s n o s a e Six R l a c o L to Shop You boost the local economy - For every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business 63p stayed in the local economy, compared to 40p with a larger business. You increase the value of your home - High streets populated with thriving independent businesses boost the prices of nearby homes. Discount stores and charity shops decrease home values in the area. It is more ethical - When you shop at local butchers, bakers, farm shops and green grocers, it is likely that a decent percentage of the produce has had a short field-to-fork journey. As a bonus it means the food is likely to contain more nutrients and have less packaging 4

You support local entrepreneurs - Head for your local artisan market. These help foster the talents of the next generation of British designers and retailers. There is a constant turnover of new products, and sellers listen to customers’ demands. From food to fledgling clothing designers there will be something for everyone. You help to build your local community - Bookshops, cafes and craft shops often drum up custom by hosting events, from reading groups to knitting clubs and children’s events. If local businesses are not supported, these fun local groups tend to disappear too. You might get a better deal or some good advice - Local independent businesses can use their discretion to reward regular custom. Butchers will give advice on cooking times, and how large a joint you might need to feed a family get-together, with some leftovers. Get to know your local traders.

Let’s face it. There is a universal truth that (in Western cultures at least) very few people want to address: the hidden cost of dying. Unfortunately, though, at some point we all have to, and the sooner we do so, the better for those we’re destined to leave behind.

at things, but during one of the most stressful periods in life, your loved ones will appreciate the fact you thought about their future, not just yours. It’s not just the like-for-like financial benefits that can help reduce expenses, either. A funeral plan will usually allow you to stipulate exactly how you would like your memory to be celebrated, and offers a chance to specify which added extras, if any, you want. Although these are not usually included in the plan itself, it will help others make a decision on what extras to pay for, and potentially stop them from over-compensating and overpaying in the process.

The hidden cost of

With the rising cost of living in Britain in the news of late, it should come as no surprise to learn that funeral expenses have also been on the increase. In fact, what £2,300 would have got you less than a decade ago, will now set you back more than £3,500. And that’s set to go up to £5,400 within the next six years.

DYING

One major outlay is what those in the undertaking business refer to as “added extras”. A limousine, for example, will require some £227 at the current going rate. Flowers average out at £150. A notification in the paper £66, and a wake just shy of £500. Needless to say, it all begins to add up to quite an expense. So, how do you help ease the burden of funeral costs? One simple, affordable and widely available option is to purchase a Pre-Paid Funeral Plan. Companies have been offering these for decades, and the results speak for themselves. By buying into such a package your money is protected in a trust fund, to buy a funeral at the price it would have cost when you paid the balance of the plan in full. The longer you live the greater the saving. This may seem like a callous way to look

Of course a funeral plan of any kind isn’t the only option when it comes to paying for services, cremations, burials and wakes. Property owners, and those leaving behind an estate in a will, may wish to stipulate that some of those funds are used on their own funeral, although this means less is handed over to the heirs. Another option is a Whole of Life Insurance policy (often known as an “over50s plan”, although open to anyone from the age of 16) which will pay a fixed sum after death, allowing some to be used on arrangements such as a funeral. Whatever your choice, it’s wise to consider them all and make a decision now to avoid others being left with the hidden cost of dying.

: s e r fi t n e i c n a e Lighting th n e e w lo l a H f o y r o t s i the h The ancient festival of Halloween is the only night of the year when the boundaries between the dead and the living, and day and night, disappear. Believed to be over 2,000 years old, Halloween - All Hallows’ Evening - dates back to the time of the Celts who celebrated the end of summer and the harvest yield on Samhain, the night of October 31. A hugely important festival, the celebrations were led by Druidic priests who believed it was a time when the souls of the dead could communicate with the living. Huge bonfires were lit up and down the land to welcome the friendly spirits of ancestors and ward off those who wished them harm. People dressed in animal heads and skins and their priests took the sacred embers from house to house, lighting the hearth fires embers to protect their followers during the long winter ahead. Samhain was also a time for divination and the telling of fortunes.

12

As it was harvest, apples featured widely in these rituals - some of which survive today, such as bobbing for apples where the first person to take a bite would be the first to marry that year. Apple peeling was also thought to indicate how long you would live, depending on the unbroken length of peel. Following the invasion of the Romans in 43 AD, these rituals were incorporated into two festivals - Feralia, which commemorated the dead, and a day devoted to Pomona, the goddess of fruit trees. The advent of Christianity saw the church take hold of the Celtic world and convert the pagan festivals into Christian Holy Days. All Hallows’ Day, also known as All Saints Day, was originally celebrated on May 13 but Pope Gregory moved the feast to November 1 in the 8th century in a bid to assimilate Samhain with an approved day of the dead. A mass was held to honour the saints and martyrs who had died for their faith, precededed by an overnight vigil on what

became known as the Eve of All Saints.

Hypno C

The early church also believed all souls were released from purgatory for two days until All Souls Day on November 2. Together, the three festivals - the Eve of All Saints, All Saints Day and All Souls Day became known as Hallowmass. Although the Church succeeded in establishing Hallowmass as a Christian festival, many people continued to practice the ancient pagan customs and traditions. But these became increasingly discouraged with the Reformation in the 16th century and following the Gunpowder Plot in 1605, Halloween was effectively shifted to November 5, now known as Bonfire or Guy Fawkes Night in England, although the Celtic practices continued in Scotland and Ireland. These beliefs and rituals were brought to America by shiploads of Irish immigrants who fled to the USA to escape the Potato Famine of the mid-1800s. One of these traditions was the baking of soul cakes - small round cakes filled with sugar, cinnamon and raisins and topped with the sign of the cross. These were given to “soulers”, mainly children or the poor, who went from door to door singing and saying prayers for the dead. Each cake eaten was believed to represent one soul freed from purgatory. The custom of Trick Or Treating is believed to date back to this ritual, although the trick part appears to have arisen in the USA in the 1930s when Halloween came to be associated with pranks and jokes. The resurgence in the festival’s celebrations over the past 30 years or more, with its emphasis on dressing up as ghosts, ghouls and witches, has largely been as a result of its popularity in the USA. But whether or not you believe in lost souls and things that go bump in the night, what better time for a party to lift our own spirits as we head into winter? And, you have to admit, there is something magical about a bonfire that lights up the black autumn night.

Apple Strudel The Autumn harvest brings a glut of apples. Make the most of them with this delicious strudel recipe. Preparation time: 20 mins Cooking time: 40-45 mins Serves 6-8

Ingredients

Method

750g/1lb 10oz Bramley apples, peeled, cored, quartered and sliced

Preheat the oven to 190C/170C Fan/Gas 5. Line a baking tray with baking parchment.

1½ tsp ground cinnamon

Mix the quartered apples with the cinnamon, lemon zest and juice, sugar and raisins. In a small frying pan, melt 20g/¾oz butter and fry the breadcrumbs until golden-brown, then add these to the apple mixture.

½ unwaxed lemon, zest only 2 tsp lemon juice 100g/3½oz golden caster sugar 75g/2½oz raisins 95g/3½oz butter 40g/1½oz white breadcrumbs 6 large sheets filo pastry 1 tbsp icing sugar

Melt the remaining butter in a pan. On a clean, dry tea-towel lay a sheet of the filo and brush with some of the melted butter. Lay another sheet on top and repeat until you have used all the filo. Layering the pastry with the melted butter helps to create flaky layers. Place the filling along the length of the pastry along one side about 2-3cm/1in from the edge. Using the tea-towel to help you, roll the pastry up to enclose the filling. Tuck the ends in and roll the strudel seam-side down onto the lined baking sheet. Brush with the remaining melted butter. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until golden-brown. Leave to cool to room temperature and dust with icing sugar. Slice and serve with cream, ice cream or custard.

Could you give a Cat a good home? Cat Protection’s Lea Valley Branch is run entirely by volunteers operating in the postcodes: EN1, EN2, EN3, EN4, EN6, EN7, EN8, EN9, N9, N18 and N21. Within this large area they support the national charity’s simple and clear objectives:

• Adopting – to find good homes for cats in need.

• Neutering – to support and encourage the neutering of cats and kittens.

• Informing – to improve people’s

understanding of cats and their care through education and advice.

The Branch’s main effort is concentrated on looking after cats that come into care until good homes can be found for them. If the cat has been a stray, they see if it is microchipped and, if so, try to trace the owner. Each cat in care has a full veterinary health check, treatments as required, vaccinations, worm and flea treatment and, if necessary, is spayed or neutered. Once all this is done and the cat is in full health, they try to match it to the right home. You can see some of the cats and kittens in care awaiting new homes on the Adopt A Cat pages of their website www.leavalley.cats.org.uk. To adopt a cat or kitten, complete the simple website form, e-mail their Adoption Officer at cplvadoption@live.co.uk or call their Local Helpline on 0333 567 4746. Whilst waiting to be adopted, the cats are cared for by volunteer fosterers in their homes or in specially-designed pens in their gardens. Wherever they are kept, the cats require constant care to keep them cosy and clean in addition to transporting 16

them to and from vets. Other volunteers look after Sponsored cats - those that are too old or sick to be re-homed. Yet others organise the ordering and delivery of food, litter and other supplies. In addition, the Branch issues vouchers to cat owners to cover the cost of neutering their cats. Other volunteers organise the trapping and neutering of feral cats, often in large colonies. To defray some of the costs involved in all this work, adopters are charged a fee of £75. All other funds are raised by volunteers through events, such as quiz nights, and by running a shop at 145 Chase Side, Enfield; no funds are received from outside agencies. For more information on any of their work, to volunteer or for help on cat care issues and advice on what to do for a cat in need, please call their Local Helpline 0333 567 4746.
