Chairman sees 'tremendous three years ahead' for Livingstone Shire
❑ SATURDAY afternoon in front of the Shire Administration Centre and Member for Callide Lindsay Hartwig relaxed with a can of lemonade ... while all around him people were casting notes that later that night put him in charge of the shire for three years.
MARAUDING DOGS KILL PET SHEEP
MARAUDING dogs killed a pet sheep at Yeppoon High School on Tuesday night last week when they got into sheep and goat pens. School farm fieldhand Bill Edwards said dogs had got into the pen where two sheep and two goats were kept overnight. One sheep was killed and the other animals were mauled around their neck and legs. Mr Edwards said he found the animals late on Wednesday morning "The students who look after the animals

were quite upset. The animals were good for the students because they could be handled easily, and now, because of the scare they got, they will have to be re-conditioned to humans again. "The students were going to exhibit the goats in the Yeppoon Show in June but now they can't because of their wounds." Mr Edwards said the sheep killed by dogs had a market value of $50 but was worth much more because of what it meant to students and because of the way it could be handled for teaching purposes.

"We think the dogs must have been dropped in the pen by people because the only other way they could have got in was through a small hole in the wire around the pen," Mr Edwards said. "I sat on guard on Wednesday night and saw three dogs that were probably among the attackers on Tuesday night." He said there was a security guard patrolling the school grounds every night now, and anybody found at the school after dark, without sufficient reason, would be prosecuted.

LIVINGSTONE Shire Chairman-elect Lindsay Hartwig MLA said on Tuesday he saw "a tremendous three years ahead". "I don't know of any other place that could burst at the seams, such as this area could, given the right services," he said. Mr Hartwig was in an expansive mood. Obviously elated with his massive electoral success (Hartwig 4153 votes, John Bowen 1369 and Roy Wall 1128), he was looking forward to the next three years as chairman. He had to leave for Brisbane in 30 minutes to take part in a vote in State Parliament but he was thinking about the shire. He had spent a lot of time on Sunday and Monday taking congratulatory calls ... and sending out messages from Livingstone. One telegram had been sent to new Brisbane Lord Mayor Ald Sallyanne Atkinson congratulating her and her Liberal team on winning Brisbane City Council. But his thoughts kept returning to Livingstone. He phoned shire clerk Bill Cass, asked when the poll was likely to be declared (Wednesday, April 10), and fixed a tentative date for the statutory first meeting (Monday, April 15). He had spent about an hour at the Administration Centre on Monday afternoon and had made arrangements to have individual talks with senior staff and possibly a group talk with all staff, after Easter. "I want to talk with the officers and find out if they have any problems," he said. "And I want to explain to them that when people come to the office seeking help and advice I want the officers to look at why that particular project should go ahead and sort out how we can help them. "I expect developers to be told where they have gone wrong with their plans so that we can help them correct any mistakes and get things moving. "I don't want undue delays ... speed is of the essence," Mr Hartwig said. Looking ahead to the "tremendous thri years" that were coming, he said the Coat's had "one of the greatest tourist developments in the world right on our doorstep". He wanted to see how things were going with this development (the Capricorn Iwasaki Resort) and see what was needed. "This place has unlimited potential, it really has," he said. On development generally, Mr Hartwig said the shire had to encourage it to spread the rate base. "That's why rates are lower in capital cities ... there's more people paying for everything." Mr Hartwig left for Brisbane on the Tuesday afternoon plane and was booked to return on Thursday afternoon. He was scheduled to be the guest speaker at Yeppoon Rotary Club on Thursday night and will be opening Ridgelands Rodeo on Sunday. El FULL VOTING DETAILS — PAGE 2
