The Immediate Impact of Philanthropy

Transforming Student Lives

How One Family’s Experience Led to Helping Others

TheEastside Catholic Student Services Department and Academic Resources Department work closely together to help students reach their full potential. Each day, the staff asks themselves, “How can we better impact a student’s success?” Responses may vary from student to student. However, a pivotal moment arose when working closely with one family which revealed the potential to positively impact many others.

In 2022, a family whose student beneﬁted from accommodations and Eastside Catholic support classes hired a respected educational psychology consultant to assist in developing an academic support plan. From their own student’s results and success, the family recognized the potential beneﬁts for other students as well. Subsequently, the family offered to fund Dr. Elizabeth Holland’s involvement in helping additional students at EC. Dr. Holland is a licensed psychologist with a private practice and she teaches and supervises doctoral students at the University of Washington Psychology Clinic.

A Comprehensive Approach to Student Success

With Dr. Holland’s expertise, Eastside Catholic School has increased the number of students it supports with accommodations. Her work is a testament to the power of focused, individualized attention in addressing the diverse educational needs of students.

At the heart of Eastside Catholic’s strategy is the understanding that student success is not a one-size-fits-all proposition. It varies from student to student, with each individual presenting unique challenges and potential. Dr. Holland’s approach is holistic, beginning with comprehensive testing and assessments to determine the specific needs and strengths of each student.

The process of working with Dr. Holland is thorough and considerate of each student’s specific circumstances. Initial referrals are made by a student’s school counselor, initiating a detailed assessment process. This process includes meetings with

parents or guardians, input collection through questionnaires from caregivers and teachers and student testing spanning from one to four hours. Dr. Holland then compiles a report of results and recommendations and this is shared with the student’s family to create a tailored action plan.

The Impact on Students

Dr. Holland’s expertise has been incredibly beneficial in identifying and supporting students with learning challenges. Her assessments provide critical insights into students’ learning profiles, uncovering challenges such as dyslexia, ADHD, and other learning-related issues. This information is pivotal in developing effective accommodation plans, ensuring that each student receives the support they need to excel academically and socially.

A notable benefit of Dr. Holland’s involvement is the convenience and accessibility of her services. Testing and assessments are conducted on-site at Eastside Catholic, eliminating the need for students to be pulled out of school, saving time and reducing the stress associated with testing. This approach makes the testing process more comfortable for students.

Beyond merely identifying learning challenges, Dr. Holland’s work empowers both students and teachers. Armed with a

deeper understanding of each student’s learning style and needs, teachers can adapt their instructional methods accordingly.

Dr. Holland’s work with individual students has a broader impact on the school community. By addressing the specific needs of one student, valuable insights are gained that can benefit numerous others. This ripple effect is evident in the growing number of students who have been able to take advantage of the accommodations and support identified through her assessments.

A Testament to the Power of Philanthropy

The success of Dr. Holland’s involvement with Eastside Catholic highlights the significant impact that targeted philanthropic efforts can have on educational institutions. Her work, supported by the generosity of donors, has not only improved students’ academic performance but also enhanced their overall well-being and school experience.

Dr. Elizabeth Holland’s contributions to Eastside Catholic have been invaluable. Her expertise and personalized approach to student services helps our school address the diverse needs of our students. This case is a powerful example of how focused support and expert guidance can improve students’ educational experiences and outcomes.
