COAST DIGGERS LOOK BACK CAPRICORN Coast Diggers will start their Anzac Day observances tomorrow with Dawn Services at Emu Park, The Caves and Yeppoon.

Emu Park's Dawn Service is at 4.28am at the Cenotaph overlooking the sea. The Caves' Dawn Service is at 4.28am at the Cenotaph in Buch Square and Yeppoon's is at Sam at the Cenotaph in Beaman Park.

Yeppoon RSL members and Vietnam veterans will then go to Livngstone Shire Council chambers to lay wreaths at the Honour Board.

A traditional gunfire breakfast will be held after The Caves' Dawn Service in the beer garden of The Caves Hotel.

Breakfast will be held in Emu Park at the Pine Beach Hotel at Gam and a church service will be held at 10am in the Emu Park RSL hall.

The first march is at Yeppoon with assembly at Yeppoon Railway station at 9.30am.

Marchers head off at 9.45am along James

Street, into Normanby Street and to the beach, turn back into Normanby Street and end at the Cenotaph in Beaman Park.

Yeppoon Choral Society members will lead the hymn at the service at 10am.

The Anzac luncheon will be held in the catering pavilion at the Yeppoon Showground for ex-service personnel and guests. • Emu Park's march leaves the Pine Beach Hotel at 11.30am with assembly at 11.15am. The luncheon will be held at the Pine Beach Hotel at noon.

Rev Keith McLaughlinwill conduct the services.

The Caves march will leave at 10.50am to arrive at the Cenotaph at 11 am where the main service will begin.

The CWA branch will supply Anzac lunch at noon or 12.30pm, depending on the service.

Mirror appointed CES Agent ANYONE seeking work can now apply to the new Commonwealth Employment Service Agency opened in the Capricorn Coast Mirror office.

CES Rockhampton Job Centre manager Phil Frethey said the agency was available to handle job applications and placements on the Capricorn Coast.

Anyone wanting to apply for work can register at the office at 30 Arthur Street, Yeppoon (opposite Yeppoon Butchers).

Employers seeking staff could list the posi-

tions available at the same office. The phone number is 39 5555 and facsimile number 395 395 (the same as the Capricorn Coast Mirror).

The office is not connected with the Department of Social Security.

Mr Frethey said the new agents, Mirror owners John and Suzy Watson, had employed fulltime office staff so that the CES office would be open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

All application forms are available at the CES section of the Mirror office.

Mr Frethey said all information provided at

the CES Agency would be treated with the strictest confidence.

He said anyone wanting work, even if they were already employed, was entitled to apply to the Capricorn Coast Mirror's CES agency.

"The initials CES say it all. We are an employment service. We deal with unemployed people hoping to help them become employed people," he said.

"To do this, we need to know every job that is available so that we can match the people on our lists with the positions.

"It is important for employers to list their positions with the CES agency so that locally listed unemplOyed can be given first option. That makes for happier employees and employers.

"In the same vein, it is important that people looking for work register with the CES agency so that they are not alone in their job hunting."

The CES in Rockhampton is notified by the Mirror CES agency of every person seeking work together with their qualifications and Capricorn Coast jobs are also notified.

ONE of the inheritances of the National Party Government has been the disgraceful neglect of our public buildings in this area.

One of the first tasks as Members of the Goss Government for Jim Pearce & myself was to carry out an audit of maintenance & capital works needs of our schools, hospitals, police stations & other government buildings. That resulted in more than $5 million being spent on capital works. On top of this, $1.87 million has been spent on maintenance of these assets. Leaving aside the obvious benefits of better classrooms & hospital facilities, this expenditure has generated 4900 pay packets in our workforce.

It would be marvellous to report Jim's & my job is completed & that all our assets are up to scratch - you & I know we have a fair way to go before we can make that boast; however, like Jim, I will continue to fight for funds for upgrading our facilities.

AFTER months of deliberation by Yeppoon State High School chaplaincy committee, a fulltime chaplain has been appointed to Yeppoon State High.

Tony Salecich was chosen from a number of candidates and starts at the high school at the beginning of second term.

"He is a man who has been involved in education (he is a qualified maths/science teacher), youth counselling and young people's work for many years," spokesman Phil Walters said.

"Tony began teaching in 1973 at Blackwater High School and two years later moved to Bundaberg High School where he remained for nine years. For the next six years he was the Central Queensland co-ordinator for Scripture Union, organising and leading school and churchbased activities, camping and training events.

"Tony and his wife live in Rockhampton with their two teenage children. He is presently, among other things, a part-time chaplain at the Rockhampton Girls Grammar School, a member of the Rockhampton Youth Orchestra Council and an active member of the Hornets Hockey Club, a sport he is keen to get involved with on the Coast," he said.

"The chaplaincy is funded by Coast churches with support from Livingstone Council and the high school parents and citizens association.

Further local support is needed however and will be sought over the coming months.

"High school principal Rob Stones and chaplaincy committee members, which is comprised of the ministers of the nine supporting churches, are delighted that someone of Mr Salecich's experience and standing with the community has accepted the position of chaplain and will be available in a full-time counselling and support capacity to the students and parents of the school."

School reading tutors win praise PARENTS and teachers at Yeppoon State School have been working together to provide a' reading tutor programme to help children improve their literacy skills.

"The programme has been a great success with all participating children showing a marked improvement in their reading and writing performance," principal Richard Wilkinson said.

"It would not have been possible without the dedication of reading tutors Janette Embery, Sue Wright, Wendy Morgan, Kaylene Chappell, Wendy Nelson, Doreen Ostwald, Merle Trotter, Heather Embrey and Robyn McIntyre who have contributed 200 hours of voluntary contact time with the eight children on the programme.

"These tutors also completed a series of workshops prior to the start of their work with the children," he said.

ROD YOUNG, Yeppoon Courthouse's Clerk' of-the-Court for 17 years, has retired.

A farewell party was held at the Pacific Hotel last Wednesday night.

Because of restructuring, the position of clerk-of-the-court will change to registrar once the State government agencies begin operations, sometime in July..

Until then, Paul Jackson has been made acting Clerk-of-the-Court.

Mr Jackson said this week it was not known whether the registrar would be full-time or parttime.

He said the government agency would virtually make the courthouse a "one-stop shop" for government services.

"This will not denigrate services but hopefully provide an even better service for the people of the shire," he said.

With the work the agency will take over, the registrar will be left with court duties only.

The registrar's position has not yet been advertised.

AN oil spill off the Coast in our area is always a possibility and a meeting has been called by the Wildlife Preservation Society to assist the community's understanding.

"As a community, it is hoped that in the event of an oil spill, we would volunteer our efforts to deal with the effects on our beaches and our wildlife," publicity officer Molly Crawford said.

"Environment Department conservation officer Alan Horsup has been invited to discuss how to look after our beaches and wildlife in case of an oil spill and we invite everyone to come along and listen and ask questions."

The meeting is on Tuesday, April 28 in Yeppoon State High School library at 7.30pm.

Mrs Crawford said people could contact her, 39 6790, if they were interested in the problem, but were unable to attend the meeting.

"The improvement in the children's reading performance means they are now reading at an acceptable standard for their age. This improvement enhances each child's self-esteem and has them performing confidently in other aspects of their learning as well. English Bull Terrier badly mauled in town dog fight

AN English Bull Terrier was badly mauled by four dogs last Tuesday apparently when trying to get to a bitch in season.

Downtown Video owner Robin Radosavljevic said she had seen the dogs fighting late Tuesday afternoon but was not sure what had started the ruckus.

Svendsen's Takeaway owners Cris and Henriette Svendsen said this week they found the Bull Terrier "hanging around" the back of their shop on Wednesday and called the dog catcher.

Livingstone Shire Council dog catcher Roy Mersh, who saw the dog after the fight, suggested to the owner the dog be put down.

His suggest ion was based on the extent of the dog's injuries and its age and the fact that it was an habitual roamer and was now unable to defend itself.

The Bull Terrier's owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, said his dog was out on the streets because it was trying to get to a bitch on heat.

"Even if the male dogs are locked up, when theyget the scent there is no stopping them," he said.

"They will even injure themselves trying to escape and go after the bitch.

"It's not their fault. They are just following their sexual instincts. Some humans are the same.

"I have a concrete block fence around my yard with a aluminium gate. My dog has broken through the gate just to get out to the bitches.

"I can't tie him up because of the cuts around his neck from the fight but why should I have to put him in chains when there are bitches on heat walking around the town causing havoc," he said.

Mr Mersh said this week most of the time owners do the right thing when their bitches come into season but occasionally there was the odd offender.

He said dogs should be on a leash at all times when out of their yard.

A Coast veterinarian said owners of bitches who did not want to breed from them could put them on "the pill" or have them desexed.

"This is not an instant cure. It may take a few days for the scent to go away. It is a preventative measure," he said.

"The best preventative measure is to put the bitch under lock and key when she is in season.

"It is a good idea to have them (male and female) desexed unless you are going to breed.

"It does not create psychological problems for the dogs nor does it make them less manly or less feminine," he said.

"Irresponsible people take the worst traits of both dogs and put them into one. This is when problems are caused because the dogs become very unpredictable."

According to Richard Murray and Helen Penridge even the most aggressive dogs were only aggressive under specific conditions. Many aggressive animals were at other times affectionate and friendly.

"Most dog owners are completely unaware of the ability of their canine pets to damage people and animals. Yet the potential to maim is always there in every dog," the authors said.

FITZROY WORK 'IN SPARE TIME' THE Broadsound electorate office in Normanby Street, Yeppoon, will continue to operate five days a week between the hours of 9am and 5pm, Member for Broadsound Jim Pearce said this week.

"Some residents contacted me in response to comments I made a fortnight ago in my weekly column which appears to have given them the wrong impression about my role in the Broadsound electorate," Mr Pearce said.

"I did say I was left with no option but to devote more time to the people in the new electorate of Fitzroy. But this does not mean the

electorate of Broadsound will be disadvantaged.

"The facts are that I will be working in the Fitzroy electorate whenever I have spare time, particularly at night and on the weekends."

Mr Pearce said he had indicated his intentions because he wanted everyone to know that he was going to step up his campaign for Fitzroy.

"I am not sneaking away. I am being open about my movements and people should know that. The Broadsound electorate will not suffer.

My constituents will get the service they are entitled to."

Council, Army in paper war LIVINGSTONE Shire Council has decided to fight the Australian Army over the cost of maintaining council roads into the Shoalwater Bay Military Training Area.

But it's strictly a dour rearguard action by the council, because the army has already laid down the law.

The council knows it's almost impossible to beat the army, particularly in a paper war battle -but the council says it's determined to fight on in a campaign acting chairman Cr Kevin Hinz titles "Operation Fightback."

The opening skirmish came when the council hit the army for a $230,348 bill for the cost of maintaining council roads used by army trucks and armoured personnel carriers during 1991-92.

Roads include Stanage Bay Road, RossmoyaCanal Creek Road and Raspberry Creek Road - the Shoalwater Bay military access 'roads the army calls the grey, yellow-brown and green routes.

Council's invoice landed on the desk of Lieutenant-Colonel Frank Riley at Victoria Barracks, Brisbane - and the military communications circuits started warming up as he and his troops at Rockhampton and Shoalwater Bay set about proving (to the army's satisfaction, at least) that the troops weren't using the roads nearly as much as the local civilians.

Annual drama festival looks to be successful

YEPPOON Little Theatre's annual drama festival has had an outstanding response to invitations from other parts of the region and the May 2 and 3 festival looks successful.

Nominations have been received from Gladstone State High School, Biloela Theatrical Society, Clermont Nyalla group, Boyne-Tannum drama group and Yeppoon.

• "With such an enormous response we have found it necessary to move the festival from our own 'Showplace' to Yeppoon Town Hall," publicity officer Margaret Caulfield said.

Performances start at 7.30pm on both nights and admission is adults, one night $6 or two nights $10 and children, one night $3 or two nights $5.

"For the first time, it was decided that a junior section in the festival would be offered including mime, dialogue in costume and character recital," she said.

"Nominations for these sections have been received from Penny Irving's "Seaside Company" and Nola Vaughan's Speech and Drama Group."

These performances will be held at the "Showplace" William Street, Yeppoon, on Saturday, May 2, starting at 2pm, admission $1 each. Drinks will be available.

A light supper will be served on the final night of the festival in Yeppoon Town Hall. A licensed bar will operate during the festival.

To show it was serious in saving army (taxpayers') money the army said it did independent traffic counts on the Shoalwater Bay access roads.

The army reduced its share of the council's claim for St anage Bay Road maintenance from 74 per cent to 50 per cent (S71,450), Raspberry Creek 20 per cent ($61,588) and RossmoyaCanal Creek Road claims were cut from 66 per cent to 20 per cent, meaning the army will pay only $18,905 of the council's annual maintenance cost of $94,521.

Colonel Riley suggested that this year, well before July, they should inspect the routes together.

On Tuesday, Livingstone Shire engineer Pat Murphy told council the army's attitude was "untimely" and it meant council was now $78,405 short on its budget.

He said it was not true, as claimed by Colonel Riley, that any army work done on council roads should be discounted by council in the annual claim for maintenance money.

Council agreed unanimously to write in protest about the army's "tight-fisted" attitude to every federal member of parliament in this area, including some opposition members, and to ask Member for Capricornia Keith Wright to take the issue personally to the Defence Minister.

CONFEDERATE Action Party, Yeppoon branch, membership now exceeds 46 and registration papers have been lodged with a federal membership of 600.

"With policies including significant protection for Australian producers, while the government and coalition argue, even among themselves, as to what is effectively the least painful way of breaking our primary producers, the CAP is gaining support with the view to rebuild both primary and secondary industry," branch chairman Leo Black said.

EP-Rockhampton Road upgraded A $85,000 project to upgrade part of Rockhampton-Emu Park Road at Nerimbera should be completed by October, Rockhampton North Member Robert Schwarten and Member for Broadsound Jim Pearce said on Wednesday.

The project starts about 7kms east of Rockhampton at that city's boundary and extends 1.4kms east.

Work comprises reconstructing this section to provide two, wider traffic lanes and parking bays adjacent to residential areas and is expected to generate 220 weeks of employment for the Transport Department's workforce over the next four months.

Mr Schwarten said a preliminary $180,000 allocation last December funded materials and relocation of services in advance of construction.

Mr Pearce said improving flood immunity and flood back up from the Fitzroy River would benefit tourist and commuter traffic from Nerimbera quarries and Australian Meat Holdings.

"Related projects include reconstructing the Nerimbera turnoff and providing a new structure over Blacks Creek, which was completed last year for $1.07 million," Mr Pearce said.

"More than $940,000 is currently being spent to upgrade a 700 metre section near the CQME cattle crossing, including the floodway."

Mr Pearce said reconstructing a section fron _ Blacks Creek to the next open level crossing was also planned.

"In a glossy document with Premier Wayne Goss' photo on it, Mr Goss said the Yeppoon Centre would help give access to local businesses to various business services," Mr Lester said.

"These services would include provision of practical business advice; provision of basic education and training programmes in business start up and management; provision of centralised services such as photocopying, telephone answering, accountancy and computer services; provision of low cost small work premises; provision of assistance to people undertaking feasibility studies either directly or by linking them with consultants, research personnel and equity finances and raising the general level of technological innovation and productivity by providing technical research support assistance.

"There would also be a close link between business on the Coast and TAFE, and so the myriad of promises in the document goes on," he said.

"At the moment there appears to be no thought even of such a development. In fact, the State Government has closed down the TAFE Restaurant Training Centre at Rosslyn Bay and it has not gone ahead with a provision to start a new TAFE facility at Yeppoon. All there is is a very temporary set up at the moment.

"Small business on the Coast is struggling and needs somewhere to turn. The State Government seems to have no conception of how small businesses work.

"This is obviously yet another broken promise that the Labor Party came out with before the last election," Mr Lester said.

JOANNE Madden was main speaker at the April 8 Capricorn Coast Forum Club meeting to the topic ... "Crime - what is it?".

She spoke to members about Social Security fraud. Inger Soldal was the following speaker.

Sue Maclean chaired the meeting, Billie Sinclair was the evening's critic and Janice Fmschauer moved the vote of thanks to the speakers.

Reports were given on recent conventions in Brisbane and Monto that were attended by members.

Next meeting is at 8pm, on Wednesday, April 22 at the Yeppoon Community Centre, Jolm Street. Tania Rayfield will speak on the topic "Strangers in a far-off land". Special guest is Women's Forum Clubs president Mary Locke.

Sophie wins shell KEPPEL Bay Shell Club's Kids Club enjoyed viewing slides of collecting and camping on the Great Barrier Reef at April's meeting.

Sophie Moore was the winner of the competition ... the prize was a beautiful helmet shell.

Lucky new member for March was John Boyle ... a new junior member.

Slides of past shell shows were shown for the senior members. Some were taken more than 10 years ago and showed the members looking much younger. Beautifully coloured pecten shells were the shirt box display for the night.

Discussions about shells on stamps were held as this will be one of the sections at the July Shell Show.

The next meeting - the club's 30th annual meeting - was at the Whitman Street Clubhouse on April 24.

1989 Anzac Day address by the late (Farnborough School principal)John Runham JUST what is meant by Anzac Day? In the past few weeks since I was asked to give this address, I've had time to reflect and consider this question.

To help me I asked my class of Year 6s and 7s to write down, without prompting from me, what they thought Anzac Day meant.

I am saddened to think that real life is judged from a television presentation and I sincerely hope that you who have joined us have found that it's not quite as boring in real life!

My memories of Anzac Day go back to the late '40s and early '50s when there were a lot more original Diggers around than there are today and to the addresses at school by mates of my grandfather like Bill Young and Robbie Robertson who had been there at Gallipoli with him. Through their eyes, my generation was introduced to the Anzac legend and began to understand something of the horrors and sadness of war.

At home I remember a grandfather who rarely spoke of what he had seen and heard, despite the fact that he had been in the thick of it and had been awarded a Military Medal while serving as a medic at Gallipoli and had experienced the gassing and quagmires of France. He only opened up when one his old war-time mates dropped in for a quiet drink or to play a game of chess. The scars had run very deep. Yet he was one of the fortunate ones who returned and for a time in the 1930s was head teacher of Leichhardt Ward Boys in Rockhampton.

But what exactly is Anzac Day? Firstly, I believe it is a day of remembrance. A day on which we remember those gallant men and women of many generations who have selflessly given themselves to aid ow nation in time of war. Patsy Adam-Smith in her book "The Anzacs" began her preface with the statement of General William Sherman, "War is Hell" and she continued, "It is time to strip the film from honour-dimmed eyes and face the uncomfortable, terrible facts as well as the emotion-stirring flutter of pennants and the silvery cries of trumpets and the beating of drums. War is hell. But in our attempt to denigrate it, to outlaw it, we must remember not to castigate the victims of war and every man who fights is a victim. We must remember that the hand that holds the weapon is not he who plans or benefits from the battle".

Yes, by our gathering together here today, we do not glorify war, but we gather to pay due honour to those who have suffered on our behalf in the many theatres of war around the world.

Secondly, I believe it is a day of reflection.

Those Australian soldiers who landed on the Gallipoli peninsula in the early hours of Sunday, April 25, 1915, made history and established a tradition which I hope will never disappear from the Australian way of life.

The tradition of mateship, humour and determination to carry out the task even under the most adverse of situations. Those soldiers displayed to the world that Australia had come of age and we were no longer a collection of separate colonies, but a nation, ready to take its place on the stage of world history.

To borrow a phrase Slim Dusty, "They did us proud". Their sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters have followed in that tradition and it is up to us of the present generation to carry on and continue to make Australia a great nation. It is not an easy road.

And lastly, I believe it should be a day of vision.

One of my pupils wrote of Anzac Day, "It doesn't mean much to me because I'd rather think about things that are happening and are going to happen, not things that have happened". Yes, it's very true that we should not spend inordinate amount of time looking to the past, regretting our failures, reminiscing on our successes but that we should be looking to the future and be eager to progress to better things.

I know that as I look out at the upcoming generation, my children, that they are looking forward to the time when they are adults and are eager to change the world to be a better place than it is today. They are young men and women of vision.

But can I sound a word of warning? Someone once said "Those who do not learn from history are bound to repeat it!" Yes, set your sights high, but do not forget the lessons of history. Do not forget the past but learn from it.

Rev J Prowse of Bundaberg summed it all up in his address on Anzac Day, 1921 when he said, "They died that wicked war may cease. We must not forget that, we must live and pray and work for a warless world, for a time when The war drum throbs no longer, and the battle flag is furled, In the Parliament of man, The Federation of the world.

Our fallen heroes died to make their country great, prosperous and happy. We must live to turn that ideal into reality."

Yes, on this the 74th anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli, let us honour those men and women who have gone before and resolve to continue their struggle to make this world a better •and a more peaceful place for all mankind.

by Mervyn Scope, April, 1985 CRITICISM of Anzac Day appears to come mostly from intellectuals, people affiliated with disarmament and peace groups and from left wing trade unionists.

Criticism from trade union officials is hardest to understand. Our standard of living and our freedoms have mostly derived from the efforts of trade unionists in their constant campaign for higher wages and better working conditions. Their parades and the observance of Labour Day to honour those who have been at the forefront of that struggle is not subject to the critical abuse to which Anzac Day and returned soldiers are subject.

One would think that union officials, in particular, would be aware that many, perhaps the majority, in the Australian forces are, or were, union members. Surely they understand that, in this century in two world wars, in Malaya, Korea and in Vietnam, Australians have risked their lives and some have given their lives, to preserve the living standards so hard won by union effort.

All critics of Anzac Day fail to' understand the conditions that apply and the attitude of people in the event of an unprovoked attack by an aggressor nation.

In the two world wars of this century, the pattern has been the same. It begins with a potential external threat which is generally disregarded in an attitude of 'it can't happen here'. As the threat develops, a small minority voice their disquiet in regard to the unprepared state of the nation and find themselves vilified as war-mongers.

The threat grows, but the general populace is placated by carefully worded, reassuring utterances of the political leaders. More and more join the ranks of the protesters, but without avail.

Disarmament and appeasement is the order of the day, not to be lightly abandoned. When, despite appeasement, war is imminent, belated efforts are made to re-arm but war intervenes before any substantial progress is made.

With war declared, the nation, imbued with a great sense of patriotism, emotion and fear, looks to its young people to stand in its defence.

The politicians, who have allowed the situation to develop, now make plans for the youth of the country to risk their lives in that defence.

Their patriotic utterances all follow the same pattern - the threat, the urgency, the duty and the promises (particularly of eternal gratitude) youth responds. It is not, however, a universally spontaneous response but occurs in four distinct waves.

First, the adventurous types respond plus those who, having taken an interest in the developing threat from its inception, have no doubts of the extent of the danger and the need for swift action.

These are quickly enlisted, armed with obsolete weapons (left over from the last war), giving a minimum of training and despatched to the war front where, facing a well armed, well trained enemy, they are decimated and repulsed.

This then leads to the second stage. The politicians and populace, greatly alarmed, call for a greater effort and so the next wave of recruits emerge. These are generally a more settled type.

Though there is no reason to suppose that any stage

er to criticism is better than the others as fighting troops, this second stage is perhaps the most courageous. They know of the heavy casualties of the earlier enlistment yet voluntarily tear themselves from a life of security to engage in a war for which they have no great liking. Though better equipped and trained, they still suffer but somehow manage to slow down, at times, even repulse enemy pressure.

As this wave ends, enlistments fall and fear again becomes the national trait. The third group of enlistments now begins. The enlistees, generally reluctant, are subjected to an orchestrated campaign, a barrage of advertising, recruiting drives, political speeches and rosy promises, stated and implied, designed specifically to woo them from 'heir comfortable lives and impel them into a world war, death and danger for which they have no appetite.

The last stage, of course, is conscription. Not popular in Australia, it can, and has been, applied.

Even when not used, the fear of it encourages some to volunteer on the basis that being a volunteer is preferable to being conscripted.

In both world wars, these four stages supplied sufficient troops to see the war through.

Anzac Day, revived by conflict, becomes the avenue for the exprcssion of appreciation of a grateful nation. The returning troops are feted and honoured and have every reason to believe that their efforts will always be appreciated and that the sacrifice of those who died will always be treasured.

It says little for the moral character of a nation which allows its legislators, educators and media to mould the minds of following generations in such a way that a vocal minority can so influence them that they who benefited most hold Anzac Day in scorn and ridicule and question the motives and actions of those who served and died whilst those who insisted that tb,ey go somehow remain blameless.

It must give some measure of satisfaction to returned soldiers still living that the wheel appears to have turned, that the youth of today view the sacrifices of war in a more thoughtful and understanding manner.

A letter to those who have served in uniform,

by Yeppoon RSL president Bruce Barnett TODAY the ex-service man or women is faced with the problem of growing older and the problem advancing age brings to us all.

There is no need for you to feel alone, the RSL was formed by forward thinking people many years ago. Its prime aim was, is to this day, the welfare of the ex-service people of Australia.

Many who have not joined the league over the years may have had a bad experience on their initial approach to it or feel the league has lost its way. All I can say to these eligible members is that the league is only as good or helpful as those who manage its many sub-branches throughout the nation.

Your local Yeppoon sub-branch holds the view that our first duty is to the care, welfare and well being of those who have served in the defence forces or are the next of kin of someone who has been in uniform.

Yeppoon has active welfare officers to assist you in gaining any benefits which may be due to you or yours, these officers will assist you in preparing claims or appeals and are a ready source of information on such matters.

We also concentrate on assisting the widows of ex-servicemen. This assistance starts on the death of the husband - she will be helped in arranging and financing the funeral, making out claims for widows allowances and continued help with home maintenance, social activities.

The care of widows is important to us as we strongly believe we can guide them through their traumatic period and relieve them of some of the burdens they may encounter.

To those who believe they are not eligible to join the RSL, I would explain that the title RSL now stands for Returned and Service League. Basically any person who has been a member of the services for a period of six months or more is eligible to be a full member. A membership subscription fee of $13 per year is all it costs. A further $2 per year may be paid if you wish the RSL newspaper. This paper will be delivered to you by us at your address four times per year.

Remember if you have served in the Army, Navy, Air force, CMF or Reserve Forces for a period of six months you are eligible.

To those who are eligible but feel they would prefer not to join the league, I ask then to consider furnishing basic details of their service, disabilities, to our welfare officer. This information is of great assistance to us when we are contacted by Veteran Affairs or community welfare officers on your behalf.

If you feel age will prohibit you being active within the league, forget it as even though we now have a group of younger members, the majority of us are as old or older than you may be. Think about it. At least we will get to know you and will have knowledge of any problems you may have.

We owe so much to original Anzacs A speech given by the late Matron Gus Moore at the Yeppoon 1976 Dawn Service.

WE commemorate, in this early dawn, the immortal landing on the shores of Gallipoli by units of Australian and New Zealand armed forces.

This was not the first incursion into war by Australian soldiers but their conduct on this occasion was so outstanding, their courage and fortitude so steadfast, that the free world acclaimed them. On alIthat day and in the following months, they set a Wstandard of Australian behavior in battle that is known, and will always be known, as the 'Anzac Spirit'.

Every Australian who dons a service uniform is imbued with this Anzac spirit and every Australian, when he lays his uniform aside, still retains, in greater or lesser degree, some of the spirit of Anzac in his make-up.

We owe so much to the original Anzacs. By their actions, and the impression they made on the rest of the world, we were accepted as a nation ready to

take our place and to play our part in preserving democracy and the freedom it encompasses.

The Anzac spirit, pervading as it has the actions and attitudes of Australian troops in the many conflicts in which they have been engaged in the 61 years since the 'landing', has helped to elevate Australia to the place it now holds among the nations of the world.

The debt we owe to them is recognised by the great majority of Australians, as evidenced by the general acceptance of Anzac Day as our national day and the affection in which returned soldiers, particularly the aged, sick and maimed are regarded.

This dawn service is your service, the tribute of those who returned, to the memory of those who paid the supreme sacrifice, to the mates you knew who did not return. All Australia salutes you and we join with you in this simple ceremOny of dedication and appreciation of their sacrifice with pride and thankfulness.

BRILLIANT FLOWER DISPLAY AT PENSIONERS' SOCIAL WET weather kept the attendance at the social of the Yeppoon Pensioners League litird at the Yeppoon Town Hall on Tuesday, April 14, down to 68.

But the unexpected - though welcome - rain caused the cancellation of the ladies outdoor bowls in Rockhampton enabling top Rockhampton soloist Claire Ireland to attend the afternoon and entertain social-goers.

Weather also cut short Yeppoon ladies outdoor bowling and Leib Goodwin was able to come to the social and act as Claire's accompanist.

The afternoon was opened by president Bill Shuttlewood who remarked on the brilliant display of flowers which decorated the stage front and he asked those present to stand in silence to the memory of member Ann Nugent who had been a constant social goer and contributor to the floral decorations at Yeppoon social afternoons over recent years.

Prior to the social, Maureen Warwick (pianist), Arthur Lawn and Tony Ceff (saxophones), Viv Ireland (violin) and Bob Anderson (drums) played a selection of popular numbers.

MIGHTY Emu Park went down with all guns blazing against the tough Norths club in their first rugby league reserve 1992 visit to Rocichampton's Browne Park on the weekend.

Norths' have taken all before them this season but the small coastal village threw everything at them to record a gallant 30-18 loss.

After the disappointment of the Park's first game against Yeppoon being cancelled the week before, the Emus were looking forward to placing a scalp on the belt but could not hold the powerful Rockhampton club.

Yeppoon recruit Shane Patterson crossed the line twice for the Emus in an encouraging debut while the galloping Peter Malick chipped in for another.

Ever reliable lock Kent 'The Kid' Svendsen also got through the Knight's defence to serve up one of the hardest games Norths have encountered so far.

The competition will break for Easter and then Emu Park will travel back to Brown Park on May 3 to play All Blacks.

The opening games cancellation was particularly disappointing for the club because of the work done at the club's home ground.

It would have been the inaugural match on the new look ground, the Bicentennial Cricket Ground, and this years sponsors CQ Turf Layers (Kent Svendsen and Richard Little) have it looking a treat. Next time a little rain falls let's not play cricket rules.

Also a word of congratulations to former coach Terry Simpson and his lovely wife Lesley. A double bundle of joy on the way and plans for leaving the area.

THERE were good attendances at Singing Ship Indoor Bowls especially on Easter Saturday.

Visitors welcomed were Verma and Neil Hall ing with David and Marie Morris), Mary Volling and Cora Healy from Rockhampton.

The grand cent sale drew a large crowd and proved highly successful. 'Thanks to the help of willing workers. L Sagnol won the Easter Hamper. The snap raffle of a turkey and vegetables went to Dulcie Hollingsworth and lucky door to Kath Mclllwraith. The number of prizes is too numerous to mention and all were of high quality.

Bowls will be played on Anzac Day during the afternoon starting at 1.30pm. Visitors are welcome to play.

Singing Ship was downed by QRI Indoor Bowls Club on Saturday afternoon the week before.

The final score resulted in QRI scoring 143 points to Singing Ship's 103. Vice president John Smith welcomed the visitors. Three games of bowls were played before afternoon tea.

Fred Brown, president of QRI Club, thought the laughter in the hall throughout the games bore testimony to the fact that many friendships and good fellowship between the two clubs had been firmly cemented over the years.

A return match has been arranged for Thursday night, October 8. President Fred thanked Ida Munns for filling in as a team member for QRI. Singing Ship Indoor Bowls Club welcomes newcomers Tuesday and Saturday starting at 1.30pm and Thursdays at 7pm.

Coast sporting clubs gain gov't grants DEPARTMENT of Tourism, Sport and Racing has released details of the 1991/92 junior coaching and capital works programmes with Capricorn Coast sporting clubs receiving about $13,635.

CQ sport and recreation development officer Robert Whan said clubs that had applied for grants under the 1991/92 Sports Assistance Scheme and had not heard from their state association regarding their success or not, should contact the Department of Tourism, Sport and Racing as soon as possible.

"The money will not be automatically sent to each club. It is up to the club to fill out a claim form in order for the Department of Tourism, Sport and Racing to correctly allocate the funds," Mr Whan said.

"This claim form can be obtained from either the

Department of Tourism, Sport and Racing or from local State members.

TRIATHLETE John Hobson is gearing to face me of the biggest names in the sport of triathlon at the World Cup Triathlon which will be held on Queensland's Gold Coast on Sunday, April 26.

YEPPOON lawn bowlers were able to return to the green last week after a short closure, due to maintenance and repair being carried out, both on and off the playing surface.

"At a recent afternoon tea, president Bert Rial expressed his thanks to the few volunteers who turned up to help," publicity officer Harry McNamara said.

"Most of whom gave many hours of their day and Bert Rial set the example by giving more than the 40 hours working week.

"Even patron Max Hutton gave a few days of his time, but we did not feel inclined to trust Max's agility on a ladder. Sorry Max you are grounded for life. But that did not stop him carrying out other jobs that needed to be done.

"President Bert also thanked greenkeeper Laurie Wood for his work and dedication to the maintenance of the green. Some non growth areas on the edge is cause for concern, but Laurie is more than hopeful it will stand up to the busy schedule that the winter months bring.

"All volunteers who came along during the week, would like to say a great big thank you to president Bert's wife, Desley, for the goodies she sent along for morning teas. Much appreciated by all.

Organisers want big trophy day WHITWORTH'S trophy day is on Sunday at Emu Park Bowls Club and organisers would like a full green for the event.

Nominations are invited from members and visitors for the mixed game, starting at 1.30pm. On Tuesday, April 28, the CQ Past Presidents visit Emu Park for an all men match at 1.30pm.

Members have completed another good week. The Easter social was well attended and members and friends enjoyed the music provided by local artists.

"Ella Lewis had us all tapping our feet to the lively tunes played on her accordian. Win and Stan Nelson were great and Alec Bacon was popular with some old favorites," publicity officer Marg Price said.

"The Farrow Kids made their debut and look like having a great future as entertainers. Em Clayton made his mouth organ talk. Mr Music Man, Jeff Sceney and his band, did a great job. They have something good going, if anyone wants a good four piece group. Thanks to Joy Clayton for loaning us her electronic organ for the night."

In ladies competitions, Kath Cliffe defeated Mavis Goltz. Mildred Rose defeated Bev Farrow in A singles.

In championship pairs Marje Wilson, Esme Johnson were too good for Mildred Rose, Marg Price.

In Men's B singles: Mery Lee defeated Basil Buttsworth. Bill Robinson defeated Col smith. Ron Holman d Jan Kunst. In mens club fours, Col Smith, Bob Maud, Col Rose started well and had a good lead over Ray Rout, Max Kilby, Allan Morton, Alan Price, but Alan's team fought back to win the game.

The men's club fours first semi final was an exciting game. Glen Kluver, Eddie Mann, Phil Cosgrove, Brian Heath started off as expected, and after eight ends the score was 12-0 in Brian's favour.

Arthur Atcheson, Karl Zettl, Keith Cruickshank, Harry McNamara made a late start, and struggled along to the 16th end, when the scores were then Brian 19, Harry 13. Harry and his team came good and won the next five ends (score now 22-19 in Harry's favour). The final score was Harry 24, Brian 22.

The second semi should be played this week between Lew Tickner's team and Alan Price's team.

"Patron Dick Brown is now home after a spell in hospital. Dick would be pleased to see anyone who can find the time to call in. It's good to see Clive (happy) Davison back on the green," she said.

Easter Sunday game was well attended for Easter egg trophies. There were a few close games and some big wins. George Cliffe and his team - Barbara Stewart and Clive Davison - played well for a 20 point win against Judi Armstrong, Allan Evans, Ted Jarreu.

51 AT Y.I.B.C. GAMES FIFTY-ONE players turned out for games director's morning at Yeppoon Indoor Bowling Club headquarters on Wednesday of last week.

Trophies for the morning were given by YIBC games director Vi Robson and split sixes were played.

In the top spot with a score of 31 points were Dulcie Locke, Thelma Legh and Elsie Kussrow.

Runners-up on 29 points were Tom Poole, Noreen Domeroy and Ruth Shields. Third place went to Adrian De Graaf, Evelyn Seeman, Harry Payne with 28 points.

Six raffles were held the first three for chocolates which went to Gladys Scott, Jean Whiteacre and Noreen Domeroy, with the other three were flowers which were won by Dulcie Locke and Noreen Domeroy.

Bill Roberts was in great touch to defeat Dick Sinclair 25-8; Eric Austin fmished far too strong over the last four ends for Arthur Atcheson and won 27-16.

District Pairs: Bill Roberts and Don Goody led George Cavanagh and Harry McNamara 19-9 after 13 ends, but what a thrilling game this turned out. George and Harry fought back to level at 21 all, on the last end, even after the extra end was played, the tape had to be used to decide a winner, which went in favour of Don and Bill by an eighth of an inch giving them the game 22-21.

This same pair did not fare so well in open fours as Arthur Atcheson, Jack Hoare, Keith Cruickshank and Harry McNamara had a comfortable win over G Cavanagh, W Roberts, B Atkinson and Don Goody 26-16.

B grade singles: Frank O'Brien poured on the power at the end to defeat Key Thompson 25-21, after a very close game; Peter Cowie in another close game defeated Lester Findlay 26-22, a great effort by Lester, as due to work commitments does not play very often, and Peter is an underated bowler with heaps of ability.

GLADSTONE was the venue for the Harbour City Sevens International rugby competition last weekend, when over 20 teams gathered to vie for over $10,000 in prizemoney and trophies.

Hamish Smith from Capcoast rugby 'Milan put together a team of enthusiastic, if relatively inexperienced players, and along with several supporters they journeyed south last Saturday morning to take part in what was to be a weekend of great football and easy comraderie.

The first day's play sorted the teams into divisions and Capcoast found itself in the running to contest division three.

After a night of hectic socialising, Sunday morning dawned bright and early. Although obviously too early for some and a little hesitant in the physical sense, the spirits were willing and Hamish rallied his troops to take on Mt Morgan in the first of the play off matches for the day.

Capcoast blitzed the opposition to take this match with a score of 50-10. This win put a lot of heart into the team and the game against Wide Bay 2 saw them winners again with a score of 24-0.

With a break until the fmals everyone settled in to watch some excellent rugby being played throughout the rest of the day. Dave Dixon and Brad Flynn performed well in the Golden Oldies match.

Sevens is a fast and exciting game and all matches provided some excellent rugby for the hundreds of spectators.

All to soon the fmals loomed and once again Hamish rallied his team together to play against Biloela.

The previous winning combination of Capcoast players worked well with the boys playing some classy football to bring the final score to 24-8, so taking out the third division prizemoney of $500 along with a silver plate. The money has been well spent and the plate is proudly displayed at sponsors, Honkers Nightclub.

Points scorers for Capcoast throughout the competition were: Tries, Hamish Smith 7, Anthony Aynsley 3, Josh O'Shea 3, Josh Belz 3, Chris Amedee 2, Graham Hennigar 1 and Sean Dungey 1. Conversions were kicked by Anthony Aynsley 8, Sean Dungey 4 and Josh O'Shea 2. The team voted Captain Hamish Smith as their player of the match and Hamish in turn commended all team members on their fine efforts throughout the competition.

This weekend Capcoast U/19s play at Rugby Park on Friday night and the A Grade match on Saturday night at 7pm also at Rugby Park.

Hitching his caravan to a star (or car) he headed north (where else from Victoria) and wound up spending six weeks at the Blue Dolphin Caravan Park. The moment he saw the Capricorn Coast he knew he had found his future but he headed further north to Townsville to make sure. Certain he had made the right decision he didn't even call in on the way back to Victoria. Cricket club presentation crowns year CAPRICORN Coast Cricket Club held its annual presentation night recently in the Yeppoon.

Showground and the night was well attended and supported by local cricket followers.

Rockhampton Cricket Association president George Cornwell attended, as did club patron Greg Simpson.

Although the club had an unsuccessful season on the field, there were many fine performances by individuals and these were acknowledged on presentation night.

-The following awards presented for each grade: batting award, first grade R Sheppard; second grade S Carte, third R Mackie. Bowling award: first K Ogilivie, second S Carte, third G Ward. Highest scoring innings: first R Sheppard, second S Baxter, third R Mackie. Most wickets in innings: first B Wright, second S Carte, third G Tamer. Most catches: first B Gough, second R Cox, third D May. Highest partnership: first R Sheppard and A Martin, second D Hancock and S Christie, third R Mackie and G Tanzer.

-Shop Locally off to a racing start SHOPPING LOCALLY got off to a racing start, literally, on Easter Monday when the Capricorn Coast Mirror-sponsored Shop LocallyBrian Gilligan Memorial Open Handicap was won by a Yeppoon-trained horse which came home in a new track record.

Johnnycake Girl, owned by John Quilty and trained by Alan Jenkinson, was ridden to victory over the 1100m. by leading jockey Mark Unwin in the record time of 1 minute 3.2 seconds taking 1.4 off the previous record.

Aside from the $3300, the owner won a dinner service made by Nob Creek Pottery ... a masterstroke of shopping locally for a trophy by Keppel Park committeeman Greg Simpson.

The five-event meeting in perfect racing weather attracted a crowd, described by club president John Millroy, as "the biggest the secretary has seen in years".

With bookies and the TAB fielding on Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast and Adelaide, as well as the Keppel Park races, the crowd had plenty of ways to pass the time.

The Shop Locally-Brian Gilligan Memorial Open Handicap was the feature race. It was partsponsored by the Mirror to promote the idea of shopping on the Coast to provide jobs for residents; The Capricorn Coast Chamber of Commerce of Industry is in the midst of planning a campaign to make residents more aware of the benefits of Shopping Locally ... and promoting a local racing event was a logical way to give it that racing start.

•• • EVER wondered why some people in business appear, shall we say, a little strange on occasions? Take the bloke with the far-off look in his eyes on Tuesday ... he'd been making up the pays for casual waitressing staff and he kept mumbling things that sounded like the formula needed to launch a rocket to Mars. When he calmed down over a cup of coffee he started talking about the three rates of pay he had been calculating. It turns out the normal rate of pay for a casual waitress (er, waitperson, and that's the fair dinkum name!) is time:and-a-half or $11.94 an hour. It's time-and-a-half because it's casual and the pay includes allowances for holiday pay and so on. OK, so that rate applied to wages earned Monday to Maundy Thursday. But the rate changed to $19.97 an hour for Good Friday and Easter Saturday. They were double-timeand-a-half shifts. Easter Sunday, however, was a double-time shift so the hourly rate was $15.97 ... and, of course, each casual staff member (you couldn't say waitperson!) worked a different number of hours on only some of the days or perhaps all of them ... and now comes Anzac Day, Labour Day and Queen's Birthday!!!

•• • KID watching The Ten Commandments on Easter Sunday turned to parents in one of the seemingly endless commercial breaks and remarked ponderously: "It's 'a timeless film, isn't it?" Watch out Bill Collins ... you too can b replaced!
