Aswiththepreviouseditions,wehavetriedtointegratethebestofsciencewith thebestofpractice.Necessarily,psychologicalassessmentinvolvestechnicalknowledge.Butinpresentingthistechnicalknowledge,wehavetriedtoisolate,extract,and summarizeinasclearamanneraspossiblethecoreinformationthatisrequiredfor practitionerstofunctioncompetently.Atthesametime,assessmentisalsoaboutthe veryhumansideofunderstanding,helping,andmakingdecisionsaboutpeople.We hopewehavebeenabletocomfortablyblendthistechnical(science)sidewiththe human.Anassessmentthatdoesnothaveatleastsomehearttoitiscoldandfalls shortinunderstandingtheexperienceoftheclient.Tokeepintouchwiththepractitioner/humansideofassessment,wehavecontinuallymaintainedactiveassessment practicesinwhichwehavetriedtostayclosetoandinteractwiththeongoingpersonalandprofessionalchallengesofpractitioners.Wehopethatwithinandbetween thesentencesinthebook,ouractiveinvolvementwiththeworldofpracticeisapparent.
Ithasbeensevenyearssincetheprevious(fifth)editionwaspublished.Duringthat time,muchhaschangedbutmuchhasremainedthesame.Thebigteststhatprofessionalpsychologistsusemostfrequentlyaresomewhatdifferent,andthisisreflected inchangestothissixthedition.ThisincludeseliminatingthechapterontheCalifornia PsychologicalInventoryandreplacingitwiththemorewidelyusedNEOPersonality Inventory—3.Whilebothfocusonnormalpersonalitytraits,theNEOisbasedonthe stronglyempiricallysupportedfive-factormodelofpersonality.Additionally,thiseditionhaseliminatedthechapterontheThematicApperceptionTest.Althoughitsuse inclinicalpracticeisunclear(anecdotallyitseemsstilltoberelativelywidelyused), thetestitselfhassufferedfromthelackofconsensusonacodingandscoringprotocol andasubsequentlackofstrong,consistentempiricalsupport.Inplaceofthischapter, wehaveincludedachapteronthePersonalityAssessmentInventory,whichhasgained bothstrongempiricalsupportandwideclinicalpopularity.
Inadditiontothesemajorchangesintestscovered,thereareimportantchanges withinotherchapters.ThechapterontheWechslerIntelligenceScalesincludes
updatedinformationonthenewlydevelopedWechslerIntelligenceScaleforChildren, FifthEdition(WISC-V).Additionally,twochaptershavebeensignificantlyexpanded becauseeachtesthastwoalternateforms,bothofwhichcurrentlyareinwide use.Specifically,thechapterontheMinnesotaMultiphasicPersonalityInventory includesinformationonboththeMMPI-2andtheMMPI-2–RestructuredForm (MMPI-2-RF),andthechapterontheRorschachincludesinformationonboththe ComprehensiveSystemandtheRorschachPerformanceAssessmentSystem(R-PAS). Forbothofthesetests,thenext10orsoyearsmayseethefieldleantowardoneor theotherformofthetests,butatthemomentthefieldissplit,andbothversionsof bothtestsarewidelyused.Finally,wehaveworkedtostrengthenthesectionson“Use withDiverseGroups,”whichreflectthemoreextensiveuseofassessmentforawide varietyofpopulationsandtheimportanceofcompetentlyandsensitivelyworking withdiversepopulations.
Therearealsomanysmallerchangesthroughoutthissixthedition.Ithasbeen fullyupdatedwithnewresearchinthefield.Therehasalsobeengreateremphasison makingassessmentmoreuserfriendlyandconsumeroriented.Thisisreflectedinsuggestionsforusingeverydaylanguageinreports,connectinginterpretationstoactual clientbehavior,strategiesforwordinginterpretationsinamannerlikelytoenhance clientgrowth,andtheimportanceofcollaboratingwithclients.Thetreatmentplanning andclinicaldecisionmakingchapterhasbeencompletelyupdated,andthepsychologicalreportwritingchapterhasbeenupdatedtoincludecurrentthinkingofthe AmericanPsychologicalAssociationandtheSocietyforPersonalityAssessmentabout proficiencyinpersonalityassessment.Wehopethatthesechangeswillprovidereaders withthebest,mostcurrent,andmostpracticalofwhatcanbeavailableinassessment.
