Food Fight

In this funny food issue, we embark on a culinary endeavor, putting two of Austin's favorite food groups to the test. Though 'cheesy' and lighthearted, we assure you that we took this task very seriously, sampling countless burgers and tacos to bring you only the best. In this humorous hunt, we found that Eastsiders are quite spoiled when it comes the delectable options that perfectly slide into the buns (or tortillas), depending on your wrap of choice.

With so many eateries competing for taste buds, it's easy to get lost in the sea of social media hype. But fear not, we are not simply chasing the "cool, hip, and Instagrammable" food trends. Our mission is to explore not only the timeless classics that have satisfied palates for generations but also the exciting newcomers destined for lasting greatness. Our picks, dare we say, are ‘cheddar’ than that and will leave you going back next week for more.

Beyond the fun food showdown, the pages of this issue are filled with captivating local stories. We shine a spotlight on Creative Action's commendable efforts to provide children with artistic outlets, fostering connections with the world of art. We also take you on a walk to discover the fascinating tale of Really Small Museum and its journey to becoming a cherished neighborhood landmark.

Of course, we haven't forgotten the best spots to indulge in food and drink while beating the summer heat. Whether it's a must-visit brewery in Southeast Austin, an inviting spot to play some pickleball just north, or a sweet treat from another country perched on the corner of East MLK, we’ve got you covered.

This issue is dedicated to our cherished readers and partners and to everyone seeking the best of East Austin. Your support means the world to us, so please follow our new podcast, check us out on Instagram, and let the world know you're an avid reader of EASTside Magazine

Enjoy the read, and relish the flavors!

Making a Difference

Creative Action’s Artful Agenda

What began as an anti-bullying school project between four University of Texas Drama and Theatre graduate students has evolved into a city-wide resource benefiting children of all ages called Creative Action.

Through enrichment programs, they are positively sweetening students’ lives by employing art as a medium to enrich school performance, boosting self-confidence, and fostering critical thinking.

Established in 1997 as the “Theatre Action Project,” this interactive experience was designed to prevent violence among middle-school-aged students. Over the years, they were granted non-profit status and then expanded to offer after-school and summer programs, eventually rebranding to “Creative Action” to better align with their mission.

Deeply rooted in Austin’s vibrant art scene, Creative Action strives to highlight the benefits of art in a student’s educational and personal journey. As the largest provider of school arts education in Central Texas, they offer a diverse array of programs that cater to students’ preferences and needs. Some of the artistic channels offered are theater arts, filmmaking, digital media, creative writing, and visual arts.

Their after-school programs are available at 30+ elementary and middle schools across the greater

Austin area. While high-quality programs typically require a monthly fee, Creative Action's commitment to accessibility is evident through its generous financial aid and free programs for families who qualify.

Serving as an alternative to traditional childcare, their summer camps offer kids the opportunity to collaborate with industry professionals, nurture curiosity, gain hands-on experience, and make meaningful connections with their peers. The camps typically span over one to two weeks and incorporate relevant themes into the curriculum.

While also recognizing the importance of engaging youth and stimulating their minds, Creative Action’s intensive year-round program allows teens to explore personal identity and social change through their chosen creative outlet. These young artists are compensated for their contribution with a stipend and are recognized for their work while building a

portfolio. Through a mentorship with working professionals, these young adults are provided valuable feedback to prepare them for the workforce.

Creative Action's dedication to promoting the benefits of art in education has brought awareness to the difference it can make in a child’s development. Beyond nurturing the next generation of artists, Creative Action actively supports the local artists by providing employment opportunities. Anyone can get involved; whether volunteering or donating, Creative Action eagerly welcomes volunteers looking to make a positive difference in shaping the minds of future generations.

Small Art for Big Change

Breaking Expectations to Amplify Conversations about the Environment

Change can start with a conversation. But too often those conversations are confined to closed spaces or traditional forums. However, Really Small Museum artist Juliet Whitsett and her partner, Marianne Newsom, are bringing the conversation to the streets of their East Austin neighborhoods.

The 14th Corner Contemporary and The Banton Museum of Art are two miniature museums encapsulated in sleek 12x16x20 inch boxes, mounted in their co-founders’ front lawns. They were created with the help of Juliet’s husband, an architect, and Marianne’s dad, a builder, and each feature a single work from a rotating selection of artists.

Juliet curates works that represent a range of forms and mediums but are unified by a focus on an ecological issue. As an environmental educator and community programmer, these themes are close to her heart—and her art. “The more we talk about these issues, the more we learn and the more they’re on our radar,” she explains. “Artists are really incredible in spreading the word about what’s important…and they do it in really innovative ways.”

When the project originally opened, in the midst of the pandemic in November 2021, it fostered much-craved community interaction. The exhibits drew crowds to

lively outdoor openings, frontyard salons, and hosted walking tours between the two museums. What started as a fun project has evolved into a literal conversation starter for art enthusiasts and passersby alike.

Watching people stop in front of the 14th Corner Contemporary everyday—to chat or just observe— gives Juliet hope that the art-onthe-streets concept is having an impact. “In a lot of ways, it's more accessible; it invites the viewer to think,” she says. “The fact that those pieces are out in the world is a nice break in our everyday expected experience, so maybe it does inspire contemplation.”

This is also the thrust of her work with University of Texas’s Planet Texas 2050 initiative, which aims to help communities prepare for the impact of climate change. Juliet’s series focuses on species resiliency; she creates digital art of species that are threatened or

endangered in Texas. Part of the proceeds go to protecting these species and preserving an ecological balance that is increasingly in peril.

Cultivating awareness and conversations can sow the seeds for real solutions. For Juliet, that is the power of bringing her craft into the community. “I have true belief that most people want to be part of a change, and we're trying to figure out how,” she explains. “I’m an artist, and these are my skills; this is how I can contribute… You’ve got skills, so how can you contribute? Everybody’s got something they can do.”

Meanwhile, We Drink

From Morning Joe to Afternoon Ale

Cultivating community is an art form, much like the creative culinary endeavor of brewing the perfect craft beer. The prime ingredients in creating a neighborhood gathering space of Meanwhile Brewing’s caliber include a spacious and welcoming coffee garden, an aesthetic Pacific Northwest-inspired indoor area, a calendar chock-full of diverse events, and, most importantly, the social lubricant of a really good brew.

After cutting his teeth in the Portland beer scene, Meanwhile’s founder and brewmaster Will Jaquiss landed in Austin to be closer to family. When the opportunity presented itself to take part in Austin’s admittedly smaller (in terms of breweries per capita), yet slightly more expansive, craft beer scene, he jumped on the opportunity.

The concept of Meanwhile was to not only deliver great beer but to

also create a space where people could gather and enjoy one another. Will excitedly took inspiration from Austin’s laid-back, outdoor-centric lifestyle. Explaining his vision, he notes, “There’s a really wonderful coffee garden instead of a beer garden culture here in Austin... So I wanted to go into that and bring a Hill Country coffee garden experience to the space.” Patrons can arrive early in the day for a morning pick-me-up and stay late into the evening, perhaps catching some live

music or even a drag show while enjoying one of Meanwhile’s unique libations.

One thing that immediately stands out in Meanwhile’s rotating lineup of lagers, IPAs, sours (and more) is less than traditional specialty ingredients like earl grey tea. “We are hyper-focused on quality, and we definitely take that seriously. But the ingredients that we like to put in [our beer] can be really fun and kind of whimsical. At the end of the day, drinkability is paramount. If we are using something that's usually found more in a cocktail or culinary setting, it's because we think that it’s going to produce a highly drinkable beer.” This

WHAT’S IN A NAME?

The concept behind the Meanwhile name stems from founder Will’s affinity for science fiction.

“I really like this idea that something is going on right underneath your nose; a whole different world, or parallel universe, is happening simultaneously. I like the idea that there's more than meets the eye.”

ethos of prioritizing fun without sacrificing quality runs through not only the taproom but also in all aspects of the business. It’s seen in everything from the events they host, to their playfully designed merchandise, to the select wines served alongside their house-made beverages.

With their expansive outdoor area, in addition to their indoor seating, production space, and warehouse, the possibilities of Meanwhile Brewing seem endless. The addition of a soccer field, outdoor stage, numerous food trucks, and a playground expands upon the coffee garden concept, turning Meanwhile into an anytime

oasis for kids and adults. Whether it’s date night, a family gathering, or a good time with friends, Meanwhile offers the necessary components for a more than satisfying experience.

BURGERS VS. HIHATPUBLICHOUSE

Whether you’re a die-hard tortilla fanatic or a connoisseur of buns, it’s indisputable that the Austin food scene takes both their tacos and burgers seriously. From traditional recipes to entirely novel concepts, chefs across the city feed the masses with their take on two beloved comfort meals. While we’d never dare to give up one or the other, we’ll certainly highlight some of our favorite handhelds and have a little fun seeing how they stack up. Let the fist fight begin!

TINYBUTMIGHTY

VS.

TheGringo

TheVato

An offshoot of the brick-and-mortar staple that lies just across I-35 on Airport Boulevard, JewBoy Sliders takes JewBoy Burgers back to their East Austin food truck roots with a pared down menu that packs a punch. Situated in front of Violet Crown Social Club, chefs sling smashed and seared sliders late into the night, feeding the rowdy 6th Street crowd. They keep it simple, offering up just two variations on their mini burgers. The Gringo offers exactly what the name suggests: a patty smothered in a slice of American cheese. The cheesy classic is heightened with their house-made aioli (A.K.A. Schmutz Sauce). Those who want a little variation on this American-style cheeseburger can opt for the Vato, served with a Hatch Green Chile ranch spread, grilled jalapeños, and melted pepper jack cheese. This spicy number satisfies heat seekers without allowing the flavor of the patty to disappear into flames.

There’s nothing quite as delightful as strolling up to a food truck and walkingawaywithaquickmealthatmeets, orsurpasses, thequalityof anexpensiveplateatabrick-and-mortarrestaurant.Whiletacotrucks might reign supreme in terms of sheer numbers, burgers also shine in thecompetitiveworldofEastsidefoodtrucks.

JEWBOY @jewboyburgers

In a similar vein to JewBoy, taco truck Discada has also honed in on one menu item done right. The eponymous style of cooking, referred to as cowboy-wok cooking, utilizes an unusual instrument. A mix of beef, pork, and veggies are slow cooked in a tractor plow. Yet, with the speed that taquitos leave the truck window, it’s easy to forget the time

and care put into each mini taco. The filling is marinated for a full day before making its way to the ‘wok,’ where it steadily reaches perfection over the course of six hours. Once it makes its way into its penultimate destination of a soft, warm tortilla, the perfectly moist meat is topped with sweet pineapple and cilantro that adds a brightness to the savory treat.

VS. SIDE CHICKS

Flyrite’s Cowboy Sandwich is sure to please, with spicy breaded chicken, bacon, cheese, and jalapeños packing a massive Southwest-inspired flavor punch.

Granny’s Tacos ‘Rico’ taco offers a combination of tender chicken with a nutty and complex mole sauce, paired with flavorful Mexican rice. It provides an even balance of savory, sweet, and spicy to kick any chicken and mole craving.

TEAM PICKS: BAPTISTE’S FAVE

Alamo Drafthouse's Royale Burger

As a Frenchman, having a burger will always be a guilty pleasure, so why not double the fun and watch a movie alongside this towering assortment of delicious foods? The Alamo Drafthouse’s Royale Burger with cheese never disappoints, unlike the last Star Wars trilogy, and the fries are always nicely warm and perfectly crispy.

Veracruz All Natural’s Grilled Fish Taco combines smoky grilled tilapia with the crunch of cabbage, the sweetness of mango pico, the creaminess of Monterey Jack cheese, avocado, and the bite of chipotle mayo salsa. This well-rounded blend of flavors and texture is just one of many local faves on their menu.

At Terry’s Seafood, a fish sandwich is the main attraction! They offer patrons a choice between flavorful catfish or cod smothered in tangy tartar sauce.

ROUND 2: IT DOESN’T GET ANY CHEDDAR THAN THIS

There’s nothing ‘grater’ than smothering a subpar meal in melted cheese, but true turophiles know that striking the right ratio and matching the flavor profile of the main ingredients are what makes or breaks a cheesy deal.

CHRIS’S FAVES

Can't Believe

It's Vegan Burger

Nom Burgers serves up savory selections of 'vegan junk food,' and their Double OG Cheeseburger tastes as good as it looks, even if you're a carnivore. Two juicy patties and lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions are topped with American cheese and house made 'nom sauce,' all within a tasty brioche bun. Add pickled jalapeños and pair with sweet potato fries for the ultimate treat.

"No-Nonsense" Street Tacos

Oye Taquito offers specialty mini street tacos perfected in the Mexican city of Matamoros, across the border from Brownsville. Six small corn tortillas are packed with well-seasoned beef, garnished with cilantro, onion, fresh avocado, and a generous handful of queso fresco. With salsas, lime wedges, and grilled onions on the side, these mini tacos are authentic, delicious, and reliably filling.

Dai Due represents the flavors of the region by meticulously sourcing ingredients from Central Texas. From the oil in the frying pan to the garnish on the plate, everything the chefs cook up is imbued with the essence of the local land. The hefty Dry-Aged Wagyu Double Cheeseburger contains layers

of Texas-sized flavor. The first-rate texture and flavor inherent to Wagyu are enhanced by Dai Due’s bacon. Both the Wagyu and bacon are ground together, creating a beautiful, intoxicating balance of salty goodness. What makes this cheesy delight soar is the excellent cheddar from Stryk Jersey

VS.

Farm, located in Schulenburg, Texas. Crunchy dill pickles and a sauce especial bring out the best in both the cheese and the meat while adding even more texture to this legend-dairy burger. A side of French fries with beet ketchup adds a delightfully earthy flavor that perfectly completes the meal.

Este's Fish Tacos

The showstopping tortillas that are Suerte’s calling card also make a splash at Este where they are featured as a pairing for fish tacos. The delectable tortillas hug rather large chunks of masa battered swordfish – yes, swordfish – and then those two ingredients are tastefully dressed with habanero-piquín hot sauce and salsa mexicana. Simple, straightforward, delicious – there’s no need for more.

LASANTABARBACHA @lasantabarbacha

Taco Mex's Vegan Taco

There is every reason that a drive down Manor Road should include a pit stop at the Taco Mex window. Whether crispy tacos or breakfast tacos are the objective, it’s hard to go wrong here. The made-to-order tacos maintain all the quality one expects but at the prices we remember from high school. Try a bean, potato, and nopales taco. It may be vegan, but add some green salsa, and this three-(now-4) ingredient masterpiece has all the flavor necessary to start the morning off right.

For those who have ever wondered how to get more queso in their taco without bursting through their tortilla, La Santa Barbacha’s Cheese Taco is cheesy on the eyes and satisfies the savory-tooth. In a move that feels a bit like cheesy inception, the chefs nix the traditional wrap for a cheesy shell that forms the outer layer of this satisfying taco. Inside, gooey cheddar surrounds perfectly seasoned barbacoa and chicharron. The symphony of textures in this taco is sure to have patrons cheesing.

MEHER’S FAVES

Nitxta’s Beet

“Tartare” Tostada

This taco at Nixta makes me feel like I’m eating a meal from a cartoon. It’s vibrant with magenta hues from the roasted beets, lime green fluff from the avocado crema, a dark green bouquet of microgreens, all piled high on a blue corn tortilla. It tastes as exciting as it sounds. And let’s be honest, a tostada is essentially a taco with a tad less packaging.

Arlo’s Frito Pie Burger

Even those averse to vegan meals should be able to appreciate the creativity of this menu item. Marrying tradition with innovation, this plant-based food truck serves a meatless burger topped with vegan cheese, chili, Fritos, chipotle sauce, pico de gallo, onions, and lettuce. It’s messy, packed with flavor, and guilt-free.

ROUND 3: GO NUTS FOR THESE MEATLESS MARVELS

For those who never wonder “Where’s the beef?,” there are numerous opportunities to indulge in plant-based fare that doesn’t compromise on flavor. With many creative minds putting veggies to the test, meatless alternatives are becoming the main attractions, enticing the veggie-curious with satisfying and complex flavor profiles. These dishes not only rival their animal counterparts but also stand on their own as one of many mouthwatering options on meatless menus across the city.

It’s nothing but delicious food and great service at De Nada, the brightly colored cantina that lights up its cozy corner on East Cesar Chavez. Amidst the many delights of their taco menu (fan favorites include their slow-cooked barbacoa and seared fish) is a garden-fresh hidden gem: the Calabacitas taco. A vegetable medley graces the handmade blue corn tortilla, featuring a blend of perfectly seasoned savory squash, corn, and tomatoes. The slight natural sweetness of the fresh veggies are offset by smoked black beans that add a filling, creamy element to this light dish. A chipotle slaw adds just the slightest hint of heat and a satisfying crunch. A generous portion of buttery avocado adds not only great taste but also makes for a pretty flash of green to top off this picturesque taco. De Nada is a gluten free establishment, but they can also easily alter this vegetarian option for vegans by removing the mayo on the slaw.

Sunny’s Backyard, on the other hand, is a fully vegan pub that delights in comfort food, aiming to bring a sophisticated palate to the table while retaining the simply fun element of a delicious burger, fries, and beer combo. Post up with friends at one of the casual picnic tables that dot their spacious lot and order the Black Garlic Burger. A pillowy brioche bun washed in an earthy, slightly sweet black garlic aioli cradles a perfectly charred burger. The texture of crunchy pickles and greens stands in complementing contrast to the yielding bun and the melted Chao cheese.

TEAM PICK'S: ERIC’S FAVE Joe's Bakery's Breakfast Tacos

If I do eat in Austin these days, it’s usually breakfast on a photoshoot day, and I always go to Joe’s Bakery for home-style tortillas and tacos that remind me of my abuelita’s cooking. It’s the real deal and as authentic as is gets.

ROUND 4: GETTIN’ JUICY WITH IT

Get greasy or go home. It’s impossible to think about two formidable competitors without evoking visions of flavorful drippings making their way onto hands, and inevitably, down the wrists of those who choose to get down and dirty. Mess aside, a good juicy burger or taco is indicative of a flavor bomb sure to hit the spot.

After a brief hiatus, beloved taco truck Palo Seco 512, formerly known as La Tunita 512, is back in birria business. This quaint trailer specializes in one heck of a messy, delicious taco known as birria de res. These tacos are traditionally served with a side of consommé for dipping. Hungry patrons roll up their sleeves and dunk the taco, tortilla and all, into the flavorful beef broth for the full experience on the messy side. The bright red, chile-spiced beef is incredibly tender and made all the more succulent when drenched in its signature sauce. Palo Seco devotees line up for this gratifying specialty, and the truck often sells out. Those who are ready to get their hands dirty and their tastebuds singing make it a point to arrive early.

Veracruz's La Reyna

Rightfully called ‘The Queen,’ this taco is jampacked with a sumptuously sautéed veggie blend of mushrooms, spinach, onions, carrots, and red bell peppers, all mixed with scrambled egg whites and topped with freshly sliced avocado. Get it on a freshly prepared corn tortilla and add a little zing with their verde jalapeño salsa.

Gobble Gobble

You’ll gobble up this delicious grass-fed beef burger from the food truck outside of Icenhauer’s on Rainey Street. Freshly-pickled pickles and gooey cheese from Antonelli’s are piled onto a sweet brioche bun. Don’t forget the seasoned potato rounds, a cross between a French fry and a potato chip, served with a creamy, homemade buttermilk dill sauce.

HIHATPUBLICHOUSE @hihataustin VS.

Hi Hat Public House’s Bar Burger is another delightfully drippy treat. The house Tasty Sauce and rich 44 Farms beef are the agents to blame, but all is forgiven after biting into this straightforwardly delectable dish. A brioche bun dressed in house pickles and the obligatory lettuce and tomatoes envelop the thick patty. The laidback atmosphere of this music-centric Eastside watering hole puts patrons at ease, allowing any self-consciousness caused by wayward sauce to dissipate into the background of this toothsome experience.

eastsideatx.com 27 {the tasty side of austin}

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Some traditions and recipes stick around for a reason, continually passed down through the generations not only for the sake of convention but also for their damn good results. Finding the perfect prototypical burger or taco might be for the birds, but these tried-and-true family customs deliver consistently delicious results.

Jacoby’s Restaurant and Mercantile is a rustic ranch-to-table restaurant focusing on elevated American fare, specifically zeroing in on Texas’ regional specialties. It’s only natural, then, that their Texas beef burger is the star of the show. This burger is a whopping half-pounder made from Jacoby Brand beef, sourced from the namesake family’s cattle ranch. Since 1981, the Jacoby philosophy of raising all natural, hormone and antibiotic free cattle has resulted in some of the most flavorful beef in Central Texas. In addition to their excellent ranching conditions, they use a 21-to-28-day dry aging process to bring about a most tender result. The large-and-in-charge patty is dressed up with cheese and the usual accoutrements, but it is the beef itself that does the heavy lifting in this Texas-sized burger.

DEVEN’S FAVES

Salt & Time’s Butcher’s Burger

This burger is not messing around. For a butcher shop, it should go without saying that their burger is beyond a typical patty, but even so, Salt & Time's myriad of flavors tickles the tastebuds. They take steak trimmings and grind them into a burger so rich with flavor it packs a punch. As a pro-pickle-on-burger person, the salty, sour kick with the creamy mayo in between those brioche buns is what dirty dreams during a diet are made of. Coupled with their beef-fat fried fries, is there any competition elsewhere?

El Secreto de la Abuela’s Beef Fajita Tacos

ROUND 5: KEEP IT CLASSY VS.

The only way to find your favorite taco in Austin is to trust someone’s advice, and I’m beyond grateful I did. The Beef Fajita Tacos at El Secreto de la Abuela taste exactly how you’re fantasizing they will. Perfectly charred tortillas with a smoky, savory cut of fajitas lying inside leave you questioning why you waited so long to listen to your friend's advice. Basically, it’s a damn good taco.

Enough about cows. When talking pig, one particular taco style stands out as staple amongst the rest. Since 1985, Rosita’s Al Pastor has been feeding not only bellies but also souls with their traditional al pastor tacos. The homemade flour tortillas lead the charge, their structural integrity and flavor shining a light on the main attraction that is the spit-grilled, red-hued pork. Brought to Mexico by Lebanese immigrants, the al pastor style of cooking involves marinating

thinly sliced meat and placing it on the trompo, a rotating spit, traditionally heated over charcoal. The slightly crispy pork on the outside of the spit is then shaved off in small, tender bits. The resulting taco filling is smoky, tender-yet-crunchy, and tinged with just a subtle touch of heat. Add Rosita’s green salsa, oft rumored to be one of the best in town, for an extra dousing of flavor.

The spirited chants of passionate soccer fans greet guests as they set foot into The Pitch, while the appetizing aroma of freshly made food wafts over and entices the senses. From their mouthwatering food and artfully curated cocktails to their pristine pickleball courts and nearby jogging trails, this open-air entertainment venue guarantees a memorable experience for visitors no matter the age.

Just north of central Austin lies the latest addition to Parmer Pond District. The Pitch is a place where foodies and sports fans unite to indulge in a diverse array of entertainment options.

Originally designed to be an amenity center for nearby corporate offices, this soccer-themed entertainment space underwent transformative changes when the pandemic reshaped work-life culture. With remote work becoming the norm and foot traffic dwindling, the concept for a traditional amenity center lost its appeal. However, visionaries Karlin Real Estate and Two Oak Ventures saw the opportunity to reimagine the space with Austin’s soccer culture in mind.

Since its opening in February 2022, this entertainment center has become a hub for soccer fans across Austin. At the heart of The Pitch lies Parmer Field, a lush artificial turf stadium that serves as the home venue for Austin FC II. The

But it’s not just the thrill of soccer that draws visitors. The Pitch is also renowned for its exceptional happy hour and an enticing array of delectable food options. Stocked with four restaurants that serve a diverse range of culinary delights including Ga Roti’s Vietnamese fire-spun chicken, Dos Tacos’ breakfast tacos, Smoke Show’s pork carnitas, and Ranger Burger’s Wagyu beef burgers, there’s something to satisfy every craving imaginable. The cherry on top is the dedicated beer garden: Corner Kick Bar, offering a carefully curated selection of brews to complement visitors’ culinary adventure.

One of the most memorable aspects of The Pitch is its animated atmosphere during major soccer events like the World Cup. The outdoor space becomes the go-to spot for passionate soccer fans who gather to enjoy watch parties and revel in the exhilarating energy. General Manager Jeff Musil recalls the highly-anticipated Mexico verses Argentina game, where over 1,300 spectators filled the space.

For those interested in pickleball, three pristine courts always seem to be buzzing with activity. Their courts are open to the public and can be reserved online for about $20 an hour. Anyone looking to dip their toes in the rising popularity of the sport can gather friends for a drink, while indulging in a little friendly competition.

With its diverse entertainment offerings, engaging community events, and a commitment to high-quality cuisine, The Pitch keeps guests coming back for more. Whether you’re a soccer fanatic, an amateur pickleball player, or someone just looking for a place to enjoy happy hour, make your way to The Pitch and prepare to be drawn into an atmosphere that truly sets it apart. The Green House

A talented duo makes the most of their urban footprint by designing and developing four properties on two lots. After completing a thoughtful design, the Austin couple moves into their carefully curated home with a bold curb appeal to the tone of a micro-community on bustling East 12th Street.

Since opening the doors of his architecture practice nearly ten years ago, Davey McEathron has designed an impressive collection of thoughtful and striking homes throughout Austin. When afforded the opportunity to purchase two generous lots in Austin’s Chestnut neighborhood, he enlisted the help of his wife, Rebecca Holliday, to develop the properties themselves. “Rebecca quit her day job and took on the role of general contractor for all four homes,” Davey says with a grin, “and she’s the best builder I’ve ever had. The attention to detail is everywhere.”

Two modestly scaled accessory dwelling units open privately to a shared alley, while two primary residences face separate streets at opposite corners of their lots. With beautiful detailing and masterful daylighting, three of the homes quickly found buyers. The couple authored the fourth home, affectionately dubbed by friends, ‘The Green House on 12th,’ for themselves.

Comfortable rooms with an abundance of deep, neighborhood views are well-organized within three floors. A well-proportioned living space and open kitchen sit below two levels of bedrooms and bathrooms, which are united by a stairwell bathed in daylight from windows above. Despite its adjacency to energetic 12th Street, the stairwell works as an extra acoustic buffer, making the spaces inside calm and serene.

That serenity is not solely achieved by the home’s smart organization but also the personalized care evident in the selection of materials and finishes throughout the home. Being inside feels intangibly elevated, and yet there’s an appreciation for the very tangible choices that were made in the pursuit of its palette.

Complementary shades of elegant, green combed wood wrap continuously from outside to within, set off by grain matched walnut cabinetry and accented with rich, brass fixtures. A soft grey, polished

concrete slab glimmers subtly underfoot, accents of custom selected pink and green aggregate catch the indirect light and play off the white walls.

As the centerpiece of the house, a sprawling infinity white quartzite island receives special attention from the couple. “I’m really particular about my stones, and I can obsess,” Rebecca admits, “so we hand select every piece of stone in every house. It needs to be warm, inviting, and durable, and quartzite is the hardest stone you can get. It looks like marble, and you don’t have to seal it.”

Other custom details include hand-made leather door pulls, be-

spoke handrails, a concealed, counterweighted door, and exactingly aligned tile work in the home’s kitchen and three bathrooms.

“The arced corners in the master bathroom are my favorite detail,” recalls Davey. “We had the tub on site while the walls were being framed so we could make sure the radius of the walls matched the radius of the tub.”

The home, or rather the collection of homes united under the couple’s vision, feels decidedly distinct from standard developer-driven efforts common throughout East Austin. After setting out to create a space for themselves, Davey and Rebecca have clearly crafted something more.

In November 2022, the eatery reopened on East Cesar Chavez, returning a staple and satisfying the cravings of Austinites.

“We wanted to keep it as true to the original as possible and still capture that cozy neighborhood vibe,” shares Rania Zayyat, Bufalina’s Managing Partner and Wine Director.

Like every good staple, the space is simple, allowing the quality of the food and service to take center stage. Rania speaks to the space’s authenticity: “We would rather have a no-frills vibe and put our money into the food, wine, and service.”

Founder Steven Dilly opened the establishment with no culinary background, just a passion for Italian food as a self-proclaimed “pizza nerd.” Coming up with the concept, he knew he wanted a compact menu that emphasized Neapolitan pizzas, while also offering pasta and small bites.

Characterized by a thin, crisp crust and a middle that’s slightly dampened by tomato sauce, Bufalina’s Neapolitan pizzas require a labor-intensive process to perfect the layer of flavors. Ingredients are crafted in-house, including fermented dough, tomato sauce, and fresh mozzarella. The pies are baked for just over a minute in their chic white-tiled wood-fired oven that’s set to 1000 degrees.

“Bufalina offers traditional dishes, but we do it with some Austin flair,” Rania shares. Head Chef Brooks Wilson subtly experiments with different flavors. Menu items

are always changing and rotating as the establishment strives for seasonality, sourcing locally, and allowing the chefs the freedom to try new things.

The minimalistic space and diverse flavor profiles are complimented by their notably large and worldly wine menu. Curated by Rania herself, a seasoned expert in the industry, the diverse program emphasizes natural wines that prioritize flavor as well as economic and social awareness. In addition to a notable wine menu, Rania heads up Bufalina Wine Club where members can receive new bottles every month to gain exposure to their partnerships with socially-conscious makers.

It’s no secret now that Bufalina has brought delight to the community through their quality and creative pies paired with exceptional wine. “We get to see people when they're at the best part of their day,” Rania delights. “There's something really special about being able to put a smile on people's face with good food and wine.”

A Taste of New Zealand

A Fruity Soft Serve Transforms into a Decadent Dessert

Sitting comfortably on the corner of MLK Boulevard and Harvey Street, Zed’s Ice Cream tempts passersby to approach and try the advertised ice cream mentioned on their neon sign. A New Zealand method of making fruity soft serve delights all who venture in to try this island delight.

Their specialty, the honey crunch, is a frosty bite of banana mixed with notes of vanilla, honey, and buñuelo bits blended into a symphony of sweetness that distracts from the blistering summer heat. The banana flavor is not simply a syrup sprinkled in or manufactured but is perfectly blended through a unique New Zealand machine that led to the island nation's distinct soft serve. The mushy texture of the banana is absolutely absent in each bite. Only a gentle note of the flavor comes through and balances the sweetness of the honey. The crisp bundle pieces offer a delightful taste to counter the silky smooth texture of the ice cream.

Originally founded in Portland as a trailer, owners Caleb Schmidt and Matt Porter moved to Austin and opened their first brick-and-mortar. After opening, Zed’s took off and their families quickly established roots here. Through a chain of events, Caleb and Matt sold their small business to Mack Brown. Though Mack has no formal ice cream experience, he knows business and had the vision, so this opportunity to take over Zed’s was kismet.

Co-helming Zed’s with Mack is Trevor Brogan. The dynamic duo quickly learned to make this unique-to-Austin, New Zealand ice cream. Mack says that all you have to do is “put fruit and ice cream in the machine, and it’s done,” he laughs. “After that, you’ve just got to master your swirl.”

Patrons first have a choice of milk-based or nondairy vanilla ice cream. Using fresh fruit, there’s no artificial flavor to be found, and the notes of the fruit subtly shine in a delightful and enjoyable way. Anyone who likes a hint of fruity flavors in the cold treats will rejoice in the authentic taste of each soft and creamy bite of Zed’s Ice Cream.

Fans remain hopeful to see their fruit-filled ice cream take over Austin. While they continue to run Zed’s, East Austin may soon see another pop-up as Mack plans to grow the business beyond their cozy corner on East MLK Jr. Boulevard.
