SEND Identification in Year 7

At Chessington, our SEN identification is based on the ‘Wave of Intervention Model’; which involves developing, implementing and maintaining evidencebased strategies for SEN students. All Interventions at Chessington are data driven and outcomes focused. This is in line with the new SEN Code of Practice which makes it clear that additional intervention and support cannot compensate for a lack of good teaching. As such, it reflects that high quality teaching, which is appropriately adjusted, is the first step in responding to possible special educational needs. For students who require special educational needs provision, the SEN Code sets out the principle of a graduated response The aim is to ensure right support, right place, right time

The Wave of Intervention Model

This is a three-tiered model. Wave one needs are met by quality first teaching in lessons. This is based on the whole school understanding that Every Teacher is a Teacher of SEND. At Chessington for those students who do not meet the SEND threshold we continue to monitor them on our SENCO Radar. All students identified as requiring Wave One interventions will receive effectively adapted learning opportunities provided by their class teachers as part of the National Curriculum. The quality first teaching at this stage will be expected to meet the needs of all learners Where Wave One interventions are deemed inadequate to meet students’ needs, they will receive Wave Two interventions. It is anticipated that this will be offered to fifteen percent (13%) of the SEN students. Importantly, students who receive Wave Two interventions will also continue to

receive Wave One; Wave two does not replace the core curriculum; it is there to supplement it. The students who receive Wave Two interventions will be referred to as SEN Support Group. Wave Three intervention is aimed at a small group of students with EHC plans. Wave Three supplements Wave One and Two but does not replace them. Interventions at Wave Three may be delivered by specialists / SEN teacher / SENCO / external agencies. Only five percent (4%) of all SEN students will require Wave Three interventions.

SEN Procedures

Our aim is for students’ SEND to be identified as quickly as possible Most students with SEN have been identified before or on entry and appropriate steps will have been taken to meet their needs. Once a special education need has been identified then an action cycle of assess, plan do review will be put in place The SEN cycle of intervention is to ensure that an effective match between the needs of the student and the intervention is realised

Assessment Process

The teacher’s role is vital in providing a a clear analysis and evaluation of the student’s needs This should draw on the teacher’s day to day experience of working with the student and the evidence from the Form Tutors, Student

SEND Identification in Year 7

Support Officers (SSO) and the Heads of Year (HOY). The SEND team forms part of the inclusion team that meets regularly to evaluate student needs. This allows the school to have a comprehensive picture of the student’s attainment, behaviour and relevant comparative information regarding the student’s development The SENCO will be in a position to guide and support the teaching staff in gathering assessment information and interpreting it The experience and views of parents/carers, the student and advice from external services also form part of the assessment process. In some instances, the involvement of health or social services might be deemed appropriate If these professionals are already involved the SENCO will contact them once parental consent has been obtained.

Once the assessment process is completed and the decision is taken that the student should be provided with SEN support, then the parents/carers will be informed. The teacher, SENCO, HOY and SSO will agree in consultation with the student and parents/carers on the following: intervention being offered; support being provided; the expected outcomes on progress, development or behaviour and a date for completing a review. Importantly, all the information about how to ‘match challenge to need’ should be shared with the student’s teachers via the student support plan Also new targets should be set.

This includes free school meals (even if your child does not want to eat a main meal) but also gives parents and schools access to assistance with payments for school trips and educational resources such as textbooks and revision guides

We would like to remind all parents of Chessington School that it may be helpful for them to check whether they are eligible to apply to the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames for this support Families who receive certain benefits may be eligible for free school meals Your child is eligible if you are in receipt of one of the following benefits:

• income support

• income-based job seeker's allowance

Break and Lunch Money

There are three ways to top up your card:

1. Pay online via schoolgateway.com. Once the student is registered on the school database, please log on with the email and address we hold for you. Please download the smartphone app and you will be able to top up your child’s catering money account and also pay for trips as well as receive messages from the school via this app.

2. Pay by cash. This is done personally by students at the encashment points in the school atrium. All denominations of silver coins are accepted. Most families find that a budget of between £2 50 and £4 per day is adequate.

3. Free school meal. Any student entitled to a free school meal will have their card automatically credited daily This allowance only entitles them to a free lunch. Should students wish to buy snacks at break time, they will need to add extra cash to top up their card.

Homework

Homework has a very important place in the life of Chessington School. Not only does it increase the learning time, but it is also a valuable point of contact between parents/carers and the school. It is a really good opportunity for all of us to work together for the benefit of the students

Homework is recorded on ClassCharts It is available for you to see – we have a link to this on our website Each student and parent/carer will be issued with a personalised login

Below are the questions most commonly asked by parents and carers:

Why is homework set?

We believe that by completing homework our students will become independent learners and not just rely on information given to them by their teachers. Homework allows students to become self-motivators and improves their personal organisation

How will I know what subjects have been set on which day?

You can check the specific homework and due date on ClassCharts.

How much time should my child spend on homework?

Each piece of homework will have an amount of time expected for completion on ClassCharts. Students are also expected to read independently

How can I help my child with their homework?

You can help them best by showing an

interest and talking to them about it. Encourage them to get in a routine of doing homework at the same time each day and at a set time at the weekends. Provide a quiet and comfortable place for them to work, away from all electronic distractions and do not let them do homework late at night

How will I know if my child is completing homework?

Please ask to see their homework in their exercise books and check ClassCharts. Students, without a valid reason, will be expected to catch up on all work missed in detention after school

What if my child tells me that no work has been set?

This is highly unlikely First of all check ClassCharts but there is always extra that students can be doing independently online. If you are concerned please contact the Form Tutor

If we all work together to get students into the homework habit, then we are building a solid foundation for success during their time at school and beyond.

ClassCharts

Class Charts is an app that allows teachers, parents and students to keep track of attendance, positive behaviour, homework and detentions.

Detentions:

C1 Detention is 30 minutes – where appropriate according to the professional judgement of a classroom teacher. Teacher will have a restorative conversation with students when they are sitting the detention

Attendance Matters

Five reasons why attending school is so important:

1 Students have the right to an education

2. Parents/Carers have a legal responsibility to ensure their child attends school. Schools and Local Authorities have a duty to ensure that students take up this right

3. There is a direct link between high student absence and low attainment in school

4 Getting students to attend school regularly and be on time is a very important skill for life beyond school

5. Poor attendance can potentially lead to students being isolated from their friends, risk of bullying, poor and unsettled behaviour, anti-social behaviour or criminal activity.

Ten Attendance Tips: How can I help my child attend School regularly?

1. Ensure they pack their bag the night before

2. Ensure that their uniform is ready, especially after the holidays or weekend

3. Get them to bed at a reasonable hour so that they get a good night’s sleep – Don’t let them take their phone to bed

4. Set the alarm clock early enough to allow plenty of time to get ready properly

5. Make sure they have some breakfast

6. Remind them to set off in the car, the train, the bus, or start walking early enough so that they are not late: punctuality is important (students on school site by 08:25)

7 Check to make sure they have everything they need – pencil case, books, PE kit, bus/train pass, lunch money etc

8 Talk to your child about what they did in school today

9. Ensure your child has completed any homework or revised for any tests (as this can cause undue anxiety if not completed) Use Class Charts to stay up to date on what homework is being set

10 If you are at all worried about your child’s school attendance please contact the school and their Pastoral Team as soon as possible so that we can offer support.

What do I do if my child is ill and cannot attend School?

1 Parents or carers must inform the school by telephone, text or email as soon as possible on the day of the absence (Attendance Officer:

Attendance Matters (continued)

Mrs G O’Neill on 020 89741 156 ext 207, email attendance@chessington.kingston.sch.uk or text 020 3137 6796)

2. On the student’s return to school, they need to bring a letter in to Mrs G O’Neill to explain the reasons for the student’s absence is required, signed by the parent/carer.

If you do not contact the school regarding an absence, then it becomes a safeguarding issue. If we do not receive a message we will always assume that your child is on their way to school. Therefore when they do not arrive, we will begin texting you, phoning and even sometimes doing a house visit. This is for the safety of your child and we hope you can help us in communicating absence, to avoid us using resources in this way.

Curriculum Route Maps and Plans

This is an example of Tier 1 – Our Subject Route Maps. This shows the journey that a student at Chessington School takes through each subject and shows what they will learn about.

This is helpful so that you can speak to your child about what they are learning and prepare them for what is coming up. All our subjects have a route map and guide on our website which can be found here: Curriculum route maps and plans

Frequently Asked Questions

What

if I don’t know anybody else starting at Chessington?

We have looked closely at the names of students and where they are joining us from. If you are the only one coming from your school we already have the name of somebody that we will introduce you to and hopefully you will become friends.

Can I bring my mobile phone into school?

You can bring it to school, but it is your responsibility to keep it safe and turned off. Remember the ‘not seen and not heard’ rule otherwise it will be confiscated.

Do I get a locker?

There are some lockers available on a first come, first served basis. If you would like a locker you will need to bring your own padlock to use it.

What

if I get lost around the school?

The layout of the building is very easy to understand and find your way about. But, we were all new to the school once so just ask an older student or a member of staff who will be happy to help you.

What will happen if I am late for school?

Being on time is key to you fully understanding what you need to do to be

successful in every lesson. If you are late without a valid reason you will be given detention on the same day.

What do I do if I feel unwell?

Tell your teacher. You will be asked to wait until the end of the lesson (unless it is an emergency) and then you will be able to go to Student Reception where someone will talk to you and see how you are

Can I go to the toilet during lesson time?

All students are responsible for ensuring that they use the toilet during break and lunchtime You will not be allowed out of lesson time unless it is an emergency or you have been issued a toilet pass by your Pastoral Support Officer.

If I don’t feel happy or I have fallen out with a friend what should I do?

Talk to your Form Tutor, Pastoral Support Officer or Head of Year. They are there to make sure that you are happy and to help you if you are not. If you have fallen out with a friend they will offer to sit down with you both and have a restorative meeting.
