Paddlers by the hundreds heading for Coast • BY JACK INCE

HUNDREDS of paddlers are expected to converge on Yeppoon today for round eight of the Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association's northern zone grand prix series tomorrow. At least 400 paddlers, and perhaps as many friends and support crew, will arri ve in town in what should be a boon weekend for accommodation. food and entertainment outlets. Crews from Rockhampton, Mackay, Slade Point, Hay Point. the Whitsundays. Hamilton Island. Townsville and Cannonvale will enter at least 35 teams in the event. A series of races will be held off Yeppoon's Main Beach throughout Saturday. starting at 7am and ending in mid-afternoon. The grand prix series will be part of a busy Tropical Pine-Fest opening this weekend. The outrigging carnival will include marathon events, featuring gruelling long distance racing in the morning and casual mini-marathons of mixed crews in the afternoon. The Capricorn Coast Outrigger Canoe Club has an unassailable lead in the series having won seven of this season's fast eight regattas. Events will include Open Men and Women crews and Master and Master Women crews. Crews to have nominated by Wednesday morning were Rockhampton, Sunset Bay. Mackay, Slade Point, Hay Point. Whitsunday. Malahini. Hamilton Island, Townsville and Capricorn Coast. Organisers were hoping for more late inclusions but the far north clubs of Port Douglas, Cairns and Mission Beach have not nominated. Publicity officer Gary Palmer said the regatta was going to be a big weekend for Yeppoon and the Coast with many accommodation centres getting heavy bookings. "We could reasonably expect 300 to 400 paddlers and an all-up total of between 700 and 800 visitors here for the regatta." he said. "The marathon races are extremely hard for competitors but from Main Beach to Wreck Point, it should be good spectator value." The Capricorn Coast Outrigger Canoe Club is one of the real success stories in sporting clubs on the Coast. It formed with only one canoe and six men paddlers in 1988 and now has seven boats and more than 100 competitors. Tomorrow's programme features 14km Master Women. Master Men and Open Women races and the tough 211cm event for • . n Men.

Wildin not w p iovror ede at tn • BY JACK INCE LIVINGSTONE Shire Council chairman Cr Barbara Wildin has dismissed reports that Pivot Mining can start exploration of Shoalwater Bay "at any time now" as mis-information. Cr Wildin said on Wednesday night the report proves people involved in the decision making of the sand-mining issue do not know the facts. "The report simply cannot be true. Pivot cannot start any exploration as the Department of Minerals and Energy have rejected all but one aspect of any exploration," she said. Cr Wildin said she did not believe the press release, from a Queensland Liberal Senator, and was dubious of its intentions. Shire engineer Mike Paine, who has been given the job of investigating the Shoalwater Bay sandmining issue and its effects, said the Minerals and Energy Department and the Commonwealth Environment Protection Agency would not allow any-
