• ABOVE: Livingstone Shire Council was visited by Sacred Heart Year seven students on Tuesday afternoon. Chairman &John Bowen raised a laugh from Mark McGrath, Roberto Grace, Gavin Kershaw and Judith Driscoll when he explained how he used the gavel to bring order to council meetings.

Roundabout on drawing board for James and Normanby Streets LIVINGSTONE Shire Council this week called for costings involved in providing a roundabout at the intersection of James, Normanby and Hill Streets ... a move that would rearrange Yeppoon Shopping Centre traffic flow. Shire engineer Pat Murphy was told to prepare costings for consideration during coming pre-budget meetings. The decision was made after councillors were shown two proposals to handle traffic flow at the intersection. While only "roughs'', the two proposals clearly showed proposed traffic flow. The first

plan's biggest asset, according to Mr Murphy, was that it would be cheap to implement. But he doubted the proposal would serve Yeppoon's long-term needs. The roundabout proposal was met with a more positive response from councillors. It will be more expensive but, in the preliminary sketch, showed promise of becoming an attractive addition to the shopping centre. When describing both proposals, Mr Murphy said he had been conscious of the siting of Yeppoon Police Station and the need for police vehicles to flow quickly from the station. Another consideration was the Cenotaph. Mr

Murphy said the roundabout appeared to handle traffic needs without any change to the cenotaph's location. Cr Maurie Webb questioned how many parking spaceswould be lost to the roundabout and when told only one would disappear from in front of the cinema, he asked how a motorist could park in the space that had been left. Mr Murphy said the parking space could be entered by reverse parking. Following on from this discussion, Mr Murphy questioned the need for people to park directly in front of the shop they wanted to visit. He said in bigger cities people would be happy

to get a parking space. where-ever it was. In general discussion while viewing the roundabout proposal, councillors agreed- the roundabout offered the best solution for longterm traffic needs. Cr Brian Dorey was enthusiastic. He said there had been a lot of discussion in the past regarding a mall in either Normanby Street or Hill Street and the roundabout would fit in with either plan. Cr John Dowie moved and Cr Lloyd Webber seconded a motion to have Mr Murphy prepare costings for consideration in pre-budget discussions.
