Residents react to Saturday night shooting in ’calm’ neighbourhood. JEREMY GRIMALDI jgrimaldi@yrmg.com York Regional Police charged a Newmarket man with the murder of Georgina’s Cody Gionet. Gionet was found on Oct. 21 at 10 p.m. with gunshot wounds on Sheldon Avenue, in a neighbourhood northeast of Yonge Street and Davis Drive in Newmarket. Gionet died of his injuries in hospital. Another man was arrested on "unrelated charges", police said. Both men were arrested at a house near the scene, according to police. Robert Curtis, who identified himself as a friend of Gionet, told CTV News Toronto the victim was a nice guy. "Sometimes he had to go make some money the way he could, but to be honest, he was a really good guy," he said. Another man named Tyler Biladeau said he Gionet a "really nice guy" that "didn’t do anything wrong". Travis Whitman, 21, is charged with second-degree murder. Whitman appeared in bail court in Newmarket Oct. 23. Residents of the Newmarket neighbourhood were coming to grips with the fatal shooting on their street only hours earlier. "It’s so sad. I thought this was a great neighbourhood and all of a sudden we’re hearing shots," said Cecilia Ribadeneira, nodding toward the scene, as she left for church. A resident of her home only since August, Ribadeneira ventured upon the scene while returning from a night out at the movies. "I saw a body on the side-

16-year-old girl. He will make his next court appearance Oct. 27. The alleged assault was one of many incidents in a lifelong struggle with mental health challenges for the woman, who is looking at a career in social work after she finishes getting her high school diploma. The former Richmond Hill resident entered the mental health system at age seven when she showed signs of hyperactivity, repetitive movement disorder and obsessive characteristics. Initially misdiagnosed, she was later determined to have autism spectrum disorder and complex posttraumatic stress disorder, as a result of being repeatedly sexually and physically assaulted at the age of five by a nine-year-old neighbourhood boy, while two older girls watched and mocked her. Intermittently, over a
period of years, she has had contact with many mental health professionals and agencies. "The issue with these programs, they have a cookie-cutter approach. You can only stay in the program for a certain amount of time and once that time is over, they just discharge you. But everybody is not ready to be discharged at that time," she said, adding there are also often long waiting lists for programs. "I have been on waiting lists for so long that I have aged out of those waiting lists." She began going to Southlake as she experienced suicidal thoughts and attempted suicide several times. "I have severe impulse issues. I think and then I do and then I regret right after. It’s never really a planned-out thing, like, ’I’m going to kill myself today.’ It’s always ’I’m upset, I’m frustrated, I don’t know what to do with my emotions right now,’" she said. "When I was 17, I hung myself in the closet and woke up (after being) unconscious on the ground because the bar snapped .... I’ve also overdosed on (psychiatric drug) lithium a couple of times." The woman said her treatment at Southlake has

A few weeks ago, as an in-patient, she said a nurse told her to "stop acting bad, get some hobbies and go on (dating and hook-up app) Tinder." "The get hobbies part I don’t mind, but stop acting bad? I’m not purposely trying to be bad and I don’t see
me as a bad person. And go on Tinder? That’s a little random," she said. The woman said she has been restrained twice while at Southlake, including one incident when she was "tackled" by security guards and injected with a sedative when she wouldn’t move away from a door on the mental health floor and staff feared she would flee. She said she has had some good experiences at Southlake, pointing to a caring doctor who treated her in the youth unit when she was younger. However, she wants to see Southlake provide more training to employees dealing with patients with mental health concerns and review its procedures for restraining and injecting patients with sedatives. Southlake provided a written statement in response to the woman’s concerns. "When people come to the hospital, we want them to feel heard and we want them to share their concerns with us, so that we can resolve any issues with them as soon as possible. We would really encourage this young woman to come forward and contact York Regional Police to report this, so that she has a voice to tell her story" it said.

Work toward 2018 East Gwillimbury budget underway It’s that time year again, where we reflect on the current year and begin planning for 2018. The public process of the 2018 business plan and budget kicked off on Oct. 17 with a preliminary budget presentation that provided a background on the operating (day to day costs) and capital (one-time special projects) budgets and also outlined the two main drivers and cost pressures for the budget. The two drivers proposed by staff for the 2018 budget are to maintain core services and programs with a budget increase aligned with inflation and to continue the town’s multi-year focus on enhancing community safety to provide 24/7 emergency coverage. As we begin the budget deliberation process, council will be looking for opportunities to save and mitigate pressures such as increased operating costs, specifically
VIRGINIA HACKSON Mayor’s Column for waste collection as the previous 10-year contract has now expired and the cost of winter maintenance due to an increase in contractual costs and winter events. Despite various pressures each year, council has ensured that any tax increases for base line services have been kept at or below the rate of inflation throughout this term of council. We understand that everyone faces pressures, just as we do at the town. Our goal is to continue to provide quality yet affordable services and,
although debt may be required at some point, the town is proud to have maintained a debt-free status for the past six years. Town staff has focused on maximizing non-tax revenues by conducting ongoing reviews of development-related fees to ensure growth pays for growth and to build much needed infrastructure in the town. For example, the new Health and Active Living Plaza, which is projected to be covered entirely by development fees, and the Queensville Fire Station, which was re-built in 2015 and financed 100 per cent by development charges. The public process for the budget will continue Oct. 31 in council chambers. vices. Things are still very much in the preliminary stages as council hasn’t had a chance to sit down with the budget book and look at the numbers. When the town made a transition to a full-time fire service during 2014 budget deliberations, council knew the move was going to represent a significant budget increase.
Before 2014, the town had six full-time firefighters. They hired an additional six in 2014, two in 2015 and 2016 and one in 2017. The town plans to hire an additional firefighter in each of the next three years to reach a total of 20 by 2020. The proposed operating budget is $24.9 million According to Valcic’s report, 84 per cent of the operating budget is funded
through taxes, with the remaining 16 per cent coming from various user fees, fines and reserve transfers. Council will spend much of the next two months in budget deliberation. Good riddance to employee discount tax idea Hopefully, by now, employees in Canada’s retail sector - or what remains of it, at least - can breathe a little easier knowing the Canada Revenue Agency isn’t poised to take aim at the discounts they receive from their employers. Such incentives, which range from the meagre - a small percentage off the retail price of a given item, for example - to the generous - such as being able to buy merchandise at the employer’s cost - are commonplace in the customer service industry and serve as something of an enticement for would-be employees in a sector where a great many of the front-line staff members are paid minimum wage. Given that, it seemed the CRA was effectively talking about flipping retail workers upside down and shaking them by the ankles until their loose change fell out. The controversy began earlier this month when a 2016 update to CRA documents, stating that employees who receive a discount on the price of merchandise owing to their employment should have the value of said discount included in their income, was thrust in the spotlight via a Globe and Mail story. The policy went on to say the value of the benefit should be calculated as the difference between the retail price of the item less the amount the employee paid. No amount would be included in the event the same discount was offered to members of the public in some manner. Business groups, some of whom had decried the notion when it first came up but whose objections largely went unnoticed, argued it would be a nightmare to track their employees’ discounts, while other stakeholders voiced concern that employment incentives could be scrapped altogether by companies simply to avoid the aggravation. Despite a Liberal MP initially suggesting that any employee discount not offered to the public at some point would be fair game under the new rules, the federal government quickly distanced itself from the policy, expressing "disappointment" in CRA bureaucrats, and prompted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to tweet assurances to retail workers that their discounts weren’t in the crosshairs. The government, in consultation with industry stakeholders, will now go back and review the policy and craft a new response to the 2011 court ruling that triggered the update in the first place. In any case, after the PR mess, it’s safe to say the idea of taxing retail employee discounts won’t soon be resurrected, and that’s a good thing. It was a wrong-headed idea that unfairly targeted workers in a sector primarily comprised of people at the lower end of the income spectrum.

• LETTERS & COMMENTARY • Greater understanding of special needs needed Re: Class struggle, Oct. 5. I just saw your great article in the paper. I am a special-needs parent and someone who is helping out in the school. From reading your article and what I have seen, it is a combination where the teachers don’t understand the special needs and lack of support in the school system. The school day can be very overwhelming for our kids. At times, these behaviours are a way for the kids to communicate that they are overwhelmed. I believe the system misses that point at times. With there being inadequate supports in the schools, our kids are not
taught good coping skills to deal with how they feel. I am troubled when I see teachers ask for protective gear. I agree with Clegg that isn’t necessary. That would only create a bad feeling among our kids. Basically, in order to fix, there needs to be more understanding of special needs and why behaviour comes about, as well as much better supports. My own thoughts would be, how long has it been since a parent, {spanking a child, lovingly of course, to teach right from wrong when needed} was considered the right thing to do by the majority of the population? And what year was spanking a child considered harmful and first addressed in our modern courts? And what has resulted in society since then? But those are my thoughts. How/when will it end? I do not believe an answer will occur in our lifetime. But the problem will definitely grow until a solution is developed. But eventually it will happen. Especially if the government one day decides they have to raise the children, rather than their parents, in order

Under the technology designation EQ Power, the latest electric model (destined for subsequent series production) is set to combine innovative fuel cell and battery technology. As a plug-in hybrid, in addition to hydrogen, the all- electric variant of the popular SUV will also run on electricity. Intelligent interplay between battery and fuel cell, along with short refueling times, will in future make the GLC F-Cell a vehicle of high everyday practicality and also suitable for longdistance motoring.

With 4.4 kg of hydrogen on board, the preproduction model produces enough energy for a range of up to a possible 437 km in the NEDC.

antees both dynamic performance and locally zero emissions driving pleasure. In unveiling the preproduction vehicles of the Mercedes-Benz GLC F-CELL, Daimler is taking another important step as part of its systematic “CASE” strategy. Fuel-cell technology is a firm element of Daimler’s powertrain strategy. Under the EQ product brand, the company is pooling its know-how related to intelligent electric mobility while offering a comprehensive e-mobility ecosystem of products, services, technologies and innovations. Between now and 2022, Daimler intends to bring out ten battery-electric vehicles, globally, with the GLC F-Cell representing an important landmark.

Ingrown toenails can often be caused by tight footwear, injury to the nail, or over curvature of the nail. When the nail grows into the skin, it can cause swelling, infection and pain. While medications can calm down the symptoms, often the toe cannot heal without proper treatment. The skin that was punctured cannot heal when the offending part of the nail is obstructing the healing process, so often removal of part of the nail may be needed. It is best to consult with a chiropodist (foot specialist) regarding the appropriate treatment options as each case can vary. While sometimes carpet seams can be “invisible”, you cannot guarantee this. The installer is taking two or more pieces of carpet and putting them together. Long, loose piled carpets such as shags are actually easier to disguise seams than on a short, tightly constructed carpet. Carpet seams should be cut straight, leaving as many carpet tufts in the seam area as possible. The seam edges should be sealed to prevent delamination, then seamed flat using a good quality hot melt seam tape. Once the seam has cooled, the carpet installation can continue. Paranormal investigator Lynda Quirino from the Georgina Paranormal Society says there are ghosts and spirits haunting various parts of York Region, some she and her
team have witnessed. We gathered a list of five sites in York Region that are allegedly haunted and here they are: Sharon Temple (East Gwillimbury) The Sharon Temple was built in 1832 and is a designated National Historic Site of Canada. Though it’s not technically haunted, people have reported hear-
ing sounds of a large feast being prepared, music and footsteps. Quirino calls a "residual" haunting, imprinted in the character of the building. "It was a large gathering place, a lot of things happened there," she said. "It’s an energetic imprint." Eaton Hall (King) The house once belonged to Lady Eaton, wife
of department store magnate John Craig Eaton, and it is believed that she still roams the grounds with other ghosts. It was built in 1938 and Quirino has had her own strange encounters there. "It had a really charged atmosphere," she said. "I knocked on the door of a little room, and someone said ’Hey!’ but no one was in the house with me." Heintzman House (Thornhill) Built around 1817, it’s one of the oldest homes in the Greater Toronto Area. The owners of the pub are seeking to organize ghost tours after employees and visitors reported seeing and hearing things, Quirino said. An elderly man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle shortly before 8:30 a.m. Oct. 25 in Newmarket, York Regional Police say. Officers were called to the Bristol Road and Doris Crescent area at 8:22 a.m. for reports that a pedestrian, believed to be in his 70s, was hit, Const. Andy Pattenden said. Football’s future does not bode well for Huron Heights Any time. Any place. Any team. That is, approximately, the rallying cry for the Huron Heights Warriors football program. Trouble is, getting finding takers to their standing offer to play ball is no easy task. In the ongoing quest to create an enhanced schedule, the Warriors serve notice they are always open for business on a football field. Heck, team members even wear T-shirts bearing words to that effect. The York Region Athletic Association (YRAA) regular season schedule and playoff amounts to six games. That’s plenty for some programs in the six-team league, but barely half what the Warriors desire. Huron Heights will play in the YRAA final for the 14th straight season and, most likely, an Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations series bowl game. To enhance their play time is one thing; finding in-season rivals is no simple task. As the rest of YRAA leans toward a six-versussix format alternative, perhaps as early as the 2018 season, the Warriors are actively looking to explore new avenues for their program which in many respects has outgrown its current league. Finding a league in which to participate is the ideal scenario. Easier said

The other option is to compile an independent schedule and try to put together a reasonable slate of games by playing teams on bye weeks or also looking to complement their schedules. Neither option carries a guarantee. Both fall in the iffy category. The appetite some may have for creating a super league, or joining another, brings with it a series of issues ranging from potential eligibility reforms to costs to feasibility. Admirable for its ballsy creativity, an independent slate of games is no way to go through a football season, uncertain from week to week if games will be played. In fact, with league commitments foremost to most school teams, it is easy to schedule but later ditch inseason exhibition games, which don’t offer points. The Warriors, who are regarded currently as a top 10 public school team in Canada, have learned this the hard way since three
potential opponents reversed on commitments already this season. In-season opponents may balance playing a top team such as Huron Heights against the best interests of its team in league standings. Avoiding injury is much simpler if a bye week is used for purposes other than playing a game. Sidestepping bruised egos is equally convenient. "We are perceived as being very strong, and lights out," said Warriors head coach Al Rover in a recent conversation. "But we’re not. Some guys are so worried about their rankings. "It’s frustrating. It’s easy to (cancel) when it’s not a league game." Whatever happened to lining up and just playing football to see who is best? The best answer, and most stable option, is to have a league in which to play. But where? Who is going to be willing to take on an outsider? Can Huron Heights even gain permission to leave YRAA for another league? There exist many hurdles to overcome. Despite the hard work that has made the Warriors’ program one to be admired for its structure, organization and support, the future is by no means certain. It’s sad to ponder the options.

McMULLAN, Robert Michael December 13, 1954 - October 20, 2017 It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Mike McMullan in the early morning hours of October 20, 2017 at the age of 62. Beloved husband to Evelyn, big brother to Erin (Paul), cherished father to Spencer (Brianne) and Cameron, special Grandpa to Brock and Holly, stepfather to Parise, and uncle to Cody. Predeceased by his parents Robert and Eleanor McMullan, both of Belfast, Northern Ireland. Mike grew up travelling the country in a military family and loved the outdoors, classic cars, airshows, bagpipes, rescue animals, and Christmas traditions. He was happiest working with his hands, and showering his two young grandkids with toys and affection. Mike will surely be missed, and will always live on in our hearts as a true gentleman.
