Welcome to the lastest edition of the Hawkinge & Elham Valley Handbook; and firstly, thank you all so much for your feedback and enthusiasm recieved recently.

It’s been quite overwhelming, and lovely to know that the handbook is both useful and enjoyed.

We’ve got a great edition for you this Spring; including some great local artwork by a company named White One Sugar, who kindly provided our front cover this edition. Hopefully we’ll also have some lovely spring sunshine to enjoy while you’re reading!

Folkestone has the F-Factor... do you?

Grab your songbook and guitar - the F-Factor is coming to town! Budding musicians no longer need to travel far and wide to showcase their talents as Googies Art Cafe will be hosting a singer-songwriter competition starting this April.

Despite the name, the competition is more Fame Academy than X-Factor, and will feature many of the region’s most promising original artists over the course of six bi-monthly heats. The final of the competition will take place at Googies on June 28th with the winners not only having the opportunity to record their own 7” vinyl single but also to go on tour as the very special guests of the Preservation Society record label!

The competition is open to all ages and aims to showcase music across the entire spectrum.

Performances at Googies will be “unplugged” with no drums although bands may put forward their existing material for entry provided it is original.

The winning artist/band may record their single and do the tour performances with full instrumentation.

The six performers at each of the six heats will face a judging panel made up of industry professionals.

They will perform three songs each - of which at least one must be their original work - with the panel deciding which three artists face the public vote. The winners will then be chosen by the audience and will go into the grand final.

The competition is being organised by new local music promoters Hanging Man Promotions, whose mission is to bring the best in new alternative music to Folkestone, in conjunction with Googies Arts Café and the Preservation Society.

Nick Clout from Hanging Man told us: “The inspiration to put on F-Factor came from an intense passion and belief in local music which we know that Googies shares in abundance. With the backing of the Preservation Society we now have an amazing prize worthy of the local talent”.

The Card Shed is now standing on it’s own two feet and selling cards online as well as through a number of independent retailers in Kent. They have a stylish website that is easy to navigate and new designs are added almost every week so there is always something new to look at.

One of Natures Little Helpers

Many people know Chamomile aids relaxation. Chamomile tea is commonplace now on supermarket shelves. Whilst chamomile does indeed have calming, relaxing and gentle sedative properties it is so much more.

Chamomile has immune stimulating properties, is anti-inflammatory and anti allergic useful in combination with other herbs for both strengthening the immune system against hayfever. Being a slightly bitter herb it helps calm and regulate digestion.

Herbalists may use chamomile in combination with other herbs in eczema.

Its often associated with the body getting too hot and chamomile helps cool and calm addressing the cause.

Chamomile can also be applied topically to hot, itchy skin conditions.

Because chamomile also helps reduce feelings of nausea it can be useful for pregnant women suffering from morning sickness.

As a Medical Herbalist I often get asked about ideas to help young babies sleep – we have to be so careful what we give our young ones! Chamomile is a lovely gentle herb for children. Try making a strong infusion of organic chamomile then adding to the baby’s bath to relax them before bedtime.

If breastfeeding then drinking plenty of chamomile tea will ensure it comes through the breast milk and help relax baby too. The added

carminative properties may also help with any digestive upsets in baby too. Once children are old enough to drink things other than milk try introducing weak chamomile tea. If started early then most babies will take to the taste of herbs – a bit different to trying to get a fussy five year old to suddenly try! Speaking of digestive upsets in babies, and fussy five year olds do please consult a qualified Medical Herbalist if you need help, its always worth speaking to an expert if you’re not sure.

Spring: The Time Of New Growth And A Seasonal Acupuncture Tune Up Feeling tired and run down physically or emotionally after the winter cold and snow? Still recovering from those niggling ailments such as colds and flu? Acupuncture helps a wide range of physical and emotional conditions from muscle/ back pain to stress and anxiety. But you don’t need to be ill to have acupuncture. A quarterly seasonal tune up using acupuncture can help reduce sickness, boost energy levels and improve overall wellbeing.

Why do I need a seasonal tune up now? When seasons change extra demands are placed on the energy of our bodies and we are more prone to illness or feeling down. Recipe Easter Chocolate Mousse Cake

Serves 8

Ready in 1¼ hours plus 3 - 4 hours chilling Perfect for a special Easter Sunday meal this indulgent dessert has a chocolate sponge base, creamy white chocolate mousse filling and a rich and dark chocolate glaze. It can be prepared the day before or made a couple of weeks in advance and frozen.

Ingredients BASE 3 eggs 70g caster sugar 50g plain flour 2 tbsp cocoa powder MOUSSE 2 x 150g bars good quality white chocolate, broken into pieces 3 tbsp milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 300ml double cream 3 large egg whites 2 tsp powdered gelatine GLAZE 85g plain chocolate 20g unsalted butter 4 tbsp double cream Melted white chocolate and small candy coated chocolate eggs, to decorate

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180C/Gas 4. Grease and line the base of a 20 cm round spring-form tin. To make the base, whisk the eggs and sugar together in a large heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water until very thick and pale – the whisk should leave a trail in the mixture when lifted.

2. Sift over the flour and cocoa and fold in gently. Pour into the prepared tin and bake for 12-15 minutes until just springy to the touch. Turn out and leave to cool completely. Clean the tin and lightly grease and re-line the base. Place the cold sponge in the base of the tin.

3. To make the mousse, place the white chocolate, milk and vanilla extract in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water and leave until melted. Remove from the heat and stir until smooth then stir in 4 tbsp of the cream.

4. Dissolve the gelatine in 2 tbsp hot water. Cool for a few minutes then stir into the chocolate mixture.

Softly whip the rest of the cream and fold into the chocolate mixture. Whisk the egg whites until stiff and fold in. Spoon the mousse over the sponge base and chill for 3-4 hours until set.

5. For the chocolate glaze, melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat, stir until smooth then stir in the cream. Leave until cool and thick enough to spread, stirring occasionally.

6. Remove the mousse cake from the tin and gently spread the chocolate glaze over the top. Drizzle with melted white chocolate and decorate with the chocolate eggs.

1st Folkestone Coastal 10K Race Director Ray Johnson is delighted to announce a new 10 kilometre running event taking place on Sunday 27th May 2012.

This year, 2012, is set to be a great one, not only with the Olympics coming to London, but with our first ever Folkestone Coastal 10k running race!

The race will be held on the last Sunday of May each year and will set off at 10am from the former Rotunda Site on the Folkestone seafront (CT20 1PX).

The 10 kilometre run will head towards Hythe and then return, all whilst taking in the beautiful coastal scenery that the area has to offer. This is a flat promenade route, traffic free and a great race for those who are relatively new to running, but also for those more experienced looking for a good personal best. The event will be supporting local and international charitable causes, and participants are encouraged to run for their chosen charity.

The entry fee is £12.00 affiliated and £14.00 unaffiliated or after the 22nd May and on the day, will be £16.00. It would be appreciated if the event is promoted via friends, enthusiasts and clubs via the local communities.

Ray Johnson, Race Director comments: “This is an exciting new project for Folkestone that will encourage people to come to Shepway, enjoy the facilities with a mainly Seafront run and further assist charitable concerns. The event already has over 30 runners registered and will be limited to 1,000. We are hoping for tremendous support from the crowds, and have already received positive feedback from experienced runners who cannot wait to participate, particularly due to the distance that is within many runners’ reach.

The event is already being supportedby various sponsors, including Independent Insurance Services / Insure Green, Metroline Security and Fullicks Electrical in Cheriton. We are also looking for further sponsorship and prizes, so please get in touch.

This is a new community charity event and so all proceeds will go to charitable causes, including Folkestone Ghurkha Community www.gurkhamemorialfund.org.uk and local Rotary Clubs www.rotary.org. What am I doing for my birthday party this year?

These are the dreaded words that can send even the most organised of mums into a downward spiral of stress. Parties may have changed over the years but one thing remains the same – your child’s expectation that his or her birthday party is THE most important and fun day of the year and should be celebrated accordingly. Add to that the constant reminders of the amazing parties of his / her friends and the accompanying ‘playground peer pressure’ and it is no wonder that many mums feel strained as the impending birthday looms nearer.

Parties of yesteryear The traditional party of years ago for a child that has just started school, would generally comprise a simple trip to the local play centre, with a birthday cake thrown in for good measure. Shared spaces If your office space is shared with your dining room, kitchen, bedroom or living room, you will probably want to conceal it as much as possible when it’s not in use. Build a large cupboard in a recess next to a chimneybreast, for example, and behind the doors you

should be able to squeeze in a desk with some shelving above.

In a kitchen you might consider removing a unit. That said, think carefully about whether the room’s two purposes will conflict – if you need to work with the children running around, or when a partner wants to sleep, it’s going to be a problem. You might be better off converting the loft, or fitting an office under the stairs, on a large landing or even in the garden shed.

Folkestone Rotary Club’s Junior Chef Competition

Eighteen youngsters were kicking up a storm in the kitchens of the Catering Department at K College; they were all taking part in the Folkestone Rotary Junior Chef competition co-sponsored with the local Hotel and Catering Association.

This is the 15th year of the competition and the number of competitors, from 6 local schools, was the highest ever.

The contest was in two parts with the senior (16 – 18 year old) group competing, during the afternoon, in a “Ready, Steady Cook” style contest in which they had a surprise package of ingredients and had to use their creative and culinary skills to come up with an individual dish. There was no lack of flair and the eminent judges, Paul Hagger of Paul’s Restaurant, Ben Walton of The Marquis and Ian Piper of K College, had a tricky task to select the winner.

There were two age groups split along school year group lines. The winner of each age group as: Years 7 – 9 Laura Fairfax, Folkestone Academy, with grilled cutlets of lamb with a minted pea puree and vegetable medley.

Slugs and Snails by Pippa Greenwood

This is the time of year when you’re likely to start to notice the presence of slugs and snails in your garden, greenhouse, coldframe, window box… indeed just about everywhere.

There are many different species; the most common in gardens are probably species of Milax (the keeled slugs) and Arion (e.g. the garden slug and the large black slug), plus the grey field slug (Deroceras reticulatus). The garden snail, Helix aspersa is generally the most troublesome but may also be joined by various species of the banded snail, Cepaea.

It never ceases to amaze me how much damage something as small as a slug can do and in such a short space of time. But then the truth of it is, there is never just one slug or one snail, you can always be sure that there will be hoards of them. I garden on clay and our soil is alkaline and so we have a plentiful supply of snails; if you garden on an acidic soil you will generally find that snails are not a problem as they need the calcium to make their shells.

To say that they infuriate me would be an understatement, but the type I hate most are those small grey-black keeled slugs that do such a lot of damage to

crops such as potatoes. I garden without chemicals so there is no question of using pellets, but I have tried pretty well every other trick in the book. When it comes to potatoes I grow largely earlies and early mains and these crops are less susceptible because they are lifted relatively promptly. It also pays dividends if you grow varieties such as Pentland Dell, Wilja, Charlotte, Estima and Pentland Ivory all of which show a good degree of resistance to these slugs.

I also use the biological control nematode Phasmarhabdites hermaphrodita. True this may prove quite expensive but it works brilliantly against slugs, poses no environmental problems (it is a naturally occurring parasite of British slugs) and is perfect for controlling any slug that spends time underground. If you time the applications so that the crops, flowers or other plants are protected while they are at their most vulnerable, it shouldn’t be too much of an outlay.

Slug and snail traps also work well, whether you buy your own ‘Slug Pubs’ or make them by plunging plastic beakers into the soil close to susceptible plants and then part filling them with beer. I once did a mini trial on Gardeners’ Question Time to see which beers slugs and snails liked best, and Guinness came out tops… with alcohol-free lager proving least popular! I also find that milk (stale works well) is good, and if you add a small quantity of grain or porridge oats to the liquid, the pests come in at an amazing rate. Do make sure that you leave a centimetre or so of the rim of the beaker protruding above the soil level as this will greatly reduce the number of beneficial creatures such as ground beetles

that inadvertently fall in to the traps. Upturned half grapefruit skins or even large cabbage leaves can also be used as traps, but remember to empty or replace these daily or else the slugs and snails will re-enter the garden.

If you create barriers around plants this can help, but I find it less reliable. My preferred materials are coco-shell (the mulching material), pine needles and crushed shells (e.g. oyster shell sold by poultry feed suppliers). But whatever you use do remember to put it in a complete circle around the base of the plant, not just a ring or the slugs may simply come up inside the ring and of course check it regularly, replenishing the material as necessary.

So before they start to really get a hold, show them who is boss, and take action straight away: • Encourage wildlife such as ground beetles, birds and hedgehogs as these may help to keep numbers down.

• Create barriers around particularly susceptible plants.

• Buy or make slug traps.

• If growing potatoes concentrate on earlies and lift these as soon as possible.

• Grow varieties of potato that show some resistance to attack.

• Use the biological control as a soil drench to control slugs (not snails) • Attach copper strip around the circumference of pots containing slug susceptible plants.

• Go on night-time slug and snail hunts.

• In late autumn collect up snails from their hibernating places.
