Pineapple Festival fun packs into new format A REVAMPED five-day format for the Pineapple Festival has packed the fun and excitement into a shorter period culminating this weekend. The highlight, the Pineapple Festival procession, starts its trek through Yeppoon today, (Saturday) at 1pm. It marks the 21st time Coast businesses and • organisations have dressed up for the crowds. The festival is like a seed that grew and blossomed into something visitors and Coast people look forward to each year. One of the organisers, Cr Brian Dorey, said he expected this festival to be bigger and better than past years. Although the same number of decorated floats is expected, a bigger representation of business houses is anticipated. Cr Dorey said at lot of interest was being shown in this year's festival and "all the

community is talking about it". Both visitors and locals enjoy seeing the many colourful floats swoop past, many carrying Pineapple Princesses. At one stage in the past, the festival took 10 days from start to finish, but the organisers, Yeppoon Lions Club, revamped it this year to contain it within five days. The festival has already been underway three days. The official opening was held on Wednesday during the Capricorn Society of Arts Exhibition, which continues until today. Pets galore, weird and wonderful, were presented for judging during the week and, for the gardeners, a day-long garden and trade-fair was popular on Wednesday. A beachfront Mardi Gras, on Friday night, ended with a fireworks display and kept the crowd entertained for hours. This morning (Saturday) entertainment starts with a 9.30am fashion parade in Save-

more Centre followed by another Mardi Gras, until 4pm, in Beaman Park. At midday, all the fun of woodchops comes to a head when S400 over four sections is up for grabs. The annual procession sets out at 1pm followed by Woody's 1000 at 2pm. The big moment for the nine young princesses is the crowning of the Pineapple Queen and Charity Queen during the Calypso Cabaret tonight. Another feature will be Brisbane-based band Trinidad Calypso which will entertain during the weekend. Sunday is for the 'big-kids' who enjoy fun, laughter and games. A treasure hunt, crab race, scallop-peeling competition, beach-game bonanza including sand shovelling, hole filling and crazy ball games, will entertain for hours. The festival closes at 4.30pm, Sunday.

. SIXTEEN Coast Vietnam Veterans headoff this weekend for their welcome home march in Sydney ... also to meet mates not seen since returning from the conflict. Some travelled by train, others caught buses or planes and some drove. Some will share this moment with their families; others have decided to march alone. Half of the veterans are members of the newly-formed Legion on the Coast and the others are Coast residents. A full programme of events has been organised for the weekend which started last night with unit smokos (reunions) at different Returned Service League clubs in Sydney. There will be an early start today with a 4.30am dawn service at the Sydney Cenotaph. Veterans will begin to muster in their individual units to prepare for the march, which is expected to begin about 9am. At 2pm, the main reunion for all veterans will start and will finish later tonight. After church services on Sunday, many veterans will attend a concert at the Domain. Monday has been set aside for tours and other activities but many Coast veterans will begin their return journey.
