Tan by Road petition on fly plague TANBY Road and McBean Street business people have signed a petition complaining about 'a fly plague. Yeppoon Panel and Paint proprietor, Greg Simpson organised the petition on Tuesday afternoon when he realised that the month-long fly problem was not going to fly away. His office girl, Helen O'Rourke, volunteered to approach each of the businesses seeking their support to have Livingstone Shire Council take some action. The petition, with about 50 signatures, was delivered to acting Shire Clerk Key Lloyd on Wednesday morning. It calls on the council to take immediate action to stop the fly plague. "At the moment the flies are outweighing the smell from the sewerage treatment works," Mr Simpson said. "In the past month, the flies have got really bad. The guys here don't want to eat their lunch." Mr Simpson thought at first that the flies were only at his premises. He moved everything out and hosed the complex,, but it made no difference. Sue McLaughlin of Yeppoon Small Motor Service in Tanby Road said her husband Graham sprayed the premises each morning when he opens and collects "stacks of dead flies". "You can't eat your lunch without having them crawl over your face and hands. We are buying flyspray in bulk and that's not funny," she said. Vince Welsh of Cooee Bay Marine in McBean Street said: "The flies are into everything, food, eyes, nose, coffee ... and ' the boys are complaining bitterly." "A girl was riding her bicycle past our business yesterday and her back was covered with flies," said Mr Welsh.
Gary Palmer, proprietor of Yeppoon Exhausts in Tanby Road said he thought the flies were coming from the dump because of the direction of the wind. "In Victoria, the councils spray the dumps if they happen to be near populated areas," Mr Palmer said. "Customers give the great Australian salute when we are serving them. But it is worse when you are working with both hands and flies climb all over your legs, arms and face," he said. He said the flies seemed to be a small household variety that "sticks like a bush fly >7. Cr Mario Cresta was approached by ratepayers_ in the McBean Street, Tanby Road area on Tuesday. They complained about the smell from the sewerage treatment works and the flies.. He inspected the area with Cr Barbara Wildin and Cr Nev Welfare on Wednesday. "It is a serious situation and Mr Harmsworth, the health surveyor, is preparing a report for the general meeting on November 16," Cr Cresta said.
