Why Virtual?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the safety of our participants, we are hosting the 24th Annual Kids Are Worth It!® Conference virtually. The conference will take place September 1st-24th. We are offering a minimum of 14 workshops, two keynote sessions, a fireside chat and the opportunity to network with exhibitors.

This is the same Kids Are Worth It!® Conference you have come to know and love, just from the comfort of your own home or office! Join us as we delve into a variety of hot topics such as implicit bias, Adverse Childhood Experiences, mental health, child sexual abuse prevention and more. We look forward to seeing you on screen throughout the month of September as we learn from professionals and experts across the field of prevention. After all, kids are worth it!

How will the virtual format work?

Throughout September, two workshops will be offered on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. (ET) and Thursdays from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. (ET). Each one hour workshop will also include an additional ten minutes for participants to ask questions. You may register for each workshop or the fireside chat at a rate of $20 or a full conference registration for $100 and have the option to choose up to seven workshop selections throughout the month. Pre-registration is required. There will be no refunds issued for cancellations received after August 26, 2020. Please refer to our cancellation guidelines listed on page 15. You may register for each workshop/event up to one week prior to the scheduled event, but no refunds will be issued after August 26th. After you complete the registration process, you will receive a confirmation email with your selections. Several days prior to each virtual event you will receive an email with the ZOOM link and password required to enter your workshop, keynote or fireside chat. These emails may go to your “junk” or “clutter” folders. Please check those folders to ensure you receive your links. #KAWI2020

Keynote: “Beyond ACEs: Implications for Prevention” Dr. Melissa Merrick Melissa T. Merrick is President and CEO of Prevent Child Abuse America, the nation’s oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to the primary prevention of child abuse and neglect. She has nearly 20 years of clinical, research, and leadership experience related to the etiology, course, and prevention of child abuse and neglect. In partnership with the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Child Abuse and Neglect, she served as the lead scientist for the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) study at the CDC for eight years. Dr. Merrick has doctoral degrees in clinical psychology where she served as a program coordinator for the San Diego site of the Longitudinal Studies on Child Abuse and Neglect consortium.

Keynote: “Federal Prevention Priorities” Associate Commissioner Jerry Milner Jerry Milner is the Associate Commissioner at the US Health and Human Services Children’s Bureau. He has worked in child welfare at county, state and federal levels, and in the private sector for over 40 years. Prior to returning to the Administration for Children, Youth and Families, he served as the Vice President for Child Welfare Practice at the Center for the Support of Families, where he assisted state and local child welfare agencies in evaluating their child welfare programs, and designed and implemented improvements in practice, policy and procedures. Jerry was also the state child welfare director in Alabama. He worked previously in the Children’s Bureau to implement and manage the Child and Family Service Reviews of state child welfare services programs. #KAWI2020

David Cozart David Cozart is the Director of the Lexington Leadership Foundation’s Fatherhood Initiative. He has provided leadership and coordination of activities and programs aimed at the restoration of the institution of fatherhood and raising awareness of the challenges related to father absence. Boys and Men of Color are at the forefront of his approach. He is engaged in efforts to establish a statewide fatherhood consortium for Kentucky, and serves as President of the Commonwealth Center for Fathers and Families. With nearly 25 years’ experience as a human service provider, community organizer, faith-based leader, consultant, and father/family advocate, David is a frequent presenter at local, state, and national conferences. His national certification in community organizing affords him the opportunity to coach and lead in development of grassroots organizations and promote collaborations that increase the capacity for service delivery to families.

David always carries this message through the lenses of collective impact, group velocity, targeted universalism, and faith. David has earned a B.A. in Psychology/Sociology and a Masters in Theology from Campbellsville University. He is husband to Nekesha; father to Zachary, Destiny, and Dalen; and servant to many others.

Dr. Roger Cleveland

For over a decade, Dr. Roger Cleveland has been “at the forefront of equity and inclusion.” He was inducted into the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame in 2014, received the P.G. Peeples Equity and Excellence Achievement Award from the Fayette County Equity Council for his work in improving local schools in 2013. He was also honored by the Kentucky Association of Blacks in Higher Education as Professor of the Year and recognized as “Teachers Making a Difference at Eastern Kentucky University” in 2012. As an advocate in education for equity and inclusion, the Kentucky native also served two terms on the Commonwealth’s School Curriculum, Assessment and Accountability Council, and was appointed by Mayor Jim Gray to the Lexington-Urban County Human Rights Commission in 2013. He is currently a professor in the School of Education at Kentucky State University and serves as the Director for the Center for Research in the Eradication of Educational Disparities (CREED), as well as the president and owner of Millennium Learning Concepts Consulting Company. #KAWI2020

Join the newly appointed Commissioner of the Department for Community Based Services (DCBS), Marta Miranda-Straub as she holds a fireside chat with partners from throughout the state. The fireside chat will provide an informal setting to learn more about the Commissioner’s goals and priorities for DCBS. Pull up a chair, grab a snack, snuggle with your pet, and be prepared to be engaged in a conversation which will provide the impetus for further partner dialogue in the months to come. The Commissioner wants to hear from you too, so be prepared to give a“shout-out” to your agency. Most all conference participants interact in some way with DCBS, so the fireside chat is a perfect way to ensure you stay informed of current and future DCBS priorities.

Commissioner Marta Miranda-Straub

Commissioner Marta Miranda-Straub began her appointment to DCBS on July 1, 2020. She brings 47 years’ of clinical and organizational social work practice experience – at multiple levels – to this leadership position. Miranda-Straub has served families and children through trauma, substance use disorder, mental health, intimate partner violence/sexual assault intervention. Her advocacy and activism has focused on social and economic justice for disinvested and marginalized populations. She has a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology and Sociology, a master’s degree in Clinical and Organizational Social Work and a PhD in Honorary-Public Service.

This presentation will describe Kentucky Court of Justice’s efforts through the RESTORE Initiative to reduce the stigma of addiction for justice-involved individuals with a substance use disorder, improve the practice of court personnel, facilitate access to effective treatment, and promote a family-centered approach. Strategies for family preservation in the context of a substance use disorder, the need to for early intervention for children, key warning signs for youth substance use, and current family recovery models in Kentucky will be discussed.

What a great opportunity to hear from the lead author of the most recent ACEs report, Vital Signs: ACEs and the Implications for Prevention, from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. From the pandemic to racial inequalities, we are at a critical time in our understanding of ACEs as we must pivot to understanding the implications of ACEs on our prevention work. While our goal is to strengthen families two or three generations at a time, how we use the knowledge and information gleaned from our work with ACEs will be instrumental in catching families “upstream.” Dr. Merrick is a respected epidemiologist who has spent decades researching child abuse and neglect, and we promise, she’ll make the research interesting and applicable to all of us.

C1. Beyond the ACE Score: Resilience and Engaging Families Christa Bell, MSW

Much attention has been given to the ACE Study over the past decade, but the resilience questionnaire is discussed much less. This workshop emphasizes the importance of a balanced assessment that includes examination of childhood trauma as well as measures of resilience, protective capacity, and protective factors. This will include a discussion of Department for Community Based Services efforts to better assess and engage families, including a shift toward differential response. #KAWI2020

C2. Preventing Out-of-Home Placements for At-Risk Youth Ashley Clark & J.R. Hopson

Effective diversion programs reduce recidivism, avoid labeling effects, decrease system costs and limit unnecessary social control. Kentucky’s Court Designated Worker (CDW) Program hinges on the use of community-based services to facilitate early intervention, hold youth accountable, maintain public safety, and achieve better outcomes for youth and their families. This session will outline how utilizing positive interaction, strength-based approaches and community-based interventions can prevent out-of-home placements for at-risk youth in the Commonwealth.

E2. Supporting Parents with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities to Prevent Child Neglect Dr. Anita Barbee

This session discusses the difficult but necessary topic of supporting parents with intellectual or developmental disabilities (ID/DD) to prevent child neglect and other forms of child maltreatment. For those individuals with ID/DD without a strong social support network, very often there are struggles in navigating romantic relationships and parenting safely (for everyone involved, the person with ID/ DD and any children that may come from pairings). Fortunately, there are strategies that can be put in place and programs that parents with ID/DD can access to facilitate healthy relationship, parenting and protective skills. These strategies and best practice will be covered in the workshop along with how the community can mobilize to prevent these families from falling through the cracks.

Training participants will review updated statistics and will understand the range of outcomes for victims of Abusive Head Trauma, and discuss risk factors and prevention. F2. Understanding Healthy Child Development as a Tool to Prevent Child Sexual Abuse Janna Estep Jordan, MSW

Understanding typical child sexual development is critical to keeping children safe. Often parents do not understand when and how to discuss sexual abuse. What is the cancellation policy?

2020 Kids Are Worth It! (R) Conference Cancellation Policy: Conference registration may be cancelled by submitting a request in writing by August 26, 2020. Written requests may be submitted by emailing pcaky@pcaky.org. Refunds, minus a processing fee totaling 12% of your invoice total will be issued ONLY for written cancellations received by August, 26 2020.

PLEASE NOTE: *Telephone and verbal cancellations will not be accepted. *PCAK is not responsible for cancellation requests not received. *REFUND REQUESTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE POSTED DATE. *NO-SHOWS WILL BE INVOICED - NO EXCEPTIONS. In lieu of canceling, you may transfer your registration to another person without penalty. Please allow 6-8 weeks for processing of any approved refunds. PCAK shall assume no liability whatsoever in the event this conference is cancelled, rescheduled or postponed due to a fortuitous event, Act of God, unforeseen occurrence or any other event that renders performance of this conference impracticable, illegal or impossible. For purposes of this clause, a fortuitous event shall include, but not be limited to: war, fire, labor strike, extreme weather or other emergency. How do I obtain CEU’s or receive a certificate of completion for the workshops I attend?

When you register, we will ask what CEU or type of training certificate you need.

If you are required to submit a license number, please do so upon initial registration. Workshops are one hour in length, therefore in order for us to verify your attendance, you must be present for 80% of the workshop. Once you sign into the ZOOM workshop, your time will be recorded. It is important you ensure your name is associated with your ZOOM account. Certificates will be distributed by mid-October via the email you provided during the registration process. Evaluations are not only critical to quality improvements but are required by continuing education providers. At the conclusion of each workshop, a link to survey monkey will be emailed to your email. The survey monkey link will also be displayed in the ZOOM chat box. DCBS/TRIS: Participants will receive training credit for sessions attended. Participants can receive up to 12.5 hours of training credit.

ECE TRAINING CLOCK HOURS: ECE continuing education credit is approved for 12.5 clock hours of training. Participants must attend at least 80% of the workshop. All A1 workshops qualify for ECE-TRIS credit except workshop A1.

GUIDANCE COUNSELORS/TEACHERS/SCHOOL PROFESSIONALS: This conference is listed on the Professional Development Bulletin Board for teachers and educators and is approved for 12.5 hours credit.

EDUCATION/INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP HOURS: According to 704 KAR 3:325 Section 3 (2)(a) “An instructional leader may count attendance at education conferences up to six (6) hours of credit each school year.”

FAMILY RESOURCE AND YOUTH SERVICES CENTER STAFF: This conference is approved for up to 12.0 Professional Development hours for Family Resource and Youth Service Center Staff. Approval code is 0502021.

SOCIAL WORK: This conference is approved for up to 12.5 CE credits through the Kentucky Board of Social Work. PCAK is approved by the Kentucky Board of Social Work to sponsor continuing education for credential holders (KBSWSP 2020009). PCAK maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Participants must be present 80% of the workshop and complete a workshop evaluation to verify attendance.

PSYCHOLOGY: CEUs are pending approval.

There is no known commercial support for this program or presenters. Additionally, there are no known conflicts of interest. Each presenter is responsible for the content of their individual presentation.

How will virtual exhibits work?

All participants will have the opportunity to attend virtual exhibits. Exhibitors will be available to provide an overview of their programs, services and resources. Time will be allotted for questions.

Two exhibitors will be featured every Tuesday in September from 9:15 a.m. ET to 9:45 a.m. ET and every Thursday from 12:45 p.m. ET to 1:15 p.m. ET. Links to connect to exhibitors will be emailed in advance of the Conference.
