’s field. That should make it another competitive tournament this week.

Alexandria’s Casey Vangsness finished tied for 32nd at the Minnesota Golf Association’s Amateur Championship from July 21-23. The returning Resorters Men’s Division champion shot a 13-over 229 through the three rounds at the Golden Valley Golf and Country Club. Vangsness eagled the par-five 18th to finish off his tournament in the final round. He ran into a stretch on the back on the final day where he bogeyed four of six holes. He added a couple birdies and seven pars to his card in the final round. Vangsness qualified for the 111th Amateur Championship by winning a qualifier at the Wapicada golf Club on June 25. He shot a 2-under 70 by firing backto-back 35s that day. That helped him secure the win by two strokes over three others who finished at 72. Alexandria’s Austin McCulloch and Jerry Rose also qualified for the championship after each shot 74 at the qualifying event at the Minnewaska Golf Club on June 25. Rose finished tied for 28th at the championship in a group that included two-time Executive Division champion Daryl Schomer of St. Cloud. Rose and Schomer both shot three-day scores of 12-over, 228. Jesse Bull won the championship with a 212 after shooting two-under on the final day. He edged Erik Christopherson by one stroke to win the title.

Alexandria’s Leland takes job with the MGA By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com

File photo | Echo Press

Alexandria’s Maggie Leland is a three-time Resorters champion in the Women’s Division.

Alexandria native Maggie Leland is moving on from playing in golf tournaments around the region to managing them after her career at Augustana College came to an end this past spring. Leland graduated from Augustana in Sioux Falls with degrees in business administration and sports management after starting her college career as a nursing major. She switched her focus for her sophomore year and has spent her summers working in golf administration, including the last two as the United States Golf Association’s P.J. Boatwright intern with the South Dakota Golf Association. That experience made her a perfect fit for her new role as the Women’s Golf Manager as she accepted the position with the Minnesota Golf Association (MGA) as of June 11. “I was very excited,” Leland said. “It means a lot to me to be working in the golf association that I grew up in and to have familiar faces around. I haven’t been working very long, but it’s been everything that I could have hoped for.” Leland’s job is based

out of Edina. Her primary responsibilities will be organizing and running tournaments for the Minnesota Women’s Golf Association and the Minnesota Women’s Public Golf Association. Leland is plenty familiar with the MGA after growing up playing in events and even earning the MGA’s Junior Girls’ Player of the Year honor. Leland is a former Class AAA individual state champion during her senior year in Alexandria in 2010. She went on to captain the women’s golf team at Augustana College and become a two-time Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) individual champion. Leland played in the NCAA Division II National Championships during her first three seasons as a Viking. She finished as high as 13th place individually during her sophomore season. Leland and the Vikings failed to qualify as a team for the NCAA Championships this spring for the first time since 2007 after Augustana finished fifth in the Central Region Championships in early May. Leland went into college with a goal of winning an individual national championship but couldn’t be disappointed

with how things ultimately played out over her four years as a Viking. “I think it was very successful,” she said. “It was obviously disappointing to not make it to nationals for the fourth year. I guess post-college, when you look back it’s about the experience and not about the accomplishments. I couldn’t have asked for better coaches and teammates to work with throughout my four years.” After playing in competitive tournaments almost her whole life, Leland will now shift her focus to managing them. Her role with the MGA will keep her busy all golf season, but she’s excited to still be in the game of golf with a chance to make a living through the sport she loves. “It’s kind of just been my dream to work in it now,” Leland said. “I’ll be still playing but just not playing competitively nearly as much. I’ll be working all the championships now. Down the road I’ll get involved in like club tournaments or leagues, but at least in the immediate future I won’t be playing in any championships.”

Herzog shoots for third straight

Jon Empanger is back and looking for his ninth Resorters title By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com

The Senior Men’s Division field will go through perennial power Steve Herzog again this year as the Alexandria golfer returns looking for his third straight division title and sixth championship overall. If he’s going to win another one, it will have to come against a talented field that includes eighttime Resorters champion Jon Empanger of Chaska. Empanger wasn’t in the field last year, but is back looking to win his first title since 2011. It took just 14 holes for Herzog to complete his defense of the Senior Men’s Division championship in 2013 against Greg Mattson of Becker. Mattson is also a Resorters regular who will try to get back there and finish off his first title this week. Herzog never trailed in the match between those

two last year and rolled to a three-up lead after shooting pars on the first three holes. Mattson won his first hole with a par on No. 4, but Herzog regained his three-up lead with a par on No. 5. Herzog’s lead grew to five-up after nine holes were complete, thanks to pars on Nos. 7 and 9. He took a commanding six-up advantage with a par on No. 11. Mattson bounced back with his second win of the day on No. 13, but Herzog wrapped up the match with a par on No. 14. Herzog also won the Men’s Regular Division twice in 1984 and 1993, and the Executive Men’s Division in 1992. Herzog made it look easy all week last summer. He cruised to a 4-3 victory against Bob Falls in the semifinals, and had an even easier 6-5 win in the quarterfinals against Gary Rolfzen. Falls and Rolfzen are also both back in an expected field of 48 entries that should feature competitive matches throughout the week. SENIOR DIVISION RESULTS Steve Herzog def. Greg Mattson, 6-4

Vangsness brothers back in talented Men’s Divison Four previous champions back for 2014 Resorters The Resorters Golf Tournament Men’s Division returns a loaded field this season including Alexandria’s Vangsness brothers who have won the tournament the past three years. Casey Vangsness bolted out to a big early lead last year and played near flawless golf to win his first-ever Resorters Golf Tournament. His brother, Ben, had won the title the past two years. Casey, a big-hitting lefty, defeated 17-year-old Nick Heinen of Edmond, Oklahoma, 5-4, in the final round of the Men’s Division Championship in 2013. Heinen is also back this year as he tries to take the next step in winning a Men’s Division title after ending as the runner-up last year. The 18-year-old Heinen is a two-time Junior 13-15 Division champion after

winning in 2009 and 2011. The Vangsness brothers met up in the quarterfinals last year where Casey won a down-tothe-wire shootout, 2-1. “I stayed relaxed,” Casey said last year about his title-winning performance. “I wasn’t nervous at all…It’s been fun all week. A lot of family and friends.” Casey advanced to the finals after knocking off former Alexandrian Jeremy Decko of Scottsdale, Arizona 3-2 a few hours before the title match. He calmly began the finals with a trio of birdies before Heinen stopped the damage by tying him on the next four holes. Casey went to four-up on No. 8 when he just missed a birdie putt, and settled for par as Heinen’s par putt went awry. Heinen, who advanced to the finals with a hardfought one-up win over Justin Doeden of Prior Lake in the semifinals, showed flashes of his medalist form by sinking a long birdie putt on No. 9 that sliced the lead to three.

Casey quickly dampened Heinen’s hope for a comeback by winning Nos. 10 and 11 with birdies to go five-up. On the par-5 No. 12, Casey once again hit a dead-on drive right in the middle of the fairway. He then knocked his second shot on the green and drained the eagle putt to go six-up. Casey’s only miscues happened on No. 13 when he hit trees on his first two shots. He conceded the hole, stopping his second shot with his hand when it bounced back at him, but was still comfortably out front by five. He quickly rebounded with a solid drive on the par-5 No. 14, followed by a nice approach that left him about 20 yards from the green. His chip for eagle stopped an inch from the cup, giving him a gimme-birdie. Heinen barely missed his eagle try, which ended the match. While he has earned a lot of distinction on the golf course over his years on the St. John’s UniverMEN Page 21

Two-time champ aims for three straight Alexandria’s Tom Eidsvold goes for his third straight Masters title By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com

Alexandria’s Tom Eidsvold had to wait 57 years to capture his first-ever Resorters Golf Tournament title two years ago. He didn’t have to wait near as long to earn his second. Now he’s hoping the third time is also the charm as Eidsvold aims to make it three straight Masters’ Division championships against a field loaded with former champs. The Masters’ Division always brings back Resorters regulars who have become synonymous with this event, and this year is no different. Ron Clayton is one of those golfers as the Sarasota, Florida resident is back trying to capture his ninth Resorters title and end a four-year drought. Clayton won six straight Masters’ Division titles from 2004-2009 after winning Senior Men’s titles in 1994 and 2000. He came close to adding another last year. Clayton and Eidsvold locked up in a

back-and-forth battle that finished with Eidsvold winning two-up. It was close until the end, but a 14-foot birdie putt on 18 helped Eidsvold seal the deal. “I putted very well today,” said Eidsvold a year ago. “When you can putt, it makes the game a lot easier.” Eidsvold and Clayton are not only competitors. They’re friends. Clayton stays with the Eidsvold family when he plays in the Resorters. “It’s such a great tournament — a family tournament,” said Eidsvold. “You get a chance to play with old friends every year.” Eidsvold had to dig himself out of an early hole after falling behind by two holes after three in last year’s title match. Clayton used a par win on No. 1 and a bogey win on 3 to grab that early lead before Eidsvold chipped away with a par win on No. 4. Things stood at a one-up lead for Clayton until Eidsvold broke through with a par win on eight to help send things into the turn all square. Both players parred their first two holes on the back, and it was Clayton who struck first with a birdie win on 12 to regain the lead. It didn’t last long.

Eidsvold had an answer every time Clayton tried to grab the momentum. He used a par win at 13 to even things up before a birdie on No. 14 gave him his first lead of the day. Then on 16, he created a little bit of breathing room with a par win that gave him a two-up advantage. Clayton responded with a win of his own on 17, but it wasn’t quite enough to keep Eidsvold from winning his second straight title. Those two are hardly alone as returning champs in this field. George Cliff ’s resume is almost as decorated as anyone in the tournament. The six-time champion (four Senior Men’s titles, two Executive Men’s titles) is back shooting for number seven. Alexandria’s Dave Harris will try to capture his third title this summer after winning the Senior title in 1998 and 2006, while 1991 Men’s Executive champion Dick Lasch of Circle Pines is also in a field of 24 golfers who are trying to play their way to Saturday’s championship. 2013 MASTERS’ DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH August 3, 2013 Eidsvold def. Field is open in the Junior 10-12 Division Last year’s runner-up McKeown is back for shot at title Golfers in the Junior 10-12 Division will see a fairly open field this year with two-time champion Nathaniel Adams moving up to the 13-15 age group. A total of 20 golfers will compete in the Junior Division this year. At least nine of those competitors currently live in the Alexandria area. There are no returning champions in the field, but last year’s runner-up, 12year-old Gabe McKeown of Lenexa, Kansas, is back for another season. Adams defeated McKeown 3-1 in the championship round last year. Adams was not as dominant in the

match as he was the rest of the week in 2013, winning every single hole before facing McKeown. But he never trailed in the eight-hole match for his second consecutive Junior 10-12 title. “It was difficult the last day, I’ll say that,” Adams said during last year’s Resorters award ceremony. Adams led one-up after six holes, taking the lead with a par on No. 11. McKeown held tough against the defending champion, only shooting three bogeys through the first six holes. But Adams made his move through the final two holes of the match. A par on No. 16 gave him a two-up lead, and the match concluded on No. 17 with an Adams par. The title defense looked easy for Adams last year. He won his first two matches 5-4 before his 3-1 victory in the championship.

New champ will emerge in Junior 13-15 Division None of the previous winners are back in the field of 40 A first time champion will emerge in the Junior 13-15 Division this year as none of the 40 participants have previously won the division. However, two of the participants in this year’s field have previously won titles in the Resorters Golf Tournament’s Junior 10-12 Division. Nathaniel Adams, a 13-year-old from Maple Grove, will participate in the 1315 Division after winning the 10-12 championship in both the past two years. Chaska’s Lincoln Johnson, a 14year-old, also won a 10-12 championship in 2010 and is competing in the 13-15 bracket this year. Last year’s champion, Ryan Swedberg of Monterey, California, defeated Andrew Lindberg of Coppell, Texas, in the final hole of the tournament. Neither golfer will be back in the Junior 1315 Division this year. The 16-year-old Lindberg will compete in the Men’s Regular Division.

The battle for the championship last year featured lead changes all afternoon between Swedberg and Lindberg. Neither golfer held more than a onestroke lead in the entire match. “Hats off to Andrew Lindberg,” Swedberg said during the awards ceremony. “He played an excellent match today. It was a lot of fun, and he played really well.” Swedberg started the match one-up thanks to a par on No. 1. He lost the lead when Lindberg shot a par on No. 3, but regained his advantage with a bogey on No. 4. The first lead of the day for Lindberg came after he shot two birdies on Nos. 5 and 6. But Swedberg battled back and tied the match with a bogey on No. 7. The two remained deadlocked for the next seven straight holes. Lindberg finally took the lead on No. 15 with a par, but that ended up being his final win of the day. Swedberg shot a birdie on the next hole to tie the match. With both golfers tied heading into the final hole, Swedberg shot a par to become the division champion.

Resorters newspaper published five times The Resorters paper will be published five times during the Resorters Golf Tournament. The pre-tournament issue is the first containing stories and pictures of the returning players, last year’s results, history of the tournament and other File photo | Echo Press general information. Other issues will be published followNate Adams of Maple Grove watches his tee shot during last year’s competition in the Junior 10-12 Diing qualifying on Wednesday morning vision. Adams has moved up to the Junior 13-15 Division after winning two titles as a 10-12 entry.

Defending champ Falk back for more Two former champions are back in the field of 22 golfers in this year’s Women’s Division of the Resorters Golf Tournament. Among those two former champions is last year’s winner, 21-year-old Samantha Falk of Glenwood, who defeated her former Minnewaska High School teammate Sarah Roering 2-1 in the championship match last year. Roering is not listed among the returning golfers in the Women’s Division. Betsy Aldrich, a 47 year old from St. Louis Park, is the other competitor who has a previous Women’s Division title under her belt. She won the tournament in both 2003 and 2008. In last year’s championship match, Falk led from the start on her way to a Resorters Women’s Division title. After going one-up on No. 1, Falk took a threeup lead with back-to-back wins on Nos. 3 and 4 after Roering shot bogeys on both holes. Roering would get one back with a birdie on No. 7, but she trailed by two holes after play was fin-

ished on the front nine. Twice Falk went to three-up on the back nine after Roering shot a double bogey on No. 11 and a bogey on No. 14. The two traded holes on the back nine, but Falk’s lead would never fall in the 2-1 victory after play concluded on No. 17. The road to the championship match was not easy for Falk. In the semifinals, she had to defeat a Gustavus Adolphus College teammate, Elizabeth Strom. She put up quite a fight, even shooting a hole-inone on No. 7. But Falk was able to win the match 2-1. Falk also had to defeat Alexandria’s Natalie Amundson in the quarterfinals with a 4-3 victory. This year’s women’s field is loaded with young talent. Of the 22 entries as of July 24, 16 of the 22 competitors are age 24 or younger. That includes 14-year-old Alayna Eldred of Osakis who chose to take on a field of older golfers after finishing tied for 12th at the Class AA state meet this past spring as an eighth grader.

sity men’s golf team, the Resorters win is special, Casey said last summer. “It does feel good,” he said. “It’s hard to break through, get the job done and win this tournament.” Two other previous Men’s Division champions will also be back in the tournament this year. back in the field. The 46year-old Coppell, Texas native Mark Lindberg is in the field after winning the Men’s Division title in 2002 and 2003. Last year’s other two semifinalists, Decko and Doeden, are also back this year as the Men’s Division figures to be loaded with talent again in what should be a competitive division.

state tournament this past spring as an eighth grader. “Even someone like me that follows golf pretty closely, I still don’t recognize all the names,” Rebrovich said. “But you do a quick Google search and most are playing in state amateurs and playing on college golf teams or just recently graduated from a college golf team. The Men’s Regular division is strong and all the other ones are too.” With good golfers coming from all over the

state, and even the country for some people, the tournament figures to feature plenty of competitive matches throughout the week before a champion is crowned in seven divisions on Saturday. “Our depth in the field seems to just get better and better, especially in that Regular division,” Rebrovich said. “We’re getting a lot of nice young players who are competing on a statewide level, not just locally. Our fields seem to get stronger each year.”

Roering, Vangsness finish third at MGA Championship By Eric Morken emorken@echopress.com Alexandria’s Casey Vangsness and Glenwood’s Emily Roering were one round away from capturing the Minnesota Golf Association’s Mixed Team Championship at Emerald Greens Golf Course in Hastings earlier this summer. The duo held a one-shot lead after the opening round of the 24th annual tournament as they shot a 9-under 63. In the end, they had to settle for a tie for third as the team of Cassie Deeg of the Somerby Golf Club and Dominic Kieffer of the Golden Eagle Golf Club Emily caught fire on day Roering two by firing a 12under 60 to win the championship by five strokes. “There was never a point when we were struggling today,” Deeg told Nick Hunter of the MGA after the victory. “We both hit shots close and we made putts. We didn’t have any really long putts, but we made a lot of 15-footers.” Vangsness and Roering finished their day two by shooting 4-under. They finished the tournament with a two-day score of 131. Joel Johnson of the Valleywood Golf Course took second with a 129, while Deeg and Kieffer shot 124. Roering and Vangsness were rolling heading into the second round after a torrid back nine on the first day. They made birdies on the first two holes in round one but made just one more through the front. That changed on the back. The duo made three consecutive birdies on 11, 12 and 13 to move to 6-under before stringing together three more consecutive birdies over their final three holes to finish at 9-under. They couldn’t capture that same momentum on day two. They started strong with an eagle on the par-5 second hole but followed that up with a bogey on three. They added two more birdies on the front before birdieing Nos. 10 and 12. Vangsness and Roering shot 1-over through the final six holes with a bogey on 16 to finish their round at 4-under. Vangsness is the 2013 Men’s Division champion of the Resorters Golf Tournament at the Alexandria Golf Club. He just wrapped up a successful career playing Division III golf for the Johnnies at St. John’s University. Roering is the new assistant golf professional at the Geneva Golf Club in Alexandria. She won four state team titles with the Minnewaska girls’ golf team and played collegiately for Division I Colorado State University.
