Dear Eastside Catholic Community,

W

e are pleased to report another outstanding year at Eastside Catholic. The information shared here contains example after example of how this institution, in the 2019-20 school year, made a positive impact on our students and community through service and a commitment to Catholic values.

This report also reveals a school that is implementing its strategic plan and evolving to reach new heights of excellence in teaching, building nurturing relationships and service. Indeed, the past year provided us with even more evidence of the growing strength of the Eastside’s only Catholic 6-12 school.

We believe a deep sense of commitment lies at the center of each of the many achievements highlighted in this report’s timeline. Commitment to creating the absolute best teaching and learning environment for students is demonstrated through changes made last year and includes the following developments, to name a few: hiring a director of student services to help expand social-emotional support and resources for students and implement additional programming for college counseling; adding a faculty instructional coach to extend instructional strategies and curriculum developments; adding a director of equity and inclusion to develop programs for students, faculty, staff and community members; and restructuring our student life department to best serve our students in servant leadership and extracurricular endeavors.

The closing section of this annual report reveals an unwavering commitment among our alumni and friends to secure Eastside Catholic’s long-term success.

It was this support that led to another strong year in contributions. That dedication is evident in the physical manifestation of our new Clark Family Tennis Pavilion,

as well as the completed foundation for a future classroom and Commons expansion.

Standing together—united by a deep sense of commitment—we are expanding the boundaries of what is possible for Eastside Catholic. We remain deeply honored to serve as leaders for the school and deeply grateful to our faculty, staff, students, families, alumni and friends who are helping propel Eastside Catholic on an upward trajectory.

The Spirit of Generosity Philanthropy and thoughtful stewardship have been the catalyst for campus improvements over the past year. We are ever grateful for our community’s support and eager for you to see the changes when you return to campus.

➤ Clark Family Tennis Pavilion

➤ Track Resurfacing

Eastside Catholic is now home to four beautiful tennis courts made possible by a generous lead gift of $200,000 by the Clark Family Foundation. The Clark Family Foundation is driven by the idea that true leadership is both mentoring and giving back.

Many families joined with the Clark’s to support the project with contributions at varying levels. These courts will provide a home-court advantage for Eastside Catholic’s tennis team and will create a facility to be used by all EC students to augment our physical education curriculum.

Eastside Catholic is proud to act as a good steward of the resources entrusted to it. Since the track was installed in 2013, we have been assiduously setting funds aside each year for what we knew would be the eventual and needed resurface of our wellused track. As of 2019, the track surface was no longer viable for competition per the WIAA and the resurface project was a requirement for Spring 2021 home meet participation.

➤ Student Services Offices With an anonymous and generous gift from a passionate donor who trusts in the quality of care our Student Services Team imparts, we were able to reconfigure space in the Student Services Department to add two additional offices. These offices will be utilized by our director of equity and social action as well as additional counseling support staff.

➤ Nike Corporate Sponsorship Last spring, we entered into an agreement with Nike that provided uniforms and equipment at reduced prices and included a $25,000 branding package funded by Nike and BSN Sports.

➤ Classrooms and Commons Expansion Thanks to lead gifts and pledges of over $1,000,000 from generous donors, Eastside Catholic was able to build a foundation for an eventual Classroom and Commons Expansion. This expansion will house three new classrooms and an additional 5,000 square feet of classroom and instructional space.

This facility will also expand the footprint of our Commons area by more than 5,000 square feet, providing a more expansive meeting and lunchroom experience for our students. By building the foundation for this structure now, we were able to mitigate any disruption to our academic year.

Donna Hare Luger 19 4 6 – 2 0 2 0 Eastside Catholic was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Donna Luger. Her impact on Eastside Catholic is immeasurable and we are forever grateful for Donna’s support, love and guidance.

As Jim Kubacki, former President of EC says, “When I think of Donna, I think of Donna and John, John and Donna, a love story that went back to 4th grade in Spokane. Donna and John were the perfect complement to each other. While a strong person, Donna was a more restrained balance to John’s intensity. With an infectious laugh, Donna instantly made you feel like you were part of the Luger family. Together, their warmth and generosity knew no bounds. Donna was beautiful inside and out. And whether at the STARS Gala Auction or in the St. Louise parking lot doing recess duty with her grandchildren, Donna was always the best dressed person there.”

Donna and John together were visionaries who saw the limitless potential of Catholic Education and inherently understood how their philanthropy could act as a catalyst to change the lives of young people. In changing those lives and helping to build future leaders, Donna was guided by a fundamental appreciation of the gifts God had given her and

a desire to help others. As her good friend Mary Anne D’Ambrosio stated, “Whether it be through the Fulcrum Foundation, St. Louise Parish, Eastside Catholic School or Gonzaga University, she was a champion for them all and for the values they taught young people. She was an amazing woman whom I admired and miss greatly.”

The impact of Donna and John’s vision will resonate for generations to come. The Eastside Catholic campus as it is today is a testament to the foundation Donna helped build. “Her love story with John, and the children and grandchildren that love produced, has blessed our church and world in so many ways, seen an unseen. God bless you Donna, with peace and joy forever,” Fr. William Heric.

Donna was preceded in death by her daughter Lisa Luger ’87 and her brother Kevin Hare. She is survived by John Luger, her husband and partner of over 50 years, as well as her children: daughter Tanya Paszkeicz ’89 and spouse Anthony Paszkeicz, son John Luger Jr. ’91 and spouse Tami Luger ’90, and Justin Luger ’97.

She loved and adored her grandchildren: Stephanie Frey, Allison Frey, Jacqueline Frey ’17, Francesca Paszkeicz, Dante Paszkeicz, JJ Luger ’17, Jennifer Luger ’18, Jeorgia Luger ’25, Joselyn Luger ’27 and Joey Luger-Russo ’23.
