Homefront Creating a Connection with Our Communities and Neighbors

Welcome from the President Spring is in the air. The days are longer and getting brighter. The sounds of birds chirping and buds on trees are all signaling the change of seasons. These signs of renewal are being felt all around ECC/HANH through capital projects, redevelopments, resident classes and graduations, new employees and more. Photo Source: New Haven Independent

Gov. Lamont and Housing Transition Team Push to End CT Homelessness by 2023 The Housing Transition Policy Committee, which includes ECC/HANH President Karen DuBois-Walton and 18 other CT leaders, seeks to end all forms of homelessness in Connecticut by 2023. This commitment is among a list of public recommendations set by the committee and will strongly rely on the coordination of cross-agency resources. The administration highlights that “housing is essential to CT’s economic growth and that the state must preserve and increase its housing stock.” National studies estimate that with the development of every 100 affordable units, 120 construction jobs and 30 long-term jobs are generated, according to the housing policy memo. This translates to the fact that by providing affordable housing options, PHAs actually create an economic engine while also strengthening property values and attracting employers. (Cont’d on pg. 5)

With optimism in the air, ECC/HANH readies itself for new challenges. In March we will complete the Rental Assistance Demonstration (RAD) Program conversion of three properties – Waverly Townhouses, Stanley Justice Landing and Fulton Park. This will allow for investment and improvements in these properties. Further conversions are planned for June and September 2019. Additionally, after receiving approximately $1m from HUD for lead abatement, we are moving aggressively forward with assessment and abatement of lead hazards in our portfolio. All of our efforts are directed at providing the highest quality housing for our residents and to ease the affordable housing crisis in our State. But our efforts alone cannot solve this crisis. We alone cannot house the thousands of families who are in need and are waiting on our waitlists. This is why we have taken a strong stance on increasing regional efforts to develop affordable housing. Some of our efforts our outlined in this edition of Homefront. March offers an opportunity to pause and consider the contributions of women as it is Women’s History Month. Take a moment to consider the accomplishments of the women in your lives. In community,
