Coast growth surges ahead EXTRAORDINARY growth on the Capricorn Coast is showing no signs of slowing down with this month's Livingstone Shire Council meeting expected to be the busiest of its current term. Council staff has been inundated with subdivisions, town planning, duplex and building applications. In major applications alone, processing for park residential in West Yeppoon, The Caves and Ramsay Creek account for 335 lots. A number of units, including seven at Meikleville Hill, have also been submitted and council will be calling for expressions of interest on a West Yeppoon industrial estate. This is on top of the normal housing applications and QIW's submission regarding the development of Savemore Shopping Centre. Shire chairman Cr Barbara Wildin said this

Thieves break into Caltex Star THIEVES broke into the Caltex Star Service Station in James Street, Yeppoon, early on Thursday morning, scattering dozens of packets of cigarettes onto the median strip. It is believed access to the station was achieved by prising a tin-sheet off the building's roof. More than 40 packets of cigarettes, a few packets of tobacco, lighters and a tray were left on the median strip between the station and the Pacific Hotel after security guard Jeff Phillips claimed he disturbed the thieves. Police were called and four people were taken for questioning. Service station owner Don Cooper said the break-in was the fifth this year.

week the council offices were extremely busy but staff had responded well to the workload. "This month's meeting will be the busiest of the council's current two-year term. Cr Wildin said all applications would be dealt with in time for processing. "The council's biggest challenge in this era of growth is to retain the charm of the area but still allow as many people as possible to move into it," she said. "Council must keep a close eye on the water and sewerage infrastructure and ensure it remains effective and sufficient. "But of course the area needs the increased rates base to afford developments and improvements and to enable more people to share costs. "People come to Livingstone Shire because of its existing charm so it is important to ensure this progress and development is done properly." A drive around the streets of Yeppoon this week also highlighted the magnitude of the area's growth. A number of new sub-divisions, particularly on the north side of town, cut modern sealed roads into former scrub. Also, the amount of commercial residential building taking place is high with a massive strata-titled development at Cooee Bay/Lammermoor Beach and others in Normanby Street and Farnborough Road. Emu Park is also enjoying a building boom with new homes appearing in almost every street at a hard-to-believe rate. Cr Wildin said some sections of the community felt council was not encouraging sufficient industry to the area. She said industry would develop quickly once the area had the population to attract it. "Naturally industry will do the figures before establishing here," she said. "Once the population has grown to sufficient numbers, then industry will follow.,"

Council working on $4m. Savemore building plans LIVINGSTONE Shire Council has received a "considerable" amount of submissions from the developers handling the $4 million construction and refurbishment of the Savemore Supermarket. Shire chairman Cr Barbara Wildin said council was assessing the submissions and hoping to draw up an agreement by the June council meeting. Cr Wildin said 21 points relating to the road closure, alternate roads and access points had already been referred to the developers for further detail. "The council still has queries with the road closure and associated problems and has still not received a signed agreement," Cr Wildin said. "Until we receive the signed agreement we

cannot proceed with any road-closure approval. "However if everything comes together quickly and all our queries are met, council could give the green light at its June meeting." The shopping centre is being developed by International Project Management (Asia) Pty Ltd for Brisbane's QIW corporation. Manager Andrew Monk last month called for registrations of interest for building the new centre and refurbishing the existing complex. He also said he planned to begin civil works and services alterations by June 15. The newly named Keppel Bay Plaza is hoped to be trading by Christmas with a 50 percent increase in parking and an increase in retailing tenants from 28 to 46.
