Get healthy get active! Thousands of local residents of all ages are getting active and healthier as part of a range of projects run by or supported by your Council. The wide range of popular activities helps to tackle issues such as obesity, smoking, heart and respiratory issues, together with dementia. Our HealthWorks team provide ‘Steady and Strong’ classes that are aimed at older adults who may be at risk of falling. Led by qualified Postural Stability Instructors, the exercises are aimed at improving strength, balance, flexibility and the confidence to carry out daily activities. They also work with Macmillan Cancer Support to develop and promote our Cancer Physical Activity Scheme for those people who have had a diagnosis of cancer and are either undergoing or have completed their treatment. The activity scheme helps to tackle the effects of cancer treatment by reducing fatigue, stress and anxiety and improving low mood/ depression and building strength (see page 4). This year, thousands of residents of all ages have signed up for a number of exciting physical activity initiatives including a ‘New Year New You’, ‘Summer of Sport’ programme and ‘Park Sport’- a programme for children of between 8-16 years of age. Cabinet Lead for Health & Community Safety, Cllr Tonia Craig, said: “It’s great to see so many residents of all ages benefiting from a wide range of activities that we provide to help get them more active and healthier.” She added: “As well as providing these activities the Council is also working with the NHS to provide continued health

provision on the Moorgreen Hospital site to meet the growing needs of our community.” Tackling mental health issues in partnership with local volunteer dementia champions is helping to raise awareness of everyday issues faced by people living with the condition. They are improving communication about local services and are encouraging local shops and businesses to become more aware of dementia so that those living with the condition can have more confidence when shopping. Parents and children are enjoying healthy eating

courses in local primary schools to increase awareness of menu planning and healthy eating, food safety and hygiene, learning new cooking techniques and skills and trying new foods. For more information visit www.eastleigh.gov.uk/ healthyliving
