FARMER TIRED OF STOP-GAP REPAIRS TO BYFIELD ROAD A B YFIELD farmerconcemed abou t the danger and cost to users of the Byfield Road wants the State Government to develop permanent improvements.

Adrian Evans, who has lived in Byfield since 1976, is tired of "stop-gap" roadworks which don't last more than two months.

He said a number of old, timber culverts were starting to collapse beneath the road and the washout on some had made it impossibl e for two vehicles to pass.

He has written to Member for Keppel Vince Lester asking the government for a commitment to seal a certain amount of the road every year.

"There have been several accidents in the past few months because of cars being thrown side-ways out of pot-holes and the possibility of someone being killed is increasing every day," MrEvans said.

"There are five or six very old, pre-concrete age culverts which are an accident waiting to happen.

"People who do not know the road would not be aware of the narrow gap between guide-posts and the wash-out or the fact that two vehicles can't cross some of the culverts at the same time.

"I've seen many attempts to u pgrade the road but two months later it needs to be redone.

"The Department of Transport and Livingstone Shire Council seem to pass the blame backwards and forwards to each other.

"It's never done properly. Either funds run out or there wasn't enough money to begin with," he said.

Evans said there were 2(X) to 3(X) permanent residents al on g Bytield Road. 50 c hildren at Byfield State School and a daily school bus into Yeppoon.

"However the real problem is not the local traffic but the heavy weekend and tourist flow.

"The Transport Department claims the traffic is not heavy enough for any major works but they take their counts on weekdays.

"They sit on a comer from 9am to 4pm during the work week and make decisions.

"The traffic here on weekends is much busier with tourists heading for Five Rocks, Stockyard Point, Stoney Creek, Red Rock and a number of private tourist attractions up here.

"The Forestry Department is doing its share to attract tourists but is not involved in road maintenance.

Call to State Govt to seal a section a year "The Army has also been known to use the road on occasions.

"The culverts and pot-holes are a danger to life; are surely proving very costly to vehicles in wear and tear, and cause damage during transport to the tropical fruit crops grown around Byfield."

He said the area was no longer an isolated little community with business and tourism n ow moving in.

"There has to be co-operation between all users of the road and we just might start to see a pennanent improvement."

In response, Mr Lester has asked Transport Minister David Hamill to urgently allocate funding to allow sealing of at least four kilometres of the Byfield Road every year.

He said under current conditions, taxpayers were already paying a large bill on the road because of the constant need to grade it after rain.

"The road is basically used by many people who do not live within the Livingstone Shire Council so it is unfair to ask council to allocate funding as part of its priority programme.

"At Easter, alone, some 50(X) vehicles passed to and from Bytield and the surrounding area," Mr Lester said.

"Byfield has wonderful attractions, some becoming internationally known, but tourists shriek with horror when they hit the gravel section of the mad."

Mr Lester said he had been inundated with complaints from residents and some school bus operators who were saying the road was dangerous.

"It irks me to think millions of dollars is being poured into the South-East Queensland corner with talk of yet another highway from Brisbane to the Gold Coast but funding for Byfield, which has great potential, gets forgotten."

Tanzer: motorists endangering lives at pedestrian crossings MOTORISTS endanger lives when they disregard pedestrian crossing laws; and they can be fined $130 and lose points off their licence for the offence.

Yeppoon Police are cracking down on motorists who disregard crossing laws after a number of complaints from pedestrians who had to avoid cars while crossing roads.

Yeppoon Police station officer-in-charge Sgt Ken Tanzer wants pedestrians to take down number plate and vehicle details so police can take the appropriate action.

"The law says the driver shall give way to any pedestrian on a pedestrian croSsing," he said.

"That means once a person's foot touches the crossing all cars must give way to the pedestrian.

"There are a lot of problems with people not taking enough care when driving and a few near misses have occurred because vehicles were going too fast.

"Motorists should think a bit more and slow down when coming up to a crossing in case somebody steps out." he said.

Sgt Tanzer said the station had received complaints of motorists disregarding the laws and driving through crossings when people were on them.

"We have also had some people having to avoid cars on the crossings," he said.

It had taken long enough to make pedestrians realise crossings were safer and now motorists were making them unsafe.

"These motorists are putting the lives of all the people around them in danger," Sgt Tanzer said.

He was also aware some pedestrians were "playing" on crossings.

"If any drivers see pedestrians misusing the crossings and playing on them they can also contact us.

"We will be keeping an eye on both pedestrians and motorists."

Mother fears kindy accident YEPPOON kindergarten mother Judy Watson wants traffic slowed and parking re-arranged at the John Street entrance to the centre before a serious accident occurs.

She has decided to start a petition asking Livingstone Shire Council to reduce the risk of someone being hurt by erecting signs reducing the 60km/h speed limit to 40km/h and to rearrange parking where cars are standing on both sides of the divided road.

"In the past two weeks I have seen two close calls involving cats trying to pull out onto the road," Mrs Watson said.

"Cars come flying over the hill too quickly and the person cannot see anything until the vehicle is upon them.

"The on-coming car doesn't have anywhere to go either because vehicles are on both sides.

"There's going to bean accident there very soon if changes are not made."

Mrs Watson is planning to distribute the petition forms to the kindergarten, pre-schools, schools and the Wesleyan Hall, opposite the kindergarten.

DENT Council offers industrial land sites for tender

LIVINGSTONE Shire Council has called for expressions of interest from individuals or firms interested in establishing businesses on its proposed industrial site on the Rockhampton Road.

Shire clerk Jim Brown said council intended to establish the estate to cater for light and medium industry later in the year providing re-zoning can be realised by September.

The site, between Millroy Drive an d the Yeppoon refuse tip access, will have all service infrastructure installed. ' Mr B rown said council was seeking expressions of interest from any persons/firms who may want to use the site.

He also said details of leasing, purchase and development options and conditions were available from the council offices.

"Once the level of interest and specific site requirements have been assessed it is proposed to call tenders for sites and enter into contracts with future tenants," he said.

A 21-YEAR-OLD Yeppoon woman has just received news of her acceptance into Canberra's Royal Military College, Duntroon.

Psychology student and part-time Army reservist Shame Black was delighted with the news this week and is looking forward to her 18-month stint at the National capital's officer training school.

She will emerge from the course as an Army Lieutenant although she expects it will be fairly hard-going.

"I think they will really put it to me and test for weaknesses," Miss Black said.

"They will also of course try to develop my leadership skills as much as possible."

She is one of the few women accepted into the July intake which will begin training for 70 officer hopefuls.

The se lectec170 were c hosen from an Australianwide process which culminated in a full militaryboard interview in Brisbane.

"The table was full of Colonels and Generals but it went well and I'm really happy to have been chosen," she said.

"I've always liked the idea of the military and for the past two years have been in the Reserves.

"I'm in my final year of a psychology course at university but will not get a chance to finish it at the moment.

"After the Duntroon training, there's a good chance the Army will help me get through and complete it."

Shame Black will be busy this month preparing for the big move.

Her brother James. 8, wants to follow big sister' s footsteps into the Army.

TWO Capricorn Coast schools were broken into on the weekend.

About $30 was stolen from Yeppoon Primary school when thieves forced louvres to enter a classroom. There was no other damage.

Emu Park Primary School was broken into between Friday and Saturday nights. The door to a classroom was jemmied open and the handle broken.

Principal Dennis Wex said there was no evidence to show the thieves entered the room.

"They might have made a lot of noise opening the door and fled," he said. "We were lucky it didn't go any further."

There was no vandalism apart from the broken door handle.

In another, attempted robbery, Yeppoon United Soccer Club's clubhouse was broken into for the second time.

The first time the shed was empty and this time club president Trevor Boon thinks nothing was stolen.

The break-in will cost the club about $300 for a new door because it was knocked off its hinges.

"It was a hardwood door and we're surprised they knocked it down," he said' "We don't think anything was stolen.

"We don't keep anything that would be a drawcard such as cigarettes. alcohol or money. so we don't know what they could have been after."

Yeppoon and Emu Park Police reported a quiet weekend.

Yeppoon and Emu Park fire brigades and Yeppoon Ambulance also had a quiet week.

Strong wind warnings for the past few weeks have stopped many people going boating, Yeppoon Coastguard said this week.

A spokesperson said wind gusts were reported as high as 25 knots over the weekend.

Shoalwater Bay Inquiry could hold one meeting in Yeppoon

Birthday fete YEPPOON High School will celebrate its 35th anniversary with a fete, past student registration, car-boot sale and football match on Saturday, July 17.

All past students, teachers and parents are invited to attend the celebrations which will end with a supper-dance at the school in the evening.

Fund-raising committee member Denise Goodwin said many students had passed through the school since that time and any old photographs or memorabilia would be welcome.

"If former students or teachers cannot attend the celebrations but would like to contact former class-mates they may send notes which will be placed on display," she said.

THE Shoalwater Bay Inquiry's interim secretariat is considering altering its planned Central Queensland meetings in Rockhampton and include at least one meeting on the Capricorn Coast.

The possible change will come as welcome news to conservationists who were disappointed the Coast was not originally getting a local hearing.

Secretariat spokesperson Cathe Crisp said from Canberra this week the group was considering the possibility of either creating an extra meeting for Yeppoon transferring one of the scheduled Rockhampton meetings.

The possibility of the Yeppoon meeting should be known next week.

Crisp said the secretariat had only just started considering the possibility of a Coast meeting and she did not know whether it would be an information session or hearing.

"We should know the decision next week and are planning to be in Queensland at the end of June or early July," she said.

Conservationist Pat O'Brien was concerned the original itinery included only meetings in Canberra, where the secretariat is now, Brisbane and Rockhampton.

A number of environment groups and the Livingstone Shire Council wrote to the Shoalwater Bay commission group asking it to hold sessions in Yeppoon.

O'Brien said council, the Wildlife Preservation Society, the Byfield Action Group and the Queensland Commercial Fishing Organisation, had asked for some meetings be changed to Yeppoon.

The secretariat has just begun its sand-mining investigations in Canberra and will move to Brisbane where two of its members live.

O'Brien said the commission was asking for registrations of interest in the inquiry process.

The commission is hoping interested parties will attend as many of the hearings as possible.

0' Brien said he felt the decision to hold all the Central Queensland meetings in Rockhampton was unfair on Coastal residents.

"It's a 160km round trip from Byfield to Rocky and many elderly or people with young families would have difficulty attending." he said.

"They seem to think Rockhampton is the region's centre but it would be better in Yeppoon because Coastal residents would have more input.

"We must tell sand-mining concerns to go away from the Shoalwater Bay area and n ever c ome back.

"The final decision the commission makes will

be the recommendation to government, so it's vital to get our point across."

Representing the Wildlife Preservation Society, O'Brien said his group had approached scientists, museums, conservation groups and many other organisations involved with similar projects.

"We are hoping to get submissions from as many experts as possible on the sand-mining issue in time for the Central Queensland hearings," he said.

"It's also important that everything to do with the issue is kept open and in full view of the public.

"We must not allow vested interests to close any doors and sabotage the inquiry."

No date has been set for the first public session.

The inquiry was announced in the Prime Minister's Environment Statement in December and has 12 months to conduct hearings and report back to the government by May 10, 1994.

It is being undertaken through the Environment Protection (Impact of Proposals) Act Environment Minister Ros Kelly said the commission would provide advice to assist decisions on future land use and management under the lands and waters in the Shoalwater Bay area, consistent with the principles of ecologically sustainable development.

"The inquiry has been given wide-ranging terms of reference including natural, cultural and Aboriginal heritage, scientific significance, mining and mineral processing, fishing, tourism, freshwater supply, impact on the Great Barrier Reef -and. importantly, military and defence requirements." the Minister said.

MARYVALE Rural Fire Brigade members are digging deep to complete the purchase of the most recent addition to their tire fighting equipment.

The brigade applied 18 months ago to purchase an ex-forestry unit when one became available.

Last week brigade warden Cyril Hiette was handed the keys of a 1990 Landcruiser utility by Queensland Fire Service Rural Fires division diStrict inspector Fred Collins.

The unit is equipped with a water tank, pump, hoses and reel and provision for storing knapsacks, firelighters and other items to effectively fight fires.

Mr Hiette (on behalf of the brigade) thanked Mr Collins for his advice and asistance in obtaining the vehicle.

"Members who have been approached so far for their annual subscription have dug deep and in many cases have paid up to three times the normal amount," Mr Hiette said.

"All could see the enormous benefit such a, unit will be to our area when combating the ever present risk of fire.

"I thank the members who have contributed and urge those who have not subscribed so far to contact treasurer Shaeleen Gill, PO Box 410, Yeppoon or phone 39 7918.

"The brigade also thanks the Yeppoon Community Markets for their generous donation of $500 towards the purchase of the unit," he said

THE drowning occurred recently of Gordon McDougall, 58 years, when he fell from his trawler 'Marie R' at Innisfail.

Gordon was the youngest of the Emu Park pioneer family -_the McDougalls - who arrived before the turn of the century.

He served his time and became a boilermaker in the Rockhampton Railway Workshops. He later started oystering in Keppel Bay and then prawning at the mouth of the Fitzroy River and then along the Queensland coast from Bundaberg to the Gulf.

His father, James, and his grandfather James before him, fished and oystered in Keppel Bay holding the leases of Pelican Peak and Divided Islands.

Grandfather James also grazed sheep on Humpy Island and grew pineapples on Wedge Island.

Mrs Win Nelson, formerly Winifred McDougall, only daughter and youngest child of James and Harriet McDougall senior and aunt of Gordon McDougall resides in Emu Park.

Gordon's eldest brother Ron and wife Joan of Emu Park fished and oystered and then owned and operated 'Oceanus' the tourist boat to Gt Keppel Island for many years.

Brother Keith of Emu Park worked a trawler `Addie May' out of Townsville.

Gordon's two surviving sisters are Mrs Matt Horan (Joan), Southport, and Mrs Kim Svendsen (Ruth) of Emu Park.

The moon, in June, in LATE LUNCH DELAYS BUNCH eclipse over Yeppoon SEVEN councillors had a late lunch during their monthly meeting, putting council 20 minutes behind schedule.

One of the five punctual councillors suggested they continue without the others ... but

• BY RHEIT WATSON TONIGHT (Friday) is the last chance this century to see a "perfect" total eclipse of the moon.

The actual eclipse will occur at 9.11pm with totality between 10.12pm and 11.49pm. The eclipse ends at 12.50am.

According to an expert. this will be the last chance for Capricorn Coast people to see a good (or, as he said, "perfect") lunar eclipse (weather permitting).

There are roughly three every two years but they generally occur during sunrise or sunset where the viewer can only see half of it or, as with one in December, they appear during daylight when they can't be seen at all.

Sydney Observatory education officer Rod Somerville said if people miss out on this eclipse they'll have to wait until July 16 in the year 2000 to see one as good.

"This eclipse is a good one because the moon will be nice and high in the sky and we'll be able to watch the Earth's shadow going across the moon," he said.

"What happens in a lunar eclipse is the Earth is directly between the sun and the moon, throwing the Earth's shadow across the moon.

"It can be seen without visual aids, such as binoculars or telescopes. but it will be interest* Jo watch the shadow going over the craters on the moon.

- "To see this you will need binoculars," Mr Somerville said. "Centuries ago when people thought the Earth was flat a few Greeks saw the lunar eclipse and said it proved the Earth was round ... but I guess they were shouted down by everyone else."

During a lunar eclipse there is often a redishrusty colour because some light sneaks around the Earth and falls onto the moon.

The dustfrom the Mt Pinatubo eruption in the Philippines may have provided Australia with spectacular sunsets but it also stopped the light from hitting the moon during the previous eclipse.

"The previous eclipse was quite dark because there was a lot of dust in the air from the eruption," he said.

The next lunar eclipse will be on September 17. 1997. but we will only be able to see half of it.

The next total solar eclipse will be on December 4, 2002.

The next total annular eclipse will be on February 16. 1999. An annular eclipse is like a solar eclipse (where the moon goes between the sun and the Earth) but with an annular eclipse the moon is farther away and is smaller than the sun, leaving a bright ring of light around the moon.

If the weather is right, tonight's sky show will definitely eclipse anything on television!

Town Hall alive with colour for Bannerfest YEPPOON Town Hall will he alive with the colour of pentacostal banners in a competition organised by the Anglican Church of Yeppoon on Saturday, June 5.

Many churches throughout the community have entered the Bannerfest, believed to be only the second of its type held in Queensland.

The first was held in Brisbane two years ago.

Entrants frornRockhampton, Gladstone and Gracemere have nominated for the event with the Uniting Church keen to defend the title won in Brisbane.

The Bannerfest will be judged by arch-deacon Philp and his wife.

An arts and crafts display including wood painting, pottery, embroidery and china painting will also be held.

THE 13th Annual Hobby Horse Derby was not favoured by great weather on Saturday, but still attracted a large crowd.

This annual event, conducted by the Keppel Coast Girl Guides, could be said to not only bring the best out in people, but also bring the best people out.

The day was a resounding success because of it.

The morning dawned grey and miserable, but could not deter the SES crew and the willing fathers who turned out to help with the set-up.

So badly do we need the rain, that no-one complained. Later in the morning, the showers simply drew people closer together under the tarps (where some got wetter). The 4R0 Big Band provided beautiful music to enjoy as the sun pelted down, and people waited, and smiled happily.

A HUGE day of entertainment was offered by Emu Park Pensioners League on Wednesday in the cultural hall. Visitors from Rockhampton enjoyed a full day, with the ever-popular cent sale being a competition to see who won the most prizes.

A lovely three course lunch followed and then the social entertainment began. Emu Park Evergreens opened with a medley of songs in a garden setting.

George and Maureen Turner were applauded for "If I Should Fall in Love" and "If I Give My Heart To You". Alf Marcombe followed with "Rambling Rose" among his medley. Doreen Svensen was a hit with "For Me and My Gal" and "I Wonder Who's Kissing Her Now".

Alwyn Middlebrook on guitar played country and western favourites and was given a good ovation. Marge Payne from Rocky was in fine voice with her bracket, then Carole and Ella from Emu Park, looked lovely and sang beautifully with "Secret Love" and "Unchained Melody".

Mrs Hall from Yeppoon took the stage for the lovely, "You Will Never Grow Old". "Cinderella Sweetheart" and "Baby Face" were the choice of Emu Park's Coral Hallam and she rendered them in good style. Tony Ceff on violin was magical with "Cherry Cherry Bin" among the songs in his medley.

Lydia Lavelle, Rocky's accompanist, sang and played for the haunting "Somewhere My Love". Joan Ware, Evergreen member, was well received for "Ain't Misbehavin" and "Pocketful of Dreams".

Betty Anderson, changed the tempo with the toe tapping "Cheating Heart" and other rock tunes. The theme was carried on by Jean and Harry Dendle swinging along to Blue Moon.

Norma Brinson was a lovely artist with "Memories" and "If I Loved You" and was given a loud ovation. The nostalgic "Danny Boy" and "Velia" were Phyl Thurlow's choice ... she is a true soprano and has a lovely voice.

Other performers were Jean Huntley, Eleanor Bramble, then Norm Lewis and George Turner, combined for a mouth organ duet, and a lively "Oh Susanna", "Wooden Heart" and "Click Go The Shears".

Stan Nelson and Ella Lewis, Emu Park's favourite duo, were romantic with "One Day When We Were Young" and "I Dream Of The Summertime".

Guests departed with thanks to Emu Park for a lovely day. Thank you: to the women who slaved all day in the kitchen; Stan Nelson who cooked the cakes and scones; and members who donated to the cent sale.

"Your efforts are much appreciated. Our reports are that everyone had a good day, Emu Park socials are very popular for their variety and good food," a spokesman said.

BIG PLANS FOR COAST RESORT A TRANSFORMATION is taking place at the Capricorn International Resort with plans for 24-hour room service, conference facilities improvements and $250,000 to be spent on operational equipment for the restaurants, kitchens and function rooms.

Resort public relations manager Jan Farquhar said proper staff training was rated highly in the plans for better service.

Many of the staff are Capricorn Coast residents and, at peak periods, the resort hires students from the University of Central Queensland.

As part of the resort's revamp the Billabong Restaurant will be extended to include a terrace

and the Lagoon Restaurant is expected to have an outdoor heating system to deal with the winter cold.

The Capricorn International Resort is preparing for even more conferences by building a new convention centre, with seating for 600 people, within the next two years.

They are also planning to spend $16,000 on updating and replacing conference audio-visual equipment.

The resort offers five main venues for conferences or special functions including the Japanese-style building, Anniversary House, which will update its look in the near future.

The resort is also offering new conference packages.

MULAMBIN BeachCamping Area manager David Sutcliffe told council during its monthly meeting that people would gladly pay more to camp there if better facilities were provided.

In his monthly report Mr Sutcliffe said he had some observations after being manager for 12 months.

"From March 1, 1992 to February 22, 1993 the takings were $65.715 (so far March 1993 was up 4.6 percent on March 1992 and April 1993 was up 15 percent on April 1992)." he said.

"At present there are four permanent and 20 unoccupied vans which are used on a frequent basis - the returns from these vans generate to council a minimum of $27,756 for a full year.

"The southern and northern end of the park are well maintained by permanent occupants regarding lawns watered and mowed, trees planted

"The indicators are that the winter months will have an increase of about 25 percent on last year's takings, going on phone calls and comments by travellers who stayed last year and have told friends about the fantastic camping at Mulambin Beach.

"The private camping and caravan parks are indicating boom winters months with Coolwaters nearly booked out having to turn many people away last year," he said.

"We seem to pick up the overflow from the four parks in the vicinity.

"I believe there is the need for a good camping facility such as Mulambin, and I mean camping, as there are enough caravan parks to cater for the travelling public."

Mr Sutcliffe suggested council either renovate the existing toilet and shower block or build a low budget combined shower/toilet block with a one off capital expenditure "that even on present takings could be paid for in two years".

"If better facilities were provided, nightly and weekly charges could also be increased and people would gladly pay them to camp on the beach," he said.

"I do not believe power facilities need to be offered in the camping grounds.

"I believe the council has an excellent facility to offer campers the opportunity to camp cheaply by modernising the facilities at Mulambin Beach."

Cr Lloyd Webber complimented Mr Sutcliffe on the report and said it needed a lot of consideration.

Also in the report Mr Sutcliffe said the camping area made $7844 last month.

"The men's urinal northern end is running continually; the top row of the rockblock wall in the ladies' toilet, opposite the shop, is unstable; the urinal in the men's toilet opposite the shop is leaking; the water inlet to the ladies' toilet at the southern end is leaking and more firewood is needed on a regular basis," he said.

Council said they were looking into the problems.

YEPPOON Main Beach's old rotundas have been replaced with new, improved ones.

Shire engineer Pat Murphy said the old rotundas were beyond their "use-by date".

The old rotundas were pulled down and replaced with new ones made of treated timber.

"It was costing too much to maintain the old ones and in the long run it was better to build new ones," he said.

Mr Murphy said a couple of the rotundas may be combined.

TOMORROW, Saturday, is World Environment Day and Yeppoon State Primary School has organised a full programme of displays and activities.

Events have been arranged throughout Queensland to mark the occasion.

Yeppoon Primary's environmental fair will be held from 10am to 2pm at the school and will include a display on making a solar hot-water system from recycled copper.

Other displays with an environment theme will be presented by the Department of Environ ment and Heritage, Livingstone Shire Council, the Shell Club, Yeppoon State High School Agricultural Department, the Wildlife Preservation Society. the Conservation Council and Saltwatch.

Students will run guided tours through the school's environment trail.

The environmental mural made by the students and assisted by Dieter Irving and Linda Sykes, will be unveiled on the day by Coast artist Marie Bayliss.

A presentation by Aboriginal dancers, the B arambah Connection from Waraburra State School, will be held at 12.30pm.

The Byfield State School rock 'n' roll band and the Yeppoon State School choir, band, orchestra and recorder band will provide music.

The Yeppoon Gymnastics Club will also provide entertainment.

A variety of stalls including cakes and lollies, a garage sale, produce, craft, ring cleaning. bottle stall plants, badge-making, recipe books will be available.

A barbecue lunch and devon shire tea will also be served.

The Kite Man will give an exhibition of his wares and there will be a display of Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Organisers have also promised a number of rides and activities for children.

Chief environmental health officer Rick Thessman said the Bell Park caretakers had received many complaints of the nuts and bat excreta., "The bats go after the nuts, knock them down and while they're there leave excretions," he said. "Their leaves also stain things and they make a mess."

Cr Wildin said the trees had been there a long time and no-one had ever complained before.

Cr Owens said the last caretaker never bothered to clean the mess.

Cr Shields said the trees did not let any sunlight in and cutting some down would get grass to grow in areas.

"The shade may attract people during summer but during winter no sunlight can get in there," he said. "I have no doubt this will improve the park."

Council voted and decided to cut the six trees down. Cr Webber had his name marked against it.

Cr Glenda Mather then moved that council see the final plan before any trees fall. Cr Webber seconded it and it was carried.

ELEVEN dogs were destroyed last month because they were not collected from the pound.

If owners do not collect dogs, or new homes cannot be found, they are destroyed in accordance with Livingstone Shire Council's dog bylaws.

A total of 36 dogs were impounded with 14 released to owners, six sold, one still at the pound ... and four stolen.

Council is now looking at increasing security at the pound after the break-ins.

Twenty-one of the dogs impounded in March were unregistered.

Contractors John Readers and Associates have been surveying the beachfront since last Friday and aren't sure when they will finish.

The survey results won't be known for a while.

The surveys are being conducted for data collection only.

• Department of Environment and Heritage engineer Michael Allen said there was no project involved.

"We are just collecting data for use in further investigations," he said.

The previous project on Kinka Beach was the building of a sand wall designed to stop water exiting the Causeway eroding the dunes.

John Readers and Associates' part-owner and surveyor Denis Clifford said as far as he knew the last time Kinka Beach was surveyed was in 1978.

No other beaches on the Capricorn Coast are being surveyed.

Transport Department hydrographic surveyor Ray Martin said a lot of the beaches on the Capricorn Coast were surveyed "a while ago"; possibly during the late 1970s.

He said this week's surveying was monitoring the movement of the sand to see how much, if any, erosion had occurred.

Mr Clifford said he was not sure how much Kinka Beach had been eroded over the past 15 years "but from what people in the area have told me, the erosion is pretty bad".

Tropical Pine-Fest puts out call for more princesses PRINCESSES are wanted for the Yeppoon Tropical Pine-Fest hosted by Yeppoon Lions Club.

Organiser Steve Billington is looking for entrants aged over 16, to become Pine-Fest princesses.

The club already has a record 10 charity princesses, including a late entry from Sonia Cummings who is donating to the Yeppoon Surf Life-Saving Club.

The Lions Club is hoping to break another record with the princesses. There is no entry fee this year for princesses and no need for a sponsor.

The only requirement is that the princesses sell art union tickets and attend as many functions as possible during the festival.

There are three judges. They will attend the functions and observe the princesses.

The criteria for a princess is not just looks, it is also personality, enthusiasm, general knowledge of the Capricorn Coast and they must have a commitment to help others less fortunate than themselves.

The princesses are vying for two positions: Yeppoon Tropical Pine-Fest Queen and Yeppoon Tropical Pine-Fest Miss Personality. • Not only do the princesses have the chance trhelp charities, better themselves and have a lot c. fun in the process they can also win big prizes.

There are major holidays to be won, vouchers and more.

Lions' ladies liaison officer Chris Billington said this week the club already had two entrants.

Charity princesses can also nominate for the princesses section.

Pine-Fest committee chairman Steve Billington said they wanted the princesses to begin selling tickets on August 1 "so we want people to enter before then so we can organise things".

"The money raised will go toward various charities, including the Yeppoon Ambulance for a defibulator," he said.

"The festival is actually donating to a minimum of 10 charities this year because the charity princesses are choosing their own.

The Tropical Pine-Fest's theme is tropical fun. Festivities start September 25 with a beach party and end October 3 with camel races.

Between these two events is the cabaret night, when the Yeppoon Pine-Fest Charity Queen, Queen and Miss Personality will be chosen, and the annual parade through town.

Landcare and pineapple groups unite to stabilise eroded gully CAPRICORN Coast Landcare Group and the Valley Syndicate have joined forces to stabilise a badly eroded gully with a salinity problem.

The Valley Syndicate has had a problem with a gully on its land, across the road from Yeppoon Golf Course.

With the help of the landcare group, through the National Soil Conservation Programme, syndicate members hope to solve the erosion and salinity problem.

Landcare president Jack Cowie said the syndicate had spent a lot of money on fixing the gully, so far without success.

"We are going to experiment and see if we can not only stabilise this area but areas like it," he said.

"The project will probably last about two years but right now it is in the planning stages."

The group and Valley Syndicate erected a sign on the site they hope to stabilise.

"None of the ideas the Valley Syndicate has used have worked," he said.

"Whatever they planted died because of the salinity.

"We are looking at trees that are tolerant to salt; maybe Casuarina& River Red Gums and Forest Red Gums."

Anybody is welcome to join landcare and are free to go to meetings.

Mr Cowie said the group welcomed constructive ideas from people on how to stabilise the area.

"As long as they are concerned about the land and ready to help, then we are ready to listen," he said.

Two ways to aid drought stricken ONE of the worst droughts to hit rural Australia continues to destroy properties and the farming community.

Rockhampton's Central Queensland Rural Aid Committee has offered two ways for Australians to help.

A fodder appeal has been organised to get food to starving livestock.

Today is the last on which people can donate money through Commonwealth Banks to help the farming community.

The committee has also organised a rock and country music concert at the Rockhampton Music Bowl tomorrow, Saturday.

The show will feature artists such as Keith Jamieson, Sydney's Colin Buchanan, Bundaberg's Evelyn Bury, Blackwater's Cowboys United and Rockhampton's Leah Fisher, Rockforce, Atlanta, Aurora and Renegades.

Tickets, $8 for adults and $5 for pensioners and students, will be available at the gate.

The show wil l be held between 3pmand 10.30pm.

Junior league players' enthusiasm not dampened by overcast skies, slippery conditions OVERCAST skies and slippery conditions were not going to dull the enthusiasm of Yeppoon Junior Rugby League in Rockhampton on Sunday.

A club publicity officer said after its narrow loss last week, coach Peter Condon had the 7-year-olds pumped up for a big game.

"In their first taste of a round robin fixture, the boys started the first half against the Rocky Reds," the representative said.

"Their defence this week was superb and they went to the break with a 3-all deadlock.

'The Rocky Golds faced the second-half against the young Gulls who were now on the boil. Their enthusiasm gave them a well deserved win.

"An 8-year-old combined training session on Wednesday with coaches Kruger and Ogden was used to fine tune tactics.

'The training rewarded the players.

"Kruger's lads gave an awesome display of defence which kept the opposition to one try for the entire match.

They won the game 17-7.

"Ogden's boys were motivated after their narrow loss the previous week. With renewed confidence they tan at will and proved almost impossible to (wain. They led in every quarter to run out winners 17-5.

"After going down in last week's encounter, Coach Dave Eaton's 9-year-olds were well focused.

RAIN washed out Yeppoon Ladies Bowling Club's morning play on Tuesday, but in the afternoon three competitions were played on a very heavy green.

Scores in the final of the district triples were even until the sixteenth end, when the eventual winners drew away to a comfortable lead. Maureen Vincent, Helen Ingle and Ivy McNamara defeated Ivy Ogg, Margaret Hill and Eleanor Batts 26-16.

Club triples winners Jean Bashford, Leila Goodwin and Ruth Wass defeated Doris Moulds (sub), Pam Fortune and Trish Childs 18-11. The other teams in the same competition, Maude Elliott skipped her team of Cecily Emery (sub) and Marj Hansen to victory over Joyce Cain, Yvonne Riordan and May Cruickshank 28-12.

A club representative said the team winning the trophy for the afternoon included a relatively new player Cynthia Galloway leading for Joyce Barber.

"Cynthia has been showing Beat promise, keep up the good work. They defeated Joy King and Marj Stewart 2914," the representative said.

"Competitions for Tuesday, June 8, starting at 9am are the final of the champion singles between Ruth Wass and Eleanor Batts with Ivy McNamara as marker.

THE Capricorn Coast Outrigger Club travels to Hay Point, near Mackay, this weekend to compete in all divi' sions making up round four of the outrigger racing Grand Prix series.

Members are keen to maintain an unbeaten record of champion club in the previous three rounds.

A club spokesman said said crews were hoping to keep their high success rate, particularly the masters mens, having won six gold medals from six events.

"In the junior divisions, both boys and girls , it will be their first venture away to compete with other juniorcrews," the spokesperson said.

"All crews are training extremely hard, not only for this weekend's event, but for the June 19, 20 and 21 weekend regatta at Hamilton Island.

"The Hamilton Island the most prestigious gathering of the Grand Priz series.

A club spokesperson said the Under-11 game was an even match with both teams striving hard for early advantage.

"BITS broke away with two goals after the young Swans took longer to settle," the spokesperson said.

Once settled. Yeppoon out-played the visitors in the final three quarters but the early lead proved just out of reach.

YIBC postpones play THE Yeppoon Indoor Bowls Club postponed Sunday's vice-president's afternoon after the passing away of junior vice-president Dulcie Locke.

The event will now be included with the Selectors' Afternoon on Sunday, July 4. A BBQ tea will be served after play.

Check basketball draw THE Under-12 Capricorn Coast Basketball Associa's gams scheduled-for Tuesday have been brought forward to Sunday.

A club spokesperson said two of the games have been swapped over and regretted any inconvenience.

Apps: Brendan's rugby man-of-the-match A POLISHED Grammar XV defeated a lacklustre St Brendan's side last Sunday.

Untidy defensive play allowed a more committed Grammar team two unconverted tries during the first half of the match, the visiting side working hard to secure the ball in all phases of play.

Saturday comp, social games abandoned THE Yeppoon Bowls Club competition last Wednesday resulted in W Bond and F Birkeu defeating G Hillier and G Cluver, 27/9, in a veteran pairs.

All competition and social games were abandoned on Saturday, due to the weather.

A club spokesman said pennent players should note that the game scheduled for Thursday, against NRBC, will be played at Yeppoon next Saturday, June 5.

"Yeppoon players romped home last year so let's give the opposition more of the same," the spokesperson said.

"There will be a visit from Burgowan Bowl Club, near Torbanlea, Maryborough on Sunday, July 13.

"This will be all day play, starting at 10am, with two games, and finishing with a BBQ and social after play.

"No doubt there will be lots of talent in the visitors social side and combined with the home team side, a good day should be had.

"President Bert Rial has asked players when they nominate for the day to indicate when they will play, whether they will require lunch or be at the BBQ. "Please assist by complying with this request.

EMU PARK BOY IN STATE KARATE TEAM ELEVEN-year-old Adam Clark of Emu Park, who was the youngest SKI Shotokan karate blackbelt exponent outside Japan, is continuing the sport which has already filled the family home with trophies and medals.

He could possibly gain his second dan black belt in Perth later this year and enter the World Championships in Japan in 1994.

And although aged only 11, Adam has also been selected in a three-member Queensland team to compete in the 12 and 13-year division of the Australian Championships in Melbourne in August.

But the cost of touring Australia, and perhaps overseas, for competition and grading is proving a fmancial strain on parents Noel and Karen Clark.

Adam's father, Noel, said they had already been to Brisbane three times this year and would be required to go a further two or three times in preparation for the Melbourne tournament Entrants from all Australian States and New Zealand will contest the titles.

At last year's under-11 championship in Sydney, a slight stumble lost Adam 0.9 of a point which cost him the title.

He was subsequently relegated to third place in the overall standings on a count-back.

At the recent all-styles Australian Cup, an offcolour Adam again achieved an overall third placing.

won his own style SKI championships in both under-12 and under-17 divisions.

Adam has been practising the traditional Japanese sty le Shotokan karate for seven years and trains at the Police and Citizens' Youth Club in Rockhampton.

He attends training sessions three nights a week and works-out a further three nights weekly at home.

Noel Clark said the costs of keeping Adam in competition was becoming more and more difficult.

"Adam is too young to travel by himself, which means the two of us have already been to Brisbane three times in the past five months," he said.

"He is also supposed to do 80 percent of his training for the Melbourne tournament with the team in Brisbane but that's impossible.

"But we will still have to get there two or three times before August.

"A trip to Perth with the Australian juniors team in October, when he will also have the opportunity the go for his second dan black belt, has already been organised and paid.

"With so much travelling and expenses, it really is becoming difficult "The Lions Club has been a great help in the past and paid the fare when Adam went to Sydney."

CapCoast's Under-19's Rugby team defeated Grammarians last Saturday at Cooee Bay field, two tries to one.

The win places CapCoast third in the Rugby Union Under-19 competition.

Tries were scored by Evan Scicipper and Charlie Farlow.

The Pizza Pizazz man-othe-match was awarded to Brad Lawson and the go-forward award to Justin Roth.

Coach Barry Vale was very happy with the performance.

"It was a good result, we had a few players filling in and doing well," Vale said.

"A few of the regular players let the team down by not turning up, and their absence has been noted.

"I didn't expect anything less from the team, and I'm very pleased with their performance," he said.

Meanwhile the A-grade team narrowly lost to Brothers with a final score of 9-7.

Andrew Gatenby scored the try for Capcoast which Jeff Bennett converted. A-grade Pizza Pizazz man-of-thematt% was awarded to Tony Novak for his tackling and cover defense. The go-forward award was shared by Josh Belz and Graham Pye. A-grade coach Brad Flynn said the players showed a much improved performance.

"The performance, however, was marred by some lapses in dicipline at crucial positions which allowed Brothers to convert at least three penalty goals," he said.

"The game was hard fought, with both teams throwing the ball around and missing many scoring opportunities."

The half-time score was 9-0 to Brothers, with CapCoast scoring the final try in the last few minutes of the game.

CapCoast A-grade team took the field one player short because of a late arrival.

There is no game scheduled for this weekend, the next being against Gladstone on June 12, in Gladstone.

Ground ready for first home game

Talks on coaching A SPECIAL meeting to discuss coaching appointment negotiations willbe held at the cricket clubhouse at Stevenson Park (Showgrounds) on Sunday at 1 lam.

Cricketers, representatives from local schools, representatives from the CCCC senior and junior bodies and persons from local businesses interested in providing spoilsorshi0 are invited to attend to discuss progress with negotiations to date and funding strategies.

VOLUNTEERS have been busy during the past few weeks preparing new facilities at the Emu Park Bicentennial Ground.

New toilet and changeroom blocks will be put to use for the first time when the Emu Park rugby league team meets Fitzroys in the club's first home game for 1993 this weekend.

Builders, plumbers, earth-movers and a host of other helpers volunteered their services to provide the town's major sporting venue with improved facilities.

Livingstone Shire Council was also chipping in by connecting sewerage pipes.

The three large transportable "dongas" were purchased by the Emu Park Sports and Recreation Committee last year from the Stanwell Power Station.

Meanwhile the Emu Park rugby club is gearing up for its first home game in the Central Queensland Extended League competition.

The Coast team was able to enter the extended league this season by joining forces with Rockhampton's All Blacks club and becoming its reserve side.

Complaints by the nu mber of clu bs about the All Blacks' ground has given Emu Park the opportunity to host a number of matches this year.

Club president Eddie Mallard said he was hoping to get a number of other home matches including its return game against Biloela.

Tomorrow's (Saturday) games will feature a full programme of under-19, reserve and fast grade matches.

Emu Park's successful reserve side will play at 1.30pm in front of an expected bumper crowd.

The club is enjoying one of its most successful seasons.

A controversial one-point loss to Woorabinda on the weekend denied the club a share of the top of the extended league points table.

A solid, well drilled forward pack has paved the way for its exciting backline.

This weekend's game will start with the under19 All Blacks match at noon, followed by the Emu Park-Fitzroys game at 1.30pm and the All BlacksFitzroys A-grade game at 3pm.

Me back ANOTHER month gone and, even more often than usual, people are remarking how fast this year is going. What is it about some years?Why do they seem to move faster than others? Could it be recession?

Does working longer each week to make ends meet make the year go faster? Or is it like the whistle of a train but in revetse. When the train is speeding toward you with whistle screaming its note gets higher and higher until it peaks as it draws abreast... then the note stretches into lower tones as it races away. Perhaps life is the reverse. Youth lasts forever. The six weeks' holiday at Christmas used to stretch so far ahead early in December that the planning, alone, for trips down rivers on rafts or bike rides into the bush could take a week. Then Christmas came, and the New Year, and someone had to go away for a week and, before you knew it, you were trying on a blazer, or some awful long pants and choosing the ruler, rubber, pens and pencils ... and that dreaded first day back was so terrible because, once again, a long holiday had slipped away without that big adventure taking place.

Maybe, as we get older, the years seem to pass faster because, as the "humorous" birthday cards say: "It's all downhill from here!"

•• • THOSE gloomy thoughts came about because "Old Baldy" turned 48 on Thursday and he spent the day driving to Gympie to get the paper printed ... ar being on a long trip, started to ponder. Being fat, an over 40, it's easier for him to ponder in reverse gear... looking backward. There's no effort involved. The funny part is, he's starting to think that from now on it' s all downhill. His Idds reckon it's been downhill for him for the past 20 years!!!

•• • BY the way, he took Duke, the family dog, with him for company to Gympie. On a recent trip, "OB" noticed that autogas was selling for 30.50 a litre in Gym pie and realised he could halve his running costs by converting the panel van to run on the stuff. Just one trip with the dog turned him off anything that is powered by gas!!!

•• • THERE was a growling from the van last week that turned out to be mechanical ... and not the dog.

Rhodes (who was driving, so it had to be his fault) pulled in at Gin Gin at the RACQ garage and a bloke named Ian Grant diagnosed damaged wheel-bearings on the driver's side rear wheel. It was important to get to the printer on time so "OB" asked how long the repair would take. The answer, "an hour or so" prompted a smarty reply about the "hour" being OK but it was the "or so" they were worried about Forty minutes later they were back on the road after an assortment of home-made tools had been used to remove the reluctant wheel-bearings. If you're passing through Gin Gin and feel the need for new wheelbearings, drop in at the RACQ garage (last on the left before turning up the hill to Childers) ... Ian Grant is a handy bloke to know! The Capricorn Coast Mirror would like to thank him, most sincerely, forgetting van back on the road so quickly.

•• • POLICE pull over a bloke who's been speeding and he starts to get stroppy. The police, obviously agitated themselves, shout at the bloke that while he was racing away from them his passenger door I opened and his wife had fallen out. The bloke fell his knees instantly and tears ran down his cheeks as he cried out: "What wonderful news, how fantastic, I thought I had gone deaf!!"

•• • BACK in Yeppoon it was obvious there was a charity function being held because Nick and Dora Callianiotis were doing their thing where they outbid each other at an auction. On this occasion it was the Hobby Horse Derby Day on Saturday and there they were, one or two rows from the front, bidding against each other for the privilege of "buying" John Richardson in the final event. Dora won, and so did John Richardson, so she even wound up with a small pmfit on the race (very small). Earlier, Nick had bid on a few others and had quietly bid on (and wound up with) another entrant in the same event while a group of the entrant's mates pooled their money to outbid him. It was one of those funny auctions where Nick raised a finger as John Millroy babbled along as auctioneers do and the other group called out "wait a minute, wait a minute" and added a few more dollars to the pooled pot for their next bid... then Nick would raise one finger and away they would go again. It was all in good fun and the final price Nick paid most certainly helped the Girl Guide movement ... and that's what it's all about!!!

•• • WHAT is the secret to the success of the hobby horse day? Itis always well organised and always well attended (even when it rained as it did on Saturday) but there has to be more to it than months of hard work.

Whatever it is lee s hope itcontinues ...everyone needs a dose of fun, at least once a year!
