30YearsofCommunity-Driven Excellence

The East of the River Steelband was the dream and work of Dr. Gladys Whitworth Bray, founded in 1993 to bring this unique, cultural, and musical experience to youth living east of the Anacostia River. Building on her foundation, we continue to provide youth with music education, life skills, and cultural education. Marking30yearsin2023wecelebrate youth, communities, and cultures. Over the years, the program has provided music education, arts, and cultural education to hundreds of children and youth through its programs.

Music Education

The East of the River Boys and Girls Steelband provides music education in steel pan music by master pannist Roger Greenidge. Our musical repertoire consists of Caribbean an calypso, rhythm and blues, jazz, hip hop, and gospel. The Steelban performs at a variety of events an venues throughout metropolitan Washington,DC.

Youth Development

To complement music instruction, our EOTRS Leadership and Life SkillsAcademy(ELLA)includes: academicreinforcement, healtheducation, substanceabuseprevention, etiquette, social skills, topics of interest,and relevancetoparticipants.

Cultural Heritage & Education

History and culture of the African diaspora, locally and globally is infused throughout programming. From trips to the Gullah Islands to Trinidad and Tobago, additional arts activities, field trips, and workshop sessions, our program allows youth new perspectives and opportunities to explore new cultures in addition to their own richheritage.
