Dear Eastside Catholic Community,

I

t is our privilege to report on Eastside Catholic’s resolve during the unprecedented times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here, we share examples of how we managed the first full academic year of a pandemic and made a positive impact on our students and community through service, hard work and a commitment to Catholic values.

This report also speaks to how Eastside Catholic is executing its strategic plan and growing in teaching, relationships and service. The past year provided us with even more evidence of the resilience, creativity and commitment of the Eastside’s only coed, Catholic 6-12 school.

Eastside Catholic pivoted quickly to provide a highquality remote and hybrid education—always with an eye towards moving as quickly as possible to in-person learning. While our physical environment was different, the Holy Spirit was with us and our core values and Touchstones drove us to a successful year.

In this annual report, you will see not only the financial data, but the deep sense of commitment that lies at the center of each achievement or activity highlighted in the timeline. Our commitment to creating the absolute best teaching and learning environment for students is demonstrated through the examples below: • We created a rigorous and dynamic remote learning option for our students when circumstances necessitated it. Even in this remote environment, we found opportunities to bring students safely on campus to build community and give our students a sense of normalcy.

• Transitioning to a Hybrid Learning Model allowed half our students to learn on campus any given day and connected the other half using technology like the Owl cameras we purchased for every classroom. Through proctors, outdoor dining spaces and group vaccination opportunities for both students and faculty, EC continues to innovate for the benefit of our community.

• Community involvement and commitment helped EC evolve this year. The list of generous donors in this annual report reveals our community’s unwavering commitment to secure Eastside Catholic’s long-term

success. Examples include the Deviny family’s touching tribute to their son in the form of an endowed scholarship and our commitment to the EC Rededicated Program which ensured our values and Touchstones remain central at our school.

The 2020-21 school year may well be remembered within the context of COVID-19, but standing together, united by a deep sense of commitment, EC was defined not by the pandemic, but by the way students, faculty and staff responded to it. We remain deeply honored to serve as leaders for the school and grateful to our faculty, staff, students, families, alumni and friends who continually help Eastside Catholic become the best version of itself.

Remembering Patrick Jim and Mary Deviny had four children graduate from Eastside Catholic—Patrick ’86, Chris ’88, Greg ’89 and Susan ’90. The experiences that all their children had at EC, especially Patrick’s, has kept them connected and supportive of the school for over 30 years. After supporting the Patrick J. Deviny Scholarship Fund for many years, this past year they established the Patrick J. Deviny Memorial Endowment.

Patrick was an active student involved in a variety of extracurriculars during his high school years, including cross country, debate,

the academic decathlon team, drama and was co-editor of the school newspaper. During his senior year, Patrick was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare bone and soft tissue cancer. He had been having knee pain and, in May 1986, it was confirmed to be a tumor in his upper left femur. He began chemotherapy a month before graduating high school.

For the next six years, Patrick battled heroically against the disease. He spent his freshman year in college attending classes at the University of Washington during the week

and spending his weekends receiving chemotherapy at Seattle Children’s Hospital. He was accepted to the University of Notre Dame, and with the support of his family, deferred his enrollment to seek treatment. He was resolved to get well and attend Notre Dame for his sophomore year and remarkably, he was able to do so. Unfortunately, the cancer returned during his senior year at Notre Dame. He began chemotherapy and radiation treatments again while studying, intending to graduate.

With Patrick’s focus and determination, and the support of his family, friends, school and school administrators, he graduated from Notre Dame in 1990. After graduation, he accepted a job at Boeing as an aerospace engineer, working on the 777 program. He battled with cancer recurrences, seizures and treatment during this time until he passed away at home on June 23, 1992. Jim and Mary said, “Throughout it all, he was able to enjoy the good that is present each day.”

Jim and Mary Deviny are grateful for the time Patrick spent at EC and the community that continues to be part of their lives. They feel blessed that Patrick had the opportunity to travel to Europe the summer before his senior year with EC Teacher Dean Sawhill and classmates, to bike and explore and experience the world.

This year, they chose to establish an endowment to help more students experience Eastside Catholic and the education and leadership it provides.

The Deviny’s are honored to read the letters they receive from scholarship recipients each year thanking them for supporting their EC experience. They shared, “The scholarship gives us a feeling of accomplishment and gives our family a sense of direction and unity.”

Eastside Catholic is forever grateful for the Deviny family’s generosity, continued presence and commitment to the value of an EC education.

Their endowment will serve students for generations, and honors Patrick’s persevering energy and effort in all things he pursued.

Eastside Catholic truly appreciates the dedication and generosity of our community.

As an example of the work done through the EC Rededicated Program, the Athletics Activation team worked together to develop a new program to bring a shared vision and foundational expectations for all sports teams at EC. This program was launched last year. The new Core Covenants mural in the Athletic Pavilion serves as a daily affirmation of integrity and sportsmanship, both on and off the field.
