Student Success Infrastructure sparks innovative projects The college created the Student Success Infrastructure (SSI) in 2013 to institutionalize the 2013-2017 Strategic Plan as well as to establish a collaborative culture focused on the success of all ECC students. Through the work of the SSI teams and taskforces, the college funded multiple projects that will shape the future of teaching and learning at ECC. These projects include: ACE Faculty & Staff Development The Academy for College Excellence (ACE) program Faculty Experiential Learning Institute (FELI) is a professional development program for faculty which focuses on affective intelligence and support for students, working styles, and classroom leadership techniques.

Transition Academy This program for area high school students is geared toward improving college readiness, affective knowledge, and cognitive skills.

Student Success Week This initiative supports a series of events to celebrate student success, including motivational speakers and recognition for students who complete 20 hours successfully in one year.

Student Planning Module The Student Planning Module is an online graphic interface allowing students a one-stop shop for all planning and registration needs. Students will be trained to use this tool as the single point of entry for all registration and academic planning tasks.

or healthcare practitioners, maintaining certifications through continuing education is essential, but finding high-quality training close to home can be a challenge.

“Much of what is available is outside our district,” says Jenny Bloomer, a physical therapy assistant who works at Clare Oaks in Bartlett. “It can also be expensive and impersonal, lectures to large auditoriums from vendors who know nothing about our community’s needs.”

That’s why Bloomer, a 2001 graduate of ECC’s PTA program, signed up when the school announced its first continuing

education workshops for healthcare practitioners. “I turned to a trusted resource,” she says. “And the workshop was led by experts who were also, in a sense, neighbors, currently practicing, hands on.”

Bob Tripicchio, PT, DSc, was one of Bloomer’s teachers, introducing her to the Ozer Nelson Payton (OPN) Method.

“Traditional rehab is paternalistic,” explains Tripicchio, president of Community Physical Therapy and Associates in Addison. “The OPN process uses a cycle of questions to encourage people in rehab to set their own goals.”

Bloomer’s work at Clare Oaks was transformed. “There was one woman who would, with a traditional plan, be working on walking 150 feet and lifting 10 pounds.

Not very inspiring. I discovered what she really wanted: to be able to load her washing machine. That made her independent. That was a real motivation.”

To date, ECC has launched continuing education for radiography and massage therapy professionals. Other fields will follow, according to Wendy Miller, dean of health professions.

“It is exciting to see ECC try something new,” says Bloomer. “ECC is dedicated to the needs of its alumni, even after they graduate, giving us more tools to be successful, and improving the healthcare we provide.”

Middle School Fridays bring a vision of the future to young learners “Every August,” says Michelle Skinner, a teacher at Ellis Middle School in Elgin. “I start pestering Principal Hayes, asking each day ‘Did you hear from ECC yet?’ I’m as excited about Middle School Fridays as our students are.”

Middle School Fridays bring approximately 1,600 middle-school students to the Elgin Community College campus each year to get a glimpse of college life, including tours and mock classroom experiences led by ECC students. Approximately three-quarters of the students who visit will be the first generation of their family to attend college—provided Middle School Fridays have their intended impact.

“The trip offers students a glimpse of college we can’t provide through books or videos,” says Skinner.

“The experience is profound,” says Heather Van Antwerp, a teacher at Canton Middle School in Streamwood. “You can see the transformation. Once our students see themselves in college classes, they have a goal. It’s no longer something abstract or exclusive.”

Middle School Fridays grew out of a request made in 2004 by a sixth-grade teacher to Stephanie Bonvallet, a recruitment coordinator in ECC’s admissions office.

Today the office partners with the Alliance for College Readiness and reaches out to the 19 middle schools of Community College District 509, sending speakers to classrooms that cannot make the trip.

“Students need to see that college is a choice they can make for themselves,” says Bonvallet. “Your choices are going to take you places. If ECC is a stop along the way to your success, well, that’s why we’re here.”

lgin Community College has made the first weeks of school a little easier for parents and students through Project Backpack. More than 7,000 backpacks filled with school supplies have been distributed since 2010.

According to Pete Schaefer, president and CEO of the Northern Illinois Food Bank, the organization’s partner food pantries see an increase in families seeking food assistance during the back-to-school season because of those additional expenses. Project Backpack provided the ideal opportunity to make a difference.

The assistance was welcomed by the community, as some families stood in line as early as 10 p.m. on the night before the event. No one left empty-handed.

“We’ve built some great relationships each year with our organizations,” Storey says.

ECC clubs connect students to community When the Organization of Latin American Students (OLAS) chose to recognize Creekside Elementary Vice Principal Aaron Mendoza, they weren’t just honoring his support of the Latino community. They were also highlighting how ECC’s clubs and student organizations build community on and off campus.

“Once you join OLAS you become family, whether it’s getting together to study, for homework, or going to conferences to learn how to become better students and hopefully better future employees,” says Yesenia Saldana, OLAS president.

OLAS honors a former member of their club each year for outstanding service, and the connection between OLAS and Mendoza doesn’t end there. They are also teaming up to read to the ESL students at Creekside to help enhance their English.

“Having positive role models for my students is great, having the role models come in and speak to them one-on-one makes this experience a lasting one,” adds Mendoza.

OLAS is one of 30 clubs and organizations at ECC that enhance students’ experiences outside of the classroom.

“OLAS has kept me connected to the community, while my fellow OLAS members keep me motivated to always be and do my best,” Saldana says.

arah Nelson understands what’s expected of her as a player for Elgin Community College Women’s Basketball Coach Jerry McLaughlin. On and off the court, McLaughlin expects Nelson and his players to be model student-athletes who excel in their studies.

“School is very important,” Nelson says.

“Those goals are important to him, but he wants them to be important to us too.”

Athletes Commit to Excellence (ACE), a program started by McLaughlin and fellow coaches, helps reinforce the concept of academic and athletic success for all of the college’s student-athletes. Some features

of the ACE program include studying five hours weekly in the Renner Academic Library (student-athletes must sign in and out) and use tutoring sessions if needed.

“We kind of set the example,” McLaughlin, says of his team. His players consistently work hard on and off the court each season. Although the athletic effort attracts potential suitors in four-year colleges and universities, he says academic excellence could seal the deal.

Nelson appreciates the structure provided by the program. She’s learned how to juggle all the aspects of the program, which is different than when she was in high school.

“It’s all on you here,” she says.

“When you have a 3.0-4.0 GPA, you know how to manage your time,” says McLaughlin, adding high GPAs also mean the potential to earn more scholarship money.

Better Leadership Student-teacher duo team up for college success When Justin Kelly was a student in a class taught by Mary Perkins, EdD, he had no idea he would end up back there two years later. But this time, instead of being a student, he assists her as a co-facilitator of the introductory class College 101, a partnership that benefits them as well as the students they teach.

Perkins, associate dean of communications and sciences, was impressed with Kelly’s military background and his maturity. She says Kelly has a lot to offer her as a teacher and as a mentor to his peers.

“He can hold me accountable and provide feedback,” Perkins says. “We have developed an honest relationship, so he can say to me, ‘let’s think about doing something different.’ It’s really nice to have another set of hands to support the students.”

Kelly, president of Phi Theta Kappa, works alongside Perkins to lead activities and discussions. He also connects with students outside the classroom.

Kelly and Perkins have also served as committee members for the 20-in-1 awareness campaign, aimed at helping students increase their chances of graduating by earning 20 credits during their first year.

Kelly says Perkins has become a friend and mentor.

“We bridge the gap between old school and new school,” he says. “She is there to advise me. And I get to share the student perspective. I feel like my opinions actually matter. We are a pretty good team.”

P

edro Burns once motored wildly through life, but he later managed to grab hold of the handlebars and steer to ECC. Waiting for him was Trevell Eddins, EdD, the college’s director of admissions, the person to which Burns say he owes his success.

Burns, a recovering drug addict, who has been clean for 18 years, says ECC’s director of admissions changed the trajectory of his life.

After graduating from high school in the late 1970s, Burns endured a lot of trials and tribulations. His wake-up call came in 2010, after he was hospitalized and needed to have quadruple bypass surgery.

It was then that he realized that he had been given a second chance at life.

Less than a year later, Burns decided to enroll at ECC, but he was apprehensive.

As an adult who’d been out of school for many years, he didn’t know where to start, and he was worried he wouldn’t fit in.

“I wanted someone to take me by the hand. This young man took his time with me. He is always available,” says Burns of the assistance he has received from Eddins. “Whether he’s giving advice or looking over a paper, he is always there for me.”

Eddins says Burns deserves all the credit for his hard work and accomplishments, including his induction into the Phi Theta Kappa international honor society.

“He is the reason that I chose this profession,” says Eddins. “ It makes me feel good to know that I have been so impactful. I have the best job in the world.”

In May 2014, Burns will graduate with a certificate in substance abuse counseling and will return to ECC in the fall 2014 semester to pursue a degree in human services.

ECC students shine at Illinois SkillsUSA championships Elgin Community College students Richard Iovan and Sarah Schaffer won first-place gold medals in the Illinois SkillsUSA competition in April. ECC students won 10 medals during the state competition.

Iovan, of Belvidere, led a sweep of the sheet metal competition in the state competition. Schaffer (photo), of St. Charles, won in the nursing competition. Noelle Hoppe, of Elgin, earned a gold medal in the state-only competition of interactive preschool bulletin board.

Two ECC students chosen as Coca-Cola bronze scholars Elgin Community College students Pamela Tomany, of Lake in the Hills, and Susan Piotrowski, of Algonquin, are two of 50 students nationwide that are selected as Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Bronze Scholars. The honor includes a $1,000 stipend from the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation and a medallion. Both were nominated for the award via being selected by ECC as members of the All-Illinois Community College Academic Team.

ECC named a Military Friendly School for third consecutive year G.I. Jobs magazine named ECC a Military Friendly School for 2014, which is the third consecutive year the college has received the designation. The magazine, one of the premier publications for people transitioning from military to civilian life, ranked ECC in the top 20 percent of the

more than 8,000 colleges and universities nationwide it surveyed to be designated as a Military Friendly School. ECC provides a number of resources for veterans, such as ensuring support for those who are disabled, counseling assistance, financial aid, and educational benefits assistance.

Organization honors Alliance for College Readiness as change agent The Alliance for College Readiness, of which ECC is a part, has been honored as a Change Agent by College Changes Everything. The initiative, which works to increase the number of college-ready high school graduates, is the award’s first recipient.

In bestowing the honor, College Changes Everything notes ECC recently received the Bellwether Award for the Alliance and helped decrease student remediation levels in math. The Alliance for College Readiness is composed of more than 250 teachers and other educational leaders from ECC and public school districts 300, 301, 303, and U-46.

College Changes Everything is a college access movement initiated by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission. It is part of a statewide effort to increase the proportion of adults with high-quality degrees and credentials to 60 percent by 2025.

Konny receives CFO award Vice President of Business and Finance Sharon Konny was honored in July with the CFO Award by the Daily Herald Business Ledger for her role in contributing to the success of the region’s economic growth and stability.

The award is given to chief financial officers and others who are responsible for the fiscal management of their businesses. Konny was one of 17 financial executives from the Chicago suburbs who received the award.

Under Konny’s leadership, ECC has been able to retain its Aaa bond rating from Moody’s Investors Service since 2009, in addition to an AA+ bond rating from Standard & Poor’s. The college also has been recognized several times by the Government Finance Officers Association for its budget presentations and financial reporting.

Library receives silver LEED certification Elgin Community College’s Renner Academic Library and Learning Resources building has received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED is intended to provide building owners and operators a concise framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations, and maintenance solutions.

Opened in 2012, the new library features 14 technology equipped study rooms, three large classrooms for library instruction, more than 120 open public computers, a separate computer lab, the Food For Thought Café, and a quiet Reading Room. Three times larger than the original library, the additional space allows more patrons to use the building, in addition to being more accessible to Community College District 509 residents.

Financial literacy program receives business honor Elgin Community College has received the 2013 Innovation Award from the National Association of College and University Business Officers for its financial literacy program.

This award recognizes the achievement of higher education institutions in the areas of process improvement, where institutions have successfully re-engineered or designed a program, improving service delivery of administrative activity in response to a campus need. The award also recognizes higher education institutions that have successfully reduced costs, increased revenues, or improved productivity in response to a campus need.

ECC’s financial literacy program provides students seeking to take out a student loan with valuable loan counseling to help them avoid unnecessary debt. (Student loan debt now exceeds $1 trillion nationally.) Advisers will review students’ loan budget worksheets and will help them determine how much money they will need to spend each semester for tuition and fees, books and supplies, room and board, and other expenses related to the cost of attendance.

Foundation Accomplishments Fiscal Year 2013

(July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013)

The ECC Foundation Board is pleased to share the following accomplishments and milestones resulting from the generosity of donors, prudent stewardship, and our work over the past year. Together we: • Awarded 178 scholarships totaling $114,050 and supporting 164 ECC students.

• Grew foundation assets by 29% to $5.3 million.

• Experienced a 16% increase in active supporters, celebrating 329 first-time donors.

• Provided $22,662 in additional funding to support college programs.

• Launched the Purses with Purpose giving circle, engaging 18 inaugural members and eight friends to support personal empowerment through the gift of education.

Eight scholarship awards were granted as a result of this initiative.

• Opened 21 new funds, of which 13 are endowed to provide perpetual support to Elgin Community College and our students. Included among them are:

iane Lukas says ECC was all she needed to prepare for a very successful engineering career.

“ECC was my formal education and that’s it,” says Lukas, a 1971 alumna and president of Elgin-based Hampton, Lenzini and Renwick, Inc. (HLR), a civil and structural engineering firm. “I feel good about that. I received a great education and got a great foundation upon which to build my career.”

Lukas knows the quality of the academic programs at ECC. That’s why her firm has hired many students as interns, and graduates as employees.

experienced faculty who taught industry techniques that were immediately applicable and, in some cases, ahead of their time.

Stack now works with Lukas and other engineers on drafting plans for projects, most notably the reconstruction of the U.S. 20/McLean Boulevard interchange right outside HLR’s door.

“I was raw when I first started at HLR,” Stack says.

“But any experience is good experience. They (HLR) want to help you and help you get better.”

arol Broeker knows the importance of obtaining a good education. The retired teacher of nearly 30 years says the Purses with Purpose giving circle offers her a unique opportunity—a chance to make a direct connection with scholarship recipients.

“Purses with Purpose allows me to help empower women in need and help them fulfill their dreams,” Broeker says. “I’ve come to realize the importance of this endeavor. It has been the most satisfying and rewarding experience I have ever been a part of.”

As an inaugural member of the women’s giving circle, she has played an active role in helping students reach their educational goals for the past two years.

Broeker, along with other members, evaluates

essays, conducts interviews with candidates, and selects scholarship recipients from a pool of qualified candidates.

“It is quite an experience,” she says. “Interviewing candidates gives me insight into each woman’s passion, need, desire, and determination to continue their education. I am impacted by their stories.”

She says being an alumna of ECC and playing a role in helping students to continue their education makes giving back an honor and a privilege.

“I feel compelled to give,” she adds.
