Drugs Coast police issue warning

YEPPOON Police officer-in-charge Sgt lc Ken Tanzer this week said education was the best way for residents to stop crime in their area.

"Coast people are changing their care-free ways of leaving their homes and cars unsecured and criminals are having a harder time," Sgt Tanzer said.

"Residents are also becoming more aware.

They are notifying us of anything unusual happening in their street or area.

"The education process is working and now the next step must be taken," he said.

"Many thefts are the result of the need to purchase illegal drugs and we can all help stop the availability of those drugs.

"The idea is to educate people on what to expect."

Sgt Tanzer said parents should watch their children for out-of-character behaviour.

"Loss of appetite is another way. But if your child's character changes for an extended length of time be aware.

"This does not mean you can't trust your children or that you shouldn't. It means you should.care for your children. Take more notice of what they are doing, where they are going and with whom.

"Drugs are more available than when you were growing up. Many parents don't know what marijuana looks like. They don't know what it smells like and they don't know what to • do," he said.

"We can help parents and other seriously interested people to identify cannabis. There is information available at the station to help.

"If you think you have a problem with your children, if their character changes and stays that way or if they become distant as well ... call either myself, 39 1400, or Detective Sgt 2c Jim Hayes and we will try to assist you.

"Your talk with us will be confidential. We can help you assess the situation and assist you.

If we can't handle the situation we will refer you to other organisations who are able to help."

Sgt Tanzer said children should be aware of illegal drug problems.

"If they see anything untoward, they should tell their parents, who can then contact us.

"We are here to help."

Police: marijuana residue stays in a person's system forever eye

TETRAHYDROCANNIBANOL is the residue from using marijuana (cannabis) and stays in the system forever Yeppoon Police officerin-charge Ken Tanzer said this week.

"It can't be cleared from the system at all," he said.

"An increased build up of tetrahydrocannibanol in persons who use cannabis causes loss of appetite, users become strange in their approach to life. They don't carp about anything.

"The drug produces relaxed feelings and users virtually become vegetables. They don't bother to eat and have no feelings of hurt or injury," he said.

"They even eat cannabis because the need is so great.

"After a while they look for other drugs to give them more of a kick. Their system is used to cannabis and they crave something more.

"They become in need of stronger drugs and need to use them more frequently. Then they have a big habit to pay for.

"To get money to pay for the habit they will do anything ... commit any offence to raise the money needed to buy drugs.

"Dealers aren't usually drug users and it is in their interest to encourage the illegal drug market."

Sgt Tanzer said under section 46 of the Drugs Misuse Act informers are protected.

People who give information about illegal drug offences - growing, dealing or using - have their identity protected at all times,

"Their identity is kept confidential so much so that it places a burden on the person receiving the information," he said.

"If the person who receives the information discloses the name of the person who has given information or discloses any particulars that could could lead to his identification he is guilty of a crime and will be charged."

Race club vote changes name from Tyrer to Keppel Park YEPPOON Amateur Racing Club members last week voted to change the name of Tyrer Park to Keppel Park.

A total of 201 financial members were eligible to vote and 144 ballots were returned which resulted in 83 for the name change and 61 against.

$1000 donation `marvellous gesture THE 51000 donation from the Capricorn Coast Tourist Organisation toward the cost of coloured lights for Yeppoon Shopping Centre was a "marvellous gesture," Capricorn Coast Chamber of Commerce and Industry president John Jackson said this week.

Mr Jackson was away on business last week when the CCTO's offer was announced by chairman Brian Hooper.

Mr Jackson said this week he understood just how much $1000 was to the CCTO

"$1000 is S1000 to any group and it's money they could spend on their own projects. The chamber very much appreciates the CCTO helping us with our project".

He said he had spoken with Mr Hooper to convey the chamber's thanks and both groups now saw the opportunity to march hand in hand toward the future.

The chamber and the CCTO will be getting together to set up a joint committee to work on a plan for the main shopping centre of Yeppoon.

Despite rumours to the contrary, that vote was final and the new name is already Keppel Park ... although letters must be exchanged between the race club committee and the trustees to make the change official.

The result, as could be expected, does not satisfy everyone. Dick Tyrer, the man who led the work to establish the race club, regards the name change as "a complete insult to our family".

Race club president John Millroy said the vote was the wish of the members and the result would be carried out by the committee ... "the members have been consulted and this is their wish".

Thevote was held over two weeks culminating in the counting on Friday, October 13.

Diplomatically, the race book produced for Wednesday's race meeting (October 18) had no name on it, neither Tyrer Park nor Keppel Park.

Mr Millroy said the move to change the name came from the floor during general business at the recent annual general meeting.

In accordance with the constitution, the motion was seconded and carried. Some days later the committee wrote to Dick Tyrer asking him to present a case for the "against" vote and the committee prepared a case "for" the motion.

Both were included on one sheet of paper and sent to 201 financial members.

The "for" vote proposal started: "The proposal to change the name of the Racecourse is not an attempt to denigrate the efforts of the Tyrer family".

It then presents an argument for change based on making the track better known by naming it after its geographic location first named by Captain Cook in 1770.

It closed by stating the committee's belief that the name change "is the right commercial decision which will enable the club to prosper into the 1990s and beyond".

The committee's proposal is presented as a hard-headed, business-like decision to attract tourists to the race meetings.

The "against" vote proposal (presented under the name of R.G. (Dick))Tyrer) closes, in part, by saying: "The course bears my name because I was the captain of the team who won it back from the ironbark, mahogany and land developers".

This appeal was more from the heart.

Between the two proposals there appears to be no middle ground. There appears to be no room for compromise.

Dick Tyrer has friends ... the committee has friends.

Rather than have this issue turn into a fullscale slanging match, the Capricorn Coast Mirror has interviewed John Millroy, speaking as president and for the committee, and Dick Tyrer.

Obviously, they see things differently. Both sides were given their own story to read before it was published.

DENHAMS Savemore is part of an Australia-wide code of conduct introduced by State retailers associations to encourage fair trading.

Manager Ron Iafrati said thisweek part of the code of conduct ensured that any customer who had been overcharged because of computerisation (scanners) would have the item's full amount refunded and receive the item free of any charge.

"If any items are undercharged the customer also keeps the item at that price, they do not have to pay the extra amount," Mr Iafrati said.

"The refund is on all products in the store whether on special or at normal price. Of course, shoppers must present their grocery tape so their claim can be verified.

"If anyone has any problems shopping in our store, please come to me. I know customers tell the check-out girls of things they think are wrong, but I can give satisfaction," he said.

"Our girls are very good but I am the manager and all decisions are made by me.

"We have systems in progress at the moment and hope to eliminate problems with the pricing scanner, but it all takes time.

"Checking the prices against the shelf tickets isn't a five minute job ... we stock thousands of products. It is a daunting task.

"We try to make sure everything is right, but sometimes products escape.

"We hope this new code of conduct and our customers needs will help iron out any problems with pricing."

Major upgrade Emu Park State School IN 1987, after being elected as Member for Broadsound, I visited Emu Park State School and found an over-crowded and cramped school bursting at the seams with totally inadequate shelter from the sun with covered area being only under the building itself. Like many primary schools, it had grown in terms of students and classrooms but staff facilities lagged badly behind. Sick children were held in the sick bay which also doubled as the staffroom, conditions which really did nothing for staff morale. I promised the school staff and parents and citizens association that the situation would improve.

Today I am proud of Emu Park State School. A magnificent new covered area additional classrooms, new staff facilities and principal's office, with appropriate covered walkways and landscaping, has created an entirely diffeient atmosphere. An enthusiastic parents and citizens association has ensured all improvements are complemented with well cared for grounds.

Emu Park has a school the district can be proud of- a commitment honoured - a Broadsound achievement.

White fly damage to coconut palms

COCONUT palms have been dying on the Capricorn Coast for two years.

"The recent deaths of palms are probably due to the combination of a number of causes, the most important being a white fly," DPI senior entomologist Rod Elder said.

"A survey of coconuts along the Coast from the Capricorn International Resort to Emu Park on Sunday indicated many plants had had a severe infestation of white fly.

"These infestations are now decreasing."

The white fly infestations are characterised by white cotton wool-like material on the underside of the leaves.

The nymphs (immatures) are scale-like and, have pores on their backs through which they excrete wax to form a white filament. The adults are two mm in length and look like small white moths or flies. They can usually be found crawling among the filaments.

The nymphs suck the sap of the coconut leaves. They pass large amounts through their bodies. Sooty mould (a black fungus) will grow on the leaf surface where the sugary solution is excreted.

The coconut is damaged in two ways ... by loss of large amounts of sap and the exclusion of light by the sooty mould.

"Another sap-sucking insect, a psyllid, is also present, although in smaller numbers," he said.

The psyllid nymphs are scale-like, two to three mm in diameter and are black with a thin white fringe.

"Usually these insects alone are not sufficient to cause death of coconuts.

"However, combined with poor growing conditions such as the recent burst of cooler than normalweather, dry condition and lack of fertiliser could tip the balance and allow entry of disease organisms such as the lethal Phytophera fungus which enters the roots and kills the growing point. Death of trees follows."

He said with the decline of the white fly populations in part due to the activities of predatory ladybird beetles, it is now important to ensure trees have the best possible growing conditions.

"This can be achieved by providing adequate water and fertilising the tree surrounds with a mixed fertiliser containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.

"Insecticides should only be used on severely infested trees to relieve the white fly pressure.

General use of insecticides in this situation is unwarranted as it is best to allow predators to clean up the remaining white fly."

Life Education Mobile Unit will be at Coast schools next year CAPRICORN Coast residents have ensured a Life Education Mobile unit will be available to school children next year.

"The response from residents and business houses has been wonderful," Capricorn Coast Life Education sub-committee chairman Dave Larkin said.

"We expect to have a unit ready to educate our young people on the misuse of drugs by the start of the 1990 second semester."

The mobile unit will service the Capricorn Coast, Rockhampton and Gladstone and costs about 5115,000. The Central Queensland Life Education Centre is now incorporated and has sub-committees in Gladstone and the Capricorn Coast.

The total amount to be raised by the CQ committee was $200,000 - for the mobile classroom, a vehicle to tow it, teacher's training and first year's operating costs.

Mr Larkin said the three areas would have raised sufficient funds by the end of next month and will place an order for the mobile classroom.

"It takes about four to five months from placement to delivery. Advertisements have to be placed for a teacher to man the unit. The teacher then goes.to Broadbeach on the Gold Coast for training at a special training unit," he said.

"The Life Education unit is a mobile classroom and will not be based in any one location ... it will move from school to school in the three areas."

The Capricorn Coast sub-committee - Dave Larkin, Don Knowles, Lynda Gustafson, Fay Owens, Warren Rinkevich and Barbara Fitchen - has organised functions through Scope and Yeppoon Lions Club.

"Our last fundraising is a street stall on Friday, November 17 in front of Findlay's and Smile for Life, a statewide Life Education campaign on Friday, November 3.

"Scope made the Life Education unit its project of the year and members have organised and worked to raise $2200," Mr Larkin said.

"Members presented a $1000 cheque, from

the Man-of-the-Year function, to the subcommittee on the Sunset Cruise on Saturday night."

Yeppoon Lions Club organised an art union for a S1000 sapphire donated anonymously.

The winner, drawn during the Sunset Cruise, was S Watson, 2 Orchid Street, Kinka Beach.

"The art union added S2000 to the Life Education Unit and the Sunset Cruise on Reefseeker was an enormous success ... $3100 nett.

"There were 250 people on the cruise. We weren't able to anchor off Yeppoon Main Beach and instead spent the evening off Great Keppel Island."

Mr Larkin said the organising of the cruise was excellent and under the guidance of Fay Owens. He gave special thanks to Scope and in particular, Lynda Gustafson for organising and running Casino Capers on the cruise.

"Yeppoon Lions Club and president Don Knowles have organised the art union and helped with the Sunset Cruise and the Man-ofthe-Year."

He thanked everyone who has supported the Life Education committee.

"We have had quite a few anonymous donations for large and small amounts. The list is long and those people have received our thanks individually."

BLUE NURSES TRAVEL 46,000km TO TREAT COAST PATIENTS THREE cars covered 46,572km to make 8486 visits to Capricorn Coast Blue Nursing Service. patients during 1988/89.

Nursing director Jan Robinson said at the service's 16th annual meeting the figures represented an increase of 8.7 per cent and was probably accounted for by weekend and evening work.

"The three permanent staff remain unchanged but all three casual positions have changed," Sr Robinson said.

"Srs Elaine Saxby and Olive Murray transferred to part-time hospital work and Sr Teresa

Sander resigned due to other commitments.

"In their places we have welcomed Srs Beth Harris, Penny Munn and Heather Irons," she said.

"Thirteen families have been given home respite care under the HACC programme, using 1065 hours. It represents a decrease in hours on the previous year, but of these 13 families, three patients have been admitted to institutional care and two have died.

"A student from Aramac spent a week with us for work experience and talk was given to St Ursula's year 12 home economic girls.

Sr Robinson said a cancer seminar in Rockhampton had been attended and she went to the annual nursing directors conference.

"I thank everyone who has contributed to our work in any way, especially the committee, ladies auxiliary, director, Community Health, hospital staff and doctors."

son who chose the service as her charity for the bicentennial Queen quest and won the charity title; Angie Bell from Sacred Heart School who, with her friends, had a litter drive on Yeppoon Main Beach; Giggle and Gossip; annual doorknock; auxiliary luncheons and fashion parades; garden fete at Sr Jo Rundle's home; and Rotary who supplied us with a car change-over.

"We attended the opening of the Bill Shuttlewood pensioner units and these units have become home for several of our patients," Sr Robinson said.

CAPRICORN Coast Blue Nursing Service enters a new era this year with the establishment of a respite care centre in Yeppoon.

Chairman Nyree Svenson presented her 1988/89 report at the 16th annual general meeting and marked the respite care centre as the start of a new era.

She said the year had been one of change and challenge: three sisters had left and been replaced; a new car delivered; new land for the respite care centre purchased and the expected establishment in the 1989/90 of the centre.

"We were delighted to hear that our application to establish a Respite Day Care centre on the Coast had been successful," Rev Nyree Svenson said.

"A double storied residence set on an acre was purchased for $160,000. The ground floor will be altered for use as the respite centre.

"It will provide a kitchen, toilet facilities for the disabled, a quiet room and an activities room. We envisage the centre will be operate five days a week," she said.

"In the meantime we expect to operate on a limited scale. With this end in view will employ a co-ordinator in the near future.

"A bus has been bought and is being converted for use by wheelchair patients at a cost of $47,500. This leaves a deficit of $2500 above the federal government grant."

Rev Svenson said the service hopes to have the bus on display during the Pineapple Festival.

"We are about to begin a new era. The land on Rockhampton Road is an indication of our expansion into the community," she said.

"It is set in what may become an alive area of business life and we are alive to the needs around us. Our dreams are unlimited and the possibilities open to exploration.

"Over the next few months our staff will more than double and we look forward to working together in God's kingdom.

"We acknowledge the past and take our-heritage from it; we live in the reality of the present, walking in the Spirit; and we place the future in God's hands greeting it with expectation."

Auxiliary raises $5000 in year VOLUNTEER auxiliary helpers for the Capricorn Coast Blue Nursing Service handed over 55000 to the service at the 16th annual meeting.

"We remember that all of us, and so many helpers, worked hard on our fund raising days," Capricorn Coast Blue Nursing Service Women's Auxiliary president Beryl Watson said.

"Our numbers are small but our supporters are numerous. We pay tribute to them all. We just couldn't managewith out the help of Scope and the men who help us."

The auxiliary organised two luncheons with Krugers Fashion parades. To meet the costs of the luncheons the auxiliary held street stalls.

"Our auxiliary also helped with the Zilzie garden fete and thank Sr Jo Rundle for opening her garden' for the event.

"We provided refreshments on collection days as usual, and yet more party fare for the Sisters Christmas party for patients," she said.

"Auxiliary members are often amazed at the generosity of patrons and friends. Very well do we know the explanation ... it is the high regard in which our Blue Nurses are held on the Coast."

PRAISE FOR GYM K HANA SUCCESS YEPPOON Pony Club held its annual breakup and presentations at Yeppoon Waterslide on Sunday.

President Bruce Towle thanked club members for their efforts throughout the year and congratulated the riders on their successes in the zone gymkhanas.

Yeppoon riders won more march pasts than any other club in the district and dominated the rider classes, particularly the 13 to 15 age group. They were also successful in the jumping equestrian.

Jason Powell received the trophy for winning the most gymkhana points for the year and his sister Debbie was runner up. The Powell family has retained this trophy for five consecutive years.

Sara Luthy won the award for the club's most improved rider. A special trophy was awarded to Yolande Croese for the 1989 best rally achiever.

Individual results: Brendan Croese, best senior rider; Bruce Towle runner up.

Gavin Thompson won the best rider over 15 years and Jason Powell was runner up. Danielle Croese won the most improved rider in this age group and Cathy Budd best trier.

WORK EXPERIENCE A TASTE OF THE FUTURE • By Troy Dean, Year 11 St Brendan's College, on work experience at the Capricorn Coast Mum,: TWENTY Year 10 and 11 St Brendan's students were given a taste of the future last week when they spent five days on work experience on the Capricorn Coast.

The five days of work experience are designed to allow students to work in a field of their choice so that they can see what their possible future field is like.

I discovered journalism is best learned "in the field" and was assigned to interview seven of the 20 students working on the Coast.

I had to find out why they chose the particular field they were working in, if it lived up to their expectations, if they decided that this was the career for them and what they had done so far.

I chose to work at the Capricorn Coast Mirror for journalism and found that I enjoyed most of the work. While sometimes it was a little boring, the interviews tended to liven up things.

John and Suzy Watson showed me journalism was no bed of roses, that a journalist could be called on to work long hours, often late into the night, and were not necessarily well respected in the communities they worked in, especially the larger towns and cities.

Work experience with an architect confirmed for Roy Chang that he wants to continue in this field because no two jobs were the same.

Working at Neil Roberts Architect Pty Ltd, Roy found no difficulties because he had experienced similar work in graphics at school.

He is now confident of his abilities in this field. Because no two jobs were the same, and each was a challenge, he said he was never bored.

The use of facsimile machines and the amount of art required surprised him.

The responsibilities involved in architecture demand six years of university study with 10 months of work experience,during that period but he is prepared to do the course.

Chris Ward was one student who found work experience settled at least one of his choices of work for the future.

He worked at the Capricornia Veterinary Clinic. The work was more interesting than he had expected although he wasn't allowed to do anything by himself for the obvious reason that something could go wrong.

Chris helped veterinarian Glyn Wyeth by holding the animals as they were vaccinated and treated. Mr Wyeth gave step-by-step explanations as he worked so Chris could understand fully what was happening.

Chris said he would be prepared to do the five year course at a university to become a qualified veterinarian ... but would consider dentistry.

He wants to be a veterinarian because he likes animals and has dogs, a cat and a horse. If he couldn't become a veterinarian or dentist he would like to be an engineer.

So far he has learnt about diseases, their effects, and how to treat them. He has no difficulties in this field except in understanding some of the terms used but he found there was not always enough work.

Chris said he hated to see animals in pain and liked to help them but he would take it hard if one of the animals he treated died.

During his week of work experience he has already watched while a stray cat was put down with an injection that killed it in seconds.

Robert Carige, who had work experience at Yeppoon Kitchens, was thinking of becoming a carpenter or a cabinet-maker but now has reservations.

He had no problems with the work itself but discovered the machines he used were so advanced they took the fun out of the work.

To be a carpenter or a cabinet-maker requires a four year apprenticeship before becoming qualified.

After experiencing the weekly work routing at Yeppoon Small Motors, Jason Bartlett realised his future would probably be tied up in similar endeavours.

He said he liked working with motors, especially the smaller ones, because of their growing popularity in the farming industry and other fields.

He would like to be a fitter and turner or a mechanic. These positions require a three or four year apprenticeship.

During his week, he helped repair engines but was always supervised because of the chance that he could do something wrong.

He is certain he will be involved in the mechanical field in the future and now has more confidence in his abilities in this field.

Billy Kramer had no problems with the work at Minter Motors and enjoyed work experience ... but he can't see his future in the field.

Although he is interested in mechanics, he said he would not like a job in this field because of the hours (8am to 5pm).

He would also prefer an occupation that was not as dirty or noisy.

A free trip aboard the Reefseeker to NorthWest Island on Thursday was an unexpected highlight of work experience forJared Hooper.

He spent his week with the Capricorn Coast Tourist Organisation at the Information Centre because he wanted to get to know the public relations field.

He wanted to meet the people who visit the Capricorn Coast because he already knew a fair amount about the region and the places to visit.

The work was better than he thought it would be. Although the tourism industry is starting to expand to vast size, Jared has decided he would not like to become part of the field.

He now thinks he would prefer to work as an architect. He said the Information Centre was boring during the first two days because the Queensland holidays had just finished and the New South Wales holidays had just begun.

There were no tourists because they were still making their way to Yeppoon from the South.

By the middle of the week the centre was busy.

His highlight was the Reefseeker trip on Thursday when he learned first-hand what a tourist experiences.

TIME RUNNING OUT TO NOMINATE FOR AUSTRALIA DAY AWARD TIME is running out to nominate someone for a Livingstone Shire Australia Day Award and no nominations have been received at Livingstone Shire chambers.

To make it easier for people nominating suitable recipients, deputy shire clerk Key Lloyd has a sheet at the council chambers explaining the criteria for the Australia Day Council awards.

He has included a form with all the information needed to nominate people for the awards, all you have to do is fill in the spaces.

Every year Livingstone Shire Council presents Australia Day awards to residents who have worked for the community without reward.

It is the time for people who work, without pay

or public praise, to receive recognition from the community.

Council, in conjunction with the Australia Day Council, will present the awards on Australia Day, 1990.

A ceremony is usually arranged by council, separate to the selection committee.

There are two citizen awards - citizen and junior citizen - and three sports medallions over 18 years, under 18 years and coach, official or administrator.

People who have been nominated in the past and not received an award are eligible to be renominated.

The aim of the citizen awards is to recognise outstanding contributions to the local community and the sports medallions are to recognise

achievement in or contribution to, the field of sport.

Recipients should not be paid for their community or-sports work, they may not already have received other awards.

The awards are specifically for those who would not normally receive any recognition.

The citizen award is for a person 25 years or older on January 26, 1990; junior citizen for a person under 25 years on January 26, 1990.

A sports medallion may be awarded to a participant of 18 years of age or over; under 18 years; or a person of any age who has made a significant contribution to any recognised

sport as a coach, official and or administrator.

Applications must carry the name of the person nominating a recipient; an address or phone number where they may be contacted for further information; the nominee's name, address, phone number, age, award section and the reason why that person should be considered to receive the award.

John Millroy: race club change of name a commercial decision

JOHN MILLROY is the Yeppoon Amateur Race Club president and has been for the past eight months. He is backed by a committee.

In the past eight months, Mr Millroy said he had fielded three committee proposals to change the race course name from Tyrer Park.

"On each occasion, I said the committee had more to concern itself with than changing the name," he said on Tuesday.

"The club was in debt, at one stage had as few as 32 financial members, and was close, very close, to closing."

Racing Minister earlier this year when Mr Millroy was elected was Jim Randell and Mr Millroy said the Minister had spelled out that unless racing clubs were viable they would get no further funding from the government.

"I saw the committee's main task to be making the club viable and we have done that," he said.

He said membership, in the past when the track was being established and enthusiasm had been running high, had been up to 230.

Then interest waned and membership fell.

"Now, eight months later, the club has 201 financial members."

Then the annual general meeting was held and, during general business, the proposal came from the floor to change the racecourse name. It was moved and seconded, discussed and carried.

"The motion ordered the committee to make contact with all members to seek their opinion on changing the name from Tyrer Park to one that would be more in keeping with this area's tourism image," Mr Millroy said.

"The committee had no option but to follow the resolution."

In accordance with the club's constitution, when a poll is requested, a case had to be prepared for both sides and all members given the opportunity to vote.

"The committee wrote to Mr Dick Tyrer, who had attended the annual general meeting, to write 500 words for the 'against' vote," INK Millroy said.

"He was asked to return the 500 words within 14 days. Mr Tyrer made contact with the club and said he could not complete the task in a fortnight.

"The club extended the time for a further week. When we received his letter it contained more than 600 words and he was asked to reduce it. He said that was his statement ... and the whole statement was included for the 'against' case.

"The committee included, on the same sheet of paper, the 'for' case that it had worded."

Ballot papers were sent out and a fortnight later, at 10am on October 13, voting closed and the ballot boxes were opened and counted.

"Votes were counted and recorded by returning officer Leo Mackie and scrutineered by an officer of the Westpac Bank," Mr Millroy said.

"All votes, when posted to the club, had been given, unopened, to the Westpac Bank and placed in the ballot box which was locked in the vault.

"The vote was a clear majority for a change of name to Keppel Park."

It was rumoured that the vote had to be considered by the committee, then the trustees, then sent to the Land Administration Committee for approval. Mr Millroy said the constitution was checked and, under rule 49, the result of the poll became the resolution of the meeting.

"Once the resolution was passed it became binding on members," Mr Millroy said.

"It's done ... it's finished. The formalities are . in train. The committee has to write to the trustees seeking approval and the trustees have to give their reply.

"The committee has already asked the trustees and been given approval, so the rest is a formality."

The committee also phoned the Lands Administration Commission in Brisbane giving details of the vote and was told LAC permission was not required under the Lands Act. The trustees phoned the Racing Services Branch in Brisbane about the vote and was told branch permission was not required. The trustees were told it was "purely a local matter".

learned permission was not required for the name change and that it was purely a local matter.

"So, all that is left is the exchange of letters," Mr Millroy said. "The decision can't be changed. The members have been consulted and this is their wish."

He said the name change was a commercial decision. This had been stated in the committee's proposal for the name change.

"Very few race clubs in Queensland regularly race mid-week. Your club is not allowed to race against Rockhampton on Saturday," the proposal to members said.

"The number of local residents we can attract is limited during the working week so we rely on tourists for profitable numbers.

"Tourists are attracted through advertising, so how can we get a larger share of the tourist dollar with limited advertising funds?

"We believe we can do it by aligning ourselves more closely with the known tourist attractions of our region. With all due respect, the present name has no significance with this area.

"On the other hand, because of the thousands of dollars spent annually by private enterprise, Federal and State Government, there are two local namesknown throughout Australia -- Great Keppel Island and Keppel Bay. "A change to `Keppel Park' would immediately identify our geographic location for a stranger to Central Queensland. Captain Cook gave the area the name in 1770."

The committee's proposal said racecourses were rarely named after people and there were good reasons. Most trackswere associated with suburb names of towns and cities.

An example given was Gold Coast Racecourse ... "it has worked for them. It can also work for us, simply because tourists can go racing mid-week - they're on holidays and 'The Coast' is the attraction".

The proposal also pointed out that like some other enterprises in Yeppoon, the club had had its share of adverse publicity. Changing of the name from Capricorn Iwasaki Resort to Capricorn International Resort was given as an example.

"Undoubtably, the Tyrer family worked hard to re-establish the racecourse on the Government Reserve but they didn't do it on their own," the proposal said. "In 1978 there were 49 foundation members of the Yeppoon Recreation and development Association and they worked long and hard too!

"Their efforts have not been recognised at all. The committee can ensure all the 49 foundation workers are rewarded. There are many good buildings on course and hopefully more to come. These could be named in honour of the Tyrer family and other individuals or groupswho, by their labours, also deserve their own place in the club's history."

Mr Millroy said those reasons had been advanced and members voted in favour of them.

"It was a commercial decision," he said.

"There was no intention to denigrate the Tyrer family. No-one owns a racecourse. It is controlled by the members and the members have made their decision."

Dick Tyrer: led happy-go-lucky Lpack of stick-pickers at course THE name Tyrer Parkwas not the universal, choice when it was given its first public airing in February, 1980 ... in fact, when the name was first proposed it prompted a flurry of publicity.

Dick Tyrer, the man who was elected president of the steering committee inAugust, 1977, has a scrapbook of the race club's publicity and the early reports on the name Tyrer Park were not favourable.

The name was given its first public airing in January, 1980, when the club wrote to Livingstone Shire Council suggesting the name Tyrer Park "to honour Richard George Tyrer".

A two-paragraph newspaper cutting of that meeting states that council told the club the future name "should define the area" ... meaning a geographic name would be better.

The February 28, 1980 edition of the Capricornian carried a column called From the Grandstand by Spectator and this column suggested "Why not a Name the Racecourse event? The Livingstone Shire Council, rightly I think, suggested the organisers use a name denoting a particular area rather than someone's name.

"The big courses in most Australian and world cities are named after their district.

"Any VIPs in the club can be suitably rewarded with Life Membership."

An April 2, 1980, a newspaper cutting (a etter to the editor signed Stuart R Beak) suggested three names ... Sandringham Park after the Monty Beak family; Hedlow Park after the Athertons of Mt Hedlow and Tarangabah Park after the Ross family.

On April 17, 1980, a letter from Cr Dick Tennent was published. He said the Yeppoon Amateur Racing Club could call its course whatever it liked. The members had done the work and they should not have some name forced on them.

That was the end of the newspaper cuttings on this topic.

The day before, however, on April 16, details under a newspaper picture of a working bee at the course said the work was being carried out at "Tyrer Park".

Dick Tyrer is emotional about his family's name being linked with the racecourse ... he considers the name change to Keppel Park to be a "complete insult to our family".

On Tuesday afternoon he recalled the early days when he first proposed a race club be formed in Yeppoon.

The August 25, 1977 edition of the Capricornian carried a story headed "Horse, dog racing at Yeppoon?"

The story under the heading said: "A 66ha racing reserve owned by Livingstone Shire Council might become the scene for quarter horse, flat and greyhound racing if a steering committee's proposals for development come to fruition.

"Twenty-five people attended a meeting last week called to arouse interest in the project. The steering committee comprises: Dick Tyrer, Fred Lawn, Lindsay Evans and Ken Large." Dick Tyrer re-read that item and recalled paying for the advertisements to drum up interest.

By September 15, 1977, the former Yeppoon racecourse had been located and a newspaper picture showed steering committee members on part of the old track.

By October 6, 1977, a story told how the Yeppoon Amateur Race Club had been reformed at a public meeting at the Railway Hotel chaired by Cr Roy Wall (then shire chairman).

The newspaper cuttings continue with stories of a Cane Toad Derby to raise funds, working bees followed by barbecues, dances in Yeppoon Town Hall ... anything to raise funds for the race club.

Dick Tyrer recalled those days ... "All I wanted was somewhere to race my horses as did everyone else who was working so hard."

He didn't like dancing but dancing was a good fund-raiser in those days and the Yeppoon Town Hall had a lot of well-attended functions where everyone got stung for raffles and anything else that could move the race club closer to its first meeting.

The fund raisingwas a ticklish issue in those days and the club could have no part of it ... all money was raised in the name of the Yeppoon Recreation and Development Association.

That was a long name, so was the then official name ... "Racecourse and Recreation Reserve No. 614, Shire of Livingstone".

Secretary Dick Phillips, who was carrying out continual correspondence with solicitors t o the Department of Lands, the Minister for racing and the Livingstone Shire Council, decided a name change was in order.

According to the proposal under Dick Tyrer's name sent to all members recently regarding changing the name, "at a meeting of the entire committee, late in 1980, the honorary secretary, in reading the correspondence, stated that to simplify the identification ... he would henceforth refer to it as Tyrer Park.

The proposal said his reasons for doing this were threefold: "Firstly the continual use of the full title was time consuming; secondly, the name was in recognition of the dedication of the Tyrer family and their many friends working on the restoration, and thirdly, it would be in line with the names of the other established courses, Callaghan Park and Ferguson Park in Gladstone".

"The committee agreed with the honorary secretary and verbally confirmed that the course would be called Tyrer Park.

"I thanked the committeemen for honouring my family in such a manner, assuring them I would always do my best for the good of the club, racegoers and the great sport of racing," the proposal said.

Earlier in the proposal, Mr Tyrer said: "Ten years ago, my family and I were privileged to be part of a small group of enthusiastic people who dedicated themselves to physically restoring the abandoned racecourse ...".

He told how on weekdays, Joe Cullen, Fred Lawn and others not committed to a shop or office would "doze, rip and stick-rake the proposed track. "(My sons) Rick, Larry and I would go out as soon as we finished baking in the shop," the proposal said. (Tyrers owned a hot bread shop in Yeppoon at the time).

"At weekends, these persons, their families and friends would go around the track picking up the loose roots and sticks.

"A barbecue would be held at sundown and we all knew our labour would be rewarded by what we have today.

"I was honoured to be the leader of this happy-go-lucky `pack' of `stick-pickers'."

In his proposal to keep the name Tyrer Park, Dick Tyrer said over the years there had been `digs' at him about the name of the course from "persons ignorant of what Betty, Larry, Rick and I have done for the club without any thought of personal kudos".

In closing the proposal, he said: "The course bears my name because I was the captain of the team who won it back from the ironbark, mahogany and land developers."

It was an appeal to the heart ... an appeal to the people who recalled the early days, the hard times, the fund-raising.

It failed ... the members voted to• remove Tyrer Park and call the racecourse Keppel Park.

On Tuesday afternoon Dick Tyrer, when asked how he felt about the decision, replied: "Bloody shocking". He said he regarded the name Tyrer Park as a name covering all of his family, not just himself ... "We all lived, it, ate it, slept it for the past 12 years".

Asked would he accept a building named after the Tyrer family he did not hesitate: "I would not accept any building ... I would not want my name associated with it if it is not called Tyrer Park".

Asked whether he thought buildings should be named after other foundation members, he said he was "100 per cent behind it". He said one of those names had already been honoured at the club but it had since been painted out.

He doubted tourism was the reason for the name change ... "The day the course opened, September 23, 1981, 5000 people turned up to hear (then Racing Minister) Russ Hinze perform the official opening," he said.

"That was the biggest crowd this Coast has seen in 20 years. The course, known as Tyrer Park, was the biggest thing for tourism in 20 years."

Asked was he bitter, Dick Tyrer paused; he thought about the question then said: "Bitter?

No. We're racing people. We have to be good losers if that's the way it is."

He paused again then said: "Hey, we're still going to race horses there. We built it to race horses. Why shouldn't we go there?

"We built the bastard with help from 20 good people. Our machinery built and maintained that course for seven years."

Larry Tyrer, who along with his father, Dick, is a Life Member of the race club, said: "There's a good chance that in a few years the name will get changed back. It will get changed back!"

Footnote: Outside his house, Dick Tyrer was asked how many racehorses he owned ...

"Too many," was the reply. "Ask Betty; she'll tell you there's too many!"

A COMMUNITY effort by Capricorn Coast Society of Arts members resulted in 32 paintings being hung at Yeppoon Hospital last week ... they are for the patients and staff please anc of course for any visitors. The paintings will be changed every six months.

TWO days of ceremonies marked the dedication of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Inverness Park, Yeppoon.

The 575 square metre building was built from framework to finish during three days in mid\*...4uly by 590 volunteer workers.

On the weekend, hundreds of visitors from New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and Capricorn Coast residents were invited to the Kingdom Hall's dedication.

The programme was organised by Frank Richter who is presiding overseer of the Yeppoon congregation. The dedication talk was given on Saturday night by Jehovah's Witnesses Australian branch headquarters representative Jack Porter.

The congregation's history in Yeppoon was related by former residents Nell McKenzie (Rockhampton), Roger Johnston (Blackall), Bill Goodwin (Ipswich) and Mr Richter.

B GRADE SQUASH CAPRICORN Coast Squash Rackets B grade match-of-the-week was played between Fay Robinson and Alyson Macdonald.

Fay downed Alyson in five games with a narrow margin of two points. After winning the first two games 9-5, 9-2, Fay faltered under a comeback from Alyson 9-4, 9-0.

With what looked like curtain victory, Alyson crumbled in the fifth match and Fay asserted herself to come home the victor taking the game and match 9-4.

SINGING SHIP BOWLS SINGING Ship Indoor Bowls Club had a return visit to QRI Bowls Club last week and it was, once again, a good night of bowling despite the fact the Emu Park club was beaten.

Competition was keen, bowling was good and the afternoon was enjoyed by all.

NEW PLAYERS AT JUNIOR BASKETBALL ON Sunday, October 8, seven new players joined in the fun at the Queensland Recreation Council's Cooee Bay basketball stadium.

Sarah Ellerton was a newcomer to the under 8 group. She actively participated and deserves credit for a great first effort.

Melanie Elstob played her usual game, incorporating some fast breaks with good dribbling and many unsuccessful attempts at goal.

Melanie has been unlucky with her goal shooting attempts so far, but perseverance should soon bring her success.

Tina Ware and Rachel McCombe returned after a break and engaged themselves eagerly in the game.

One player worthy of note was Rhys Cassidy who displayed skill at intercepting the ball and attempting goals.

Game scorers with two each were Damien Barry and Matthew Kelso.

Michael Whitehead played a good under 10 game. He exhibited skills for playing defensively and halted many balls bound for the opposition's goal ring.

Emu Park bowls THE annual Emu Park v QRI match was t'eyed at Emu Park Bowls Club on Sundaywith %4() games of 25 ends by 64 bowlers.

Mrs Jahnke presented the Harold 'Doodles' Jahnke Memorial Shield to the winners ... Emu Park. Her attendance was appreciated by the bowlers.

QRI's Bill Welsh and his team was devastating in the first game, but came back to earth after lunch. Harry Butcher, Mavis Stenhouse, Marge Hines and Bill Welsh, 51 points, took out the top award for QRI. Yeppoon Ladies bowls YEPPOON Ladies Bowling Club plays Athelstane for the Pineapple Shield on Sunday, November 12 in Rockhampton.

The club is having its Christmas luncheon on Wednesday, December 6 at the sailing club.

"Competition director Hilda Villiers has had an operation on her foot and will be transferred to St Andrew's Yeppoon from St John's. She will appreciate visitors," Mrs McNamara said.

"She asked me to thank everyone for their cooperation in completing the fixtures on the top green.

Twilight chicken run at golf club EMU Park Golf Club is having a twilight chicken run every Friday evening during daylight saving with the first run on November 3.

The innovation was announced by club president Richie Robinson after Sunday's monthly meeting.

"The nine hole event is to be called a chicken run because there will be a rundown of prizes in frozen chickens," Mr Robinson said.

"The competition is open to everyone and is not limited to club players and recognised golfers. As long as people can hit a golf ball they are eligible to play."

Captain and competition organiser is Dave Logan, who is already captain of the successful Saturday Social Golf Competition.

Hit off time is from 4pm to 6pm and players will be sent off in groups as they arrive.

A handicap card is not required as the Callaway system will be used.

"The Callaway system is the fairest way of scoring in this situation as it permits inexperienced players an equal chance of winning a prize," Mr Logan said. "All players are levelled by the system.

"A fee of $3 will apply to all participants. The $3 fee applies to everybody and no distinction is made by way of age, sex or club affiliation.

"A large percentage of this fee will be returned to the participants by way of frozen chickens. The more players who participate, the more chickens given out."

Clubhouse facilities will be available from about 3.30pm until the finish of activities.

"I can see this activity being a good, healthy and inexpensive outing for the whole family.

This is what many families are looking for, and this is what we hope to give them," he said.

"There are many people opposed to daylight saving, but it is now to be a fact of life this summer," club providor Gordon Bowser said.

"Our attitude is to look for the best in everything and make the best of what we have. We believe that this Friday night chicken run is a positive way of using daylight saving to everyone's advantage."

Mr Robinson announced after the meeting that the existing hazard across number two fairway is to be excavated to a depth of three metres from the footbridge to the dam.

He said the soil would be used to extend some tees and other earth works.

"The additional water storage won't go amiss and the deeper hazard will speed up play.

Players won't waste time looking for balls they can't retrieve. Theywill simply take a drop, add a penalty and get on with the game."

All games during the week have been well attended and some good scores recorded.

Possibly the best scores for this week was Peter Malick's 74 off the stick for a nett 59 in Sunday's leftovers.

"This score will no doubt earn a large slice of the handicapper's knife which Peterwill accept with his usual humility.

"Margaret Rudd had a rare day in

Wednesday's mixedAmerican foursome. With an uneven number of players someone had to draw two partners. Margaret seemed a little unhappy at the start, but accepted her fate and played with two balls, one for each partner.

IT was a dismal day on Saturday for Capricorn Coast Cricket Club's second grade side when it was defeated after compiling a modest 94 on the first day and the Brothers side was 240 at stamps.

Brothers, after losing a wicket with the first ball of the second day, continued on to pass Coast's score with a solid fourth wicket partnership of 73.

The Rockhampton side was eventually dismissed for 195.

Coast wicket takers: P Huxtable 3 for 26; I Anderson 3 for 47; S Perkins 2 for 15; S Christie 1 for 24; W Kitchener 1 for 42.

Coast batted a second time and at stumps was.

3 for 61 with J Ingles not out 28.

Under the circumstances - a poor display by the Coast side - no man-of-the-match was awarded. • Coast plays Norths at Yeppoon Showground tomorrow (Saturday) in what organisers are hoping will be a more purposeful Coast side.

There is no gate charge and everyone is welcome to go along and cheer the Coast second grade side.

Al- 1 bR scoring a respectable 187, Capricorn Coast Cricket Club's third grade side, succumbed to a strong Etna Creek batting line-up.

Etna Creek's tally was 303 and the side won the first innings. The Coast bowling was headed with a fine performance by D May with six for 57 from 18 overs.

The Coast side batted a second time and at stumps was 6-95. M Barsby scored 22, P Marsh 20 and T Ellison was 25 not out.

The side plays Commonwealth at Saleyards ground, Rockhampton, tomorrow.

YEPPOON and District Tennis Association fixtures finals will be played on Saturday, tomorrow, at Daniel Park, starting at 12.30pm.

Division A Kangaroos, who finished the season on 125 points, play Hares on 121 points.

Koalas and Dingoes will play off for the wooden spoon.

In Division B, leading team Parrots, on 136 points, plays Cockatoos, who, with a good win last weekend, pipped Curlews for second place and finished with 119 points. Curlews play Emus in the other division B match.

Paid up club members will be subsidised on the evening.

New soccer executive YEPPOON United Soccer Club held its annual general meeting last week.

Out-going president Trevor Boon reported 1988/89 had been the club's most successful year with 240 children from Byfield, Yeppoon and Emu Park playing soccer on Saturday mornings.

HERE'S a saga anyone who has ever remodelled a home will understand ... everyone else should tuck this away in their mind for future reference. About a year ago, Vince Welsh took a day off from Cooee Bay Marine and did some work in the bathroom at home. He never finished it. Lesley, who has never nagged in her life, did offer the occasional suggestion that perhaps the work should be completed. Apparently it was ... but during that time of chaos Lesley decided the kitchen needed a few things done to bring it into the 20th century. Vince decided he could allocate about $2000 to the kitchen and got a quote for cupboards and so on. He was told the price would be "around S2000".

However, families being families, a few extras were added ... and the price climbed to $3000. Vince decided that was OK so the job started. Along the way, a family council of war decided a new stove would be nice. That was added. Then the splashbacks looked funny against the new cupboards; and they were added. Then, standing arm in arm looking at their new kitchen, it became obvious that the ceiling needed painting.

Lesley shot down to Irons and picked' ur paint and rollers. Vince, who prefer to spent., time on the water rather than addiing it to paint, did what any red-blooded husband would do ... he contacted a painter. It was only $60 to paint the kitchen ceiling and the painter could do it right away. A couple of hours later Lesley phones Vince and says the painter's nearly finished and now the room next to the kitchen looks odd with a different ceiling ... that ceiling was painted. Then the ceiling next to the second ceiling looked odd and that got a coat, too. That night, Vince went home, looked at his nice fresh home and decided the hallway ceiling needed a paint so the painter came back the next day and did that. But all this paint made a feature wall in the loungeroom look dowdy so Vince asked the painter to strip off the wallpaper and paint it. He was told it would be cheaper if Vince did it himself. Lesley, seeing her house being transformed before her eyes, did not want the wall to wind up like the bathroom. She stayed home from work the next day and stripped it herself. Unfortunately, something went wrong, horribly wrong. The paper came away together. with the Gyprock wall's paper backing. That night, Vince decided he'd put up a new wall the next day. So, he took a day off work and Lesley went in to hold the fort and Vince put up the new wall. Vince, still smiling, said this week he had shopped locally for everything and was proud of the finished job. His S2000 job had turned into something like $5500 but he was happy. Lesley, who overheard him tell the story got the impression she was the butt of some joke and asked for equal time ... everything was true up to the part where the wall collapsed. She reckons the previous owners had done something to that wall and it wasn't her fault it was damaged. But what Vince hadn't said was that the replacement wall he'd put in was a panel board and he'd hated it, loathed it, said it looked lousy when he came home and found that was what he had to install and had grumbled all day when he put it in ... and, as soon as it was finished, everyone who saw it said how nice it was and how they would like a similar wall and why not do another wall in the same material.

WHY such a long story on someone remodelling a kitchen? Well, many years ago when Suzy and "Old Baldy" bought an extremely old home at Clontarf, on Redcliffe Pensinsula, they proudly opened the front door of their possession ... and it fell off.

Rather than put in a new 4x4 post to replace the rotten one, they decided it would be nice to put glass right across the front to look at the view. They did. The view over the water was so nice it seemed silly not to knock out two walls and turn three pokey rooms into one big room to enjoy the view. They did ... then discovered the front of the house had been added after the main part had been built and the ceilings at the front were lower than the back. So they put in exposed dressed oregon beams under a gigantic Gyprock ceiling. It looked so nice they decided to put in Gyprock walls ... but after they had started they discovered the walls were so out of line they had to build false frames to wind up with straight Gyprock. Then there was the hole in the floor from where the walls had been removed ... and then there was the bank statement printed in exciting red (it didn't even match the trim on the gutters). That house is still there at Clontarf ... but for some reason, Suzy and "OB" don't pass that way \w , hen they go to Brisbane.
