That’s the debate raging in Mount Albert as a group of residents are fighting tooth and nail to stop a traffic light from being built at the intersection of Centre Street and Mount Albert Road. T The residents think the traffic light will make the road less safe which is at odds with York Region’s assessment. So far 294 people have signed a petition to stop the light from being built. "The residential streets will become busier with people trying to bypass the light," Jeff Mackey said. "Consider the fact that there is a school at the bottom of the hill and cars may be sliding backward toward that school, or you will get people running the red light so that they don’t risk sliding down the hill. Just not a good idea at all," Lindsey Wensink said. "I can’t believe that they’d even consider lights at the top of such a hill. Unbelievable way to create a safety issue rath-
er than resolve one," Dan Morris said. "They did not confer with any residents. It was complete shock for everybody," Cathy Morton said. "Crazy idea for lights. Winter will be a nightmare. People will get hurt," Kim Hughes said. Whether those concerns will have any impact on York Region seems like a long-shot. York Region Manager of Corridor Control and Safety Nelson Costa said the region is still planning to install a light at the intersection this fall. "A consultant was retained to review the intersection and the recommendation to address the poor sight distance and pedestrian safety was to install a traffic control signal," he said. Costa said the eastwest signal on Mount Albert Road will remain green until activated by a pedestrian or motorist turning left. The signal will also provide a protect-
ed phase for pedestrians crossing Mount Albert Road, he said. Other intersection improvements include new curbs on all quadrants, new pavement and markings to current pedestrian crossing standards and the intersection will be illuminated. Mount Albert Road is a regional road so any traffic decisions are ultimately made by the region. Mayor Virginia Hackson said the town forwarded concerns about that particular intersection to the region in 2015. "For us it’s all about safety of residents," Hackson said. "We have received a number of complaints and concerns specifically in relationship to the school and Centre Street." Hackson said the regional traffic study and traffic engineers have recommended a traffic light as a means to make the intersection safer and said they are the experts on the matter.

Mom furious after bus driver suspected of impaired driving JEREMY GRIMALDI jgrimaldi@yrmg.com "Carnage, absolute devastation" is the first thing to enter Dawn Chaykowsky’s mind when she thinks about what might have been had the driver of her son’s school bus not been charged before doing some serious damage. "Just imagine the scene if they’d hit a Mack truck," said the 50-year-old mother of two. "It would have been like someone put those kids through a blender. A head-on collision with no seatbelts. They would have been pulverized." Chaykowsky says she is extremely blunt because she has intimate knowledge of the impact a drunk driving collision can have on human beings. It was in 2001 that her mother and sister were struck by a three-time offending drunk driver - resulting in her mother’s death at age 56. Luckily for the 20 students on the bus, their families and thousands of others associated to Markham’s Bill Crothers Secondary School students, the driver was pulled from the vehicle after just a minor fender bender. Police said there was booze just inches from her person. It was on Aug. 29 that Keswick Grade 11 student Mitchell Chaykowsky, 16, boarded the bus. A kick-boxing specialty

The incident also hits close to home as Dawn’s mother was killed by a drunk driver. student at Crothers, an athletics-based high school, Mitchell had been attending school since Aug. 8. For the three weeks leading up to the start of the school year, when his regular driver would take back the wheel, Mitchell and his fellow students were in the care of a female bus driver. It was your everyday morning until the driver mounted the curb twice on her way to school. "I thought that was weird, but figured everyone makes mistakes," Mitchell told yorkregion.com.

It was on the trip home when the students would see something they’d never experienced before, an accused drunk driver in action. "Right away when we’re in the bus, about to go onto the road from the parking lot, she’s driving half on the sidewalk," he said. By the time they reached the intersection of Warden Avenue and Enterprise Boulevard., Mitchell felt the bus brake hard, causing many students to brace themselves. The bus had rear-ended a vehicle stopped at a red light in front of it. "She reversed and
marbles in her mouth. That’s when I thought to myself ’Wait, she’s on something.’ She had 20 kids’ lives in her hands. Why she would do something like that?" When Dawn, a sales representative with York Region Media Group, got the call from Mitchell she was beside herself with anger, but also experienced an overwhelming sense of relief that no one was hurt on this day. "I know the carnage that could have happened," she said. "People don’t realize that when you go to the morgue to identify someone in cases like this,

seemed to try and leave the scene, and then rear-ended the vehicle again," he added. "She didn’t ask if we were OK, we were all asking her questions, but she didn’t reply. We all got on our phones asking our moms to pick us up, but when I asked if we could leave she told us ’no.’" When York Regional Police arrived, Mitchell says he witnessed three open packs of gum near the bus driver. "She told the officer she only hit the car once, but I was behind her shaking my head, ’No,’" he added. "When she was speaking it was as though she had

Dawn believes society has become lackadaisical to the results of drunk driving, especially considering the numbers of motorists charged in York Region continues to rise. "We have all learned to live with (drunk driving), everyone just hopes it won’t happen to them," she added. "But I can’t even tell you about the void that it leaves in your life when it does, I have so many people around me that care about me, but I am still lonely without (my mother)," she explained. "It’s the most gut-wrenching thing, it’s a dark and lonely experience to lose someone like that. I wouldn’t wish on anyone." At this moment Dawn will say she’s just glad a tragedy was averted, but there will be another. "I am just happy my son is safe," Dawn said. "What will happen to the bus driver? Who knows, a slap on the wrist probably. What are the answers? I don’t know." A 54-year-old woman from Georgina has been charged with refusing a breathalyzer and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. The York Region District School Board said it takes "stringent measures" to vet drivers and promised to look into measures used to hire this driver. Stock Transportation said the bus driver was fired following the incident.

Due to the formwork required for pouring new sidewalk bays, any replacements that take place in front of an asphalt driveway will require asphalt patches on both sides of the sidewalk. If sidewalk replacement is required across your entire driveway, the work will be completed in phases to allow vehicles access. Sidewalk bays that require replacement will be marked with orange paint before work begins. Although all efforts are made to ensure on-site paint markings are accurate, locations may be added or removed as necessary.

Hiking HST for cities a bad idea, but what’s better? Meet Kathleen Wynne, tax fighter. Even the Ontario premier’s staunchest allies will agree that’s not a description that is often applied to Wynne. And yet, you can thank her for saying an abrupt ’no’ to a request from the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) which would have seen the harmonized sales tax (HST) go up by one per cent in order to fund municipal infrastructure improvements such as roads, sewers and arenas. No doubt this is not what Wynne had in mind when she told municipalities to work together on developing new sources of revenue to make a dent in municipal infrastructure gaps. Increasing the HST from 13 to 14 per cent is not among the options she is prepared to consider. Not with an election around the corner and polls showing the Liberals are inching back into contention with the Progressive Conservatives. A bad idea motivated by good reasons is still a bad idea. Increasing the HST is not something any of the major political parties are willing to consider. Especially not the Liberals who have been criticized for previous tax increases, and especially not with a hotly contested provincial election just around the corner. But here’s the thing: While this idea was doomed from the start, the problem it was intended to address is all too real and getting more serious. Municipal officials have been warning for years that towns and cities cannot afford the growing cost of infrastructure maintenance and development. With increasing concern about liability, insurance costs are becoming prohibitive, leading to public facilities in some communities being shuttered. Roads, sewers and bridges across the province are in need of serious upgrades and repairs. This hits smaller communities with small tax bases hard, and only adds to the larger, better-documented burden placed on cities like Toronto. In most communities, the gap between need and available investment is growing incrementally every year. Provincially, it’s pegged at $4.9 billion. How will municipalities keep up? They don’t have the myriad of revenue options the province has. But for most municipalities, the options are few: increasing user fees, reduce services or increase property taxes. None of those is a sustainable strategy. They leave property taxpayers not only in Toronto but across the province with an untenable burden. There is no question. Municipalities need more options. Where are the solutions that are palatable to all involved?

Upon arrival in the emergency room, the doctors and nurses immediately responded to him. My son passed later that day. Our family would like to thank the doctors and the nurses in both the E.R. and the I.C.U. where he was transferred to before passing on. They were so compassionate and caring in my time of devastation. I would also like to thank a stranger who held my hand and tried to comfort me when my son went into cardiac arrest. Celebrate music, food at Magna Hoedown
New school opens its doors in Sharon SIMON MARTIN smartin@yrmg.com Murrell Boulevard has been the site of constant construction this past year but on Tuesday Sept. 5, Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Elementary School opened its new location in the new Sharon subdivision. The new school features a daycare facility, outdoor classroom, soccer field and asphalt play area. In the fall of 1959, Our Lady of Good Counsel opened its doors on Morton Avenue with two classrooms and 61 students. As the population continued to grow in Sharon, the school was expanded to six classrooms in 1965, and in 1981 an addition with five classrooms, a library and a gymnasium was built. This past June the final classes were held at the old school. A special farewell was held and many former students came to say good-

Magna Corral in Aurora is about to get a country makeover. The Magna Hoedown is just around the corner and will bring two days of food, entertainment, and music. It will get an early start Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with the Student Hoedown, an invite-only event for students with disabilities. The doors will officially open at 6:30 p.m. and the lineup will include the Hoedown Showdown Talent Competition finals; a performance from last year’s showdown winner, 16-year-old Mac Shepherd from Georgina; and line dancing. The evening will wrap up with a performance by headliner Chad Brownlee. Sept. 16 will open at 5 p.m. and will kick off with a line dance and performances by the showdown winner. Other performers include Dani Strong, James Barker Band, and headliners Tom Cochrane with Red Rider. The hoedown will also include a Texasstyle barbecue dinner, prospector’s raffle draws with a $100,000 top prize, food trucks,

ESTEREL, PQ: The 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT is a very clever piece of packaging. It looks like a compact CUV for those leaning in that buying direction — as, it seems, everyone in Canada is these days. Yet it’s really a five-door hatchback but not bare bones equipped. For example, even the base model is fitted with standard heated front seats and – get ready – standard leather wrapped heated steering wheel. Even as I pulled into the Elantra GT media launch site in Esterel, PQ, I wondered what all the compact CUVs were doing in the staging area, not the semi fastbacks I was expecting. The Elantra GT has been around for 18 years with the 2018 model kicking off its fourth generation. Always a hatchback, the idea of making it look like a crossover that rides closer to the ground, actually improves its appearance. This is augmented in no small part by a new “cascading” grille treatment with gently rearward tapering roofline and long front hood. Cargo volume is what the GT (Hyundai speak for hatchback) compact car is all about, with 705 litres of space behind the 60/40 split/fold rear seat and 1,560 litres folded. Towing is not recommended. The GT comes in two flavours – the base

Fuel economy numbers for the GT pair are not yet available. But, for comparison, the 1.6-litre turbo in the Elantra Sport sedan is rated at 10.7/7.8/9.4L/100 km city/highway/ combined for the manual and 8.8/7.0/8.1L/100 km with the dual clutch. Pricing was also not announced, but we were told to expect it in the low $20k to low $30K range. Hyundai knows Canadians want content, so included with the standard heated steering wheel/front seats, the base GT will also contain a ton of stuff such as Blind Spot detection with Rear Cross-Traffic alert, projector headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) Side mirror turn indicator, eight-inch display AM/FM/SiriusXM augmented with dynamic guideline s, backup camera and Android Auto and Apple Car-Play. But the knockout feature seen for the first time on the GT and rolling out across Hyundai is BlueLink available on the Sport in which the car is actually a communication device. Using a smartphone, you can start it remotely and set the temperature to cool and/ or heat including the steering wheel and set the idle time too, if you wish. You can locate it by cellphone if you forgot where you are parked and be guided to it, lock or unlock remotely, get drivetrain diagnostics and service notifications. To demonstrate BlueLink, Hyundai had a Sport on a raft floating in the middle of lake in front of the hotel where the media launch was held. From the shore, a Hyundai official unlocked the doors (visible by the yellow outside
mirrors flashing) and turned the car on and off. BlueLink will be offered as a full service feature free for five years from purchase. I did not sample any of the manuals, but I have to say the 2.0-litre really impressed, feeling both solid thanks to the 53 per cent use of high-strength steel and the excellently communicative steering feedback from the front MacPherson strut suspension. But where it shone was up, around down and through the winding two-lane blacktop roads peppered with small delivery trucks. Normally, trying to see around and pass would be a white-knuckle event in situations like this, but the GT was plenty spunky when I needed it to be. Hyundai automatics offer three (Eco, Normal, Sport) drivetrain response modes and I made the most of Sport when passing. Another thing my co-driver and I both noticed was how quiet the 2.0-litre was even when getting out and walking around it at idle during a driver seat change. The Sport with its fancy interior with red trim accent pieces and red seatbelts was even quicker and the handling was improved thanks to the multi-link rear suspension as opposed to the simple torsion twist beam in the 2.0-litre. There is much to commend this vehicle to those who like the idea of getting around in what looks like a crossover but who are looking for included content that doesn’t drive the price into the stratosphere. It’s an intriguing combination that is worth a look when it arrives in Hyundai Canada showrooms.

Do you take a chance and drive to the local hospital emergency room, possibly waiting for hours on end, or take a gamble on another hospital further away? Karen Mulvey lives in Keswick and works in Vaughan. She asked us, through CONNECT, whether the province’s new wait times registry will make it easier to decide where to go for emergency health care. The answer is yes – and no. If you live in York Region, you have three emergency room (ER) options: Newmarket’s Southlake Hospital in the north, Mackenzie Health and Markham Stouffville in the south. If you live in the northernmost parts of the region, Royal Victoria in Barrie may be a fourth option. The province has created a new online tool that provides wait times for these, and 122 other ERs and Urgent Care Centres in Ontario. You can visit ontariowaittimes.com to get an idea
of how long a patient needing immediate, unscheduled health care can expect to spend in an ER. However, that information is not posted in real time (it’s updated on the second last business day of the month), and it can’t tell you the time you will spend in ER on a particular day. Only patients heading to Markham Stouffville Hospital can see estimated emergency wait times in real time, thanks to a tool on the hospital’s website, msh.on.ca Royal Victoria is currently reviewing that technology to see if it would be beneficial for
Barrie, according to Paula Istead, operations director, Emerg e n cy a n d I C U. M a cke n z i e Health will also consider the service, spokesperson Catalina Guran said. Meantime, the best provincewide data says you can expect to wait the longest in the ER in the wee hours of the morning. At Mackenzie Richmond Hill hospital, busiest days for the emergency depar tment are Sundays and Mondays (or Mondays and Tuesday after the long weekends), Guran said. Longest waits are usually around 10 a.m. until noon and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. At Southlake, there is not
one particular day or time that is the busiest, according to the hospital’s strategic communications consultant Kathryn Perrier. It is also difficult to pinpoint the busiest days and times at Royal Victoria, said Dr. Natalie Cousineau, chief of emergency. “We typically see and treat up to 300 patients each day, making us the busiest ED in the region,” she said. “We service a huge geographical area, are situated on a very busy main highway and deal with a large influx of seasonal patients due to our proximity to cottage country.” In general, urban residents tend to wait longer in ER than people living in rural areas, according to a study by Health Quality Ontario. Karen Mulvey thinks there would be value in a real-time clock that would allow residents to compare hospitals and avoid the “brutal” wait times. “What happens now, people get there and wait for hours and leave angry. At least you’d know g o i n g i n a n d m ayb e wo u l d choose not to go, to wait and go to your doctor during business hours instead.”
The answer from Christine Terin, manager of marketing and communications at YRT: YRT Route 320 - Newmarket-Beaver Creek Express was implemented on Sept. 6, 2016 as per York Region Transit’s 2016 annual service plan. This express route connects Newmarket and Aurora with Beaver Creek and Commerce Valley employment areas via Hwy. 404. It operates during weekday rush hours at a frequency of 35 minutes. Ridership has steadily increased from accommodating approximately 26 passengers to approximately 37 passengers daily in the last three months. YRT/Viva monitors new services for a minimum of 12 months of operation to ensure they meet service standards. JULIE ASKED: What has happened to the big fountain, sponsored by the Newmarket Rotary Club, that used to run in Fairy Lake? It hasn’t been on all summer and we miss it. The answer from Jeff Bond, Newmarket parks manager: The fountain was damaged due to the large amounts of rain during the week of June 19, June 22 and June 23. The fountain was eventually carried away by the heavy flow of water. Newmarket staff tried to recover the fountain, but efforts have been discontinued due to safety concerns. A READER ASKED: When is the City of Vaughan going to widen Hwy. 7 between Kipling Avenue and Wigwoss Drive? It is the only stretch of Hwy. 7 that is still two lanes. The answer from Thomas MacPherson, manager of transportation asset management at the Region of York: At this time, there are no immediate plans to widen this section of Hwy. 7. Future rapid transit is identified for this section of Hwy. 7, but there are currently no immediate plans and timelines for the stretch. However, there are other significant transportation projects currently under construction that can help get residents around in the City of Vaughan; this includes the Toronto-York Spadina subway extension and the Hwy. 7 West/Woodbridge vivaNext rapid transit project. walking down the street and see a character. Immediately in my mind, I know there’s somebody that’s going in a book." She does have some tricks for naming characters. "I get names from the back of the telephone book, which is getting thinner," she said. "There are so many interesting last names that you can use as first names." Gloster’s late husband worked for IBM and she said they moved a lot. "We’ve been from one side of Canada to the other and a few of the states," she said. All that moving around inspired the backdrops for many of her stories. A lot of the books are set in places she has lived, including York Region. "I’ve lived in Newmarket a long time," she said, adding an upcoming book will be taking place in Queensville and Mount Albert areas. Gloster has advice for aspiring writers. "Just keep trying. Don’t ever, ever give up. I hope they don’t have to live to be 80 to have it happen." Copies of Gloster’s book can be purchased at greatcanadianauthors.ca.

Shirley Gloster kills people. Well, in her stories, anyway. The 84-year-old Newmarket resident and author writes mysteries and she will be celebrating the launch of her first published novel, Ghosts of the Past and Murder, on Sept. 16 at the Senior’s Meeting Place from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. "It’s exciting. It’s a good story," she said. Gloster said she has been writing all her life, but it was not until her husband died that she decided to look into getting published. "I had all these books in pages here and pages there, and ideas here and ideas there," she said. "After my husband passed away, I started looking at it seriously, thinking, ’You know what, I could put all this writing into novels.’" It took her a few years to get things put together into different stories, but then her work was published with an online publisher. She recently approached Word Alive Press, a book publishing
company in Winnipeg that started to publish her novels into books. "I think I really didn’t think that it was going to happen," she said. "I jumped up and down practically. Of course, I had to phone everyone." Sylvia St. Cyr, publishing consultant at Word Alive Press, said they are currently working on Gloster’s second novel, which will be the first in a series of three, The Sally Cameron Mysteries. "She has been incredible to work with and I know that she will continue to work hard to get these books out to the public," she said. Ghosts of the Past and Murder is about a reporter who receives a tip about a murdered family in the Niagara region, and her family might be involved. She decides to investigate with her best friend and her dog. The story involves romance, crimes and clues. Gloster said she is not sure where she gets her ideas. "They just pop in my head like you wouldn’t believe. I have an amazing imagination and I don’t know where it comes from," she said. "I can be

4 simple tips for a strong start to the school year After summer break it can be hard to transition back into the school routine. As the new school year approaches, it’s helpful to start preparing your child(ren) so that by the time the first day of school arrives, the whole family is feeling prepared. Here is a list of simple tips to make back to school a breeze: 1. Set up a schedule - Ease into your routine over a one to two-week period
to ensure you’re ready for the first day back. You can start by re-introducing a consistent bedtime and practicing morning rituals like eating breakfast together at a regular time. 2. Get organized - Help your child get back into the swing of things by making sure they have a clean and quiet study area. Restock school supplies and set it up together to make it a fun activity that will get them excited
about using the space. 3. Reduce screen time - More free time in the summer often means more time spent in front of a screen, be it TV or tablet. Increased screen time can lead to poor sleeping habits and reduced attention spans, so implement a schedule as you prepare for the school year. A good rule to follow could be no screens in the morning and a set amount of time in the evening. Make
sure screens are off completely an hour before bed. 4. Seek extra support - Everyone learns at their own pace, and some subjects like math and reading may take more time to master than others. Afterschool programs are a great way to help your child foster confidence and strong work-skills. With the help of a trained instructor, they work with your child to set up an individual lesson plan
that aims to build a lifetime of math and reading success.

Notice of Public Community Open House for a Project Proposal for Incremental Regulation Capacity The proponent identified below is proposing to submit a proposal to the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to design, build, and operate a facility for Incremental Regulation Capacity (IRC). The IESO is seeking to expand the breadth of its Regulation market and expand its capacity to schedule Regulation. This will be achieved by increasing the amount of scheduled regulation from 100MW to a range of between 150 to 200MW for each hour, and developing sufficient market breadth to allow it to schedule between 250 to 300MW of Regulated capacity on an as-needed basis by 2020. IRC is a competitive process and is a critical step towards reaching these targets. This notice is to inform the public of a community open house to discuss this specific IRC project. Information regarding the proponent, the Project proposal, and the open house details are described below. This public community open house is being held as part of the early community engagement requirements of the IRC. The IRC Project and its proposed connection will be described at the open house. A long pond shoulders the right side of the fairway to the bunker-guarded green of this tough par-4. PANEL’S PICK: The redesign of the course a couple of years ago altered the View’s finish. The former No. 7, a downhill right dogleg, is a nifty closing hole. Key is to drive into the fairway and avoid a pond waiting to the left of the green. THE PRO’S VIEW: "The property is stunning and the design is so natural," said Kerr. "Both designers used the natural roll and terrain so well.

NOBLETON LAKES (Lakes/View) ASSOCIATE GOLF PRO: Stefan Kerr. STATUS: Public. SIGNATURE HOLE: Seventh hole, Lakes. It is a risk-reward par-5 playing downhill off the tee box. Water guards the front of the green all but for a small landing area to the left side. Given the advantage of a downwind, it is often a reachable green in two very good shots. The View - Island greens just have a way of finding their way into the hearts of golfers. Formerly the leadoff hole on the View, No. 3 is a popular request by guests. The par-3 test plays to 130 yards off the white tees and, of course, is all carry. A sneaky canal to the left and back of the smallish green demand pinpoint control. TROUBLE AWAITS: The Loop references the first three holes of Lakes, a par 5-3-4 combination that sets the tone for the round. "If you can get through the Loop without trouble, there is a good chance you will put up a good score for this nine," said associate golf pro Stefan Kerr, in his sixth season at Nobleton Lakes. Particularly, the third hole is an interesting right dogleg playing to an elevated green with a blind approach shot. The View provides a similar stretch from the second to fourth holes. CURSE OF THE COURSE: On the Lakes, the many false fronts to greens wait to bedevil first-time visitors. Tricky, undulating greens are the View’s calling card. GIMME A LIFE MEMBERSHIP: The contrasting styles of the nines comprising the 27hole facility are a winner. As always, location on Oak Ridges Moraine assures variety and eleva-

It is difficult to get behind the planned celebration for a 50th anniversary season by the Aurora Tigers. First, it is not clear what the Tigers are actually celebrating. The party line, after months of questioning owner Jim Thomson, is a celebration of 50 years of Aurora Tigers hockey at the Jr. B and A levels. It is a designation requiring mentally ramming a square peg into a round hole to make it fit with a desire to have a celebration season. While the Tigers have planned an elaborate marking of a milestone on Friday night to kick off the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) season against the defending Royal Bank Cup champion Cobourg Cougars, the math simply does not add up no matter how many times in a day the number 50 is repeated. Research reveals the Tigers’ moniker was first applied to the Jr. C team in Aurora starting in 1962. So linking the name to a golden anniversary is out since that was 55 years ago.

In fact, junior hockey took the 1985-86 season off in Aurora, a barren stretch from which the Eagles emerged. For the record, Aurora had Jr. B teams in the 1950s, including the Bears which reached the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA) Jr. B final in 1959 only to lose four games and tie another in a seven-game series against Sarnia. As a side note, an Aurora entry - nickname unknown - lost two games to one in the 1938 OHA Jr. B final against Orangeville. The next season Aurora took down Milton, 3-1 in

games. One thing hockey fans can count on for Friday’s home opener (7:30 p.m.) at the Aurora Community Centre is a clash between the only two OJHL franchises to win Royal Bank Cup titles. The Cougars won earlier this year as the host entry despite bowing out of the playoffs early. Aurora, of course, won RBC titles in 2004 and 2007. The 2004 squad has strong claim as the best team ever to play at the Canadian Junior Hockey League level. In fact, the rules regarding player eligibility were changed after that season to limit the number of 20-year-old players permitted on a roster. That is worth celebrating. * Football six-pack It appears the York Region Athletic Association (YRAA) senior/varsity football league will operate its 2017 season with six teams, a loss of one school from last season. After a one-year stint in YRAA, Villanova College is opting out for this season. The league was scheduled to hold its annual preseason scheduling meeting Sept. 13. *Homey touch It isn’t quite a home
away from home, but the Newmarket Hurricanes have created a playerfriendly retreat inside the Ray Twinney Complex.
