CAPRICORN COAST Chamber of Commerce and Industry president John Jackson said this week he would call on members at Tuesday night's meeting to write to Police Minister Terry Mackenroth seeking more protection for Yeppoon. His action follows last week's Capricorn Coast Mirror page one story highlighting the increased amount of theft on the Coast. Mr Jackson said 105 robberies in 120 days was evidence that crime was getting beyond the control of the number of police stationed at Yeppoon. "No-one is criticising the police," Mr Jackson said. "They can only do so much. If the amount of crime is increasing it follows that the number of police must also increase." He said the problems with undermanning at Yeppoon Police Station had not suddenly become serious ... "the need for increased police numbers had been an election issue throughout last year".

Last year, then Member for Broadsound Denis Hinton had claimed construction works planned for the police station, and allocation of two police trainees, as proof of the National Party's concern. Then candidate and now Member for Broadsound Jim Pearce criticised Mr Hinton's statements. On October 27 last year, Mr Pearce said: "If the best he can come up with is two police trainees in a marginal seat two months before an election it's little wonder the electorate is embracing the Labor Party's policies on police staffing. "Opposition leader (now Premier) Wayne Goss has categorically stated Ycppoon will have a 24-hour-a-day police service once he becomes Premier. "He made this statement not eight weeks before an election but many months before, when he arranged for ALP Police spokesman

Terry Mackenroth (now Police Minister) not to issue a press release but to personally visit Yeppoon Police Station earlier this year." Mr Pearce said at the time these visits were "not election gimmicks". "They were a sincere attempt to sec how the National Party was performing because the party is notorious for pork-barrelling in marginal seats. "They (Mr Goss and Mr Mackcnroth) were amazed that such a serious issue as public safety was literally going to be white-washed with a coat of paint (the police station extensions and painting) rather than giving something solid to the community." Mr Jackson said late last year then Police Minister Vince Lester had visited Yeppoon as part of a State-wide familiarising tour. "Mr Lester criticised the ALP's promise of a 24-hour police service then countered with the offer of a 24-hour service on weekends," Mr Jackson said. • CONTINUED ON PAGE 4
