Hartwig wants better name for shire to promote Coast LIVINGSTONE Shire Chairman Cr Lindsay Hartwig, MLA, will strongly sponsor a move to have the shire's name changed now that it is contained within the State Seat of Livingstone.

He favours the name Capricorn Coast Shire Council.

His reason for the name change is to avoid confusion between the shire's name and the new State seat.

"When people are asked where they live they won't be able to adequately describe the area," Cr Hartwig said on Wednesday night.

"There will be confusion over what people mean by Livingstone ... the State seat encompasses the shire, but extends beyond it. It has to be changed."

Cr Hartwig favours the name Capricorn Coast Shire Council because he says it will put the place on the map.

"The question 'where do you live?' and the answer 'the Capricorn Coast' will mean something," he said.

"With that name we would become like the Gold Coast ... an identifiable area."

Cr Hartwig has been opposed to the name Livingstone Shire since the Cities and Towns Conference held earlier this year and hosted by his council.

"Livingstone doesn't mean anything geographically," he said at the time.

"Rockhampton City is just that, Rockhampton city, a place on the map. But Livingstone exists only in dusty electoral archives and on electoral maps."

He sees the likelihood of opposition to the name change ... especially from the people in divisions three and four. He also expects solid support for the change from tourist industry leaders.

"The tourism groups should get behind this name-change move right from this moment," he said.

"They'll have a name they can sell ... it says it all. We are on the Tropic of Capricorn so there is a logical reason for the name.

"We are the gateway to the tropics ... the place Southerners dream about in Winter.

The change of name will help us be identified with those dreams."

Cr Hartwig said the name change was not only prompted by the new seat of Livingstone ... "it's been talked over in council before today, but nothing concrete has been done about it."

But the name of the new seat goaded him into action on Wednesday.

"I'll bring it up in council next week.

Perhaps we should ask the school kids and residents what they think? I think council should have a good look at this and possibly put up a prize for the best new name," he said.

"But I'll be supporting Capricorn Coast Shire Council ... it has a certain ring to it."

SEVEN memorial blocks will be unveiled in James Street on Monday as part of the Remembrance Day ceremony in Yeppoon.

The blocks each have two brass plaques set into them, in memory of men and women who died in World War I, making a total of 14 names.

A palm tree will be planted on each side of the blocks so that there will be a tree in honour of each person's honour.

The new plaques are similar in design to those erected in Yeppoon's main streets in 1921. They have gradually disappeared since then.

RSL secretary Mery Scope said the league had been trying to get the plaques replaced for two years, and these were the first to be unveiled. Other plaques in memory of people who died in World War ll,Vietnam and Korea he hopes will be unveiled on Australia Day next year.

Monday's unveiling will take place after one minute's silence at the Cenotaph in Beaman Park. RSL president Hugh Cochrane will introduce Livingstone Shire Council chairman Cr Lindsay Hartwig, MLA. Cr Hartwig will then invite school representatives to unveil six blocks, after he and Mr Cochrane have unveiled the first one.

Yeppoon primary and high schools, St Brendan's and St Ursula's Colleges, Farnborough School and Sacred Heart School representatives will each unveil a block.

The blocks are in James Street between Mary and Hill Streets.

Others are planned to continue along James Street so that Yeppoon's main street will have a double row of palms in memory of those who died in four wars.

• PARENTS-to-be in Yeppoon will hav4 their last opportunity for this year to attend free Birth Preparation Programmes at Yeppoon Hospital.

The trend to share together in the preparation and the actual birth is increasingly evident as more and more fathers-to-be attend these free film and :discussion evenings regularly provided by the Health Department and the hospital.

The programme starts at 7.30pm on Wednesday, November 13 at Yeppoon hospital and continues for four Wednesdays.

The first session looks at pre-natal care including relaxation and exercises.

The second session discusses the actual birth process with detailed illustrations on film.

Post natal care and an inspection of the labour ward are part of the third session.

The final session looks at bathing the newborn and a discussion on planning any future family.

The programme is an ideal opportunity for both parents-to-be to have questions answered by physiotherapist, medical and nursing professionals in a comfortable atmosphere in addition to the educational film and literature provided.

Bell Park pony rides A ROCKHAMPTON couple were granted permission to conduct pony rides in Bel' Park and lower Appleton Park during th, school holidays.

Mr and Mrs J Fuller of Grace Street, Rockhampton wrote to Livingstone Shire Council asking if they could run pony rides in Bell Park, where the proposed Emu Park swimming pool will go.

Council approved a licence for the rides on three conditions.

These were: that adequate standards of public safety, to include public risk insurance, be provided; manure be disposed of daily; and the entertainment fees being paid.

26 taken to hospital after chlorine gas forms from 2 cleaning agents TWENTY-SIX people were taken to Yeppoon Hospital on Wednesday morning, suffering from chlorine gas inhalation, but none of them was seriously affected.

The people were working at Tanby Ice on Tanby Road, and inhaled the chlorine gas when two cleaning agents were mixed.

Livingstone Shire Council health surveyor Stephen Kent said he understood that a chlorine-based and an acid-based cleaning agent were mixed, giving off chlorine gas.

But he said scallops being peeled on the premises were not contaminated by the gas, and were usually washed down with chlorinated water anyway to clean them.

The first three people to suffer from the gas were taken to Yeppoon Ambulance Centre at 10.45am.

Ambulance superintendent Geoff Reynolds said they were taken to Yeppoon Hospital for treatment, and then the centre received another call to Tanby Ice. Mr Reynolds said a few more people were feeling the chlorine symptons.

These appeared to be nausea, dizziness then shortness of breath and coughing.

Three ambulances were used to carry another 22 people to Yeppoon Hospital in relays.

Mr Reynolds said at one stage Rockhampton called, asking if Yeppoon needed assistance, but wasn't needed.

One ambulance used its siren once, to warn Tanby Ice it was approaching.

"Although we understand the cleaning mixture was used very early in the morning, hardly anyone was immediately affected by it. People came down with the symptoms gradually, and were all affected in different ways," he said.

By 12.30pm all 25 people were in Yeppoon Hospital.

Yeppoon Hospital's medical superintendentt said he treated all 26 people, including the cleaner who used the solution which gave off the gas.

Of those, 13 were admitted, and six stayed overnight in Yeppoon Hospital. Another was transferred to Rockhampton Base Hospital, but that was for his convenience because he lived in Rockhampton.

The superintendent said that as well as. symptoms noted by ambulance officertl some people had watering eyes, burning—' nose and throat and a "pins and needle" effect in their limbs and lips.

He said no-one was seriously affected by the gas.

`Quite possible' Hartwig will stand for new Seat...as a party candidate 0 By John Watson MEMBER for Callide Cr Lindsay Hartwig, MLA, said on Wednesday it was "quite possible" he would stand for the new State seat of Livingstone ... representing a party.

The new Yeppoon-based seat was announced this week. For Cr Hartwig it means the next election will end his association with the seat of Callide, the seat he has held since 1972.

Now an Independent, Cr Hartwig had previously announced he would never again stand for Callide ... "but the seat of Livingstone is another matter," he said on Wednesday night.

He is confident he can win Livingstone as an Independent ... but he has said previously that he does not intend closing his Parliamentary career as an Independent.

It is believed he has had overtures from the Liberals to join their depleted ranks ... and there is speculation that the National Party would welcome him back. There has been speculation that he has swung to Labor.

Whoever wins will have office in Yeppoon WHOEVER wins the new seat of Livingstone will have his office in Yeppoon, Member for Callide and shire chairman Cr Hartwig said on Wednesday night.

The seat was based on Yeppoon and had a semi-rural flavour. "It's been tailor-made for the National Party," he said.

There could be objections to the new seat of Livingstone, but he doubted they would be successful.

"Everyone has a month to lodge their objections," he said. . As the Member for Callide, a seat that, most likely, one month from now, will be based at Biloela, Cr Hartwig said he would still continue to represent the old area.

"That's my job, the job I was elected to do," he said. "The fact that there were no more votes to be won in the old seat had nothing to do with it.

He sees Livingstone as "an easier seat to work". It was based at Yeppoon with big area to the north-west made up of large properties.

"I would have thought there would have been more mining towns in the new seat," he said on Wednesday while looking at a map of the seat.

"The way this seat has been made up, there's 8000 electors in the Livingstone shire and a further 4000 in the rest of the seat," he said.

"It definitely winnable for the National Party ... unless a good Independent stands!"

He said there was a "touch of sadness" about the shift in position of Callide, meaning that he would not represent that seat after the next election.

"The seat was created in 1936 and has only had two Members, the late Vin Jones and me," he said. "Callide has been very good to me."

The only established party his name has not been associated with is the Democrats ... but Cr Hartwig, while returned as an Independent in the 1983 State election, is likely to feel more comfortable with party backing.

The work involved in mounting a political campaign is enormous. There are a thousand-and-one details to be attended to ... and party supporters look after most of them. An Independent has to do considerably more work himself ... nitpicking work such as booking halls for addresses, arranging transport for elderly voters to polling booths, finding accommodation for overnight stops when on the hustings.

These are the details that can be handled by a party branch in each area to be visited ... for an Independent, they are almost insurmountable problems.

Cr Hartwig's campaign in late 1983 was backed by a core of solid supporters, many normally National Party people, who saw him as the only one to represent them, whether as a party man or Independent.

But this support cannot be counted on for a second run as an Independent ... many gave their support, and vote, on condition that he stayed an Independent forever, or never voted with the ALP, or for any other reason.

Not all of them will be happy with his performance ... they couldn't expect to be.

But, as a party politician, Cr Hartwig, a proven vote-getter, could command a big following in the new seat of Livingstone.

But which party? Cr Hartwig isn't saying.

The ALP appears, on the surface, to be out.

The Liberals have a big chance. Cr Hartwig has often commented that the Liberals look set for major gains at the next State election because "the people don't want the ALP but they want an alternative to the government".

But the seat of Livingstone, in Cr Hartwig's words, is semi-rural based, and therefore likely to represent a solid vote for the National Party. That leaves the National Party as the most likely party Cr Hartwig will represent should he decide to stand for Livingstone.

How will he return to the fold? He says it won't be by his making application to rejoin ... the risk is too high that, if his timing is not right, he could be rejected.

The only way he seems likely to return to the National Party is "by invitation," his words.

Only time will tell if the invitation is extended ... if it is, it is probable Cr Hartwig will accept it.

But he won't entertain too much speculation ... "I keep saying it; a week is a long time in politics ... and it's likely to be 13 months before the next election," he said.

Efforts were made throughout Wednesday afternoon and night to contact Yeppoon Branch National Party chairman Alan Stevenson and ALP president Chris Palmer but they were unavailable.

FOOTNOTE: Cr Hartwig nominates the first Saturday in December, 1986, as the date for the next State election. "Joh (Premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen) will stay in office as long as he can," Cr Hartwig said.

MRD police greet race-day floats MAIN Roads Department police pulling over horse floats approaching Tyrer Park racecourse on Melbourne Cup Day were not part of a purge, it was claimed this week.

A spokesman for • the Main Roads Department in Brisbane said the police would have been carrying out their normal duties and the Cup Day patrol was definitely not part of a purge.

However racegoers were far from amused with the police ... it spoilt the Cup Day "atmosphere".

Vehicles turning from Yeppoon-toRockhampton Road into Barmaryee Road were greeted by the Main Roads police.

A number of people at the racecourse said every horse float taking gallopers to the Tyrer Park meeting was pulled over ... but the spokesman in Brisbane could not confirm this.

The spokesman said he had no knowledge of their day-to-day activities and, as far as he knew, they would have been carrying out their "routine surveillance".

Asked why they happened to be conducting "routine surveillance" at the approach to a racecourse on Melbourne Cup Day, the spokesman said: "I can't answer that."

Asked exactly what was a Main Roads Department police officer, the spokesman said "the men in blue, not brown" were Queensland police seconded to the MRD for transport duties.

They were stationed all over the State "particularly where there was a district MRD office".

When they checked out a vehicle, they issued a defect notice if anything was found to be wrong.

Told that the Capricorn Coast Mirror had received a report that vehicles had been checked out in James Street, Yeppoon, on the same day, the spokesman said that they would probably be in the "general area" for some time.

They would not only be looking at horse floats and box trailers ... they check at vehicles.

COAST girl Joy-Marie Bailey received a cheque for $264.39 this week on behalf of World Vision, for money she and two of her friends raised in a bike-a-thon.

Joy-Marie had the idea of raising money for Ethiopian famine victims after the Live Aid concert, and thought of a bikeathon.

Then she. convinced Bill Pidcock and Deanne McDonald to also go in the bikeathon.

After getting sponsorship and weeks of training, the three started from Yeppoon Life Saving Club on September 14, and pedalled to the Singing Ship.

Sponsorship money was collected at the Commonwealth Bank, and this week a cheque for more than $250 was handed to Joy-Maree to be sent to World Vision, and finally to Ethiopia.

A TWO-DAY conference of chief public librarians attended by Yeppoon library's June Foreman was both "informative and worthwhile for its exchange of ideas."

Miss Foreman last month attended the Fifth Annual Conference of Chief Public Librarians held in Cotton Tree near Maroochydore.

She said it was a rewarding experience, where she met delegates from as far south as Stanthorpe,.as far north as Johnstone Shire and west to Mt Isa. Shf was also able to meet State library staff and representatives from public Libraries Services.

The first morning of the conference was spent discussing the Report of the Committee of Review of the State Library of Queensland, and its recommendations for desirable standards for public libraries including services, staffing and funding.

The afternoon was mainly spent discussing new technology and its application in pubic libraries.

Miss Foreman said a number . of Queensland's public libraries were converting from their cumbersome manual methods to automated systems which streamline the procedures for borrowing books and quickly update catalogues.

Miss Foreman and other Queensland delegates spent the second day of the coference in workshops, comparing day-today issues affecting public libraries.

She said the conference was informative, and there was a worthwhile exchange of ideas.

SES to 'rescue' EMU PARK SES had its second simulated accident in five months on Saturday.

Training officer Rick Nagle said the scenario was a wounded child at the bottom of a cliff, who was totally incapacitated.

SES members had to take her up the cliff face on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance and two ambulance officers.

The ambulance then took her to an Emu Park doctor.

Mr Nagle said everything went well, despite the driving rain which added realism.

Charter night for Coast's Toastmasters CAPRICORN Coast Toastmasters Club held its charter night on Saturday with 28 charter members ... the highest number for a new toastmasters club in Queensland.

The charter night was attended by about 100 members and guests, who watcher Toastmasters district governor Dianne Riddell hand the charter over to Coast club president John Bowen.

The club's new banner and timing lights were presented by the Rockhampton and Boomerang clubs' presidents Narda Wieland and Bill Aspden.

A lectern made by St Brendan's College students was presented by Fiona Cameron in appreciation of seven years of youth leadership courses conducted at the college

by Rockhampton Toastmasters clubs.

Guest speaker for the night was Dr Christopher Alroe, a clinical psychologist newly appointed to Central Queensland.

Coast club members John Duffy, Morag Clay and Fiona Cameron also gave speeches.

Mr Bowen said guests were "pleasantly shocked" by the standard of the charter night.

"It's a misconception that Toastmasters is just for those interested in public speaking.

Toastmasters can help people interested in improving their ability to communicate in business and social fields.

"Parliamentary procedure is another important aspect covered by Toastmasters — an essential element for people who are involved in any type of club, association or politics."

The club meets fortnightly at the Keppel Bay Sailing Club on Wednesdays, starting at 6.45pm.

Mr Bowen said anyone who wanted to join Toastmasters would be made welcome. Five new members were already joining.

Organisers advise to be early for best view of Pineapple procession COAST residents and visitors are advised to get their places early for seeing the Pineapple Festival procession march through the streets of Yeppoon on Saturday.

The parade is one of the highlights of the festival's final weekend of activities, and one that attracts crowds, filling the main street.

Festival committee secretary Dave Curtis said procession floats would gather in Queen Street between Hill Street and Anzac Parade at noon.

He suggested people who wanted a good position to see the parade should also gather at midday.

"We expect a good roll-up of floats, and large crowds to see them," he said.

The Festival Wheelbarrow Derby starts at 12.30pm at the Railway Hotel, with pairs of competitors wheeling each other down James and Normanby Streets between stops for beer.

The race finishes at the Strand Hotel.

The procession moves off down Anzac Parade at 1pm, before turning into Normanby Street, continuing down James Street and to Yeppoon Showground via Park Street.

Music for the day is being supplied by the Police Pipe Band from Brisbane, the Rockhampton City and Silver Bands and the Rockhampton Pipe Band.

Mr Curtis said this was the first year nomination forms had been used for procession floats, and it was taking people a while to get Used to them," he said.

• "While we've had forms handed in, most people will just turn up on the day, so until then, we're not sure exactly how many floats will be in the procession."

Some entries already confirmed in the procession are the Peter Brock Commodore of Bathurst fame and a group of three pink Mini-Mokes surrounded by 25 to 30 girls in black leotards with pink sashes to match.

The Brock Commodore is being entered

by Dave Turner of D. and S. Motors, who has the car for one day as part of a Mobil promotion.

Mr Turner said the car would be picked up from Rockhampton this morning and brought to Yeppoon for the procession.

It will be at the showground while other events are held, before being taken back to D. and S. Motors.

The three pink Mini-Mokes and girls in pink satin sashes are part of a combined promotion by Seafood and Eat It and Capricorn Coast Rent-A-Moke.

Other businesses and community groups have also lodged their nomination forms, including a firm with a new pineapple irrigator and a combined float by the St James Youth Group, Yeppoon Kindergarten and CEBS. But the entertainment doesn't stop in the streets ... it continues on to Yeppoon Showground with more marching and music from the Police Pipe Band, the woodchops and displays.

Displays of fire fighting, motorcycles, trikes and Odesseys are sure to attract crowds, and a pineapple-picking race is open to seasoned and new hands.

A "Let's Go Tropical" night at Yeppoon Town Hall at 8pm will finish off the day, with the crowning of the Pineapple Festival Queen and Charity Queen.

Sunday activity starts early at Rosslyn Bay, with the America's Krapp Cup raft race at 9am, followed by a Surf Ski race from Yeppoon to the harbour at 9.30am.

A Rubber Duck rate starts at Rosslyn Bay at 11am, with .other harbour happenings at noon.

These include a trawler steam past, scallop-peeling competition, deckies' dinghy derby and a scallop-peelers fashion show.

CAPRICORN Coast Squash Club's open championship held last weekend was successful with 130 players competing from all over Queensland.

"It was pleasing to see the higher standard of play," CCSC president John Briggs said.

"Because of the long matches the time schedule was hard to maintain. But the standard was so much higher in the men's and women's division."

Mr Briggs congratulated all players who won trophies and said he thought the players had competed in the true spirit of the game.

"A special mention was made of assistant

secretary Anne Perrin," club publicity officer Jim McDonald said. "Her tireless effort in securing trophies from local business houses and general organisation contributed to a grand weekend of squash."

Some club members will travel to Blackwater to play squash in a fortnight.

The Tina Turner Trip to Toowong (?) is on later this month.

The Lioness Old Time Music Hall on Saturday night had almost a full house, with 95 people enjoying a full programme of 13 items.

Lioness president Jacky Hole said the audience responded well, and booed, hissed and cheered in all the appriopriate places.

A full house of 130 packed the wine and cheese night on Tuesday.

Festival committee secretary Dave Curtis said the Savemore Centre was filled to capacity with people thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Mr Curtis said the businesses had dressed their windows in the pineapple theme, winning them the prizes.

EXTENSIONS and equipment worth $180,000 at St Ursula's College was officially opened and blessed on Sunday afternoon.

The extensions include computer and audio-visual rooms,two classrooms, an administration block and extensions to the staffroom.

College principal Sr Marion Kingston said the workd had been paid for by fund-raising, the college's building fund and a loan.

She said the college would now apply for an interest subsidy grant to help pay the interest on money borrowed.

The extensions were in use by the college's 225 students already, but they were officially opened and blessed at 4.30pm on Sunday by Bishop Wallace of Rockhampton Diocese.

The opening was attended by 500 students, parents and friends, before a barbecue with entertainment by the students.

Sr Marion said the extensions were the first since the recreation hall was built in 1977.

A RECENT- trip to a casino in Launceston has prompted shire chairman Cr Lindsay Hartwig, MLA, to -propose a country club-style casino as the -means to extend Rockhampton airport.

Addressing a meeting of the Capricorn Tourism Development Organisation on Wednesday, Cr Hartwig said a casino in Central Queensland would change Federal thinking about the airport.

"We have to show a need for a longer airstrip with a more sophisticated terminal," he. said after the meeting.

"Putting a casino in Central Queensland, preferably on the Capricorn Coast, would create that need."

He said the Launceston terminal was lavish in comparison with Rockhampton's.

"The same two airlines use both airports but they can find the money to spend in Launceston which never seems available for Rockhampton. We're treated as thirdclass citizens," he said.

TOURISM, Sport and Recreation Minister John Brown was given a tour of the delights of the Capricorn Coast region on Friday.

The day was one of informality, with Mr Brown setting the mood by saying "call me Brownie" when someone addressed him as "Sir." Mr Brown, Member for Capricornia Keith Wright,Livipgstone Shire Council deputychairman (r Keith Hinchliffe and Capricorn Coast Tourist Organisation and Capricorn Tourism and Development Organisation delegates toured the Coast.

The Minister's first stop was at Ross' Run, where he looked at the way Australian life used to be.

From there, the Minister went to the Capricorn Iwasaki Resort for morning tea to cuddle Central Queensland koalas, fondle crocodiles and play a few holes of golf.

Keppel Cat 1 took Mr Brown to Great Keppel Island, where he and Keppel Island resort manager Roger Moyle led the delegation around the resort's accommodation.

As Mr Brown stepped off the boat onto the ramp, he joked "I'm apolitical — I'm atourist".

When he set foot on the sand he looked around at the white beach and blue water lapping at his feet, and said "I've discovered Australia".

After touring the resort, the Minister and guests sat down to a smorgasbord meal.

During lunch, Mr Wright announced that a "total package selling Central Queensland" that would "break down the parochialism" would be worked out for "the New Year".

Horst Simon (Como Units) replied that the guests had enjoyed Mr Brown's company, and he thought "we have the best boy in Canberra here."

After lunch, Graham McCamley flew Mr Brown and guests over Curtis Island to see the site for a proposed resort, before finishing the day at Rockhampton airport.

Arts society to seek gallery funding THE CAPRICORN Coast Society of Arts will apply to the Queensland Arts Council and the Arts Minister's Department for funding for promotion of the Paint Pot Gallery.

Society president Marie Bayliss said finding the gallery rental was a worry, and the gallery was hoping to promote itself more.

"We want to send out advertising dodgers to attract more people, and put up direction

signs for the gallery," Mrs Bayliss said.

"We have permission from Livingstone Shire Council for the signs, but some already put up have been taken down."

Mrs Bayliss said the gallery opened in May, 1984, selling work by local artists, potters and china painters.

Since then, it has attracted locals and some tourists from the United States, Japan and New Zealand.

Trikes, Odesseys get OK for beach APPROVAL has been given to Aquaventure to hire up to six trikes and Odesseys at Fisherman's Beach, Emu Park.

Livingstone Shire Council gave its permission at its meeting last month, ratifying a recommendation from the water, sewerage and health committee.

A "TOTAL PACKAGE" for tourism in Central Queensland will be announced next year by Member for Capricornia Keith Wright and Tourism, Sport and Recreation Minister John Brown.

The announcement was made by Mr Wright at a dinner at the Great Keppel Island resort in honour of Mr Brown.

Mr Brown was visiting the Capricorn Coast on Friday, and spent the day visiting the Capricorn Iwasaki Resort before travelling to Great Keppel Island and flying over Curtis Island.

Mr Wright announced the tourism package during lunch, saying a total package for CQ would be announced in "the New Year" that would "break down parochialism."

He was answered by Horst Simon (Como Units), who said all at the luncheon agreed they "loved Mr Brown", and thought they had the "best boy in Canberra" to see the Capricorn Coast, whatever political party they belonged to.

Mr Brown had said earlier in the day: "I'm apolitical — I'm a tourist."

The guest speaker is Clair Martin, a registered nurse who is in private practice as a diabetic educator in Rockhampton.

Blanche Boorman told of the South American cowry which is eaten by the natives.

Ena Coucom displayed a box of Australian edible shells and gave personal opinions on flavours and preparations of shellfish.

More donations of shells, cash and prizes were received by the club for the cent sale on November 8.

Dorelle Scott won the monthly competition.

The date for the club's Christmas party is Saturday, December 14.

The women had come together to wish many happy returns to fellow club member Evelyn Seeman, who that day was celebrating her 80th birthday.

The atmosphere of cup day was made evident when May Hobkirk and Vi Rcbson arrived in race day gear, though not the style on the lawns of Flemington that afternoon.

In keeping with the spirit of the day, a sweep was run on the cup and everyone was pleased when the guest of honour drew the winner — What a Nuisance.

Other prizes went to Lois Crockett, May Hobkirk, Jean Whiteacre and Rowena Stevens.

During afternoon tea Evelyn cut a birthday cake to the singing of 'Happy Birthday'.

LAST Monday a busload of members of the Yeppoon Pensioners' League celebrated the 25th anniversary of the league's formation with a visit to the Rockhampton Botanic Gardens.

The following morning tea the Yeppoonites spent an enjoyable 90 minutes viewing the colourful nursery plants and visiting the animals.

Two and a half hours shopping at the K"Mart shopping centre at North Rockhampton wound up an enjoyable day.

Members were appreciative of silver anniversary greetings in the form of a card from Yeppoon-Emu Park District Ambulance superintendent Geoff Reynolds and his wife, Kathy, which was passed among those on the bus. The congratulating message will be read to the next monthly meeting of the league.

Sun' 'UM* Celaffige EMU PARK Pensioners League had 170 people at the social on October 30.

The afternoon concert stated with a cabaret scene by the Evergreens, whose song and dance combined with the music of pianist-conductor Wyn Nelson, made the scene a hit.

George Cooper entertained with some favourite numbers on the mouth organ. Very welcome soloists were: Mrs Laver, Dot Close, D Svensen, Lorna McIntyre and Stan Nelson.

Duets for the afternoon were Crystal Philps and Ethel Cowap and Stan Nelson and Ella Lewis.

Wyn Nelson and Les Wessells on piano and saxaphone were also appreciated by the large audience.

Joe McIntyre showed that poems were also the audiences favourites.

The Yeppoon singing group, The Entertainers, presented some delightful group singing.

Ethel Cowap and George Bardrick touched on a lighter side of life with their skit `courting'.

The Rockhampton singers, The Bohemians, were also well received.

Pearl Curry delighted the crowd with her song and dance routines. The Crazy Billabong Bush Band entertained with some lifely numbers from the Charleston era and they were dressed appropriately.

The country sing-a-long was enjoyed by everyone.

Mrs Rumble of North Rockhampton won the lucky door prize. Joe McIntyre was first in the raffle, Beryl Connors second and Mrs Lauchard, third.

The next social is on November 27.

CAPRICORN Coast Writers are inviting contributions for a collection of short stories, ,articles, poems, bush yarns and other ,original writing to be published next year.

The group published a book called ,"Capricorn Coast Writers 1985" this year 'and launched it at the Yeppoon Show.

Following its success they have decided to ;do a collection for next year that they hope 'will be better and bigger.

RITA EDMISTONE won the associates' stableford at Yeppoon Golf Club's Wednesday club with 35 points.

The first nine nett winner was Eileen Larman with 35 and May McGlashan won the second nine with 311/2. Beryl Taylor and Nancy Montgomery won the pinshots. The proshot was won by Marge Williams.

Ossie McCurtayne won the members' stableford with 42 points. Nev Cooper, Bob Miller, Edgar Shields and Charlie Williams all had 40 points.

Mick Busteed won the first nine with 271/2 followed by E Shields on 291/2, R Miller 301/2 while Tom Edmistone, Mery Scope and John Burton all were on 31 nett.

The second nine winner was Peter Hogan with 27 followed by J Burton 28, R Miller 301/2, Frank Ryan 32 and Ray Hansen 30.

G Norton and J Cahill won the pinshots and C Williams the proshot.

Captain Jack Stratford was presented with a birthday cake to celebrate his 74th birthday.

"I thank all those who were responsible for the cake. It was a wonderful surprise," publicity officer Jack Stratford said.

Karate students have Olympic potential: instructor Chris Bulbrook looks to 1992...

A CENTRAL Queensland Shotokan karate instructor believes some of his students could win selection in the Australian team for the 1992 Olympics.

Instructor Chris Bulbrook said he believed that given the right training, there was no reason why some of his students could not win selection and a placing at the Olympics.

Karate was officially accepted into the Olympics in June.

CQ Karate Club publicity officer Rada Radosevic said Mr Bulbrook had his eye on the Olympics long before the official announcement, and his ambition was that the entire Australian team should come from CQ. "Technically, Bulbrook's students are equal to the world standard, but Australian sportsmen don't have the time or finance to train and compete as their European counterparts," she said.

"In those countries the government sponsors all training and competitions."

There are two Olympic-recognised karate organisations holding championships in Australia as a lead up to the Olympics.

The World Union Karate Organisation is holding its world championship in Sydney next year, and the International Amateur Karate Federation is holding its world championship in Brisbane in 1988.

Rada Radosevic said the championships would be a wonderful opportunity for Australian students to aim for, even if they were only spectators.

"November is going to be a busy month for association members," president Peg Hansen said.

"First there are the finals.

"Then on Saturday, November 16, Ann Devlin of Salon 24 is holding a 'Cut-a-Thon' for us. So, we are asking members and nonmembers to book early and get their hair cut with Ann," Mrs Hansen said.

"Ann has just returned from the south where she saw some wonderful new ideas for hair cutting."

The association will draw its 100s club on Sunday, November 17 at the courts in Daniel Park, Cooee Bay. All ticket holders and their families are invited to a barbecue at 4.30pm, after a game of tennis, if they wish. The drawing will be during the barbecue.

TAROOM trainer Bill Cogill and owner Bob Scott emerged as Central Queensland's Melbourne Cup Day cups' kings when they combined to take out the feature events at Yeppoon and Wowan on Tuesday.

At the first Melbourne Cup day meeting held at Tyrer Park the pair combined to take out the feature Morning Bulletin Yeppoon Cup (1420m) with the even money favourite, Rare Tatten.

After the scratching of the logical favourite, Australian Star, the Taroom visitor won as a punters' elect by easily winning from Behabd and Rosencrantz.

Rare Tatten gave Yeppoon's 1984-85 premier jockey, David Rewald, his first success of the 1985-86 season.

Mixed fortunes for St James' indoor bowlers ST JAMES Indoor Bowling Club had mixed fortunes during October.

The team entered in the Len Laver Shield lost two of its three games played and St James were defeated by Singing Ship in the last game of the Lindsay Hartwig Shield. This loss was by the small margin of 98-96.

"But we had a big enought lead to retain the shield for this year," games director Norm Gardner said.

Keppel Sands Indoor Bowling Club gained second position in the shield with Singing Ship, third.

St James defeated Park Avenue social club and patroness Dot Bird held a successful triples afternoon. It was the first time Park Avenue has been defeated this year.

The patroness day winning team was Aub Klaproth, Alice Balston and Errol Ward with 30 points followed by Ruth Irons, Mavis Cooper and Theresa Warren in second position with 26 points.

The lowest score team was Arthur and Bonney Atcheson and Olga James. The lucky door winner was Errol Ward with Mavis Brown the raffle winner.

The club has been invited by Keppel Sands and Singing Ship clubs to send two representatives to their Christmas parties.

St James has asked both clubs to attend their party.

Council seeks funds for road to Tartrus weir

YIBC's 5-game day attracts teams TWENTY teams — 10 from Yeppoon Indoor Bowling Club and 10 from the combined Rockhampton clubs — took part in a five-game day at YIBC last Sunday.

Scores at close of play favoured YIBC by one game. The Yeppoonites won 24 games, drew three and scored 519 points.

The combined Rockhampton clubs won 23 games , drew three and finished with 539 points.

Cec Brown won a meat tray and Nancy Jarvie took home a mud crab.

Eleven teams contested the Laver Shield played at the Rockhampton and District Indoor Bowls Association playing centre in Rockhampton.

The-shield was won by Central Star Club.

Gosbee went close to taking out the trophy.

They defeated Singing Ship 15-4, St Stephen's 10-8, but went down by the narrow margin of one point 10-11 to Congregational and by the same small difference to Central Star 6-7.

Tonight (Saturday) is president's night at YIBC. Next Wednesday night YIBC will visit Bauhinia House for social bowls with Senior Citizens' and next Friday night, November 15, Rockhampton clubs, Capri and Wandal, will visit YIBC.

TRIKES TO RACE THE Capricornia Dirt Riders Club now incorporates trikes, bikes, quadracers and odesseys.

The club will present a full day's racing at 'Barlow's Raceway' on Sunday, November 17. The raceway is on the Emu ParkRockhampton Road and will be signposted in both direction.

The bike riders will have a 'Pony Express' that starts at 9.30am. A 'Pony Express' is a four hour endurance ride for two riders who swap over at each lap of about 30 minutes.

The trikes, quadracers and odesseys will race on their track from 10am.

Nominations are $8 plus a $2 sweep, which is not compulsory.

The new amenities block and cooking facilities offers an enjoyable day for everyone.

Camping for riders is encouraged and a party will be held on the night before. Any further information, John Coutts, 39 2403.

LIVINGSTONE Shire Council will apply to the Water Resources Commission for funds toward a road to the Tartrus Weir.

At council's October meeting, chairman Cr Lindsay Hartwig, MLA, said Banana Shire had got "$18 million odd" for infrastructure for the Stanwell power station.

"We should demand infrastructure too," Cr Hartwig said.

"This shire had a road to a major weir (Tartrus Weir) worth four to five million, and big trucks are knocking hell out of it.

"I don't think we should take this sitting down," Cr Hartwig said.

Shire engineer Tony Rowe said the council was getting money for maintenance and damage done to the road.

Cr Ron Landsberg supported Cr Hartwig and said any free money should be "grabbed with both hands".

"This is urgent.If we don't scream, we're going to be left with it (the road) for maintenance," Cr Landsberg said.

"The money is there for Livingstone — it's only a matter of applying to the Water Resources Commission for it."

Cr Kevin Hinz supported the two earlier speakers, but said the Main Roads Department 'should know within a week of any further work on the road.

"They have a temporary works depot near the road that will be closed in about a week," Cr Hinz said.

"But we should insist on the same standard all along the road."

Cr Jim Anderson then moved that council write to the Water Resources Commission indicating that the road giving access between the weir and the highway should be constructed to a uniform standard.

Also, that council make application for an allocation of funds to facilitate construction through that part of concil's road connecting with Meldrum's land, and a copy of the letter be sent to the MRD and the Co-ordinatorGeneral's Department.

Cr Barbara Wildin suggested that because council only had a week, the move should be conveyed by phone.

Cr Geoff Cue agreed, and said the phone call should be made "today".

Cr Anderson said weirs usually ended up as public recreation reserves anyway, with picnic grounds which tourists visited.

Council voted for the motion.

Championships bowls proposal EMU PARK Ladies Bowling Club will play championship as well as club competitions this year.

This was decided at the fifth annual generl meeting on Monday.

Membership fees and nomination fees for competitions are the same as 1984-85.

The retiring committee was thanked for its efforts in running the club over the past year.

Cricketers will play for one day THE FIRST day's play against Commonwealth by Capricorn Coast Cricket on Sunday was cancelled because of the wet weather.

This game has been shortened to a one day game and will be played on the number three wicket at the Rockhampton Cricket Ground.

The Capricorn Coast Cricket Club will hold a general meeting at the Railway Hotel on Thursday, November 14, 7.30pm. Club members and any interested people are welcome to attend.

A social function will be held on Saturday, November 16. Details of this function will be finalised at the general meeting.

Junior cricket JUNIOR cricket games were called off last weekend because of the wet weather.

The games have been re-scheduled for a later date.

Games this weekend will be disrupted by the Pineapple Festival and only those games scheduled for Saturday, today, will be played.

The re-scheduled games will be advised as soon as all details have been finalised by the committee.

This re-scheduling will put the final series off for one week. The committee hopes that plans already initiated by players and officials will not be upset.

A MELBOURNE CUP story to kick off Yeppoon Aussie Rules Club president Bill Thomson was attending one of those "pre-Cup fundraising functions" on Monday night and, lo and behold, his name popped out a hat together with a name from another hat. The other name was What a Nuisance, and, for some reason, it brought a ripple of belly laughs from the crowd. Somehow or other, by means I don't understand, Bill had the option of keeping this horse or letting it go ... he chose to pass it in and it eventually went to someone else, agin by means I don't fully understand. Anyway on Tuesday morning, Bill felt rather tickled at his wise choice, especially after reading that What a Nuisance sort of had no chance of winning the Cup. A few hours later the horse was worth perhaps a bit over $1500 to someone in Yeppoon. On Wednesday afternoon, Bill was saying he stuck by his decision (what else could he do) ... "it would have looked bad if the president had won the money," he said. Sure Bill ... and all that money would have been "just a nuisance" to dispose of!!!

Coast gymnasts win trophies and medals from Rockhampton teams FIFTEEN of 21 competing from the Capricorn Coast Girls' Gymnastic Academy won medals and trophies in a competition against two Rockhampton teams.

Coach Lauren Ravell said the Coast girls went very well on levels one to three, although the Rockhampton teams had competitors on other levels.

In the under seven years section, the Coast academy took all places, with Zoe Dux first, Rebecca Semple second and Morwenna Kirwan third.

Also in the under seven section, Rebecca Semple and Zoe Dux were first on the Floor, with Morwenna Kirwan second; Zoe Dux was first and Alison Gilmore was second on the bar; and Rebecca Semple was first on the

beam with Bridget Kirwan third.

Helen Cook was second overall in the beginners' section, winning the floor and beam exercises.

Janette Luck was third overall in level one, when she was second in the floor and beam.

Belinda Hall was third in the floor section for level one.

Theresa Kirwan was first overall in level two, and was first on the bar, with Jackie Bean second and Alison Thomas third.

Vicki Kitchen was second on the beam and on the floor, with Jackie Bean third.

In level three,Julie Thomas was first, winning the floor and beam sections. Alison Thomas was third overall and was also second on the beam.

Rosemary Gilmore was first on the bar.

YIBC playing for memorial shield EARLY in 1976 Beryl Beattie of the Frenchville Ladies' Indoor Bowls Club and Vi Robson, games director of the Yeppoon Indoor Bowling Club, had a series of talks (mostly on the telephone) with the result that on July 26 of that year the first visit to YIBC by a party of Frenchville women took place and a pleasant session of social bowls was held.

The following year Frenchville and YIBC combined to visit Great Keppel Island. But indoor bowls being the main interest of both clubs, a return to the mats was made in 1978.

Visits by Frenchville to YIBC later coincided with Patron's Day, held in November, and following the death of YIBC's first president, Hugh Buchholz, the visits continued in November and developed into a bowls-Christmas Party-social day.

Beryl Beattie became president of Frenchville Club on February 10, 1981 and

held the position until her death on April 20, 1983.

The Frenchville club held Beryl in so much esteem that they have asked YIBC to sponsor an annual fixture called the "Beryl Beattie Memorial Shield". Frenchville will provide a shield and also a medallion for each member of the winning team.

YIBC is honoured to stage this fixture and the first game of the "Beryl Beattie Memorial Shield" will be held at the Yeppoon Indoor Bowling Club's playing centre in the Yeppoon Showgrounds on Wednesday, November 20.

The day will incorporate a morning of bowls, a Christmas party and a social afternoon. YIBC member Rene Dalglish will provide a Christmas cake, YIBC members will bring cakes and Frenchville will supply sandwiches while music for the social will be in the capable hands of Bill and Irene Jones.

SOME weeks ago there was an item in this column about a trawler which appeared to have either a colour-blind builder or was going to spend some time in reverse (my spy in the fishing industry said the Port and Starboard lights were around the wrong way). Well, this week, "Old Baldy" copped a blast from Mal Vanderheiden who said my spy was probably wrong. He said people not involved in the fishing industry probably wouldn't realise the significance of ti many lights, their colour and positions, otr" a trawler. It seems he's building one at the moment and, to initiate the uninitiated, he gave a quick run-down on them. At the top of the mast there's a white light which is visible through 360 degrees. That's on when the boat's at anchor. Next down the mast is a white steaming light visible through about 160 degrees from the front.

Below that, and apparently side by side, is a red light and a green light (both visible through 360 degrees). Below them is a white light (visible through 360 degrees) then, finally, below that and it seems, on the top of the wheelhouse, are the Port and Starboard lights. They can be together but visible only from one side.

There's also a white light at the back a the boat. Now, when a trawler is engaged in a variety of duties it exhibits these lights in different patterns to show what they are doing. Mal said there were positions for line fishing and different positions for trawling, and so on. I hope my spy has taken all this in ... the rest of you, well, you're just along for the ride!!! ❑

THINGS you notice department ... brownish sort of cattle dog bouncing by as utility passes. Took a look in the rearvision mirror to see why ... dog was riding shotgun on top of divan in back of ute; and he was standing on top of the innersprir mattress! ❑

ANOTHER Cup item ... noted racehorse fancier Lindsay Hartwig, who also has interests in State Parliament and Livingstone Shire Council, was seen "chatting" to men dressed in blue at the intersection of the Yeppoon-toRockhampton Road and Barmaryee Road, around lunchtime Tuesday. The men in blue were from the Main Roads Department and, apparently, were taking an interest in a horse float he was standing near. Later in the day at Tyrer Park, after his horse Lord Callide had run second, Lindsay was asked what he had been doing chatting with the men in blue ...,his answer would take away from the generally light-hearted mood of this column.
