MESSAGES FROM WATER In China, there is a saying that if we scold a tree for seven days, it will die. But if we use kind words with it, it will grow beautifully. This saying is in line with Dorothy Retallack’s experiment recorded in her book The Sound of Music and Plants. The experiment divided plants into two groups, one getting to listen soft and sweet music and the other to rock music. After five days, the first group of plants grew better and toward the speakers while the second group grew abnormally and away from the speakers. This experiment is important evidence supporting the belief that sound and words can send positive or negative energy to the plants. This has led to an even more exciting discovery by a Japanese researcher that “Water has its own life.”

MAGICAL LIFE OF WATER

Dr. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese writer, researcher, and businessman, conducted a research to study if words have power over the environment and the human body. Water is the subject of the experiment as 70% of the human body is made of it. The thinking was any result occurring to the experimented water should be similar to the water in the human body.

First, Dr. Emoto collected water from different sources and environmental conditions and used a microscope with high magnification to take pictures of water during its crystallization process.

He found that water from different sources crystallized differently, with water from a natural source forming more beautiful crystals than water collected from a location near an industrial factory.

Meanwhile, polluted water did not crystallize at all.

The researcher concluded that water is a wonder that can’t be overlooked in our lives. Water is like a large source of information that tells a precise story on its surrounding conditions and accurately conveys the emotions and feelings from one person to another or to groups of people.

The magical life of water depends on the power of the human mind. We can choose how water crystallizes, whether the crystals are clear and beautiful or dirty and unattractive. Everything begins with the mind: Whatever the mind says, the water responds in kind.

This experiment shows that water can experience the different codes existing in its surroundings.

The aforementioned experiment has led to his renowned research published in his bestselling book titled Messages from Water in 1999. The research aimed to find out if sound, the surroundings, and human thoughts affect water crystallization. First, by experimenting with playing different kinds of music to water, the research found that beautiful music helped water to crystallize into beautiful shapes whereas heavy metal music prevented water from crystallization. He then compared the crystallization of water from the same source (in this case, the Fujiwara Dam). At first, the water did not crystallize. But after listening to the sound of prayer, it crystallized into a beautiful shape.

Finally, Dr. Emoto puts pieces of paper with different words on water containers. The research found that water labelled with positive messages, such as “Thank you,” “Love and appreciation,” and “Mother Terasa,” crystallized more beautifully than the water labelled with negative or violent words.

THE ULTIMATE INNOVATION THAT LIFTS BOATS BY 24 METERS FROM SCOTLAND

Scotland has more than just scenic view and nature to offer, but quite a few innovations.

One of them is “Falkirk Wheel” which is a rotating boat lift in Scotland, connecting the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. The lift, named after the nearby town of Falkirk in central Scotland, lift a boat from the lower Forth and Clyde Canal to the higher Union Canal.

In the past, the two canals (which now served by the wheel) were previously connected by 11 locks that could lift only 1 boat at a time. The Falkirk Wheel, which can now lift 8 boats at a time and in less than an hour, has not only reconnected the two canals but also made transportation between them much faster and more convenient.

Presided over the opening of the wheel on May 24, 2002 by Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, the wheel with 35-meter in height looks like a double headed celtic axe. To lift the boats up and down, one of the arms (that looks like the head of the axe) would lift up boats to higher Union Canal while the other would lift down boats to lower Forth and Clyde Canal. The rotation consumes only 1.5 kilowatts per hour, which equals to eight home - use kettles – the green engineering that has been the pride of the Scots.

TO GET THERE : Despite its central position in Scotland, Falkirk provides no airport. The easiest way to reach the city is to land in Edinburgh airport. Then catch either a bus or train to Falkirk City. There will be a bus from the city center to the Falkirk Wheel; the fee is £7.95.

A visit to the wheel is free of charge. However, the Falkirk Wheel Experience boat trip is highly recommended. Charged at £12.50 per person, the trip will take you to experience how the wheel works, before cruising along the Union Canal to enjoy the canal-side sight seeing.

The Falkirk Wheel has been listed 1 of the 10 tourist destinations in Scotland, free - of - charge, by Glasgow Caledonian University’s Moffat Centre. Other interesting destinations in Scotland include Riverside Museum (Glasgow) by avant - garde late Zaha Hadid; Urquhart Castle (Drumnadrochit), the heritage castle by Lochness Lake; and The Helix Park (Falkirk), the chic green space famous for horseheads sculpture which is a must-visit for tourists.

As a leader of water management in the eastern region for over two decades, East Water recognizes that “Water is Life” and wants to continue Her Majesty’s wishes by conducting activities to conserve natural resources and the environment in eastern Thailand, especially the water resource, which brings life to all living things, and forming collaboration with various parties.

For example, East Water has worked with the Network of Community Forests Connecting 5 Eastern Provinces to revive and conserve forests outside the protected area along the five provinces in eastern Thailand; built temporary check dams at Bo Thong District in Chonburi Province; and collaborates with the Royal Forest Department to plant more than 60,000 trees in the national forest in Tha Takiap District, Chachoengsao Province, and other areas in the eastern region on the National Tree Day every year.

AS THE WORLD BECOMES CASH-LESS SOCIETY " Sweden has announced to adopt digital currency and to be cash-free in 15 years. " Over 270 million people in China are using the Alipay online payment system to buy products from Taobao and Tmall online markets. Customers can review products, which boosts the use of digital payments. " As 40% of Danish people are using mobile payments, the government has encouraged stores around the country not to accept bills and coins for payment.�

As digital payments are replacing bills and coins, the days of cash are numbered. The main agency pushing the new payment system is the Better Than Cash Alliance, which is based at the UN and is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Citi Foundation, Ford Foundation, MasterCard, Omidyar Network, USAID, and Visa Inc. Established in 2012 and running until of 2017, the Alliance aims to encourage governments and the private sector to adopt digital currency and expand its use worldwide.

Thailand is one country that has adopted the concept of cash - l ess society for country development. On December 22, 2015, the Cabinet approved in principle the National e- Payment Master Plan, which consists of the following projects.

1. Any ID payments: using any ID number or code to identify money receiver for bank - to - bank transactions Objective: to improve the infrastructure of digital payments, making them convenient and safe 2. Electronic cards: promoting the use of electronic cards with a low fee in place of cash to offer people in remote areas better access to financial services; expanding the use of a variety of electronic payment machines depending on the suitability and location of a store to provide more payment options and a channel for submitting tax information to the Revenue Department Objective: to enhance the efficiency of tax collection and combat corruption

The four projects within the National e-Payment Master Plan is being carried out throughout 2016 and is laying a crucial foundation for the introduction of other policies in various areas to bring about change and development in the country. This also helps to improve standard and increase Thailand’s competitiveness in the global market.

3. Systems for tax and e-payment documentation: developing e-tax invoice and e-receipt systems to improve convenience and reduce the documentation and reporting procedures for transactions and tax payments when using an e-payment system Objective: to reduce time that businesses need to spend on paper work and tax payment 4. Government e-Payment Project: promoting e-payments at government agencies based on a central welfare database in conjunction with Any ID payments in order to reduce human errors, redundancy, and corruption based on payments via cash and checks.

Vongthep Arthakaivalvatee, deputy secretary-general of ASEAN for ASEAN SocioCultural Community, called the current situation “ASEAN film renaissance” which a number of films from ASEAN have been selected to screen at the prestigious festival. That has shown that ASEAN has caught up with the international industry.

The cooperation between ASEAN countries has brought such a vibe to the regional industry. Such a vibe could be seen in a joint investment between country members like Thailand, China, and Singapore in “Distance” as well as joint venture in “ASEAN Film Festival of Bangkok” where a number of quality films have been selected for screening.

Representatives from ASEAN countries attending this year festival were from Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Among the screenings, “Ma’Rosa” from the Philippines was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival; “Apprentice” from Singapore in Un Certain Regard; while Santi-Vina (1954) from Thailand was invited to screen at Cannes Classic.

The causes of the problem include Bangkok’s geography that slopes from the east to the Chao Phraya River, high tides, subsidence, and damage to natural drainage.

The Netherlands is one country that’s often affected by floods as 60% of its country is below sea level with the rest 40% being above sea level by only 1 meter. In 1953, the Netherlands had a major flood that killed more than 2,000 people. That crisis prompted the Dutch government to invent a flood prevention innovation called the Delta Works, which makes the Netherlands become known as the country with the best flood prevention system in the process.

The Delta Works features 16 sub - projects consisting of dams, levees, sluices, and dykes. Separating seawater from rivers is the function of the dams, while the sluices only prevent the seawater to flow into rivers intermittently. WHEN DOING HOT WORK, STAY COOL AND CALM

A foreman, a welder, and two maintenance workers worked on Tank 1 without checking for flammable material in accordance with a hot work permit. They used the flammable material detector and ignited fire in the working area, thus causing Tank 1, which connected to another tank containing flammable material and had no proper closure, to explode. The explosion resulted in the death of the foreman and the maintenance workers while the welder had serious injury.

When speaking of hot work, what kind of work are you thinking about? Urgent work?

A job with a tight deadline? An illegal trade? A job with a hotheaded boss? Then, you may ask yourself: If there’s this much heat, how can anyone stay cool and calm?

Before you have too many questions, let us clarify that we’re not talking about hot work in a metaphorical sense, but the actual operation in an environment of high temperature or with sparks, such as cutting, welding, and drilling, all of which pose safety risks. As none of us are superheroes who can stand the heat and fire, let’s learn from case studies and see how to prevent ourselves.

EWG NEWS Working with ONIE to organize computer workshop for disabled students

East Water and the Office of Non-Formal and Informal Education in Chachoengsao are co-organizing a computer workshop for students with disability in the province. The workshop aims to develop basic computer skills and knowledge for personal use and work in the future. East Water has allocated a budget to the recently launched 2016 workshop, which is already in its fourth edition, and expects to train 10 students from 11 districts, totaling 110 students.

Meeting with local communities

Continuing to organize activities with its local community network, East Water in June held cooking workshops to teach the villagers in Pluak Daeng District, Nong Tam Lueng Sub-district in Chonburi province and Bang But Subdistrict in Rayong province, how to make crab hoy jor and Isan sausages. The training aimed to equip the villagers with practical knowledge that can generate income and received great feedback in terms of the number of participants.

Reporting on water situation

East Water has been assigned A+/Stable by TRIS Rating for second consecutive year

East Water held a meeting to report on the 2016 water situation and measures to prevent drought to water users in Chonburi.

The meeting showed the overall amount of water collected at reservoirs in the eastern region and outlined the company’s preventive measures against drought.

TRIS Rating has assigned the rating of “A+” and a “stable” outlook to East Water.

The rating reflects East Water’s strength as the only water management company to have a complete water grid in eastern Thailand covering three provinces, namely Chonburi, Chachoengsao, and Rayong, as well as the company’s continued growth, strong financial status, and good liquidity.

In the next three years, the growth of East Water is expected to be around 3-5%.
