Denhams to discount basics for pensioners SENIOR citizens will be rewarded for shopping locally on Thursday when Denhams Supermarket offers specials available only on production of the aged Pensioner's Health B enefit Card. Manager Ron Iafrati said he recognised the pensioners as a large market on the Capricorn Coast and was aware many automatically shopped locally and kept their money in town. "It seemed logical that the dinkum pensioners, who sometimes found it a bit hard to put a few bob away for Christmas, deserved a treat.

After all, it is Christmas," he said. The result is a genuine lowering of prices on household staples such as tea, sugar, bread, sausages and possibly butter and a few other lines. Mr Iafrati said he had been tossing this idea around for quite a while and there were pitfalls that he hoped could be avoided. "I am aiming this at genuine pensioners and I would not like to see the offer abused," he said. "The prices will definitely be lower and they

will only be available to pensioners ... and I certainly don't want pensioners buying the specials for relatives or mates who don't qualify." Mr Iafrati looked for expert advice when putting together the final proposal to be offered to Coast pensioners ... he called on Yeppoon Pensioners' League president Bill Shuttlewood who was pushing a trolley around the supermarket at the time. During a discussion between fresh vegetables and a biscuit promotion stall, the odds and

ends were sorted out. Bill Shuttlewood reckoned pensioners would like to get discounted tea, sugar and bread. He liked the idea of butter being on the list but he realised a lot of pensioners preferred margarine. Coffee was in the same category. It became obvious it wasn't going to be easy to discount staples that would suit all tastes. Mr Iafrati had been toying with the idea of making up a 'pensioner pack' but including butter • CONTINUED ON PAGE 13

LIVINGSTONE Shire Council has slashed its charges by $27,000 to try to make sure Kentucky Fried Chicken opens at Yeppoon. Council will now charge the corporation $9000 for parking arrangements instead of $36,000 - a 75 percent reduction. Council decided at its November 10-11 meeting that Kentucky Fried should pay $36,000 as a parking surcharge to open its sit-down and takeaway at the corner of Adelaide and Normanby Streets in premises now occupied by Bill Thomson Real Estate. The $36,000, based on eight car spaces, would be used to create efficient legal pedestrian access to and from the Kentucky Fried shop and for parking bays. Kentucky Fried Chicken consultants, Kinhill Cameron McNamara, told council the $36,000 cash-in-lieu payment should be reduced because Chirpy Chick operated there several years ago. At a special council meeting on November 26, Shire chairman Cr Barbara Wildin said nobody could find council's Chirpy Chick file. "And we didn't impose any parking space fees on Big Rooster across the street," Cr Wildin said. "Because of this, I don't think we can justify the parking charges ($36,000) for Kentucky Fried. "I don't think we charged anything for parking on the previous business in the area they want. "I don't think it's an ideal situation for a Kentucky Fried sit-down and takeaway ... but I think we can justify two parking spaces, not eight." Council said it needed details from Kentucky Fried about truck servicing arrangements, and the council still had to consider plans for pedestrian safety near the proposed takeaway.
