Tough Test for EC

It is never easy facing the No. 1 team in the country, but ECAC West rival Plattsburgh State, poses another type of challenge for the Soaring Eagles. Plattsburgh holds the number one scoring offense, averaging 5.44 goals per game, but also has the best scoring defense in the nation. The Cardinals have allowed just four goals all season which averages out to 0.22 goals per game.

National Powers

Elmira College and Plattsburgh State have been perennial powers in Division III women’s ice hockey for the last 13 years. The teams have combined to win five national championships, three for the Soaring Eagles and two for the Cardinals, and have made the NCAA finals a combined eight times.

For the Last 11 Years

Beginning in the 2002-03 season, each regular season meeting between EC and Plattsburgh State has featured two nationally ranked teams, including this year as Plattsburgh is ranked first and Elmira is ranked third in the most recent USCHO poll.

Going On Seven

This will also be the seventh time in the 13-year history of this matchup that both teams will be ranked in the top-5 when they take the ice.

Hit ‘Em With the Atti-Tude

Rookie Anna Tude ’17 went the first 17 games of her Soaring Eagle career without finding the back of the net. But that all changed on Saturday against Buffalo State when the Stockholm, Sweden native punched home her first career goal with 11:04 remaining in the third period. The power play goal pushed EC’s lead to 3-1 and came after the Bengals had made it a one goal game two minutes prior.

Getting It Done From the Blue Line

The Purple and Gold defenders have increased their offensive production over the last four games as the six primary defensemen have combined for five goals and 13 assists. Katie Gaskin ’14 leads the pack with six points on six assists while Ella Stewart ’14, Phoebe Piku ’16, and Brooke Wilgosh ’15 each have three points. Stewart and Piku each have two goals and an assist while Wilgosh has one goal and two assists, including the game-winning goal in overtime against Oswego State on January 25th. Lindsay Burrows ’15 has recorded two assists and McKenna Farole ’16 rounds out the group with one assist.

All-Time vs. Plattsburgh State

These two teams have faced each other at least twice per year since the 2001-02 season, the first year both teams entered NCAA Division III competition. Plattsburgh holds the all-time advantage in the series at 20-16-3 and is one of two programs EC has played at least 10 times that hold a winning record over the Soaring Eagles.

Five with 20-Plus

The Cardinals have received scoring from nearly every skater this season, but are led by the five players with at least 20 points on the year. Shannon Stewart leads the way with 25 points on a teamleading 14 goals and also 11 assists. Bridget Bailey is having a strong second season for Plattsburgh as she is second with 23 points on 10 goals and 13 assists and then there are three players who have recorded 20 points. Ali Vakos has seven goals and 13 assists, Chelsea VanGlahn has tallied six goals and 14 assists, and Allison Era has three goals and a team-high 17 assists from her back-line position.

Lights-Out Goaltending

Sydney Aveson has been a fortress in net all season for Plattsburgh State allowing just three goals in nearly 844 minutes between the pipes. Aveson leads the country in goals against average (0.21), save percentage (.988), win percentage (.964), and shutouts (11).

Number One Special Teams

Plattsburgh State leads the country in combined special teams as they have been successful on 81 of their 131 total attempts this season. The Cardinals have converted 17 of their 66 man-up situations into goals this season, ranking them sixth in the nation in power play efficiency (25.8 percent). Plattsburgh also leads the country in penalty kill percentage, only allowing one goal in 65 penalty kill opportunities (98.5 percent).

Title Defense

This is the third time in just 12 years of EC women’s ice hockey that the Purple and Gold will begin a season as the defending national champions. Despite losing some key pieces from last year’s team, the 2013-14 edition of EC women’s ice hockey has returned six of its top 10 scorers and is ready to bring another title back home. The Soaring Eagles successfully defended their first national championship, winning back-to-back titles in 2001-02 and 2002-03. EC became the first program to win NCAA Championships in each of their first two years of existence.
