To the 5th International BACCN Conference 2015 Dear BACCN Members and Colleagues On behalf of the National Board I would like to extend to you a warm welcome to London and BACCN 2015, and to thank you for attending and contributing to the British Association of Critical Care Nurses’ 30th Annual Conference and our 5th International conference since BACCNs’ inception back in 1980.

This year’s conference is a truly wonderful and celebratory occasion – as an organisation we are 30 years old at conference. We have strived over these 30 years to bring together nursing and critical care colleagues to share views, research findings, passion and expertise and this year is no exception. We have assembled over 450 colleagues from around the world with eminent speakers from the US, Canada and the UK joining us in our aims to reach a Global Ambition to exchange scientific, educational and practical ideas about how to provide high quality services and excellent and safe care to our critically ill patients in the most cost efficient and best way that we can. All of our 13 BACCN regions are represented here at conference and for those of you who are not BACCN members or are not resident in the UK we hope that you will find opportunities to engage and share ideas with the BACCN nationally and locally, to explore possibilities for the future and consider membership with the BACCN so that we can continue to represent Critical Care Nursing and our patients for the next 30 years.

This is our first ever conference in London, as it can be an expensive city to host a conference in, we took this decision after great consideration some 18 months back. And now seeing the opportunities London affords us and the academic and social programme that has come together, combined with a record number of delegates booked to come to conference has reinforced our views that this was the right decision to come to this amazing city.

We are delighted to be at the Park Plaza, who have provided enormous support to this event and to have members of the Southern region supporting National conference this year, from promoting this event regionally, provision of the masterclass at Guys and St. Thomas’, to onsite help supporting delegates. If you are interested in joining the Southern region or any other BACCN regional committee please visit the BACCN stand and we will put you in touch with someone local to you whilst you’re here.

Please join us at the Welcome Reception on Sunday evening for an opportunity to hear from our Chair, Annette Richardson who will be presenting her Pearls of Wisdom on some of the hot topics in critical care in 2015. We are also joined by some surprise local dignitaries that are truly unique to London so don’t miss it…

If you like to keep fit then join us for a fun but effective military fitness session that incorporates exercise and team work. There will be a range of activities that will leave you energised for the day ahead. The sessions take place on Monday & Tuesday morning from 7:30 – 08:00 in Archbishop’s Park located next to Lambeth Palace Gardens.

Our scientific programme focuses on quality and safety: we have plenty of sessions for you to immerse your selves in with four key note speakers throughout the two days, another series of simulation sessions, numerous workshops, poster and paper presentations and a dedicated research symposium.

Between the main programme there are plenty of breaks to allow you to network with each other, and with our colleagues from industry who can show you the latest equipment and innovations when you visit their stands. Don’t forget to complete our Exhibitor Passport to go into a free prize draw for £50.00 off next year’s conference.

Our 30th birthday gala dinner on Monday evening is one I hope that you will remember as it promises to be glitzy, glamorous and down right groovy. Starting at 19:30 we will announce the winners of the annual BACCN awards, enjoy a three course meal and meet some past Chairs of BACCN, we will then be escorted to our very own Casino Royale in the Thames suite where we will be able to play roulette whilst raising funds for Sepsis UK Trust and dance the night away with ‘Lost in Music’, allowing you the chance to relax and unwind before day two of conference.

With all these educational and social opportunities I challenge you to connect with someone that you don’t know whilst you’re here at conference to discuss your own perspectives, perhaps on a paper you may have heard whilst here or what inspires you in your work.

General Information Conference Sessions

Parking

Conference sessions will take place throughout the Riverbank Park Plaza Hotel. All opening remarks, keynotes and plenary sessions will take place in the Plaza Suite (Main Conference Room) on level -4. The programme will then split into streamed sessions which will take place in the following breakout rooms:

There is no parking on site at the Riverbank Park Plaza. The nearest car park is a 10 minute walk away at St Georges Wharf.

The Exhibition features over 40 companies and will be held in the Ballroom located on Level -2. Catering stands will be located in the main exhibition area and the foyer . Poster screens will be located throughout the exhibition.

There are male and female toilets located on each floor of the conference. There is also a cloakroom to leave luggage and coats. We cannot be held responsible for loss or damage to anything you leave in the cloakroom.

Exploring a holistic approach to patient care at the 5th International BACCN Conference10.50 – 11.50 in the Thames Suite, Park Plaza Riverbank Hotel, London, 8th September 2015 Hear from John Owen-Bell, Charge Nurse and Dr Sanjoy Shah ICU consultant from the Adult Critical Care Unit at Bristol Royal Infirmary who will explore how the results and impact reported from their multi-modal approach can be achieved through both holistic and drug-regimen modifications and how dexmedetomidine can be used effectively as a part of this multi-modal approach.

Meeting funded and organised by Orion Pharma UK Ltd. Dexdor 100 micrograms per ml concentrate for solution for infusion (dexmedetomidine) Prescribing Information Indication: Sedation of adult ICU patients requiring sedation level not deeper than arousal in response to verbal stimulation (RASS 0 to -3).

Dosage and administration: Hospital use only, by healthcare professionals skilled in management of patients requiring intensive care.

Administer only as diluted intravenous infusion using controlled infusion device. Dexmedetomidine is very potent and the infusion rate is given per hour. Switch patients already intubated and sedated to dexmedetomidine with initial infusion rate of 0.7 micrograms/kg/h and adjust stepwise within range 0.2 to 1.4 micrograms/kg/h to achieve desired sedation level. Consider lower starting infusion rate for frail patients. After dose adjustment, new steady state sedation level may not be reached for up to one hour. Do not exceed maximum dose of 1.4 micrograms/kg/h. Switch patients failing to achieve an adequate level of sedation with maximum dose to an alternative sedative agent.

Loading dose not recommended. Administer propofol or midazolam if needed until clinical effects of Dexdor established. No experience in use of Dexdor for more than 14 days. Use for longer than this period should be regularly reassessed. Elderly: No dosage adjustment required.

Renal impairment: No dosage adjustment required. Hepatic impairment: Caution advised; consider reduced dose. Paediatric population: No recommendation can be made. Contraindications: Hypersensitivity. Advanced heart block (grade 2 or 3) unless paced. Uncontrolled hypotension. Acute cerebrovascular conditions. Warnings and precautions: Intended for use in intensive care setting, use in other environments not recommended. Continuous cardiac monitoring required. Monitor respiration in non-intubated patients. Do not use as induction agent for intubation or to provide sedation during muscle relaxant use. Dexdor reduces heart rate and blood pressure but at higher concentrations causes peripheral vasoconstriction and hypertension. Not suitable in patients who will not tolerate lack of deep sedation and easy rousability. Users should be ready to use alternative sedative for acute control of agitation or during procedures, especially during the first few hours of treatment. Caution with: pre-existing bradycardia; high physical fitness and slow resting heart rate; pre-existing hypotension, hypovolaemia, chronic hypotension or reduced functional reserve; severe ventricular dysfunction; the elderly; impaired peripheral autonomic activity (e.g. due to spinal cord injury); ischaemic heart disease or severe cerebrovascular disease; severe hepatic impairment; severe neurological disorders such as head injury and after neurosurgery. Reduce dose or discontinue if signs of myocardial or cerebral ischaemia.

Additive effects may occur with other substances with sedative or cardiovascular actions. Some patients receiving Dexdor have been observed to be arousable and alert when stimulated; this alone should not be considered as evidence of lack of efficacy. Do not use as sole treatment in status epilepticus. Consider possibility of withdrawal reaction if patient develops agitation and hypertension shortly after stopping dexmedetomidine. Not recommended in malignant hyperthermia-sensitive individuals. Discontinue treatment in event of sustained unexplained fever. Undesirable effects: Very common (>1/10): Bradycardia, hypotension, hypertension. Common (1>100 to <1/10): Hyperglycaemia, hypoglycaemia, agitation, myocardial ischaemia or infarction, tachycardia, respiratory depression, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, withdrawal syndrome, hyperthermia. Uncommon (1>1,000 to <1/100): Metabolic acidosis, hypoalbuminaemia, hallucination, atrioventricular block first degree, cardiac output decreased, dyspnoea, apnoea, abdominal distension, drug ineffective, thirst. Recruitment Consensus Forum This forum is aimed at band 7 or above nurses who have responsibility for recruitment and retention of nurses.

The BACCN has undertaken two events (London and Glasgow) specifically focusing upon recruitment and retention issues. These events highlighted that hospitals are having difficulties with recruiting nurses and are undertaking a number of strategies relating to recruitment of nurses. The BACCN wants to build upon these events by developing a consensus document relating to best practice for recruitment and retention within critical care.

Research Symposium:

Developing and testing interventions to promote recovery and rehabilitation after critical illness The symposium will include 5 papers, a general review followed by examples from within ICU, prior to hospital discharge and once patients have been discharged home. These include of a qualitative study that explored relatives and patients views on direct involvement in care delivery, the use of diaries, the role of a generic healthcare assistant in providing augmented support prior to hospital discharge and the development of an experientially meaningful website to support recovery after critical illness.

If you are presenting an oral or plenary talk at the conference please go to the registration desk where you will be shown to the speaker preview desk located in the conference foyer. From here you can check through your presentation and upload any files to the show laptop.

If you are presenting a ViPER session please go to the registration desk where you will be shown to the screen displaying your poster. We will then show you through to the AV team to upload any presentation slides and show you through to the room you will be presenting in. If you arrive during session time we will introduce you to the AV team during the next break.

During your ViPER presentation your poster will be displayed on the screen in your session room.

Poster Displays If you are displaying a poster at the conference please go to the registration desk where you will be shown to the screen displaying your poster. Poster screens will display posters in a continuous loop for the duration of the conference.
