WELCOME TO EA ST WEDD I N GS Written by Emma Kemsley

Welcome to the 2016/17 edition of East Weddings. In our pages you’ll find everything you need to know for planning your big day from how to take the first steps in finding the perfect venue to choosing what your guests might eat! We’re here to help! This time two years ago I was in a tiz. My wedding was just a couple of weeks away and my to do list was getting longer by the day. I still hadn’t organised my seating plan let alone written place cards, my idea of a ‘message in a bottle’ as a guest book (we had a beach wedding) had become a disaster, as I couldn’t find a demijohn, my fiancé couldn’t find shoes, RSVPs were missing, the options for hairstyles was endless – need I go on? Looking back, it really didn’t need to be like this. I was lucky enough to have an efficient wedding planner, caring mother who was willing to help and two hands-on bridesmaids. Everything did work out perfectly (apart from my dress breaking but that’s a whole other story), so why did I feel the need to be the most dramatic bridezilla the world has seen? It’s simple: unrealistic planning advice! To start, we’ve rounded up some honest wedding planning tips. No fuss, just some straight forward advice…you’re welcome!

ORGANISATION Organisation will play a key part in keeping your sanity. Ring binders and Excel spreadsheets will become your best friends. They’re great for staying on track of RSVPs, costs and tasks. It’s also useful for recording everyone’s address, which you’ll need for save the dates, invitations and thank you cards – I’m sorry to say this is a lesson I learned the hard way. DON’T DO IT ALONE You may want to be in control of the entire wedding but don’t be afraid to accept help. If a friend is able to assist with a specific detail take them up on the offer. A friend of mine helped with writing my table plan – her handwriting is much better than my scrawl! If the person is completely incompetent of the suggested task however, politely decline. BE SELFISH You’ll never please everyone. Understand this from the offset and the process will be a lot easier. There will always be people who can’t make certain dates, family members that don’t like your ideas, someone who doesn’t like chicken – so what? It’s your wedding day, do what makes you both happy. However, at no point never ever be nasty. DIY PROJECTS Avoid like the plague. Those cute mason jars wrapped in hessian look simple enough on Pinterest but are a good way for you to wind up sobbing in a heap of stranded material two weeks before your big day. DIY cake? Unless you’re Mary Berry don’t bother. DON’T TRY TO BE UNIQUE No wedding is unique, so stop trying right now. Flowers, colour schemes, cute signage – it has all been done before. You’ll be able to put your own stamp on the day by just being you. Stick to your budget and stop aiming for a Kim Kardashian extravaganza of a wedding.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT VENUE Written by Katrina Otter

Katrina Otter is a Cambridgeshire based wedding planner and event organiser. www.katrinaotterweddings.co.uk

Choosing the perfect wedding venue is one of the hardest decisions, if not the hardest decision you’re likely to make along your wedding planning journey. Where do you start and how do you even begin to choose between the thousands of stunning stately homes, fabulous sites for marquees, city chic hotels and rustic country barns? Before you rush head first into visiting potential venues it’s important to take some time to think about what’s most important to you as a couple, what sort of day you see yourselves having and the vibe you want for your day i.e. do you see yourselves having a casual or formal day, city chic wedding or a classically elegant country affair?

Once you’ve determined the overall style and vibe for your day then you’re probably still left with too many options. To help narrow these down even further, try answering the following questions as the answers to which will save you valuable time in the long run: • How many guests do you want to invite to your Ceremony, Reception and Evening Reception? • What is your budget (provisional/guideline), including projected savings and family contributions, and what proportion of this would you ideally like to spend on your wedding venue? • Where geographically would you like to hold your wedding? • When would you like to hold your wedding? i.e. do you have particular date, month or season in mind or are you flexible?

VENUES

• What time do you want your wedding to start and end? • What kind of ceremony would you like to have and would you like this to be as close to your venue as possible or even in-house? • Are you happy to use preferred or recommended suppliers or do you want to bring in your own? • Do you want a marquee? • Do you want to bring your own alcohol? • Do you want any extras like fireworks, candles etc? • Do you want a blank canvas venue or one that comes pre-styled? • Do you need accommodation on-site or nearby? If you’ve answered all of these questions you’ll now have a solid foundation to start researching venues and most importantly some criteria to help you narrow down the options! Armed with your search criteria, Google is a great starting point but there are also some fantastic resources out there to help point you in the right direction and make your venue search easier including wedding blogs, Pinterest and bridal magazines, with my personal favourite being the utterly invaluable UK Wedding Venue Directory Coco Wedding Venues. Once you’ve narrowed down a list of suitable venues (I’d recommend between 6 and 12) it’s finally time to start arranging venue appointments. Make sure you go to these appointments fully prepared and don’t be afraid to ask questions! Venue visits normally last around an hour so make notes, take pictures and if you can’t remember what you saw or discussed then always go back for a second, third or even forth visit and for total peace of mind why not take a friend or family member with you for a second opinion. Finally, before you hand over deposit payments and sign on the dotted line make sure you fully understand the venue payment terms, what’s included and the all-important Terms and Conditions!

FLOWERS

Flower POWER

Wedding flower trends are constantly evolving. To make the decision a little easier we have forecast the top of the crops for this year’s weddings… Romantic Luxury Think big, think grand, think beautiful! Blooms are adding some height this year. Use tall glass vases or droop elegant arrangements over the alter. Stems should be kept hidden and soft flowers such as hydrangea, hyacinths and orchids in creamy pastel colours need to be used. This is only a style for brides with a big flower budget! Wild garden The just picked from the garden look was a popular choice last year and it doesn’t look like it will be going anywhere for the next year. Mix together floras that look like they have come from the garden; soft blossoms and greenery. This is a great option for small budgets and it smells great too! Hanging vases Fill small glass vases with the flowers of your choice (bright colours work best) and dot them around your wedding. They look great hanging from trees and will work as a colourful backdrop to photographs. It also works as a nice touch to table plans and guest books. Crowns Floral crowns are still the must-have wedding accessory. Last year they were mainly reserved for bridesmaids and only the bravest of brides but this year expect to see them as gorgeously romantic alternative to the veil. Generally featuring white flowers and greenery, they are perfect

if you’re having a country or festival inspired wedding. Simplicity Delicate soft white flowers such as roses, hydrangeas and gypsophila are great for simplistic weddings. They make a beautiful contrast against rustic wood décor and are ideal for a variety of wedding themes including country, fairytale and beach. Rainbow The colours of the rainbow are going to be popping up in weddings across the region this summer. Bold and bright bouquets make for a great colour pop against your dress and stand out in photos, especially if teamed with some bright shoes to match! Or perhaps you’d prefer to choose colourful centre pieces to liven up table décor. Vibrant colours such blue, red, yellow and purple are great to use. Pretty pastels Pastels come into fashion every spring and generally follow through to summer. However, this year pastels are taking an even softer approach. Petals will be soft and creamy tones, honoring an English garden. Pastels are a great way to combine floral and bridesmaid colours. Paper Paper is an ideal solution for a DIY wedding. You’ll find lots of inspiration and tips on wedding blogs and Pinterest (/eastlifemag). It’s relatively easy to create and you can go all out with the addition of paper chains as décor.

HOW TO CHOOSE AN OUTFIT THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU

FASHION

MOTHER OF THE BRIDE

Written by Kay Davidson, style director at www.aliciakaystyle.com It’s a big day for the mother of the bride as it is for the bride herself and getting ‘The’ right dress can be a daunting experience. Here are my top five tips and advice that will help you look and feel fabulous… 1. PLAN YOUR OUTFIT Look through the dresses and jackets you have in your wardrobe and try on your favourites. Pinpoint what it is about these particular dresses or jackets that you really like. Is it the fabric? The way it flatters your figure, the neckline, the length of the sleeve or colour? Make a few notes about these details or if you have nothing in your wardrobe have a look on Pinterest or the Internet and collect ideas about what you would like your outfit to look like. 2. WEARING THE CORRECT UNDERWEAR Nothing ages you more than if your bust is sitting too low in a poorly fitted bra. Many styles have very transparent lace tops that mean you can only wear a strapless bra. If you are not confident or feel they just don’t give you enough support to enjoy your day and night leave those styles for those that can, and opt for ones which allow you to wear a full support bra. And don’t forget your knicker choice! If you feel wearing shapewear enhances your look then go ahead but don’t ruin your day by wearing such constrictive shapewear that you feel uncomfortable as soon as you sit down. 3. THE FIT OF YOUR OUTFIT A dress or jacket that is too big on certain parts such as your waist can be just as unflattering as one that is too small. If you love a

dress/jacket but feel it is too square, check to see if it can easily be altered. Nipping in the waist or tapering the side seam over the hip can turn it from a pretty high street buy into something tailor made and stunning on you. 4. THE STYLE OF THE OUTFIT The easiest jacket for all women to wear finishes just below the waistline and should have some shape to create a waist. Another crucial style feature is the neckline of the dress. Make sure it is not too high drawing attention to the neck area and equally not too low revealing too much cleavage. 5. ACCESSORIES You can do wonders with accessories so don’t be put off a plainer dress if that is what you feel great in because it can easily be lifted and transformed with stunning accessories. Go for a contrast colour to really add pop to your outfit.

HOW TO PICK YOUR

DREAM DRESS

Save yourself from dress stress with our guide to choosing the right style for you In all the excitement of planning your wedding over the next few months, one of the most important things will be finding the perfect dress. This season the bridal runways have been full of swoon-worthy gowns. Tulle overskirts and off-the-shoulder necklines have all made a comeback. Though an on-trend dress may seem like the perfect choice for you it’s important to choose a style that suits your shape and figure.

Before the ultimate shopping trip begins have an idea about which style you prefer. Though this may change when you start trying on dresses it will help to eliminate options. Becoming familiar with styles and design terminology will be a huge help. Here are some guidelines to help you get started‌ EMPIRE Empire gowns have a raised waistline that starts right under the bust, flowing to a skirt that skims over the hips then flairs slightly to the floor. The style is suitable to most figures.

Silhouette The A-line or princess dress has no marked waist and the vertical seams flow from the shoulders down to a flared skirt, creating an A shape. It is a popular choice among brides. If you carry your weight in the middle, this silhouette is a good choice. Full gown If you’re dreaming of a fairytale wedding then a full gown will make your day complete. Romantic and elegant, full gowns generally have a fitted bodice and very full skirt. You’ll find full sleeves, sweetheart cuts, high necks and more options available. A full gown is ideal if you want to hide hips and thighs. Mermaid A sexy style that shows off your curves, the mermaid is great if you are body confident. The dress is tight down the body and begins to flow out at the knees. The body restriction can make it a little tricky to walk in so make sure you get plenty of practice before the big day.

Sheath For a figure-flattering fit get a sheath dress. The dress is designed to fit close to the body and typically falls around the knees or lower thighs. The tight body fit doesn’t allow for body flaws but it can elongate the body, making a great choice for petite brides. The Duchess of Cambridge is a big fan of this style too! Our favourite trends New colour alert Dazzle your way down the aisle this wedding season in a dress that breaks the white tradition. Tulle and texture The tulle design has been added to a number of necklines and can look fabulous on most shapes and sizes. It’s great for added drama. 30s glam The vintage vibe is still on trend with dresses embracing 30s glam. Slinky fitted gowns made from fluid fabric, delicate crystals and embellished details, add to the wedding wow factor.

LET THEM EAT

CAKE Anmar Odendal is the award-winning Pastry Chef and wedding cake baker at the the Swan at Lavenham Hotel & Spa. Here she gives some pointers to consider when deciding on your wedding cake and explains how she goes about designing a custom designed cake for the bride’s special day. Book ahead Allow plenty of time. Some cake makers can be booked months ahead and their summer diaries fill up for the coming wedding season even before it starts. It is not uncommon to see cake makers announce on various social media sites that they are fully booked until the end of summer. Depending on the cake design, it can sometimes take months to mature, such as in the case of a rich fruit cake, or decorations like dainty flowers might take weeks to make. View examples Meet your cake maker and ask to see their portfolio. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are also great sources to see people’s work and you can often find photos from other weddings that will give you an idea of the baker’s style. Check the production Ask your cake maker about their production area and the processes they follow to design and produce your wedding cake. Many cake makers work from home; it’s always a good

24

Download Our App Today!

idea to ask them if their health and safety and food hygiene certificates are valid for the premises they work from. Lots of your guests will be eating your cake - you can never be too safe. If you feel unhappy about the area, find another baker. Flavour combinations The sky is the limit when choosing the flavour for your wedding cake. Most bakers have a list of their most popular flavours, but they will always be happy to consider any ideas or combinations that you might have. A big trend is to have a different flavour for each tier of the cake meaning you can satisfy more guests’ personal tastes. It is not uncommon to see wedding cakes with a fruit layer, a sponge layer and a gluten free or speciality flavour. The tradition of having a small top tier that consists of a fruit cake is still very much alive, and if you are unsure about what to choose a safe bet is to have one layer with a more traditional flavour like Madagascan vanilla pod or lemon and poppy seed, and one flavour that will be less traditional such as dark chocolate and chilli or caramelised walnut and coffee. Design ideas If you have a clear idea of how you want your cake to look, make a sketch or write the ideas down. Photos and pictures from magazines will help your cake maker design your perfect wedding cake. The industry is very competitive and asking a baker to copy a cake exactly

CAKES

Cake by Anmar Odendal

from a picture is very much frowned upon. There is no limit to the design of a wedding cake - it doesn’t have to be white, have a flower on it or be fruit flavoured. Those days are long gone! Your cake maker will work with you and together you will come up with an agreed design for your cake. Most cake makers will produce a drawing to show you what the final design will look like. Dietary requirements Cake makers can easily make gluten or dairy free wedding cakes. If you are unsure about having sponges, there are other beautiful options like towers of meringue kisses or macarons that are both gluten free. Set up and delivery Always remember to ask your cake maker who will be delivering and setting up the cake. You might need to make special arrangements to enter the venue; make sure you provide them with a delivery time and any other information they might need. Remember to arrange a table for the cake; it’s not uncom-

mon to arrive at a venue with no one in sight and no idea where to set up the cake! Hired items A cake stand and a knife are not always included in the price of your cake; most cake bakers can provide them at a small additional cost. If you hire these items make sure you arrange for them to be kept in a safe place after the reception, and how they will be returned to the cake maker. Bespoke wedding cakes by Anmar Anmar creates wedding cakes not only for the Swan at Lavenham Hotel & Spa, but also for private clients. When choosing her as your cake baker a complimentary tasting and design session will be provided where you will meet with Anmar at the hotel, taste the flavours you are interested in and discuss the design of the cake. She will then proceed to design the wedding cake of your dreams. You can see more of Anmar’s wedding cakes at www.crumbsuffolk.co.uk or www.theswanatlavenham.co.uk

Last year I shared my top trend predictions including organic and wild garden flowers, embellished and textural linens, watercolour and festoon lighting. The good news is that this year promises to be just as inspirational! So here it is, my guide to the summer wedding décor trends to look out for and be inspired by... UNIQUE CROCKERY & ENHANCED CUTLERY Whether you’re planning a relaxed countryside wedding or a classically elegant affair, crockery and cutlery will be big news this year. That’s because there are now an ever growing number of suppliers in the UK who offer inspirational crockery and glassware to enhance your overall wedding design. From contemporary and luxurious crockery and glassware to vintage finds, with my personal

and relatively local favourite suppliers being Hélène Millot and Duchess & Butler. MONOGRAMS Monograms are an ever increasingly popular way to add that personal touch to your wedding. This year, this décor trend will be seen on everything from bespoke stationery and personalised stamps to lightboxes and monogramed dancefloors. Head on over to Pinterest where a simple search will show you hundreds of different ways to incorporate this key décor trend. WEDDING CHAIRS Gone are the days of being restricted to using the chairs provided by your wedding venue or marquee company. There are now an endless array of different

types and styles of wedding chairs available to choose from which is great news for anyone looking for a simple and relatively inexpensive way to change or enhance the style of their wedding. This year look out for spruced up chiavari chairs, beautiful and contemporary ghost chairs and the mismatched rustic effect. SPRING GREENS AND OVERSIZED BLOOMS For the past couple of years the wild, ‘justpicked-from-the-garden’ look for floral arrangements and bridal bouquets has been a big trend. This dominant trend is sticking around but going oversized and dramatic – think luscious white blooms and an abundance of overflowing spring greens. STYLED BACKDROPS Taking inspiration from celebrity weddings, shop windows, visual merchandise and of course Pinterest we’re seeing a growing trend for creative backdrops, especially for ceremonies. Some ideas of how to incorporate this

trend include paper flower walls, ceremonial arches, DIY garlands, custom signage and murals. HANGING & SUSPENDED DÉCOR Hanging and suspended décor is one of the most visually impactful ways to create that extra magical WOW factor. Key to this is lighting and this year expect to notice lighting! Think dramatic, statement and stand-out installations including ornate chandeliers, canopies of twinkling lights, hanging filament bulbs, coloured uplighters and designer shades. Other suspended décor trends include floral or foliage chandeliers, cascading garlands and geometrics. Katrina Otter is a Cambridgeshire based wedding planner and event organiser. RAISE A GLASS FOR THE

TOASTMASTER Rosalind Hamill tells us why a toastmaster can be a just as helpful as a wedding planner... By engaging with a toastmaster, you will have a personal assistant from the first contact – right through your special day until the party is over. TIMING As a couple, you have decided on many suppliers to make your day special, and timing is critical. A delay here can impact on something important elsewhere. A toastmaster will keep it together by: assisting the photographer with group mustering - always a challenge; the venue by informing guests where to put their coats/gifts/cards, when the cake is being cut, when the speeches will occur, who should be where and when. HERDING KITTENS How frustrating…it is time for more photographs/to witness the cutting of the wedding cake/the first dance and the ma jority of your guests have dispersed. A toastmaster will ensure these important moments are known and everyone is gathered. A TRAINED STRESS CONSULTANT A toastmaster will help with those awful nerves which can ruin your enjoyment. We can turn that around and safeguard your peace of mind for exquisite moments building a memorable occasion. Stress management is akin to speech coaching and nerves may cause the person to speak too quickly or too softly. Those well thought through memories and happy events you wish to share, jokes which should raise

a friendly smile and banter with your best friends – could all vanish because your audience missed the punch-line or simply couldn’t hear you. Confident voice projection and overcoming nerves does not happen over-night. We work on those together. MASTER OF CEREMONIES (MC) AND PUBLIC SPEAKER As a master of ceremonies, the red-tailed coat of a toastmaster is visual and striking. It is designed so the person can be located in an instant. An MC will announce agenda items for award evenings or celebrity guests during product launches. For more details visit www.toastmaster-eastanglia.co.uk www.facebook.com/toast.mastereastanglia.9

FOOD

TRENDS

Tamsin Beeson, wedding co-ordinator at the award-winning Hylands House, Essex (www.hylandsestateweddings.co.uk), gives an insight into what’s on the plate for wedding guests this year.

HOME COMFORTS There is a trend in reinventing classic dishes at weddings such as traditional roasts, fish and chips and bangers and mash that are often associated with happy childhood memories. Family favourites also include prawn cocktail, soup, sausage and mash, profiteroles and cheesecake.

MINIATURE BRITISH Traditional British fare in miniature form is also becoming widespread and is replacing the old-style evening buffet. This usually consists of mini dishes of pies and mash and little toad in the holes.

BRUNCH How do you like your eggs? Brunches look set to become popular. Think eggs benedict or royale, avocado and bacon, pancakes, smoked salmon, croissants and continental breads – all washed down with Champagne and Bucks Fizz.

Afternoon Tea It is still trendy to have a vintage and often beautifully accessorised afternoon tea. Tables are decorated with flowers and tea lights, delicate and colourful crockery and antique style cutlery. Caterers can always add a gourmet twist to a traditional English tea – beautifully iced cup-cakes, finger sandwiches with exotic cheeses, mini-cakes, lovely berry meringues and savoury as well as sweet scones.

WEATHER

GOT THE BROLLIE READY?

THOMAS HARPER, HIRINGS TEAM LEADER AT THE HYLANDS HOUSE, GIVES TIPS ON HOW TO BEAT THE GREAT BRITISH WEATHER

Rain in the morning, hot and sunny in the afternoon, storm clouds in the evening – this could be just one day of weather conditions in the UK. Every cloud can have a silver lining though as long as we are prepared. Here are a few tips to ensure a wedding shines through despite the rain: • Select a venue that has space and beautiful backdrops for photography both inside and out. Pick one that has lovely garden vistas and rooms that look stunning on their own, even without a theme. • Have his and her colourful wellie boots and provide white or pastel umbrellas. Today there are umbrellas fitted with fairy lights for a magical appeal in the rain. On the bright side, people in boots and umbrella, splashing in the rain can make adorable and fun wedding pictures. • Keep in mind that you may want to touch-up your make-up and adjust your hair after being

outside in the rain, so ensure that there is a private area to do this. • Dot floor lanterns with flickering LED lamp candles around paths and doorways to add to the atmosphere on gloomy days. •Take care that no-one has to walk across muddy areas. Choose a venue with ample car parking on solid ground and with a gravelled path. • Ensure there is ample cloakroom or hanging space for wet coats and umbrellas • Light can be important on a dull day so it is good to have a venue with large windows that let any possible sun stream through. • Take the chill off and give a warm welcome. Although rooms can look cosy if they are decorated with colours such as reds, make sure that they really are warm and can be heated properly with no nasty drafts. Laugh and dance: rain or shine, you are still getting married to someone you love and that’s what counts! www.hylandsestateweddings.co.uk

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION All aspects of your wedding are important, but after the confetti settles it’s the photos of your big day that you’ll look at for years to come. The arrival of your wedding photography is an exciting moment. Like most brides after the hype you’ll be on a wedding comedown trying to find things to do to fill the time that was once full of wedding magazines, table plans and invite replies. It’s a great chance to relive the day with friends and family, which is why it’s an area not to be overlooked. While you can hunt around and find mega bargains on wedding stationary and bunting, photography is not an element you should be scrimping on advises Nick Ridley (www.nickridleyphotography.co.uk), an Essex based photographer, who has been snapping weddings since 2009. “Like with everything in life, you get what you pay for,” he says. “If you hire a budget wedding photographer, expect budget photos.” Don’t panic just yet if your budget won’t allow for a skilled photographer, Nick

explains how you can still get amazing pictures without the hefty price tag: “If it were me booking on a real shoestring budget, I think I’d look around for up and coming or aspiring young photographers who are trying to get somewhere in the photography world and want to build a portfolio. “If not, I’d look to book my favourite photographer for a small section of my wedding, to see if they would price it like a portrait session. Another option to consider is digital only packages since albums are quite expensive to make. There’s been a big uptake on digital only, I think it’s a shame as we all know what happens to digital photos, they don’t see the light of day. If you do go digital, make sure you pick a handful of good images and invest in some decent framing!” Most good photographers will advise booking around 12 to 18 months in advance. It’s likely that sought-after photographers will be snapped up so avoid leaving it around the six month mark. To make choosing your photographer a little easier research is key.

PHOTOGRAPHY

“The most important thing is to have a good look at photographers in your area and find one with a style you like. Good photographers have a real consistency in their style and you should pick the one that best represents how you see your day being portrayed,” explains Nick. “The best advice I can give is to find a photographer who does pre-wedding or engagement shoots as part of their package. It will not only give you some lovely pictures of you as a couple but also get you used to your photographer and how to be directed without the added pressure of it being on your big day.” Over recent years wedding photography has become much more creative. The obvious shift comes from film to digital but the likes of social media sites such as Pinterest and Instagram have inspired creative poses and a trend for vintage looks, muted tones and imaginative lighting. This year has seen photography take flight with the use of a flying drone. A drone is a fan-

tastic way of capturing one-of-a-kind content. However, the law on flying drones is quite strict and commissioned professional photographers will need a drone pilot’s licence. If you don’t want to run the risk that comes with a drone, there’s still plenty of ways of capturing the perfect moment. Nick adds: “Forget about the photos and the photographer and have a perfect day! I spend 80% of the day watching people interact, look, smile, laugh and cry. An experienced photographer knows where these moments are likely to happen and it’s their job to make sure it’s recorded. “If you’ve picked the right photographer they will have researched your venue and will take you to the best places for great images and backdrops. I ask the couple to make sure they have around 45 minutes clear around reception drinks for us to go for a walk and capture some images of them alone. It’s a part of the day when the couple have a glass of fizz in their hand and a smile on their face and you can take them away from the bustle and the confetti to enjoy their moment.”

ARE FOREVER

RINGS

DIAMONDS In the chaos that surrounds planning your big day, the wedding rings can often become a second thought (or perhaps that was just me). It’s a piece of jewellery that you will want to wear for the rest of your life so it has to be perfect. Whether you fancy something classic or a band that’s a little more fancy, read our tips for picking the right style for you. PRECIOUS METALS Choosing the metal for your wedding ring is a good place to start. You may be surprised to learn that there are more options available than just gold, silver and platinum. It’s important to talk to a jeweller to get a better understanding of what metal will be most suitable for your lifestyle. YELLOW GOLD This is often a classic choice for bride and grooms as 9ct, 14ct and 18ct are combined with stronger metals making it ideal for everyday life. WHITE GOLD White gold is great for complimenting a platinum engagement ring and is often budget-friendly. White gold rings are plated with rhodium to enhance its appearance, which will wear over time. So if you do decide on this metal keep in mind you’ll likely need it re-plated every so often. PLATINUM A tough, white-coated metal, platinum has become a firm favourite for modern couples. Its strength will stand-up against everyday wear, leaving it practically unmarked forever.

However, platinum isn’t cheap and will likely pinch a large portion of your budget. PALLADIUM Reliable and honest jewellers will recommend this as a great alternative to platinum. It’s a similar colour, strong and comes with a budget friendly price tag. TITANIUM This light and scratch-resistant metal has become increasingly popular in recent years. With a different shade of colour to other popular choices such platinum and palladium, it’s a modern metal upping its game in the wedding stakes. SHAPE AND STYLE Choosing a shape to sit perfectly alongside your engagement ring may prove a little trickier than you might expect, especially if you have a raised diamond or quirky style. It’s likely you’ve never noticed the shape of your engagement ring but this will soon become clear once paired with various wedding bands. There are a variety of curved and fitted rings available and an experienced jeweller will be able to advise the best option.
