First Empire 8 Conference Game of 2014-15

Friday night’s road trip to Ithaca College signifies the start of the Empire 8 Conference schedule for the Soaring Eagles. EC is 3-11 in their last 14 Empire 8 Conference openers, with losses in each of their last nine. Additionally, Elmira has won only one of the six road Empire 8 Conference opening games they have played since the 2000-01 season.

Home Opener

Saturday’s contest against St. John Fisher College marks the first home game of the 2014-15 season for the Elmira men. EC has had relative success in their home-opening games over the last 14 years, posting a 6-8 record. The Purple and Gold won their 2013-14 home opener, defeating Hilbert College, 74-64.

Washington and Lee University Tournament

EC went winless at the Washington and Lee University Tournament, falling to the tournament host, Washington and Lee, on the opening day of the tournament before losing in the third-place game to No. 13 nationally-ranked Centre College the following day.

All-Tournament Team

The Soaring Eagles were paced by Hayden Harkins ’18 at the Washington and Lee Tournament, leading to the newcomer being named to the All-Tournament team. Harkins averaged 13.0 points per game at the Washington and Lee Tournament and shot 58.3 percent (7-of12) from three-point range.

Career-High for Harkins

Newcomer Hayden Harkins ’18 had the best game of his young career against Washington and Lee University, scoring a team-high 17 points while knocking down his new single-game-high four three-pointers in the loss.

Elmira from Downtown

The Soaring Eagles continue to rank as one of the best three-point shooting teams in the Empire 8 Conference, leading the E8 in three-point baskets made per game and ranking second in three-point shooting percentage. EC is averaging 8.9 made three-pointers per game and is shooting at a 40.0 percent rate, just 0.6 percent behind conference leader Utica College.

EC’s Sharpshooters

The Purple and Gold have had much success from distance this season, leading to three players being ranked in the top-5 in the Empire 8 Conference in three-point shooting percentage and two ranked in the top-5 in three-pointers made per game. Justin Henderson ’16 leads the conference in three-point percentage at 54.1 percent and also ranks third in the E8 with 2.9 makes per game. Dibble’s New Role

Tyler Dibble ’15 embraced a different role in the two games at the Washington and Lee Tournament, helping facilitate the offense while Oladapo Badmos ’17 battled an injury. Dibble set a new career-high with five assists against Washington and Lee, then followed that up with four assists against No. 13 Centre College in the final game of the tournament.

All-Time vs. Ithaca

EC and Ithaca have a long history, playing each other 59 times in the series history. The Bombers hold a 38-21 record in the series with the teams splitting the two-game season series in each of the last three seasons.

Scouting Ithaca

The Bombers enter Friday’s game with a 2-6 overall record after suffering a home loss, their third of the season, to Hamilton College on December 30th. The Bombers have three players averaging double figures, with Keefe Gitto leading the way with 14.9 points per game. Gitto also leads Ithaca in rebounding at 9.0 rebounds per game. Gitto ranks sixth in the Empire 8 in points per game and fourth in rebounding per game.

All-Time vs. St. John Fisher

EC and St. John Fisher have been familiar foes throughout each program’s history, meeting a total of 64 times prior to today’s contest. The Cardinals hold a significant advantage in the series, winning 50 of the 64 contests.

Scouting the Cardinals

St. John Fisher enters the weekend on a five-game winning streak that has pushed their overall record to 7-2. The Cardinals are led by sophomore standout Keegan Ryan, who ranks third in the E8 in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 17.3 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Chaz Lott has played as one of the best point guards in the conference this season, leading the Empire 8 with 5.5 assists per game.
