2011 Eastvalley International Night-- Biggest Turn-out Yet!

Page 6

At Eastvalley Elementary “celebrating diversity” is not just a politically correct catch-phrase we throw around—our families come to International Night in throngs ready to have a good time and embrace each other’s cultures! This year’s 10th annual event was no exception, with a record number of volunteers and attendees. It was a great opportunity to find out about almost 20 countries from four continents. About 30 Eastvalley families served as “Cultural Ambassadors.” There were representatives from Algeria to Venezuela and from Puerto Rico to Ukraine, with sizable contingents from both Brazil and India. The scents of French crepes, Indian Samosas, and Lebanese stuffed grape leaves co-mingled with Salvadorian Quezadilla cake and good old American brownies. No one left hungry! Silk kimonos, Indian saris, Slovakian pottery, and Brazilian toys & musical instruments were a feast for the eyes. On the Eastvalley stage drums boomed, skirts swished, and young voices shouted out aiy-ya! Many of our own students and their families took the spotlight that night. Mrs. Cunningham and her partners moved with such grace, wielding those huge Japanese drums. Dr. Bernard organized a select group of 5th grade drummers into a Middle Eastern percussion group, and a group of 1st grade music students performed some Israeli dances. The Tiger Tae Kwon Do performance featured several of our students showing their martial arts skills, including breaking boards! Eight Indian families—some brand new to Eastvalley—joined forces to provide Kolli dancing. All this was complemented by the Wheeler Diversity Dance Team, showcasing several South American dances. We also had 13 community partners involved this year. The food never ran out thanks to six generous local restaurants who donated food for the event. Please show your appreciation to: Brazilian Bakery, Chick Fil-A, Mediterranean Grill, Panda Express, Papa John’s, and Tijuana Joe’s. Also thank you UPS Store and Wheeler High School. Did you get to make an Anansi spider puppet, sword fight with a real black belt guy, or play Homer Simpson chess? If you did, it was thanks to the Center for Puppetry Arts, Kid Chess, and Marietta Martial Arts . If you want to continue to explore the world on your own, check out CultureGrams on the Cobb Virtual Library web site listed under the Social Studies resources. You can get kid-friendly information there about countries from all over the world. There are all sorts of facts & figures as well as pictures, video, interviews, and recipes! Happy exploring!

5th Graders Arrive at Ellis Island The Eastvalley 5th graders are studying American History including immigration during the 1800’s. On January 28th, the 5th grade participated in an ‘Ellis Island’ simulation. When the students arrived at school that morning dressed in 19th century attire, they formed a line outside on the sidewalk and waited in the cold for their turn to be allowed inside to be processed. Each student had to fill out their own passport, register with the officials, go through a health inspection, a legal inspection, and pass the immigration exam. Following this exercise, they celebrated in the cafeteria by trying all sorts of different types of food from various countries. Each student prepared and brought in food from a country that was part of their ancestry. Many thanks to the 5th grade teachers for providing this learning experience for our children.
