Welcome from The President
ECC/HANH Turns Inward Around Racial Equity, Inclusion & Making a Change In present-day Connecticut, Black and Latinx households have been hardest hit by the COVID-19 crisis – this includes greater rates of infection, job loss, and housing instability. These facts are linked to a history of segregated public housing and schools, poverty, red-lining among many other discriminatory practices that stem from a troubling and racist of US Housing Policy. ECC/HANH is creating the space to explore these issues more critically and to understand what it means to do the work at the agency through a racial equity frame. This work is a precursor to deeper equity work in partnership with Co-Creating Effective and Inclusive (cont’d pg. 7)

These past few months have been unlike any other. As we dealt with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, all our operations had to shift and change in new ways. I want to begin this message with my thanks and appreciation for the many ways in which our residents, participants, staff and partners have demonstrated flexibility, patience and innovation as we have moved through these past few months. Throughout the pandemic, my guiding thoughts have been how to keep people safe – which meant physical distanced – yet still connected. Many of you have been essential in our efforts to do this. In the midst of the pandemic, the national incidents of police brutality focused our nation and our local community’s attention on the enduring legacy of racism, discrimination and inequities in our community. The conversations that have ensued are long overdue. We are committed to continuing to focus our efforts on reversing the devastating impact of inequities in housing policy that result in the wealth disparities and segregation that we see today in our neighborhoods and cities and towns throughout CT. Read on in this edition of Homefront about some of our efforts. In community, Karen DuBois-Walton, Ph.D.
