Yeppoon Police will give talks on illegal drugs use EDUCATION is the best way people can help lower the availability and illicit use of drugs in the community, Yeppoon Police officer-in-charge Sgt lc Ken Tanzer said. "There are many people in the community who don't know what some drugs look like. They don't know if their children or friends are using them and it is time they were educated," Sgt Tanzer said. To assist in the education process, Yeppoon Police and the Capricorn Coast Mirror have designated July 21 to August 19, Capricorn Coast Drug Awareness Month. "July21 to 27 is Drug Awareness Week and we decided to continue the education for a month. Police will be available to talk to organisations during that time, but I must have an idea of who wants the talks and when," he said. "Any organisation who would like a talk on the illegal use of drugs, can contact the Police Station, 39 1400, before July 19, so times and officers can be co-ordinated where possible. "We may have difficulty in providing officers if every organisation wants a guest speaker, but with co-operation, may be able to keep everyone happy." Sgt Tanzer said the offer was not just for adult organisations, youth groups were wel-

"Alcohol can be smelt on people's breath, but many parents don't know if their children are using drugs and they need to be educated to know what to look for. "Police aren't just boogey men to be frightened of ... we can help you with your problems and it is confidential if that is the way you want it," he said.

"We are primarily a community service group and one of our projects is the annual `medi-drop' when people have a chance to dispose of unwanted and unused prescription drugs and poisons," Mr Alexander said. "It takes a bit of organisation and we have to obey certain guidelines when collecting these items. They have to be disposed of in a certain way and under strict supervision."

come to inquire about a guest speaker. "The first education night is at the Capricorn Cinema on Monday, July 22 when police officers and representatives from the medical and legal professions will be available to answer questions," he said. "Drugs are only part of the problem. What changes happen to your body? How do you cope with a member of your family if he/she is using illicit drugs? How much is it going to cost if you have to go to court? What are the penalties for having illicit drugs on you, in your car or home? "There will be material and information posters available as well as the speakers," Sgt Tanzer said. "We won't be focussing just on illicit drugs like marijuana, prescription drugs can be used illegally and alcohol is also useSillegally.

"The night at the Capricorn Cinema will have a question and answer time. There will also be an opportunity for written questions, unsigned if necessary, to be asked. A box will be provided for that purpose." A further education night will be held on Monday, August 19, probably in the form of a drug awareness film. These nights are not just for adults, young people are welcome. Yeppoon Lions Club will also use the month for the annual collection of drugs and poisons. The collection dates and places will be notified later. Organiser Glen Alexander said the Lions Club usually had its `rnedi-drop' later in the year, but decided to move it forward to take advantage of the joint Yeppoon Police-Capricorn Coast Mirror drug education month.

YEPPOON Meals on Wheels is facing a crisis. It must find a new kitchen - or food for the frail, disabled and elderly may end. Meals on Wheels has been producing its food from kitchens at Yeppoon's St Vincent de Paul premises in Mary Street. But the St Vincent de Paul organisation is planning to sell its premises when the society finalises its plans to move to the old Sacred Heart building at the corner of Arthur and John streets. Member for Broadsound Jim Pearce said Meals on Wheels needed help urgently. The hunt for land or special premises for a kitchen was under way, with inquiries to Queensland Railways and research by Livingstone Shire Council. Mr Pearce said Meals on Wheels must be helped in every way to overcome its problem because of its important role maintaining the quality of life for people in need. "The number of elderly in Yeppoon continues growing and the tough economic environment means more people need the service. "Food tailored to specific needs in our community, has the support of many volunteers rostered to deliver meals right across Yeppoon." He said he'd approached Queensldlid Rail for a small block. of land near the Yeppoon goods shed. "I've asked them to make the land available for Meals on Wheels or give them a lease. "Buying the land is out of the question as Meals on Wheels is a non-profit organisation and just doesn't have the funds." Mr Pearce said he understood Livingstone Shire Council was also investigating land for construction of a kitchen. "It's going to be difficult because the new facilities must, if possible, be central to the Yeppoon shopping areas." He said community service clubs would be asked to help with the funding and construction of the kitchen. He would also be pressing the State Government for a grant to help Meals on Wheels. "Meantime, any land owner interested in making land available close to the town centre should contact my office."

St Christopher's service Sunday EVERY year on the Sunday closest to American Independence Day (July 4) a remembrance service is held at St Christopher's Chapel near the meatworks at Nerimbera. This chapel has been included on the National Estate register administered by the Australian Heritage Commission. Livingstone Shire Council invites everyone to attend this year's service on Sunday July 7 at 3pm. It will be conducted by Anglican Rev Tom Rogers and the address will be given by Major Sam Hassall, officer commanding the army's district support unit at Rockhampton: Rockhampton's Salvation Army band will provide the music and the flag ceremony will be conducted by a scout group.
