Welcome to 7 visitors WELCOME to the six Central Queensland Travel consultants visiting this weekend as guests of the Capricorn Coast Tourist Organisation. Welcome also to the Japanese Consular-General visiting on Tuesday who will be meeting Livingstone Shire Councillors, chamber of commerce members and Iwasaki Tourist Resort representatives.

New chamber of commerce for study EMU PARK business people will be invited to attend "two or three" Yeppoon Chamber of Commerce meetings in the New Year. This was decided at the chamber's meeting on Tuesday night when a letter from Emu Park Progress and Ratepayers' Association sought information about forming a chamber at Emu Park. Members decided to invite a delegation to Yeppoon meetings so that the Emu Park contingent could decide whether to start their own chamber or join the Yeppoon members. Secretary Connie Noyes said Yeppoon's constitution defined the area it would cover and this extended to Keppel Sands. Bob Leicht suggested the association be sent a copy of the constitution and a suggestion that a survey be carried out to see how many Emu Park businesses would join. John Peach said the letter presented the opportunity for Yeppoon Chamber of Commerce to change its name to the Capricorn Coast Chamber of Commerce and Industry. "We have to start attracting industry. If we were a chamber of commerce and industry we would have more clout," he said. The meeting then decided to arrange for a survey of all Coast businesses to see who was in business and what each business was doing.

NEW chairman of the National Party's Capricorn Coast branch Alan Stevenson said this week the branch executive was considering operating as "de facto Members for Callide". He said the party had nothing against sitting independent Member Lindsay Hartwig but Callide, until recently, had always been a National Party seat. "The party won the seat when it was first formed in 1949 and, until Mr Hartwig had his National Party endorsement withdrawn, was always our territory," Mr Stevenson said. "As a result, the party's 13 branches that serve Callide have been geared up for years towards serving the people. "We don't want this superb organisation to crumble. It seems logical to us that many National Party supporters would be used to dealing with their local branch when they want something done at State and Federal Government level. "We know our way around the corridors of power. There are people in high places that can smooth out problems if only the problem is brought to their attention. "These are the people the Callide National Party branches have been dealing with for years ... we don't want to lose touch with them." Mr Stevenson said it wasn't as if he was trying to usurp Mr Hartwig's position. "I respect Parliament too much to do that," he said. "But a lot of people want to deal directly with the party ... just as a lot of Australian Labor Party supporters would prefer to deal with people from within their own organisation. "Mr Hartwig won the election as an independent. He had a lot of backers and they did a marvellous job for him ... but they can't devote the next three years to backing him. The National Party branches know this and the members want the representation they are accustomed to to continue. Mr Stevenson paid tribute to the work done by National Party Capricorn Coast branch chairman for 10 years, Cr Maurie Webb, who was elected senior vice-president at the annual meeting on Friday. Cr Mario Cresta was elected secretary and Garth Brownsdon treasurer. Mr Stevenson said that as new chairman he would work toward forming a new branch at Emu Park and a Young National Party to cover the Coast.

0 ANNE EDWARDS likes the water ... particularly the water in the Causeway Lake. She likes to swim, sail, row, paddle and pedal her way around the lake. But when she feels lazy, when she just wants to take it easy, she picks up an Aqua Jet and putt-putts around. It does the work and tows her wherever she wants to go.
