Recognised as one of the finest moorland courses in Scotland and the top ranked golf course in Glasgow and surrounding area.

Introduction

The East Renfrewshire Golf Club (East Ren) was founded on 18 January 1922, with the James Braid designed course opened for play on 12 May 1923. Only minor course enhancements have been made over the years, a testament to the original course design and the natural qualities the land offers to the golf course. It is one of the very best examples of Braid’s design philosophy of maximising the lie of the land.

It is today recognised as one of the finest moorland courses in Scotland and the top ranked golf course in the Glasgow and surrounding area. In 2024 the club was nominated for the title of ‘The Best Golf Club in Scotland Under £100’.

With its rolling fairways, loch and burns, and spectacular views over Glasgow and beyond, the course is a stunning and fair test for golfers of all abilities. East Ren is a private members’ club where ordinary members have voting rights at the annual AGM. Members comment on the warm welcome they receive at the Clubhouse. There are a variety of membership categories including Ordinary, Young Adult and Junior, to suit all ages and abilities.

There are a number of regular games and team matches available which ensure that a newcomer can enjoy meeting and having a game with other members. Weekly and monthly medals and competitions are held throughout the calendar year. Regular social occasions also assist new members getting to know other members.

Practice Range

Conveniently adjacent to the 1st hole and clubhouse, the practice range serves for the pre-round warm-up and for golfers seeking regular practice and improvement. At 100 yards wide and 320 yards long, the area can comfortably accommodate multiple players practising both full swing shots to multiple targets and short game practice utilising the practice green and bunker.

Practice Hole

Adjacent to the 1st hole, a picturesque practice hole offering a variety of shot options. Fine-tune your swing while experiencing challenging target golf across a burn to a raised green with a choice of flags to aim for. Allows for shots of any distance up to 170 yards you can practice your long and short game in tree-lined seclusion.

Putting Green

A testing green is maintained to replicate on-course conditions and prepare for the round ahead. Arrive early to gain pace, feel and putting rhythm, and enjoy a great place to meet partners, friends and exchange greetings with groups teeing-off on the 1st.

Junior Development

We have been incredibly fortunate to receive support from Scottish Golf to develop our Junior members and have plans in place to encourage and grow the number of playing members within.

A wonderfully dedicated group of volunteers assist throughout the year at various Junior events, and we are always appreciative of more members volunteering their time. Sunday Junior Club meets every week between 2pm and 4pm and is a fabulous opportunity for the children to meet new friends and to improve their golf skills.

This club is open to all Juniors, regardless of ability, and the sessions are held on both the six – hole practice ground, and the main 18-hole course. There is a small charge for this which covers the cost of our Teaching Professional Gavin Hay’s time for lessons.

Operating primarily as a learning and junior coaching facility, the practice range doubles up to offer six short practice holes to encourage juniors into golf in readiness for the main course, and allow for members’ short-game fine-tuning. Every year during the school summer holidays we hold Junior Week. This is a five-day event where the children can play ‘the big course’, use the practice area, improve their chipping and putting skills, and work towards prizes that are awarded on the last day. Participants range in age from 6 to 17.

There is also the opportunity for parents to join in the Bonar Walker competition, where parent and child compete as a team to attempt to win the coveted Junior Week trophy.

Part of our support from Scottish Golf was financial, and we were able to purchase sets of junior golf clubs, which are available for hire through the club office – please contact them for further details.

Professionals’ Shop

We have a wonderful Professional Team in Stewart Russell and Gavin Hay.

Stewart operates the outstanding shop and provides an excellent range of services to the club, members, guests and visitors. His services include repairs, club hire, tuition and Trackman fitting.

The East Ren members benefit hugely from Gavin’s coaching skills and his expertise with Trackman. Gavin provides individual and group lessons, and can support members with club fitting.

Both Stewart and Gavin are huge assets to the club and are an integral part of the overall East Ren team.

The team is open seven days, and Stewart would be delighted to assist you.

For information on lessons, please contact Gavin directly by email at gavinhay44@yahoo.com

The Course

The course has all the features associated with a James Braid design - elevated tees, undulating fairways and plateau greens. Although initially without trees, the course now features a variety of trees lining many of the fairways. At 6107 yards this is undoubtedly a course where thought and care are required on every shot.

Given the elevated course setting, the strength of the wind can change the club selection or choice of shot dramatically.

East Ren has many reciprocal golf agreements in place with wonderful courses up and down the Country.
