Station master confident no staff will be lost at Yeppoon w By RHETT WATSON STATION MAS I ER Rod Maher is confident Yeppoon Railway Station will retain its present staff after results of a State Government review, now under way, are known. "Although we have had no official reply as yet, I am confident the staff will remain the same and that there will be no line closure," Mr Maher said. Member for Peak Down Vince Lester said. this week Yeppoon Railway Station lost a man to the Gladstone Railway Station six months ago and he was not replaced. The station has been involved in controversy for the past fewyears. In the lead up to the December, 1989, State election, then ALP candidate for Broadsound (and now Member) Jim Pearce said: "The present government (National Party) will continue with its policy of closing branch lines after the election, and that includes Yeppoon. "Of course Mr Hinton (then Member) will deny it ... just like he stated the decision not to introduce daylight saving was rock solid and would not be compromised." Mr Pearce said then an important part of his plan for Broadsound was transport. He had hopes of a road link with the Bruce Highway in the north. "I want to see the Railway service maintained. I want to see a passenger service reintroduced, linking the new electric passenger service from Brisbane to Yeppoon," he said. "I want to see the current railway station developed into a multi-purpose transit centre with facilities where inter-city coaches can deliver passengers. This will happen when we have the road link with the north." Since the Labor Party came to power after the election, allegations have been made of the railway station eventually being closed. The latest are from National Party Member for Peak Downs Vince Lester. "I am concerned there is a hidden agenda with the door-to-door delivery of goods unloaded off the rail in Rockhampton and delivered to Yeppoon business houses, totally bypassing the local railway station," Mr Lester said in November last year. This week, in a press release, Mr Lester said: "I understand that currently their staffing levels will remain as is. However there is to be a further review in some six months."

No seconder for motion to have council meet at night

• ABOVE: Transport Minister David Hamill and Memberfor Broadsound JimPearce were pictured in front of the Yeppoon Railway Station in March, 1991. At that time, Mr Hamill reiterated his government's promise not to remove Yeppoon's railway service. "Bit by bit they ( the government) are grinding away at the stability of the Rockhampton/ Yeppoon line and we need assurances now that this rot will stop," Mr Lester said. Transport Minister David Hamill visited Yeppoon in March last year and reiterated his government's promise "not to remove Yeppoon's railway service". This week Mr Hamill said there was to be a review of staff numbers at Queensland's small railway stations ... including Yeppoon's. Member for Broadsound Jim Pearce said on Wednesday, when contacted by the Capricorn Coast Mirror, this was the first he had heard about any review of the staff numbers at the Yeppoon Railway Station. "I can't comment on anything I haven't been briefed on but I am flying to Brisbane tomorrow (Thursday) and will talk to the Transport Minister (David Hamill)," he said.

Clean up for Tidy Town judging CLEAN up your yards ... Tidy Town judges will be in the area within the next four weeks. Livingstone Shire chairman Cr Barbara Wildin said council was endeavouring to ensure that the area's streets and parks were tidy. "We have had some warning this time, so armed with this knowledge, I encourage everyone to attempt to keep their properties tidy," Cr Wildin said. "It is difficult at this time of the year to keep up with the mowing, but, if we all tried at the same time, maybe we could receive a commendation from Tidy Towns."

A MOTION to hold Livingstone Shire Council meetings at night lapsed through want of a seconder at the January meeting. Cr Kim Shields moved a motion at Tuesday's meeting that perhaps future meetings could be held in the evening so that ratepayers would be able to attend. Chairman Cr Barbara Wildin asked for a seconder but it lapsed because none of the other 11 councillors offered to second it. Some of the councillors - amid laughter said "you must be joking, why would we want to have them at night?". "I thought you would have been interested in having our meetings changed to nights, as you work," Cr Shields said to Cr Lloyd Webber who was also laughing. "I like our meetings as they are. This is my rest period from work," Cr Webber said. Cr Wildin was the only councillor to say Cr Shields' idea was interesting and that it should be looked into. On Wednesday night Cr Shields said he would rather have the meetings start at 4pm on Tuesdays, continuing through to 10.30pm. "I thought the latest the meeting should go to would be 10.30pm, to allowworking ratepayers to attend as observers of the collective processes in decision-making by their elected representatives," he said. "I believe the need for detailed open debates in all forums of government is increasing each year. Making council meetings more accessible partly fulfills our obligation to that need. "I further believe those councillors with an interest in their constituents should have no problem in organising council meetings to meet public interest and convenience," he said.

Better to collect goods from rail station than have door-to-door delivery YEPPOON District Co-operative manager Graeme Bulley said this week that it was easier to collect goods from Yeppoon Railway Station rather than having them delivered doorto-door by Q-Link. "It is much better for us to collect our goods when we can fit it in with our work day and not when Q-Link want us to collect them," Mr Bulley said. "I believe the railway station is an asset to the town."

Yeppoon Tackle and sports owner Brian Fuller said this week he collected all his goods, which aren't free in the store, from the Yeppoon Railway Station. "I am absolutely dead against having goods delivered door-to-door," Mr Fuller said. "I have three reasons for having them delivered by the Yeppoon Railway station. "One is that any accounting problems can be easily sorted out with the staff on hand at the railway station rather than over the phone to

Rockhampton. "The second is that it is much cheaper and easier for me to eitherwalk or drive over to the station and pick up my goods myself rather than having to deal with delivery people when I have customers. "The third is that I don't want to see the railway line closed because it is an asset to the town and the more I have parcels delivered through them the more chances there are of keeping the station open and keeping some

people in a job. "If more business houses collected their goods from the Yeppoon Railway Station instead of having them delivered from Rockhampton Railway Station we would have a better chance of keeping our station at it's present status or even having it upgraded," he said. Yeppoon Fruitgrowers' Association chairman Dave Vaughan said this week he had • CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
