Volunteers will start pool work in August WORK on the Don Ireland Swimming Complex project at Emu Park will start in August and the project will be completed using mostly volunteer labour. This was announced in a planning report prepared by consulting civil and struc.tural eningeers Blain Bremner and Williams Pty Ltd. The report was issued last week. Works to start in August include surveying, pegging and fencing the Bell Park site set aside by Livingstone Shire Council. The consulting engineers' report estimates total cost of the project at $190,000. A breakdown of the costs in the report shows: establishment $8000; materials supply $50,000; filtration plant $25,000; sewage treatment $6000; backwash water control $15,000; water supply $1000; consumer main (CEB) $1000; equipment hire (including operators) $20,000; sundries (administration, audit, insurance) $3000 and engineering, architectural and survey fees $30,000. Whatever else is needed will come from volunteer labour. J E L Neville, who prepared the report, said "the Don Ireland complex project has attracted considerable interest because it appeals to such a large proportion of full-time division one residents as well as people with holiday homes. "Because of the number of people interested, the committee is confident, and indeed it has assurances, that it can recruit professional, trade and other skills to provide the labour necessary to construct the whole of the complex and meet standards required by various statutory authorities," Mr Neville said. Specialist assistance would be obtained for the earthmoving and construction and commissioning of the filtration plant. The cost of $159,000 remained after labour costs were removed. THE committee has $40,000 ready for the pool and Livingstone Shire Council is applying for a loan of $40,000 to assist the project. The report says the balance will be raised by the committee's usual fund-raising activities. Once the loan is received the committee said. it could make a start in the belief that local interest would increase once work was underway. For its $159,000, the committee will construct a half-Olympic pool 25 metres longs, 13 metres wide with depth between 950mm and 1900mm. There will be six swimming lanes. A wading pool will be added at a later date. The pool wilihave a reinforced concrete base with walls of steel reinforced concrete masonry and tiled surfacing. Associated structures proposed are: entrance, office and kiosk; male and female D

Yeppoon men open another readymix plant A DISCUSSION over a drink at the Pacific Hotel recently led to the opening of a second readymix concrete plant in Yeppoon this week. Barry Wetzler of CQ Blocks has opened the readymix plant in association with Ross Biggins of the Fibreglass Tank Co. The readymix plant will operate from McBean Street, where both the block and fibreglass tank businesses operate. Mr Wtzler said the idea came up one day over a beer at the hotel when Mr Biggins was talking about his experience with readymix plants. "A redymix plant idea grew from the discussion," Mr Wetzler said. "It's a natural progression from making conrete blocks. "We have everything needed on site and people expect concrete blocks and a readymix plant to be associated businesses." Mr Biggins is no stranger to readymix concrete ... he operated plants at Emerald and Blackwater and opened one some years ago in Yeppoon. He sold his Yeppoon plant to Sellars, who have sinced closed in Yeppoon. Mr Wetzler and Mr Biggins said the new readymix plant'would provide work for three additional people in addition to the three permanents and five or six casuals now working for CQ Blocks. A batching plant has been installed, trucks and a loader acquired and the new venture is off and running. They said there was room on the Coast for a second concrete plant because the trend in building today was more and more toward blocks instead of timber or to complement timber such as block bases on new homes. They expect enough work to be available now to make the plant viable and can see further growth in the future. •

Past and present pupils can march in procession... Celebrations to cover a week... YEPPOON State School is looking for past and present pupils to march in the centenary procession starting at 10am on Saturday, May 4. Centenary committee president Jim Burton said he was looking forward to seeing nearly all present pupils in the procession. front of the students. After that, a sponge cake, donated by.4RO and the school will be cut by student representatives. The cake will be big enough for all students to have a piece. At 1.30pm, grades one, two and three will put on a concert of dancing and singing. During the day a modern classroom and a classroom of yesteryear will be set up. The modern classroom will have a video showing the school and its history.

Saturday, May 4, 1885, was the day and date on which Yeppoon State School was opened as a provisional school ... where the parents provided the building and the Education Department supplied the teacher. This makes Saturday the focal point of the week, with the procession through Yeppoon Streets, a school fete and a centenary ball at night. Tucker Street will be closed at 10am for• the procession and the fate, so people wishing to go to the school can go up Caroline Street and park in the school grounds. The school fete starts at 1 lam.
