It's 'Russian Roulette' at Causeway for children... HUNDREDS of children and adults were being forced to play Russian Roulette with traffic at The Causeway because Livingstone Shire Council had not erected a pedestrian walkway, it was claimed this week. Causeway Progress Association chairman Bruce McLean said the council had again displayed its lack of understanding and lack of concern for the re-al problem at the "accidentprone" Causeway Bridge. As a result, children and adults during each Christmas/New Year holiday season and at other holiday times, had to play Russian Roulette with their lives by dodging in and out of heavy passing traffic. Mr McLean described the bridge as the major danger spot on the Capricorn Coast. "This situation has now gone on for five years and there is still no action," he said this week in a press release. "The councillors talk about only one problem — fishermen — and make excuses. The councillors claim there is no money, but read last year's paper and you will see they said the same thing then. "But do they worry about the two children already killed who may have been alive today if a safety walkway had existed?" Mr McLean said the current council budget included $91,000 of ratepayers' money to upgrade three roads (Browns Lane $11,000; Woodbury Road $60,000 and Bungundarra Road $20,000) so that Capricorn Iwasaki developer Yohachiro Iwasaki could cart gravel to his resort. "But why can't the council spend a paltry few thousand, by comparison, on a simple construction to provide some safety for hundreds of visitors?" Mr McLean said. "They talk each year but, in good old Aussie terms, are they fair dinkum?" Mr McLean said the children at risk could do nothing about the walkway but their )arents, with their votes in the coming local government elections, could. "After five years it is just not good enough. It is about time we put people into office who will choose the right priorities," he said. Mr McLean said he realised the whole Causeway would need upgrading in the future, when money was available, but the 0 CONTINUED ON PA GE 2

Causeway upgrading now filed for '85 council budget UPGRADING the Causeway Lake Bridge will definitely be considered when next year's Livingstone Shire Council budget is being framed. This was decided at last week's council meeting during debate on a report of a meeting between council and the Main Roads Department on December 12. At that meeting, council was told there was no hope for any improvement to the

existing bridge. The MRD also said there would certainly be no assistance with the erection of a proposed walkway. Cr Maurie Webb asked whether this council could have the bridge included in next year's budget even though there was an election between now and the framing of the 1985/86 budget. When assured this was possible he
moved that the matter be put down now for consideration in the next budget. The report on the meeting with the MRD said there were no objections to council erecting an advisory 40k/ph sign at the bridge. Cr Barbara Wildin successfully moved that the signs be erected. Causeway Progress Association Barry Quigley said this week he was pleased that
the signs had already been erected. He urged all motorists to heed these signs and drive slowly. "No-one wants to see another child killed at this dangerous location over the holidays," he said. FOOTNOTE: In an article on December 14, the Capricorn Coast Mirror said Mr Bruce McLean was association secretary. He is the chairman.
