EMU PARK'S sewerage treatment works will now be sited on part of the golf course area at an additional cost of about $100,000 ... and Livingstone Shire chairman Cr John Bowen said work would start in April.

Detailed plans showing the. new site will be displayed at Emu Park and advertised so that residents can see the complete proposal.

The decision on the new site was subject to negotiations now underway with Emu Park Golf Club and the plans being put on public display.

However it does not seem likely council will entertain seeking yet another site even if there are objections. Before it could adopt the new site, council had to rescind the decision made last year to put the treatment works on the sanitary reserve.

Once that was rescinded, the new site was moved and seconded by division one councillors Lloyd Webber and Duncan McDonald.

Division three's Cr Key Hinz, when discussing the plans being put on display, said he had a question. He asked what council proposed doing if it advertised the new site and there was opposition. "What do we do then?" he said. No-one answered.

The April start of works will be followed about a year later by the first connection in the town area.

Definite costings are not available as yet although Cr Bowen said the sewerage project would probably cost about the same as the $4.6 million original estimate.

There had been savings in some areas and increases in others. One saving involved buying second-hand plant from the Gold Coast City Council. An increase would be the new site on golf course land.

Cr Bowen said council had a $2 million interest-free loan for the project from the State Government which it could draw against. As work progresses and that amount is used council will then use other loans.

Negotiations are in progress with Emu Park Golf Club executives about the site. On the one hand, the club will be losing land but, on the other hand, will be offered water from the treatment plant to create "lush" fairways.

A letter to council from club president Ritchie Robinson hardly enthuses over the prospect of losifig land but the club announced it was investigating an additional nine holes for the course.

In his letter, Mr Robinson said: "We ... feel that we have to accept a facility rejected by the residents of Emu Park on previous preferred sites and relinquish part of our lease for a sewerage treatment plant.

"While we all agree that the effluent water would greatly benefit our course and, in time, attract more members, the odour emitted from such plant drifting over our course and facilities, with the prevailing wind, would offend some members."

12,000 population by year 2032 ANYONE contemplating moving away from Emu Park should it become crowded has about 40 years to plan the move ... council was told this week the area's population would not reach 12,000 until the year 2032.

This was revealed in a report on the site for Emu Park's proposed treatment plant. The site is large enough for construction of a plant capable of handling a population of 12,000.

"At current growth patterns, this design horizon is not expected to be reached until 2032," the report said.

The site is further from the township of Emu Park than the previously considered site and establishment of access roads, water and

sewer rising mains will cost more.

The report said these extra costs had been budgeted when the scheme was considered.

In a discussion of the site's aesthetics, the report said native trees were about five metres high ... "as such, these will form a perfect buffer for the package treatment plant which stands 4.1 metres high".

The report continued: "The lagoon site, initially, will have no vegetative buffer. Once constructed, it can be planted with flora that will provide camouflage to the site.

"Further, it is considered that the lagoon will be no more unsightly than the existing salt flats."

charge and council had approval to discharge it into Caw arral Creek.

Council must dispose of the effluent and it can supply the golf course with a minimum of 450k1 a day when all of Emu Park is connected to the sewerage scheme.

The report said it was considered it would be supplied free of all pumping, electrical and maintenance costs to the top of the hill adjacent to the proposed treatment plant site.

"While it is also considered that while some land forfeiture is to be made by the golf club (4.4ha out of 58.3ha), a financial benefit will be made by having lush fairways, greens and trees all year round," the report said.

"As such, a contribution toward the sprinkling system should be made by the Emu Park Golf Club. The amount of the contribution could probebly be on a 50-50 basis."

The report said that, at this stage, effluent supply to the Zilzie Golf Club would appear to be impractical.

No easy answer for councillors facing complaint over bicycles THERE was no easy answer to a complaint from a James Street businesswoman that fun parlour patrons were dropping their bicycles on the footpath in front of her shop.

Treasure Trove owner Edna Thring wrote to council asking it to do something about the problem. Councillors had a recommendation before them suggesting they advise Mrs Thring her complaint would be referred to the police but this was discarded at rust in favour of a motion to install a bike rack.

That looked like being passed until a councillor said it had to be sited on the road, eliminating one parking space. The discussion then turned to a variety of sites, on the road and footpath.

Mrs Thring complained that children, both male and female, abused her and swore at her when she asked them to put their bicycles in the gutter.

In her January 10 letter, she said she had, that day, called the police "concerning the two youths involved".

She said a police officer had spoken to the boys about the bikes and swearing "but then the officer said to me 'that I don't own the footpath'."

"I am trying to run a business here in Yeppoon and it is hard enough when our local people won't shop here in Yeppoon without having to wade through and jump over bicycles on footpaths," she said.

She said she knew of elderly people who had broken arms after falling over bicycles and skateboards but nothing seems to have been done about the matter.

She had turned to council "to do something without hesitation".

A report to council said the matter was unable to be attended to by council because control came under the Traffic Act, administered by police.

Cr Bowen said when he had a look at the problem there were nine bikes there and he sug-

gested a bike rack be installed. This was moved and seconded by Crs Dorey and John Dowie.

They suggested it should be placed directly in front of the fun parlour but Cr Roy Wall said the rack could not be put on the path, it had to be put on the road.

He moved an amendment that it be put in the centre parking strip then Cr Dorey suggested it be placed in the No Parking zone near Woody's.

Cr Bowen said council could hardly be expected to put bicycles in a "$6000 parking space".

Cr Wall countered that the space was worth $3500 ... "that's what we're charging for them," he said.

Cr Bowen came back with his $6000 claim saying "that's what they're worth".

He closed the debate by saying that council, rather than be seen to be back-pedalling on the problem, should have the parks and recreation committee look at the site with an engineer and make a decision on the bike rack site next month.

Pearce touring Coast schools •

MEMBER for Broadsound Jim Pearce is visiting schools in the electorate to see what facilities they need, if any.

He has visited Byfield, Farnborough, Cawarral, Keppel Sands and Emu Park primary schools.

Mr Pearce said he spoke to teachers, pupils and parents and citizens' association representatives.

He said he was disappointed with some of the conditions that the school staffs and pupils have to endure.

"Male and female teachers sharing the same toilet facilities, small and cramped staff rooms and unsuitable living accommodation are just just some of the problems," Mr Pearce said.

"Consideration must be given to providing good quality classrooms, undercover areas and school surrounds but we cannot forget the teachers who do the work.

"Because of the distances travelled by students to their various schools, transportation also seems to be a problem.

"Some children are travelling in dangerous conditions and others are having trouble with the 'system' because of some of the bureaucratic rules," he said.

Mr Pearce said he would be reporting to the Education Department for an initial response to the problems he had noted.

He also attended the induction of Yeppoon State High School leader and spoke to year 8 St Brendan's College students on Thursday.

Today, Friday, he visits Dysart State High School for its induction, Dysart State Primary, Middlemount State High, Middlemount State Primary and Mackenzie River State Primary.

"I have visited most of the schools in my electorate and intend to see the rest as soon as possible," Mr Pearce said.

"I think it is important to make sure each school, its teachers, students and parents are not working in sub-standard buildings. These children are our future and we have to care for their education.

"It is sometimes hard to find work in a chosen field and the least we, as parents and government, can do is make sure our children learn in suitable surroundings."

No stinger signs A STINGER sign won't be erected at the B angalee Beach access until the next financial year.

Cr Brian Dorey had asked at the January council meeting for one to be erected if it was available.

A report to council this month said only one sign was available and it was being retained in case of vandalism to existing signs.

Erection of stinger signs will be considered in the next budget. Cr Glenda Mather asked that council get the full wording for the next signs to be erected.

Richardson gives green light to Shoalwater Bay sand mine FEDERAL Env ironment M Mister Senator Graham Richardson has cleared the way for a $4 billion (over the life of the project) mineral sands and mining industry for the Capricorn Coast ... but the Coast's involvement has been reduced to a minimum, probably because of successful objections.

In a Press release received on Wednesday night, it was announced the Pivot Group Ltd proposed to use mineral sands from the Shoalwater military training area as the basis for a new industry in the State's largest industrial city, Gladstone.

The Pivot Press release said the company would invest $155 midion in the mining and processing venture which would see the construction of a dry mill and a synthetic rutile plant in the port city.

Pivot Group managing director Peter Searson said the project would create about 410 jobs and an important new minerals processing industry for Australia.

Those jobs, and the investment, had originally been proposed for Yeppoon. The dry mill was to have been built on the outskirts of Yeppoon and the company had been negotiating with Livingstone Shire Council about provision of sealed roads.

In the December 16, 1988, Capricorn Coast Mirror, a company spokesman said the proposed mining project would be based in Yeppoon with about 12 executives moving here with their families and would be buying homes.

The week before, Member for Capricomia Keith Wright had announced the project in the Mirror saying if it went ahead, the project would create dozens of jobs for the "Central Queensl and reg ion generally, but the Capricorn Coast specifically".

The announcement detailed the benefits for the Capricorn Coast and the Mirror carried details of the drawbacks.

The benefits included creation of 89 direct jobs and 136 indirect, with a flow-on of job opportunities throughout the region.

The dry mill to be built provided one of the major drawbacks because Yeppoon people would have had to get used to 25-tonne trucks carting material to and from Yeppoon.

The project copped a barrage of objections to the damage that was expected to occur to the environment.

Conservationists were united against the project. Company environmental impact statements received sufficient objections to apparently stop the mined material being carted by road but it seems those objections have not stopped the project.

It is obvious from Wednesday night's Press release that Yeppoon now need have no fears of trucks ... the dry mill will be built in Gladstone and the materials will be barged to it.

A Pivot spokesman said the Federal Government's conditions announced by Senator Richardson include:

• No mining off frontal sand dunes.

• Heavy equipment and fuel must be barged into the mine site by sea and the mineral product is to be barged out.

• Any areas found during further exploration such as rainforest, rare and endangered flora and fauna, areas of Aboriginal cultural and heritage significance are all to be protected, with the dredge path avoiding these areas.

• The establishment of an environmental plan.

• Rehabilitation to be of the highest standard and approved by the CSIRO. The Press release said Pivot's proposal to barge the heavy mineral to Gladstone was aimed at overcoming objections to its original plan to truck them to a dry mill near Yeppoon.

"Strong objections from the residents of Byfield to this proposal resulted in the company finding the barge alternative to satisfy residents' concern," Mr Searson said.

A Pivot spokesman said that while the dry mill and secondary processing plants at Gladstone would create the majority of jobs involved in the project, a significant number of job opportunities would still be available for Capricorn Coast residents in both the actual mining, supply, and rehabilitation of the mine project.

The spokesman said the company was totally committed to both the mining and synthetic rutile processing stages of the development.

However, the value-adding process could be greatly expanded with two further stages — the first involving the establishment of a titanian dioxide pigment plant, and then a titanium metal plant.

The complete value-added process would involve a capital investment of about $600 million, the creation of about 1500 jobs, and export income of about $470 million a year.

He said these projections had been confirmed as accurate by the Federal Government Department of Industry, Technology and Commerce.

`Mind-blowing decision is election hype' LIVINGSTONE Shire chairman Cr John Bowen said he had not studied the facts on Senator Richardson's announcement because nothing had been sent to the council.

Late on Wednesday night he said he found it unfortunate that the Federal Government, to his knowledge, had never contacted any group locally about the project.

Council still did not know what protection was being offered to the Capricorn Coast's water source.

"The present water pumping hardware, if it had to be moved to take water from the Fitzroy River, would cost more than $50 million to change," Cr Bowen said.

There had been no information produced to show that the company had carried out an extensive study that was necessary to prove the protection of the Coasts' water resource.

"In fact, we have had no communication with anyone on any matter regarding the mining other than the public notices," Cr Bowen said.

He did not believe Canberra was any more interested in the people than Moscow.

"The statements coming now (this week's story) about the total worth of the mine and the revenue to be generated is now vastly more than was first disclosed by the company," he said.

"I wonder if the truth will ever be found between now and the next 20 years. With two such conflicting stories, (the original announcement and this week's) one or both must be wrong. I wonder how many years it willtake us to find out the truth.

"This one is mind-blowing and election hype.

If the mining company is interested in discrediting my statement, it's only fair to the people of this area that the government sees to it that they produce an independent study and analysis of the proposition."

Dog obedience classes start Tuesday for all types of pets DOG Obedience beginners class starts on Tuesday, February 27 at Cooee Park.

The classes will be held each Tuesday from 8pm to 9pm for eight weeks for dogs from six months.to any age. All dogs whether pedigreed or of the mixed type are eligible.

Childien should be of an age and size to control their dog.

Each owner should have a leather leash and choker, if they don't, both are available for purchase from the instructor.

Beginners may start the course on either the first or second week.

Singing Ship Wishing Well pays jackpot...something to sing about THOSE coins placed in the Singing Ship Wishing Well for the past 20 years paid off this week when one wish paid off with a jackpot ... replacement of the acoustic pipes will be paid for from an accumulated fund totalling more than $16,000.

Cr Duncan McDonald was moving the motion to pay for the repairs, expecting to have to find about $900, when he asked how much was sitting in the wishing well returns.

When shire clerk Jim Brown said there was $16,000 in the Singing Ship Trust Account, Cr McDonald upgraded his restoration plans from $900 to $2000.

Acoustic designer of the pipework George Cain and Cr McDonald, together with council's works engineer, recently inspected the Singing Ship and discussed refurbishing it.

The inspection followed complaints concern-

ing the reduced performance. Mr Cain advised the pipes had suffered damage from vandalism and the weather.

They were due for replacement after 20 years of service. He was also concerned that the cable holding the pipes in place was corroded to such an extent that it may break in high wind.

Because a cherry picker was required for further inspection work, it was considered that replacement of the pipes and cables should be allowed for, based on the previous inspection.

Council was told Mr Cain had offered his time, free of charge. The work was estimated to cost $900.

After successfully moving for $2000 to be voted for the work, Cr McDonald said Mr Cain hoped to have the pipes singing better than when established for the Captain Cook Bicentenary in 1970.

Army charity run hopes to top $2500 THE Army's annual charity run t o celebrate its 89th birthday is on March 1.

Rockhampton District Support Unit soldiers will run in pairs leaving from Yeppoon beachfront at 7am and arriving at the Rockhampton Mall by noon.

Each team member will run a total of 10 kilometres in four legs.

Local businesses are being canvassed to support the charity run. Rockhampton district Legacy, War Widows and the Bush Children's Home are the benefiting charities.

A cake will be cut - to celebrate the birthday - and then cheques will be presented to the charities.

"Livingstone Shire chairman Cr John Bowen has been asked to start the runners in Yeppoon and Rockhampton Mayor Ald Jim Webber will welcome them at the mall," District Support Unit commander Major Geoff Davis said.

Last year $2500, donated by businesses and members of the public, was given to local charities and Major Davis said the Army hoped

to top that figure this year.

Donations may be left with Roy Savage at Yeppoon Shells and Gifts, Normanby Street, he has an authorised receipt book.

Council told it could be cheaper to move crocs than seal road LIVINGSTONE Shire councillors were told this week it could be cheaper to relocate Koorana Crocodile Farm than to seal Coowonga Road.

Before them was a petition signed by 1133 people between December 30 and January 22 asking council to give Coowonga Road increased maintenance in the short term and upgrading and sealing in the immediate future.

In a report on the petition, councillors were told of the 1133 signatures, only seven were from Coowonga Road residents.

"It would seem that a significant amount of tie traffic could be attributed to the tourist facility," the report said. "(Croc farm owner) John Lever has suggested that at this stage, he wants increased frequency of maintenance, especially prior to tourist periods."

The report said while the tourist image would be improved, the use of funds at a time when it may not be fully warranted, would result in local residents (following a tourist season) having to accept a poor road standard until further funds were available.

"The cost of upgrading the Coowonga Road to a bitumen sealed standard to the crocodile farm would be in the order of $800,000," the report said.

It was recommended Mr Lever be advised, ob behalf of the petitioners, that "council regrets that it does not have sufficient funds to increase the maintenance or to undertake upgrading of Coowonga Road at this stage but it will consider the timing of the maintenance works in future.

Cr Mike Prior moved the recommendation subject to it ending after the word "stage" and deleting "but it will consider ... availability of funding" Cr Lloyd Webber foreshadowed a motion that included advice to Mr Lever that council had made and would continue to make representations to the State. Cr Duncan McDonald said former Member for Broadsound Denis Hinton had said council could get $100,000 for the work but it would have to match that amount ... "there's no way we could match $100,000 in division one," he said.

Shire chairman Cr John Bowen said he agreed that council could not match the amount but when the numbers who visited the croc farm were considered, the work might be possible if Mr Lever imposed a road levy on tourists.

Cr McDonald said Mr Lever had told Emu Park Chamber of Commerce that he had 40,000 tourists a year ... "let him put a levy on tourists".

He closed the debate saying Coowonga Road resident had not signed the petition ... "they're happy".

New centre manager THE Capricorn Coast's information centre has taken another step forward with the appointment of Kevin Mowberry as the centre's manager.

Capricorn Coast Tourist Organisation chairman Brian Hooper said Kevin would be responsible for the total centre operation.

"His duties range from supervision of volunteer staffing, including the duty rosters, to opening and closing the centre daily," Mr Hooper said.

"Hewill alsowork closelywith CCTO treasurer Ruth Rose in handling the centre's finances. He will liaise with CCTO members, volunteers and visitors.

CAPRICORN Coast mini rugby union starts its 1990 season on Saturday, March 17 with a sign-on at Cooee Park sports field.

The Capricorn Coast Rugby Club successfully entered an under 8 side in the Rockhampton and District competition last year.

The young team was awarded the trophy for the most improved team in the district after finishing third in the six team competition.

Mini-rugby introduces the game of rugby union, to primary school age children. It is played on a reduced size field under simplified rules.

Emphasis is on skill, development and enjoyment. CapCoast Rugby Club hopes to field sides in the under-8 and under 10 divisions this year.

Co-ordinator Michael Bongers is confident Coast will field two sides this year.

"Most of last year's squad move into the under 10 division this year. Two boys are still under 8 so they will be hoping a group of younger players come along to bolster numbers," Mr Bongers said.

"Boys born in 1982 and 1983 are eligible for under 8 and boys born in 1980 and 1981 can play under 10 division."

Introductory games will follow the sign-on.

Regular Saturday morning games start after Easter.

The annual father and son camp will again be held at the Queensland Recreational Council camp.

THIRTY-SIX bowlers played social mixed bowls at Emu Park Bowls Club on Sunday.

"Numbers are less than is usual at this time of the year," publicity officer Marg Price. "It is because of the hot weather we are experiencing.

"It's a pity because we have plenty of shade and the clubhouse is airy and comfortable. It is amazing what a game of bowls can do when the weather is hot.

"People can forget their problems for about four hours, concentrate of that 'toucher', maybe have a pat on the back from the skip for a job well done and relax after with a beer or soft drink," she said.

A number of players struggled to find form and fitness after. the Christmas break.

Subsequently, many matches went the full five games and some players took to the pool after the long, hot games.

Match of the week was played between Gavin Kime and Kevin Allery who battled it out with each other in a close tussle from start to finish.

Taranganba soon to be official TARANGANBA residents will soon become official ... the name will be adopted officially for the residential area.

Queensland surveyor-general K J Davies told Livingstone Shire Council by letter this week his attention had been drawn to the name Taranganba which had been in use for some years in Yeppoon.

"Although the name is not an approved name within the meaning of the Queensland Place Names Act 1988, long-established popular useage and its historical link with the early development of Yeppoon suggest that Taranganba should be recognised officially," he said.

He asked whether council would agree to having the name adopted in accordance with the Act. A suggestion for the boundaries of the area

$500 TO OGMORE TENNIS CLUB OGMORE Tennis Club will be given help in resurfacing its court after Cr Ellen Cogill went against a recommendation and won $500 cash plus backhoe and truck work from council.

Club secretary K J Diefenbach wrote to council asking it to consider the request from Ogmore State School Parents and Citizens' Association to reconstruct and resurface the tennis court in the school grounds.

The court is the only one in Ogmore and the 20-member tennis club play a night several times a week. Others also hire the court through the club.

The court is available to any resident during the day with the school principal's permission.

In areport on the request, councillors were told the parents and citizens' association had been told it would cost $5000 to repave and seal the court.

This cost would be subject to work being carried out in conjunction with resealing Ogmore town streets. No funding had been allocated and the courts were on Education Department land.

"Perhaps the State Government may be able to assist with the project," the report said.

Haywood's request, inspected the site and recommended the dam's construction to the then* Conservation Minister Rob Borbidge.

I had earlier ensured that an environmental impact statement had been prepared by the department. This was completed with the EIS supporting the dam's construction.

I subsequently took a deputation from Mr Haywood to Mr Borbidge when Cabinet met in North Queensland during the election campaign.

Mr Haywood was assured of the Government's support. However, it was explained to Mr Haywood that it would be imprudent to approve the application in the last weeks of an election campaign when the Government has a caretaking role and should not proceed with major or controversial policy decisions.

The truth is Mr Pearce has failed in his first test as Member for Broadsound.

Instead of standing up for his electorate, he meekly accepted Mr Comben's decision and initially echoes it in the electorate.

When Mr Pearce subsequently found the decision was unpopular, he reversed this position but was not prepared to 'take on' his Minister.

He was as stated in last week's Mirror dealt a `crushing defeat' and took it without a whimper.

I would hope that Mr Pearce will now take a strong stand on the issue and support his constituent if, in fact, that is what the people of Broadsound elected him to do.

As Mr O'Brien has not answered my question re feral animals and noxious weeds in national parks, perhaps Mrs Crawford would be good enough to do so.

New South Wales now, in its wisdom, has legislated for the control of these pests which are a threat to our great grazing industry (regarded by some as a minority although it feeds us and gives us most of our export income).

As an example of weeds, parthenium weed is now a very big worry to graziers. It has spread rapidly and so far there is no sure effective way of dealing with it.

I look forward to an answer.

Perhaps fire does do sonic good.

ALAN MORRIS' love affair with Great Keppel Island started in 1935 when he was only four weeks old and nearly drowned there and has continued until today with the publishing of a book called My Island in the Sun. It traces the island's history from 45 million years ago when the island was still attached to mainland Australia and gives a well-researched insight into the first Aborigines who, like tourists today, sought refuge there from the harshness of daily life.

My Island in the Sun is written from the heart with Alan Morris telling of his family's involvement from his grandfather through his father, uncles and brothers and his own.

Anyone who has more than just a passing interest in the Capricorn Coast and Great Keppel will find the book absorbing reading.

It's not a coffee table publication for tourists yet island visitors relaxing in a deck chair by the pool would be amazed to know they are just metres away from ghost sightings.

Details about ghosts, huge sharks, wrecks, snakes, rape and slaughter pour out of the pages making My Island in the Sun a difficult book to put down.

It starts with a woman falling between a boat and dinghy and, in the process, letting go of her four-week-old son.

The baby's father dives from the boat and rescues his wife then dives for the baby. Frantic, the father realises he is diving in the wrong spot because the boat has drifted. A change of direction puts the father in the right spot and he fmds his son, Alan, sitting happily on the sandy bottom, holding his breath.

That was Alan Morris' introduction to Great Keppel and the water surrounding it and today it still draws him.

He left an extremely well-paid job in Thailand with the Gulf Oil Corporation to build a home on Great Keppel when his family was in danger of losing the lease over a block of land that is all that's left of what the family once controlled.

The story of the land use provides the only bitterness to come through in the book ... first the bitterness of what some white men did to the resident Aborigines to take control of the island and the bitterness at the former Country PartyLiberal coalition State Government which, by refusing the Morris family a liquor licence, caused the sale of the Silver Sands Resort, the forerunner of today's Australian Airlines-controlled development.

But the bitterness is never directed at the island itself ... only to the men who set out to change, perhaps forever in Alan Morris' opinion, the natural beauty that had survived through the centuries of Aboriginal occupation but could not withstand less than 125 years of white man's land use.

Alan Morris tells the island's story from the dawn of time to today without telling the comparatively short history of the modern resort that invites the world to Get Wrecked ... he leaves that story for other pens.

He, instead, writes about the original inhabitants who came from North Keppel Island by

AND HIS ISLAND IN THE SUN canoe stopping overnight on Myall island. He weaves an interesting story of an Aborigine fed up with life on North Keppel and the continual fighting.

The Aborigine looks longingly at Great Keppel as a haven. He takes his wife, two daughters and two sons to Great Keppel and fmds food and water aplenty.

It's an idyllic life broken only by the need to visit North Keppel for "official" events such as his sons' initiations into manhood and the need for his sons and daughters to marry.

The way Alan Morris tells the story, it sounds like his own personal choice fora way of life ... the islander's only need to visit the mainland occurs for "official" matters such as dealings with government.

Unfortunately, for the Aborigine chosen for the story, visitors arrive and life changes forever ... and the parallel continues for the white man, particularly the Morris family, as visitors, or tourists, change the lifestyle.

But there's a difference in the story ... the Aborigine's visitors were unannounced and unwelcome. The Morris family brought the visitors in their own boats.

The Morris family were the first involved in tourism, catering mainly to Rockhampton and Central Queensland people seeking fishing holidays.

Two huts, Ebb and Flow, offering the barest of modern amenities, drew regular visitors forcing expansion.

Seven huts in all made up the original Silver Sands Resort which operated under Morris family control for eight years and the family delivers the visitors in two boats, the Crete (previously the Tarangabah) and the Shandon.

More visitors are brought by the tourist vessels the Fiesta and Oceanus operated by Tom Edmonstone and Ron McDougal respectively as well as light aircraft.

But growth brings financial problems. Like many small businesses, the island's attractions bring the visitors but there's never much money left over for expansion.

A loan is the answer but banks won't touch the proposal. A private loan is granted subject to the family securing a liquor licence instead of the sly grogging that has served so well up until that time.

The licence is refused and, in Alan Morris' words: "We were now on the slide and recovery was impossible. To this day I have never forgiven the government for this lousy act.

"Had we obtained the (£90,000) loan, I believe we would have eventually established one of the best resorts on the East Coast of Australia."

My Island in the Sun gives readers a different perspective of Great Keppel Island. During day trips to the island, the sqeaky, white sand, the amenities, the clear water and bush walks are taken for granted.

After reading My Island in the Sun a day tripper will realise how many times they have stood on what used to be Aboriginal middens and gravesites ... how many times they have walked past the site of numerous ghost sightings.

They may pause to look around for snakes after reading of Alan Morris' own observations.

They may not take the clear water so much for granted after they read about the 8-metre hammerhead shark.

They may pause to reflect on the savagery white men unleashed against the original black inhabitants ... the rapes, the slavery, the slaughter.

Alan Morris writes of the Aborigines seeing Captain James Cook anchoring overnight in Keppel Bay on May 27, 1770 ... and how it took almost a century for white civilisation to discover the island.

And he writes of humorous events involving his own family in the life on the island and around Emu Park and the Capricorn Coast.

My Island in the Sun is available at Capricorn Coast newsagencies and various other outlets.

Alan Morris published the book himself and it has its faults ... mainly spelling errors "caused by difficulties associated with computers," as Alan Morris says, but it is a compelling book that deserves its place in council and school libraries ... but probably after the author has at least had his rather large investment in printing returned.

After the story closes, there's a list of ships wrecked around this area from 1847 to 1896; poems written from the heart; and a list of Woppa-bura's (the original Qreat Keppel settlers) words and their translation.

Following the statement by the liberationists a fortnight ago that roasting chickens are crowded 15 to a square metre in sheds, they say Dr Martin Maxwell, who lectures at the Roslin Institute of Grassland and Animal Production, has suggested these chickens may have reached the intensive production barrier.

"He said the birds are now growing faster than their lungs and hearts can cope," Coast animal liberation spokesman said.

"This is echoed by American veterinary physiologist Donald Witzel who has stated the birds are dying because their bloodstream cannot transport sufficient oxygen for their needs.

"Undeterred by such warnings poultry geneticists have set themselves a target to breed a roasting chicken that will reach five pounds in 50 days. "Currently, the average is about 4.5 pounds in 48 days.

"These birds often fall off trucks that bring them to the abattoirs and die from thirst, starvation or by being eaten alive by ants. They are often unable to walk because their bones have not matured enough to bear the weight of their oversized bodies."

DO you know what Safety House means and does?

The Safety House programme ensures children on their way to and from school, friends' houses and trips to the shops are safe from h in.

Residents and businesses offer their homes and buildings as refuges for children so they have somewhere to run for help if the need arises.

Committees are set up in areas (Yeppoon district and Emu Park district) to organise the Safety House programme. They arrange publicity, organise safe houses, liaise with police and the governing body and fundraise.

Yeppoon and District Safety House Committee is having its annual general meeting at 7.30pm on Tuesday, March 6 at Yeppoon PreSchool.

A Safety House video will be screened and supper is served after the meeting and video.

The committee needs more Safety Houses ... you need to be at home most days at the time children are travelling to and from school.

More people are needed to volunteer their time to monitor about eight Safety Houses in a specific area once a month. These people do not have to attend meetings or fundraise.

Mrs and Mrs Preston of Fountain Street were married on February 19, 1930 in Surrey, England. They received congratulations from family and friends, Queen Elizabeth II, Governor General Bill Hayden and Prime Minister Bob Hawke. There is no need to ask what was the secret of their 60 year success ... just look at the photograph.

SCULPTOR Marg Birkett is potter of the month at the Paint Pot Gallery. She is an experienced sculptor who delights with her animals and figures.

During March the gallery's main room will be filled with an exhibition ... the Paint Pot is taking part in the Women in the Arts festival.

Painting, pottery, sculpture, china painting, weaving, home spun articles, paperwork, wood carving, weaving, French silk flowers, quilting, leather work and tapestry will be included for the festival.

Society member Kay Faulkner from Redlands is sending a parcel of weaving for the exhibition ... her work was part of a display in the gallery in November, 1989.

On the morning of each day in March, as part of the festival, artists and craftswomen will demonstrate their skills at the gallery.

CAPRICORN Coast basketball minor season starts this week with seniors from 6pm on Monday. Juniors and intermediates start competition next week.

These two divisions are carrying a bye and there is still room for additional teams. Early entry is essential to have an opportunity at the finals.

Another intermediate girls team would create a girls' competition for the first time and juniors still have some time slots available.

New referees have come forward but the numbers and experience are still insufficient to cover all games. Because of this some teams will be rostered to referee games.

With the competition underway players are required to have their registrations paid and teams turned out in approved uniform. This applies from the first game unless prior written approval is received. Benching rules are also in force.

Now the season has been organised the management committee can move on to the annual general meeting.

Capricorn Coast Basketball has reached a coming of age with the 1990 annual general meeting. Management committee members have served for three years and generally agree it is time for a change.

With about 250 members the association has been raised from nothing to a viable, financial incorporated body with constitutions, by laws and a good venue, backed by a sound financial situation and the groundwork has been laid for a bright future for basketball on the Coast.

Each management committee member feels the association needs to look for new blood.

OUTRIGGERS TO ISLAND THE Capricorn Coast Outrigger Club men's team travels to Hayman Island this weekend to dompete in the Hayman Ashes.

They will race from Hayman Island to Hamilton Island. It is the toughest outrigger race in Australia.

The six-man team, Mick Stafford, Matt Tamassy, Paul Furber, Michael Cervai, Trevor Thomasson and Gary Wilkins have prepared themselves for this event with a rigorous training programme.

EMU Park Golf Club's Tuesday associates played their first monthly medal for club trophies.

HOT CONDITIONS FOR 1990 JUNIOR CRICKET CAPRICORN Coast junior cricket has started its 1990 season with hot conditions.

In the first week, Yeppoon Colts 4/5 were downed by Cavaliers 98 to 70 at Barmaryee.

Joel Simpson, Glenn Edwards and Andrew Stockley were Cavaliers' best bats with 14; 11 and 10 respectively and they were retired.

Joel Simpson lined up for best batsman with Michael Robertson and they were two wickets for thtee runs and one wicket for no runs respectively.

Alexander Sykes retired with 11 runs and Leigh Williams scored three as Colts best bats.

David Cue took two wickets for four runs and John Lawton took one for two.

In the year 6/7 game between Colts and Cavaliers, cavaliers won 100 to 72 at Yeppoon Primary.

Jon Robertson was 28 retired and Geoff Boon scored 13 runs and they were Cavaliers best bats.

In the year 6/7 game between Emu Park Aussies and Yeppoon Cavaliers at Yeppoon primary Cavaliers won, 85-84, in a close match.

Geoff Boon and Aaron Freestone were top bats for Cavalierswith 26 retired and 20 not out respectively. Best bowlers were Steven Gray, four for nine, and Jon Robertson, three for six.

Yeppoon Colts downed Sacred Heart Koalas 70-48 at Farnborough.

Shaun Rose, 16, Chris Smith, 11 and Daniel Bayne also with 11 were Colts' best bats. AndrewMackie took five wickets for seven runs... a good day's work.

Koala's best bats were David Neal with 11 runs and Dan McKavanagh on eight. Dan fronted again as best with the ball with three wickets for four runs.

Overwhelming support for gymnastics OVERWHELMING support from parents and reconstruction of the Capricorn Coast Gymnastic Club has resulted in the formation of the Koppel Coast Gymnastic Club.

The new club is in the process of applying for incorporation and a new constitution had been adopted.

Keppel Coast Gymnastic Club is financially secure because of fundraising by parents, supporters and donations from Capricorn Coast service clubs.

Classes will continue in the Yeppoon High School Assembly Hall.

Enrolments and start of the 1990year are on Saturday. Pre-school beginners (three years and up) boys and girls is from 9am to 9.45am.

Beginners' boys and girls, 10am to 11 am. Boys, llam to noon.

Girls: level one, 12.30pm to 1.30pm; level two, 1.30pm to 2.30pm; level 4, 5 and 7, 2.30pm to 4pm. Phone Anna, 39 1297 or Pat, 39 6437, for times of each level.

Miniball replaces junior basketball JUNIOR basketball played at the Queensland Recreational Council stadium Cooee Bay has had name change ... it is now Yeppoon Miniball.

The name change brings the group into line with Rockhampton junior basketball which has already changed its name.

Miniball starts on Sunday, February 25 and all players, old and new must be at the stadium at 1pm to enable age groups and playing times to be organised.

Any child under 13 - which means he/she does not turn 14 years in 1990 - is eligible to play.

Miniball is designed to enable children to learn basic ball-handling skills in a non-competitive atmosphere.

A strong emphasis is placed on building the player's confidence and self-esteem as well as learning the skills and rules of the game.

As many of last year's under 8 players have moved into the under 10 section miniball has several tiny, keen players who need more children of the same age to join in the fun.

The under 10 and under 13 groups are also keen for new players.

If your children have ever experienced failure at sports or if they lack confidence and/or the ability to take part or if they have not had, in your opinion, a 'fair go', then miniball may be your answer.

There are no uniforms, no registration fees, non-competitive, no pressure-just fun, learn as you play, modified rules and the cost per day is one dollar.

Me bath ei the ittivist CURRENT author Lindsay Hartwig (doesn't that sound better than former Member for Callide and former Livingstone Shire chairman?) was in town on Wednesday and dropped in at the Capricorn Coast Mirror to say hello. He's looking fit, has lost a lot of weight, and is still as sharp as a tack. Lindsay has opinions on heaps of topics and they make sense. He reckons party politics is dead (remember, he was ousted from the Nats then won Callide as an Independent) and feels Queensland could be better run by a board of executives. He also reckons no country can get ahead when people are paid for not working or for having babies. Now, after that, you can guess at the contents of his book. By the way, he's still writing it (third rewrite because events keep happening too quickly) but expects it to be out later this year. It will be called Inside and Out. •• • THERE are times when reporters covering Livingstone Shire Council wonder if they have heard correctly ... for instance, shire chairman Cr John Bowen, discussing Ogmore water supply problems, said: 'They're in deep soup up there"!!!

•• • THEN there was the letter from Treasure Trove owner Edna Thring complaining about fun parlour patrons leaving their bicycles on the path outside her shop ... Cr Bowen urged fellow councillors to take some action rather than be seen to be "back-pedalling" on the matter!

•• • THEN there was the recommendation that a sign should be painted green to blend with the environment ... and Cr Key Hinz said it should be painted brown if it was going to blend!

•• • STILL in fine form, Cr Hinz, when debating a letter from a resident complaining about water coming up to the front step at his house, said: "If he's got water now, what will it be like when it rains?"!

Captain's century tops off great victory against old cricket foes CAPRICORN Coast second grade cricketers scored an impressive win over old rivals Easts on the weekend at Yeppoon Showground.

The win also included another great century

by Coast captain Jeff Ingle ... his second for the season and against the same opposition.

Ingle won the toss and elected to bat and at stumps on the first day was six for 256 with Ingle unbeaten on 100.

Batting on for the first half-hour on Sunday, Coast was all out for 290 with Jeff Ingle making 123. Jason Dawes was 42, Gary Muller 35 and Ravi Setu made a patient 14.

Coast's bowling and fielding was spot on and the home side had Easts reeling to be all out for 95.

Ken Ogilvie took one for 33 from 10 overs, Wayne Kitchener took two for 31 from 13, Ian Anderson took four for 22 from 11 and Jason Dawes took three for six from seven.

Jeff Ingle took two sharp catches and Wayne Kitchener displayed a new technique in catching when the ball went right through his hands but he held on to it with his legs.

Easts was asked to follow on and at stumps was four for 86.

The score could have been much worse for Easts had it not been for three dropped catches.

Ken Ogilvie took one for 21 from six, Wayne Kitchener had two for 37 from seven and Jeff Ingle took one for 17 from five. Wicket-keeper

Brod Gough also hung onto a catch.

Jeff Ingle was named Yeppoon Tyre Service and Yeppoon Panel and Paint man of the match.

This weekend second grade has a bye but resumes the following weekend against Grammar on Saturday and Sunday, March 3 and 4 at Yeppoon Showground.

Coast bundled out for 66 runs CAPRICORN Coast third grade cricketers lost on the first innings to All Blacks at Victoria Park on the weekend.

Coast won the toss and sent All Blacks into bat and at stumps on the first day was all Out for 231.

Simon Perkins tool four for 36 from 17 overs, Mick Barsby took three for 23 from eight. Tony Ellison took four for 29 from six and Peter Huxtable took two for 16 from six.

Coast was bundled out for a low score of 66 with only Peter Huxtable and Simon Perkins reaching double figures of 11 runs each.

Following on in Coast's second innings the side was six for 97 at stumps with Trevor Simpson making 33 and Mathew Williams 27.

Thisweekend Coast plays Allenstown at Saleyards Park starting at 12.45pm.

BLOKE at Strand Hotel for Sixties Mania Showband had a sweet young thing take his hand, turn it over and place a stamp on his wrist. "What's that for?" he said. "It makes you legitimate," sweet young thing replies.

"Hey, that's more than my parents could do," he answered, filtering into the crowd!!!

•• • BY the way, Sixties Mania would have satisfied any baby-boomer looking for a night of nostalgia ... they started as a Beatles take-off band then diversified into a full 1960s group taking off the musical names that made the decade. They were terrific on the Beatles numbers, did the Rolling Stones hits with class and absolutely surprised with their Searchers numbers. The guitar sound was identical to the Searchers' hits. They gave a top value, performing for about 2 hours and 10 minutes and their rendition of the Beach Boys' Wipeout stirred memories in many an old surfie. The drummer was unreal. It's logical that so much music from the '60s should be recycled in this conservation-minded world but it's strange to look at the group perform and realise the oldest on stage was just 26!!!

•• • INCIDENTLY, Strand Hotel licensee Peter Green recycled an old phrase when talking about the success of the Sixties Mania night ... "due to popular demand they could be back on their next tour"!!! Oh -wow, a blast from the past from the days of steam radio!

••• WAITRESS overheard by Coast businessman this week talking to another table ... it seems, according to the waitress, the Coast is bankrupt and it's on the scrapheap. The businessman was shocked when she suggested the visitors should head to Airlie Beach for their holiday. He would like to point out to the girl that it's her own job she's sending north!!!
