York Regional Police Sgt. Aaron Sidenberg calls in another sighting as media joined police in action as they nabbed distracted drivers while peering out the windows of public transit buses. Police also unveiled signs, to be featured on select buses in York Region, meant to remind drivers they are being watched.

Police on a bus: ’Put down that phone’ KIM ZARZOUR kzarzour@yrmg.com Ever feel like you’re being watched? You should, because you are.

York Regional Police wants you to know that officers have their eyes on you when you’re on the road - and even when you think you can’t be seen, they see. That little trick you do, when

you tap at your cellphone between your knees, below the steering wheel? They’re onto you. Hiding the phone under your thigh?

They’re onto that, too, and you can thank public transit buses, towering above your car in the next lane, for revealing your secret. l See YORK, page 4

Rental market is ’dog eats dog,’ car accident victim finds LISA QUEEN lqueen@yrmg.com Car accident victim Michael Graziano has learned the hard way how the soaring real estate market is hurting tenants. As he limps with a cane past packed boxes to join his wife Terri at the dining room table of their rented Aurora home, Graziano said it’s not only prospective homebuyers being squeezed by skyrocketing prices. Following a two-month search after learning they had to find a new place to live, the couple have finally found a rental unit, although they are less than thrilled with the state of it. They are moving into the three-bedroom upper level of a house at $1,550 a month this month even though they had paid rent until the end of April at their current home. Graziano, the drummer with the locally renowned Sean Bourke Band, was seriously injured in February 2013 when his van was hit head-on by another vehicle on Hwy. 9 near Schomberg. After being rescued with the

Accident victim Michael Graziano and his wife, Terri, pack up their belongings as they prepare to move. Jaws of Life, the then-Newmarket resident was transported to hospital in Orangeville before being airlifted to St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto in critical condition. Now 61, Graziano suffered numerous injuries, including a broken hip, shattered elbow, broken legs and ankle, dislocated shoulder and separated knee cap. Graziano, who continues to

play in a pub band a couple of times a month, still faces multiple surgeries. "It took my whole life away from me," said the Canada Post letter carrier, who hasn’t returned to work. He receives monthly federal government disability benefits of $1,174 while 56-year-old Terri, a social service worker who has

chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, also receives a monthly federal government disability cheque for $570. They have also received a lump sum disability payment last May from Graziano’s work benefits, although the monthly payments were terminated in September 2015, as well as an advance from his lawyer in anticipation of a lawsuit. Although they are able to pay their current rent of $1,510 plus utilities, choosy landlords in this market would rather rent to an employed tenant with a paycheque, the Grazianos said. "(The search) was horrible since the beginning of February because it didn’t matter how much money we had in the bank, people couldn’t trust that we were able to pay the rent," Terri said. "They saw (the disability benefits) as too much of a risk. About 15 times, we were turned down, sometimes before we even got to the place, because we shared what our situation was. You can’t go in there lying. Nowadays, they want a credit check, they want to see your bank statements, they want pay stubs, they want references."

The couple offered one landlord three months’ rent in addition to first and last months’ rent but were still turned down, in one case to tenants who paid a year’s rent in advance. "That’s how bad it is," Graziano said, adding they searched for an apartment in Aurora, Newmarket, Keswick and Bradford before finding one in Aurora. "It’s really dog eat dog." There was no point in looking in the south part of the region because rents are too expensive, he said. Lee Webb, a lawyer specializing in housing issues at the Richmond Hill-based Community Legal Clinic of York Region, which provides legal information and advice on rental housing and other issues, said the housing crunch is difficult not only on low-income earners but middle-income residents as well. "There is a rental housing crisis in York Region and this is driven both by a lack of tenancies or lack of rental apartments and also by the high cost of housing," he said. l See RENTAL, page 4

Town’s population set to increase by 51 per cent by 2020 SIMON MARTIN smartin@yrmg.com Take a step outside East Gwillimbury Civic Centre this spring and it’s as if you entered a high school percussion practice. The cacophony of hammers and construction equipment is a sign that East Gwillimbury’s population is about to boom. How much you ask? If the town’s numbers are correct East Gwillimbury’s population could grow by 51 per cent over the next four years. Director of Planning Nick Pileggi said the town has already added an estimated 1,000 people since the York Durham Sewage System extension became

operational last fall. Pileggi told council at special meeting on growth management April 11 that so far there has been 253 new home occupancies but those numbers grow almost daily. There has already been 2,352 permits issued for new construction with a total 7,000 total units available to the town as part of the YDSS extension. Town staff broke down the numbers of where the growth was happening in town. The Queensville Properties development has 75 occupancies to go with 429 registered permits. The Minto Queen’s Landing development has 42 occupancies with 212 registered permits.

The Sharon West development has 136 occupancies with 1,065 registered permits. The South Sharon development is in the process of registering 240 permits. Holland Landing East is in the process of registering 193 permits. Holland Landing West has 213 permits to issue. Pileggi said occupancies are expected to be robust in 2017 and trickle in 2018 on the Phase 1 projects. There are a lot more houses coming though. Queensville Phase 2 has 597 registered units. Sharon West Phase 2 has 225 registered units. Holland Landing l See EG, page 2

UPCOMING PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE Green Lane Secondary Plan May 2 from 6 to 8 p.m. Presentation at 6:10 p.m. Civic Centre, 19000 Leslie St. Sharon The Town of East Gwillimbury is undertaking a Secondary Plan process to create the detailed planning framework and identify land uses for the future development of the Green Lane Corridor from west of Yonge Street, to Leslie Street. In January 2017, the public had an opportunity to provide input on land use concepts, urban design principles, and sustainability principles. Input from that session has been considered in the development of Preliminary Land Use Concepts and supporting reports. A second Public Open House will be held to provide an opportunity for residents and interested stakeholders to provide input on the Preliminary Land Use Concepts before Council considers a recommendation from the project team. The meeting will include a short presentation at 6:10 p.m. with the remaining time dedicated to a workshop where participants can provide comments and seek clarification from the project team. Written submissions and inquiries on this matter should be directed to Robin Prentice at rprentice@eastgwillimbury.ca. Susie Kockerscheidt/Metroland

Maxine and son Daniel Strom, who has Aspergers, has been invited to be keynote speaker at prestigious conference in Atlanta, where he’ll be talking about what it’s like to have autism.

REBRANDING AUTISM Man with a microphone, mission bike, was socially awkward, clumsy, disorganized - and the worst part: these "problems" were what people used to identify him, rather than the many other things he did well. At 10, he was diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome and he and his family began the agonizing process of ensuring he got the supports he needed at school. He had been tapping into his love for the microphone at local weddings and funerals, but now Daniel had a mission - he would use his "stage presence" to explain what it meant to have Aspergers. It started at Keswick High School where he created a power point to share his insight with teachers and principals. Over the next 13 years, his mission mushroomed as he was invited to speak at bigger venues throughout Ontario - at colleges, universities, disabilities organizations. He spoke to Southlake hospital’s mental health professionals, to

KIM ZARZOUR kzarzour@yrmg.com Daniel Share-Strom was just three when it became clear what his mission in life would be - and that the mission would involve a microphone. He had always been a different child, not really interested in other kids, in toys, in communicating with others. But one day he and his mom were at garage sale and Daniel made a beeline for the toy box. He grabbed a microphone, stood in the middle of the driveway and began belting out "Blue Suede Shoes". It happened again at a family friend’s concert, when one of the musicians invited those in the audience to perform, and quiet little Daniel leaped on stage. Things at home weren’t so stellar, though. Daniel was a smart kid, but the things he did made him look dumb. He hated loud noises, couldn’t ride a

volunteers at 310-Cope (York Region’s community crisis response), and in 2016, he gave a TedTalk at York University. It was the latter that got him noticed south of the border and this week, he has been invited to take his show on the road in Atlan-

glasses they call "autism goggles" to show why the world needs to see autism differently. It is time, they say, to rebrand autism spectrum disorders, in the same way marketing has made waves on the issue of mental illness.

’People are languishing in parents’ basements when they could be doing so much for the world.’ ta, where he will be keynote speaker at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Autism Awareness Month Event, April 20. He is following in big footsteps: previous speakers include world-famous autism advocates Dr. Temple Grandin and actor Ed Asner who has a son with autism and two grandsons on the spectrum. Daniel and his mother, Maxine Share, recently moved to Bradford and they often speak at events together, wearing funny

Aspergers is a neurobiological disorder on the higher-functioning end of the autism spectrum and can impact everything from social and organizational skills, to physical activity, language and emotions. Daniel may hate toothbrushes, loud noises and washing his hair - but this is not all he wants us to know about him. Unfortunately, if you are autistic, he says, you are identified by the things that are "wrong". "We are judged by our distance from so-called nor-

mal and by the list of things that have to be fixed," he says. Because autism impacts how one communicates, learns and interacts, the list of things to be "fixed" can be long - and as a result, people with autism grow up feeling broken, he says. "People tend cringe or at very least have preconceived notions of what autism is - someone who can’t be taught, who’s going to be a problem, who might be at best like Rain Man or Sheldon from Big Bang theory." In fact a surprising number of successful people fall on the autism spectrum, and he believes it’s time for them to "come out of the closet". Those who speak out about depression are helping destigmatize depression and the same approach can help those with autism, he says. Leaving the status quo, he says, is deadly. Maxine, who acts as administrative assistant to

Daniel and helps him write his speeches, agrees. "What we’re doing now is killing people," she says. "This system is not working." Those with autism have nine times the suicide rate, she says, they die years earlier than the average person and have 80 per cent unemployment even though they often test very highly and are often extremely skilled in one area. "People are languishing in parents’ basements when they could be doing so much for the world," adds Daniel. Better teacher training, curriculum that can beadjusted to reflect the pace of those on the spectrum, a publiceducation campaign featuring those on the spectrum and encouragement foremployers to hire people with autism can all lead to change, he says. "Autism is not a defect or a mental illness, and it is not a catastrophe. It is simply another way of experiencing the world."

York Regional Police take to transit York police’s new campaign "We’re on board; are you?" was launched this week with a unique "bus ride-along". Media was invited to tag along April 13 aboard one of their newly-"wrapped" buses displaying the image of a YRP officer leaning out the window, writing a ticket. It’s a not-so-subtle reminder that police are peering down at you from York Region buses and if you want to avoid a hefty fine, you best put down that phone. convertible - and laughing to see how many drivers scrambled to hide the phones beneath their legs when they realized they were caught. One driver caught with his phone was nabbed for much more: three-times-suspended license, no insurance, on probation and not allowed to drive his car. A total of five drivers were nabbed in the short trip. Earlier that day, police caught 16 distracted drivers between Yonge and Mulock and Steeles, including one using a full-sized iPad, Sidenberg said. Buses provide the perfect high vantage point, he said, especially for peering into pickup trucks and cube vans. "Our message is: put it down," said Slade. "There is nothing that important that can’t wait until you get to your destination."

ten eager to help police by looking for offenders from their own bus seats and sharing with the police officer on board. It didn’t take long for the reporters, photographers and camera operators to get into the spirit of things during Friday’s ridealong. As the bus travelled south on Yonge Street to Highway 7, Sgt. Aaron Sidenberg immediately spotted two drivers surreptitiously tapping on their phones. He communicated the info via radio to nearby unmarked police vehicles and within minutes, those drivers were facing $490 fines and three lost demerit points. Soon, the ride-along media were joining in, peering into cars ("like an Easter egg hunt for adults", someone joked), pointing out other offenders - a female in a white Cherokee, a man in a beige

launched the campaign this week to fight distracted driving. The offence - use of cellphones in particular - remains a significant safety concern for drivers and pedestrians, according to traffic bureau Insp. Randy Slade. Since January, the YRP has been riding public transit to watch for drivers using their cellphones or other hand-held devices, then relaying the information to officers patrolling the roadways. Now they’ve added the "bus wraps", depicting a police officer leaning out of the bus window, on five transit vehicles travelling throughout the region. The campaign is two-pronged: while drivers are nabbed for using their devices, bus passengers see first-hand just how dangerous the roads can be for them as pedestrians. Those same passengers are of-

Rental housing crisis spans region l Continued from page 1

Although there are rent controls on units built before 1991 under the provincial Residential Tenancies Act, landlords can hike rents on apartments that came on the market after that. Former premier Mike Harris brought in the policy in 1996 in an attempt to encourage developers to build rental housing stock, although critics complain the endeavour has failed. Meanwhile, there are 13,000 households on the waiting list for subsidized housing in York Region, with a wait time of between 11 and 17 years depending on the type of unit required.

often find they can “get by” without help, however as the problem worsens this becomes increasingly harder to do. By studying those people having difficulty in noise or with television, we hope to identify key factors impacting these difficulties and further understand their influence on the treatment process.

For some people this loss of clarity is only a problem at noisy restaurants or in the car, but for others it makes listening a struggle throughout the entire day.

Deep inside our ears are several thousand microscopic “hair cells.” These cells are arranged in rows and each cell is responsible for hearing a specific pitch, similar to the keys on a piano. As we age, some of these cells become damaged… from loud noises, chronic conditions, or the process of aging itself. Just like a piano with damaged keys, an ear with damaged hair cells will make things sound muffled and distorted.

2. National Institutes of Health. (2010).

It is estimated that 46% of people aged 45 to 87 have some degree of hearing loss,1 but most do not seek treatment right away. In fact, the average person with hearing loss will wait ten years before seeking help.2 This is because at the beginning stages of hearing loss people

BUSINESS

Zucca’s Ristorante is a secret worth sharing Family operation serves up big portions of old-school Italian food SIMON MARTIN smartin@yrmg.com The most exciting restaurants are the ones you never knew existed. If you have driven the Hwy. 48 cottage route corridor between Mount Albert and Georgina, chances are you have driven past Zucca’s Ristorante and Pizzeria. There’s also a very good chance you have never stopped in. Located at Vlahos Trailer Park in East Gwillimbury, Zucca’s looks like a run-of-the-mill restaurant from the outside. The sign on the building facing Hwy. 48 simply reads family restaurant. But one step inside and a bite of their food, and you feel like running out to the road and waving cars in like a third-base coach so they can also be let in on the secret. That is, if you can still run after the meal.

On a Wednesday morning, Sebastian and Pietro Zucca are busily preparing an order for Mount Albert Public School. The fatherand-son team is stacking containers of fresh pasta, sandwiches and salad for the student lunches. This is how it’s been since 1980, when Pietro opened Piccolo Italia in Newmarket. Sebastian grew up in the restaurant and has done every job over the years. "At 11, I started dishwashing. Then I started making sandwiches," he said. "I do enjoy it. I can’t see myself doing anything else." The key to good food is making things fresh. Mornings at Zucca’s begin with making fresh tomato sauce and meat sauce. Everything goes from there, Sebastian said. The operation is still very much a family affair. Sebastian’s parents Pietro and Giuseppina are heavily involved, as well as his brother Alex who performs the majority of chef duties. That family atmosphere is what they wanted to bring to Zucca’s when they opened it at the trailer park three years ago. Sebastian said customers are usually surprised when they find the place because it had been closed

for so long before they moved in. He was a little skeptical about the location when they opened, but he said people have a way of finding good food. Everybody has their favourite items when they come in, whether it be the veal sandwich, the penne a la vodka or the pizza. "We do big portions. It’s old school Italian food," Sebastian said. They also have wine and craft beer from Lake Wilcox Brewery and Beau’s on tap. One of Zucca’s specialties that attracts customers from far and wide is their football size panzerottis. The Yorkshire Panzo is stuffed with heaps of roast beef, mozzarella cheese, mushrooms and gravy. It might be four meals in one and definitely should not be consumed if you are on some sort of diet. "Sometimes, we get low on takeout containers," Sebastian laughed. Most people can only eat about half of the panzo, he said, but there are a select few that can finish the whole thing. "There is one guy who came in here and ordered a double Yorkshire panzo. He ate the whole thing. That’s impressive," Sebastian said.

New homes coming to East Gwillimbury also means new businesses. Haptic Health and Chiropractic, and Lamppost Counselling Services held their official opening earlier this month at their new location on 18977 Leslie Street across the street from the Sharon Temple. Chiropractor Judith McCann, and marriage and family counsellors Hannah Olsen and Alysha Amirault are sharing the quarters above the Invisible Fence company of the GTA. Both businesses worked with the Starter Company Program at York Small Business Enterprise Centre (YSBEC) to help get their businesses off the ground. McCann, a native of Holland Landing, had been located in Newmarket at the plaza at Mulock Drive and Bayview Avenue but said she saw a lot of potential in the East Gwillimbury area because it is growing so much. McCann knew Olsen from going to high school with her at Dr. J.M. Denison Secondary School. They felt it was a natural fit to work in close quarters. Olsen said starting a business at young age is challenge so it was nice to have a little help from the YSBEC. "It was very helpful learning how to set up a business plan and having someone to talk you through the process. Time for local elections to embrace technology The Internet has become an increasingly large presence in our lives. More and more, it’s the means through which we communicate, gather information, enjoy entertainment and even do business. Despite all of that, however, few opportunities exist for citizens to take part in the democratic process electronically. Markham has offered Internet voting during the advanced polling period since 2003, while Ajax introduced electronic voting for the 2014 municipal election. Earlier this month, Newmarket council voted to become the first municipality in York Region to move to a fully electronic voting model for the 2018 election that will allow citizens to cast their vote online or over the telephone instead of the traditional paper ballot method. Residents will still be able to attend a voting location in-person, if they wish, on certain dates and times. Just this week, Bradford West Gwillimbury council voted to eliminate paper ballots and replace them with Internet and telephone voting for next year’s municipal election. The town’s deputy clerk, Tara Reynolds, described electronic voting as a win-win for its convenience, low cost and potential to boost turnout, while also noting that physical electronic polling stations would also be set up for those needing assistance or who simply prefer to get out and vote. At the same time, the City of Vaughan recently considered the idea of electronic voting only to stick with optical scan tabulators to count ballots for the 2018 election. Staff will report back in 2020 on security and implementation measures in time for the 2022 election, but the decision runs headlong against the winds of change. Privacy and security concerns cropped up among Bradford councillors, but Reynolds noted that additional layers of security, beyond a PIN number and birth date entry, could be implemented. Most of us already do our banking online and many of us file our taxes electronically as well, so allowing citizens to cast their ballots via the Internet makes a lot of sense and numerous ways exist to ensure the integrity of the process. Politicians always seem to lament voter turnout figures following an election and electronic voting is an inexpensive way to make it easier for people to participate, especially in areas where geography can pose difficulties reaching a polling station. Every municipality should be working toward implementing electronic voting ideally in time for the 2018 campaign. It’s time for local democracy to enter the 21st century.

A round-up of reaction online The story: Man jumps to death in IBM Canada’s atrium, injuring co-worker I have called 310-COPE before and it was not a successful, comforting phone call. I was even more upset when I hung up. There needs to be a much more diligent process to hiring call takers for 310-COPE. People lives depend on it. I have noticed an issue with local 911 call takers as well. Some talk very rude and they’re supposed to be understanding that if someone is in crisis, it’s hard to stop yelling and talking fast. It’s hard to be calm when you’re in a scary situation. They shouldn’t have that job if they can speak to people during crisis Christine Patterson

The story: ’It’s a gas game,’ says Newmarket motorist of huge overnight price hike Oh, I love the price increase. Please take some more money from me. I am not content with (over)paying for Hydro, or my household heating and please bring road tolls and especially I look forward to even more increase to the cost of food and water. It’s most excellent that gas was automatically increased by $0.04 cents as of Jan 2017 because of Cap and Trade and I am ecstatic at this $0.06 jump as of last night. Yaay!!! Brian Sankarsingh

Sick of hearing about this nonsense. Homes are one of people’s greatest investments. You people perpetuating this, won’t be happy until people’s investments plummet and they lose everything. Then you’ll be on board when the government claims that CPP contributions must be raised to 25% after you’ve written about these people’s horrific loss of retirement income and how they can’t afford to live past 65. Give developers something real to complain about Re: Governments need to address the GTA’s housing supply crunch, April 6. Bryan Tuckey from BILD is certainly right that there is an affordable housing crisis in the GTA. What he does not mention is that high prices and low supply are a result of developers building more profitable smaller units, and holding onto and not developing over a hundred thousand units that are approved and serviced (124K in Toronto and Oakville alone). While developers might prefer huge taxpayer subsidies to service and rezone protected lands for sprawl, so that they can flip those lands at a tidy profit, this is clearly not in the public interest, as it has huge taxpayer and environmental cost. If developers continue to make these nonsense claims about land supply, and to withhold the supply of affordable housing, municipalities and the province should expropriate approved lands and build the units themselves or in joint ventures with nonprofit developers. This would allow suitable, affordable units for families and seniors to be built quickly. Laura Bowman East Gwillimbury

Real crisis government’s ignorance of problems Re: Housing market in ’crisis’, builders president warns, April 6. There is indeed a crisis in the GTA, but it is not a housing market crisis. The crisis is government that is blind and deaf to the very problems that it creates. There is plenty of housing in the GTA. The problem is there are too many people. As the article states, there are 100,000 people coming to the GTA every year. Are these people migrating here from other parts of Canada? No, these are new Canadians who come to this country under the policies of the federal government. While the GTA suffers with growing congestion, loss of green space and farmland, traffic jams, inadequate transit, and soaring rents and house prices, the federal government not only maintains the current immigration rates, but under Trudeau has arbitrarily increased it by 55,000 to 305,000 a year. Did Mr. Trudeau consult with the mayors of the GTA as to the effect this might

• LETTERS • l MORE ONLINE Read all our published letters at yorkregion.com have on all of the problems they are dealing with? Did the GTA mayors approach Mr. Trudeau and explain the effect the federal government policies will have on their municipalities? If they did, I missed it. The only thing I hear the GTA mayors ever say is that they need more money. When you have a growing population that presumably contributes to a growing tax base, but you need even more revenue than that provides, you have essentially defined a pyramid scheme. This so-called crisis could be ended next week, but no politician has the guts (or brains, it seems) to realize that the real problem is an addiction to never-ending growth and no regard to the negative effects that it brings. Mike Murphy Newmarket

Why would town need more councillors? Re: East Gwillimbury should add 2 councillors for 2018 election: town staff, March 7. East Gwillimbury has a mayor plus four councillors. This for a population of about 20,000, i.e. 5000 per councillor. Newmarket has a mayor and seven wards/councillors for a population of 80 000-plus, i.e. 11,400-plus per ward. So even if population doubled, we would have more councillors per capita than Newmarket. So, I cannot see why they would need more, today or in a distant future. Perhaps the councillors each could display on the town website and in the ERA Banner a typical working week with all the details, so we get a better understanding of what they do for the taxpayers. The town’s U.S.-based website (Active LLC) will not reach each family as it has only has 525 visitors per day, i.e. about 15,000 visitors per month. We do not need more councillors. We need better information from the ones already selected. Leif Holmvall Sharon

Thank you, Julie. You’re an angel. On the night of April 6, during the snowstorm, you stopped at an accident scene on the York-Durham Road just south of Regional Road 8. My daughter, sonin-law and two grandsons had just been in a serious accident and you were first on the scene. You stopped and kindly took my daughter and grandsons into your car, giving them comfort and a warm dry place to sit. I can’t tell you how much we appreciate your kindness. I live close by so I arrived next, and then the first responders. While their vehicle was a writeoff, they were all fine, with the exception of a few seatbelt bruises. We are thankful for that. In hindsight, though, I wish I had written down your phone number, but I didn’t. I hope you see this note. We just want to say a heartfelt "thank-you" and God bless you for this act of kindness. from my own household). With another full week to go until next pickup, I wonder what I’m supposed to do with my own recyclables? The collectors will not pick it up in a biodegradable blue recycling bag or a bin with a lid on it (we’ve tried both). There has to be a better alternative to everyone loosely overstuffing their blue bins, only to have the contents go flying across the neighbourhood week after week. It’s unfair to those residents who do "pack and stack" their bins properly to have to clean up after everyone else, and it makes the streets of this beautiful town look pretty shabby. That being said, when the bins are packed too tightly, the collectors will often dump only a portion of the contents, leaving the remainder inside the bin (or strewn across the road). Since moving here four years ago, I can honestly say there are very few things that were better about living in Toronto. But having a recycling bin with a lid was one of them. It shouldn’t be too much to ask that residents prepare their bins for the Canadian outdoors (duh!), or that collectors take an extra second (literally) to ensure the stuff in the bin actually makes it into the truck. The Ticket takes first prize in story contest TERESA LATCHFORD tlatchford@yrmg.com When inspiration strikes, write. Richmond Hill’s Nayeon Kim did just that when she submitted a written piece to the seventh annual short story contest organized by the Canadian Federation of University of Women in partnership with the York Region Media Group. She was named this year’s winner by celebrity judge Jennifer Dance, a Stouffville author. "I was absolutely thrilled and pleasantly surprised when I received the call. "I was definitely not expecting such a positive outcome my first time around," the Queens University student said. "Sharing my writing with others is such a special experience for me, and I’m grateful I had this chance to do so." Her short story, The Ticket, is fictional but the inspiration came from her family as well as their immigrant background. The protagonist, Mia, is a reflection of Kim and her desire to give back to her parents what they have given for her. "Reading the opening line ’it was time for a change,’ made me think of

The Ticket By Nayeon Kim It was time for a change. Frankly, it had been for quite a while, but today - today would be different. And as a streak of warm sunlight dances its way through a tear in the old bedsheet thrown up against the window, Mia feels in her bones that change is finally here. She often hears the soft, lilting cadence of her mother’s voice first. Every day begins the same, but mornings are always her favourite; mornings are Mother’s sad, pretty songs and Father’s smiling eyes as he pours himself a bowl of cereal. She sits down at her usual place, and holds her breath for

the inner child in everyone that always wants more and better for our parents," she said. "When I thought about how much change mine have taken on in order to give my sister and I the life that we have here, I knew I had the foundation for my story." Kim recalls being a reader before writer. With her mother’s encouragement, her passion for putting words on paper grew. With first place comes a $400 cash prize, which she intends to use to take her family out for dinner as a thank-you for their unwavering support. Taking second place is Emily Carr Secondary School’s Julia Teti with her story The Crossroads of Change, and in third Bayview Secondary School’s Jacqueline Ragosnig with her story Trial by Fire.

The remaining finalists include: Colin Fan, Soldier, St. Robert CHS Kishif Fatima, Like the Faces of the Moon, Father Michael McGivney CA Carolynn Hess, For You Annie Lau, Project FEAR, Milliken Mills HS Daniela Marie Ruso, Your Star is Forever, York University Karen Silva, The Immigrant, York University Bamdad Tayyari, Future Free, Bayview SS

a brief, trembling moment as she lets her surroundings wash over her in a wave of nostalgia for what is to come. The kitchen had always felt so bright, so full of this family and the life they had made for themselves here. Mia almost feels mournful to know that it would all change. Then, something bright catches in the light and draws her eyes: the sparkling diamond ring that sits comfortably on her mother’s finger. There is the low hum of mild conversation filling the room, but Mia cannot hear it; she is fixated on the ring. Long, graceful extensions of a soft and small palm. Her mother’s hands are just as the rest of her is, gentle and feminine. It is easy to forget something as sure and unwavering as her mother’s

beauty, but with the ring shining so boldly on her finger, Mia wonders how it had ever escaped her. She tells herself she will never forget it again. With a kiss to her parents’ cheeks, she heads out toward the town. There is a purposeful bounce to her step, because she knows exactly where she is going. And for the first time in a long time, her chest is full of something with wings. Something that is both light and heavy, brightly burning and threatening to consume her whole. She welcomes the foreign presence with open arms; she has never tasted anything sweeter. Things will be different. She asks for one ticket, please, and presents the

It is this moment that their family will look back upon for years to come. This is where their new life begins. But the store clerk looks down at her from behind the counter and shakes his head, the lines of his face softening in grown-up sympathy that strikes Mia like a whip across the face. Today is the day that her father with his warm, coffee eyes no longer bows his head down to an angry supervisor who reminds him that he is not indispensable. For her mother who sings in the morning to forget how she goes unappreciated in this new country, for her father whose sharp mind and unmatched wit is wasted on physical labour which bends his back and sours his bones five years is not an option. How is it even possible to make him see all of this? So she doesn’t try. When she arrives back home, Mia finds her mother in the kitchen, stirring a pot of stew with a ladle. There is no ring on her finger. There never was.

The event includes onehour sessions for boys from 4 to 5 p.m. followed by an hour for girls. Several universities, located mainly in Ontario, have confirmed attendance for the event. JOHN CUDMORE jcudmore@yrmg.com High school rugby players are getting a boost. Teenage athletes hoping to prolong their playing careers into post-secondary schools will get an opportunity to display their skills during a high-school player showcase for Canadian university and college coaches April 30 at the Aurora Sports Dome. "Connecting prospective student athletes with varsity coaches is our goal for the showcase," said Sandy Townsend, director of rugby development for Advantage Rugby which is hosting the inaugural event. "We want kids to understand the development opportunities that

pectations are at the next level. It’s an opportunity to put everyone in the same room. "Hopefully we can create a little awareness and show kids what they have to do over the summer to be prepared for the next level." The chance for post-secondary schools to observe talent under one roof is appealing. "This is a great idea," said Graham Brown, former CEO of Rugby Canada and current president and CEO of U Sports. "Opportunities like this give student athletes the visibility, appreciation and reward they deserve." Based in Aurora, Advantage has been developing youth rugby players in York Region since 2012.

"The U Sports, OUA and OCAA are great development pathways for future national level talent," said Advantage founder, Ryan Stickle. "We want to identify student-athletes who are capable of playing at that level

and get them into programs to best assist their progress. "Many people are familiar with the term, combine, from other sports and we are trying to do the same here with our Showcase. We

know that a full-ride scholarship for rugby is not possible in Canada but many colleges and universities do have smaller financial awards available and we think kids in York Region are as good as any around the province." Every college and university with rugby programs in Ontario has been invited to attend. "The response has been amazing," said Townsend. OHL’s new draft offers hope for overlooked talent The Forgotten Ones are getting a shot. That is apparently the goal of the Ontario Hockey League’s under-18 draft, a new round of shopping that gives players overlooked in their minor midget draft year a mulligan. Long overdue. Many hockey folks maintain it is not a sprint but a marathon to make it in the sport. Yet, routinely, players are rushed through the hockey rat race, readyor-not. The drafting of minor midgets by the OHL and 18year-olds to the National Hockey League are blatant examples of the haste to get on to the next level. Even the NHL whispers about pushing the draft back to 19

years. The focus on youth lends itself to errors in what amounts more to a crapshoot than precise science. Many players simply are not prepared for the jump to the next level. Perhaps it is nowhere more evident than the jump from minor hockey to the OHL. Beyond the obvious few, how on Earth can a scout accurately assess a 15-year-old kid’s potential? There are various reasons a young player does not hear his name called on his initial draft day. A season marred by injury, perhaps. A late bloomer’s true talent may not emerge for another year or two. Those are just two suspects of significance that can conspire

JOHN CUDMORE Cuddy Shark to keep a young player in the undrafted category. Occasionally, it marks the end of his hockey career. A second look afforded by the OHL’s new draft venture for often neglected triple-A midget players is what Aurora goaltender Pierce Charleson is banking on as much as he tries to push his career in the right

direction. The 17-year-old took the first step when he was a second-round - 21st overall - pick in the inaugural U-18 draft last week, selected by the Barrie Colts. In all, teams sifted through four rounds, plus goalies, of 1999 and 2000born players toiling in minor hockey’s no-man’s land, aka midget hockey. "It was a pleasant surprise halfway through the year when they mentioned this draft," Charleson, a sixfoot, two-inch prospect said earlier this week after playing last season for the Barrie Colts midget triple-A team. "I like the idea of giving players a second chance. "I knew Barrie was interested, but wasn’t sure if they would take me that early. It was nice when it (the Colts) showed up on my phone." Since teams are permit-

ted four selections, plus one goalie, the process injects nearly 100 new players into the OHL’s potential pool of talent. From a player’s perspective, the under-18 draft is an opportunity to prove themselves after an additional season or two of development. It can be a deflating experience to not be chosen among the 300 or so age peers selected annually by OHL teams. "I was a little upset at first," recalled the Grade 11 student at Dr. G.W. Williams Secondary School after being overlooked in the 2016 midget priority draft while many of his York Simcoe Express teammates were chosen. "I thought I would go somewhere, even if it was later. "I know a couple of guys who hung up their skates. There are players who give

up, figuring they are wasting their time." It is a new hockey life for those late bloomers discarded too soon. If there were a perfect mould for player development a draft would not be required in the first place. Woodbridge resident Anthony Cirelli is one such player overlooked in his draft season. After walking on with the Oshawa Generals a couple of seasons ago, Cirelli went on to win a Memorial Cup, play in the world junior championships for Canada and now is with the Erie Otters. Oh yeah, he is also a Tampa Bay Lightning drafted prospect. The question becomes, do teams want a player at 16 who won’t play much, versus a 17 or 18-year-old who has been playing and developing in the meantime?

Hardcore players devote double-digit hours each week to honing their skills and techniques, competing in real-time, online contests against opponents from around the world. JOHN CUDMORE jcudmore@yrmg.com Tim Glenn is getting prepared to tee off against the best in the world. Instead of a bag of golf clubs over his shoulder, however, the Queensville resident will face the challenge of top golf video gamers when the Golden Tee World Championships are held May 19 to 21 at the Hi Scores Bar Arcade in Las Vegas. In doing so, Glenn will be combining two of his passions - golf and video games - as he competes against the best players in the world. Glenn is among a field of 64 semifinalists competing

made the cut," said the 44year-old Glenn, who hones his game at the Canadozer Golden Tee Lounge in Newmarket. "I’ve played golf since I was a kid up at the Briars in Jackson’s Point. I’ve also played video games for as long as I can remember. "I’m definitely a better video golfer than real golfer. If I was near the top in real golf I’d be making a lot of money." Micras take Manhattan

FIRST DRIVE

Rob Beintema

Metroland Media NEW YORK, NY: “Hey! Where can I get one of those?” a guy in a pickup yelled out. We were stuck in traffic, surrounded and overshadowed by trucks and SUVs on a New York highway into Manhattan. “You can’t,” I yelled back, and then explained why, doing so as politely as possible, in true Canadian fashion. Although the Micra is a truly global product, selling in 160 countries, it is available only to Canadians in North America, where it fits in well with our more frugal tendencies and our easier acceptance of smaller, hatchback vehicles. Americans? Not so much, with their mercurial tastes tending to bob up and down with fuel prices, currently ranging between (US) $2.00-$3.00/gal across the country. On a recent drive to Cleveland, the math on a fill-up translated to a paltry (CDN) $0.69 per litre. Which, I guess, explains why Nissan’s marketing poobahs passed over any mild American interest in this subcompact. But, just for fun, Nissan Canada kicked off attendance of Canadian automotive journalists at the 2017 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) with a day-long parade around the Big Apple in Canadian Micras, under the program moniker - “Manhattan under a MICRAscope”. In keeping with our “think small” theme, we visited New York’s smallest museum, a min-

iature Statue of Liberty and took pictures of the Micra in front of the city’s smallest house (ninefeet, six-inches wide). Micra prices range from $9,988$17,188, and we rotated through varying models of “the cheapest car in Canada”, from the starting S MT trim with crank handle windows to bulk-selling, air conditioned, mid-level SL models and further pimped-out, sportier SR versions. While not exactly thumbing our

noses at the Yanks, threading our way through the backstreets was a pretty good demonstration of why these small, nimble, easy-to-park and affordable subcompacts are so well suited for the cut-andthrust of downtown driving. Under the hood, a 1.6-litre fourbanger makes 109 hp and 107 lb/ ft of torque, not a rating to put you in a swoon, but the little car has a decent power-to-weight ratio. The engine feels surprisingly

peppy, utilizing Continuously Variable Timing Control (CVTC) and dual fuel injection with smaller nozzles that produce a 57 per cent finer spray than single nozzle injectors. Fuel econ is rated at a thrifty 8.6/6.6L/100km (city/hwy), through a base five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic (about $1,000 extra, more in the S model because of included goodies - A/C, etc). The Forte name, finding its roots in music, French and fencing, denotes strength, which seems fitting for a vehicle series within the important-to-Canada compact segment. Tested here we have the Kia Forte5, a five-door hatchback slotted neatly between the Forte fourdoor sedan and the two-door Forte Koup. The Forte5 lineup ranges in price from around $20-$30K and offers two engine choices, new technologies and numerous trim tweaks for the 2017 model year. The Forte5 has been fortified (if I can make that play on words) with a mid-cycle refresh that has emboldened its design. Following the styling lead of the latest-gen Optima, the Forte5’s new tiger-nose grille is wider and stronger, connecting with the edges of redesigned headlight assemblies that sweep sleekly around the front fenders. The standard fog lamps have been revised. The character lines are crisper and more pronounced, the profile is sleek, and new taillights balance the edgier Eurodesign in back. The Forte5 lineup starts with a 2.0-litre direct injection four-cylinder engine with DOHC architecture and dual-cam variable valve timing (D-CVVT), contributing to 164 hp and 151 lb/ft of torque. Although this powertrain starts off being mated to a six-speed manual in the base LX+MT model, the bulk of the lineup, from LX to EX, comes with a new second-generation sixspeed automatic. Ah, but now for something just a little bit different. Our tester, a top-of-the-line SX model ($29,895), comes loaded to the gills with equipment and extras. Forte5 a hot hatch that lives up to its name Continued from W1 content, so even the lowest LX trim level model comes complete with electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, hill assist control, auto headlights, foglamps, A/C, keyless entry, heated front seats, a standard rearview camera and sixspeaker audio system. And, as you rise through the trim levels, an impressive list of leather appointments and other extras get added. So, by the time you get to the all-inclusive levels of this SX model, the inventory list features all the goodies added by the graduated trim levels, plus alloy pedals, ventilated front seats and an added integrated navigation system, among other items. This particular SX tester also came dipped in an optional shade of Hyper Blue (+$200), an exclusive colour only available in SX trim. And, mimicking the original hot hatch, there’s a notable, bright red accent line slashing across the front, a la VW GTI, that must have had Vee Dub execs swooning into the arms of their lawyers. Backing all this sport posturing, the SX bumps up the power ante with a 1.6-litre turbocharged T-GDI engine boasting the same DOHC D-CVVT technologies, but to a more muscular tune of 201 hp and 195 lb/ ft of torque. With most of that bottom-end oomph coming on strong at a low 1,500 rpm, the SX launches out of the gate with aplomb and even with a little tire squeal, to satisfy drivers in search of performance to go with their five-door practicality. The SX’s 1.6-litre turbo unit manages just fine, thank you, on regular octane game and its fuel economy is rated at 9.4/7.9/100km

a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that allows cog changes through shifter paddles on a new flat-bottomed D-shaped steering wheel. The SX also incorporates a dual exhaust system, bigger brakes, 18-inch alloy wheels and, to set off the sport motif, a sport bumper and grille up front bracketed by Xenon HID headlights, along with a unique rear spoiler and LED light bar taillights in back. A lane-keep assist system is also added into the mix for 2017. Inside, the Kia Forte5 hosts passengers in a roomy-for-a-compact cabin, with allblack environs, leather-appointed with contrasting piano black glosses and scattered chrome highlights. The instrumentation is a just-right mix of buttons, knobs and touch screen surfaces that allow driver operation without the distractions of menu-scrolling, hunting, pecking and neardeath experiences. Second row accommodation is do-able and the cargo area swallows up to 657 litres of luggage, expanding to 1,597 litres with the second row folded. It’s a very complete package. I could go on and on but, to sum up, with its maximized five-door interior space still blending well with compact nimbleness, and bolstered by an SX bump up in performance and handling, this Forte5 certainly offers Kia customers a hot hatch that lives up to its name.

‘Cheapest car in Canada’ turns heads in NYC into account the way roads are crowned in Canada. Additional front and rear sway bars tighten the ride and the turning circle was reduced to 4.6 metres. Heated mirrors and rear heater ducts were added for Canadian winters. The rear seat was shifted to a 60/40 folding configuration so that, yes, you can fit your hockey bag and sticks in the back of the car. And while many countries start their Micras with base 14-inch wheels, Canadian models offer 15- or 16-inch wheels to accommodate more widely accessible winter tire sizes. All of that content is wrapped up in bodywork that the company bumpf boasts about as “expressive and aerodynamic”, citing the V-grille and other familial styling cues. I’m more inclined to see it as kind of Goby-eyed and goofy-looking up front, slightly Fiat 500-ish in back, but endearing nonetheless with the kind of oddball, ugly duckling appeal that many small cars engender. Nissan Canada was also smart enough to launch the Micra Cup series along with the car. That “most affordable race series in Canada” has gone a long way in shining a spotlight on the Micra’s can-do capabilities and perky persona. And, while we weren’t exactly racing through Manhattan, we certainly created a small stir in our small cars, instigating questions and comments. One final aside - those of you in the know have probably heard about the launch of a new, sleeker, techier Euro subcompact badged as, you guessed it, the Nissan Micra. A 2017 Nissan Micra, posed in a Brooklyn neightbourhood known as Dumbo (Down No, it’s not the same car. Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. Photo Nissan Canada). Much as the global head office guys could do with a sharp rap in the forehead almost pocket-rocket. for confusion created by that boner, the Continued from W1 Those Canadian-tailored enhancements Nissan Canada crew was quick to explain Add in wheels-to-the-corner architecture and a few made-for-Canada enhance- include steering and suspension tweaks that many countries, including Canada, will ments and you have a nimble little, well, based on testing in Quebec, even taking be sticking with the original Micra.

The new upgraded Euro version would be significantly costlier and Nissan is loath to lose its entry-level pricing advantage. You can’t blame them for wanting to stick with a Micra that, as they say, blends Japanese quality, a little European styling and a whole lot of value in Canada. Along with a bit of fun in New York City.

The Micra holds 408 litres of luggage or 820 litres with the second row folded.

Mercedes-AMG trots out New York trio

The all-new full-size SUV combines modern luxury with advanced technology – elevating family travel to first class.

Navigator still big but loaded with innovation and luxury Jock McCleary

Mercedes-AMG staged three premieres at the New York International Auto Show including the 503 hp GLC63 S Coupe.

Metroland Media NEW YORK, NY: The 2018 Lincoln Navigator introduced at the New York Auto Show, is the first major redesign of the luxury fullsized SUV in nearly a decade. It remains as big and imposing as its predecessor but with a new classy and sleek exterior and a much improved luxurious interior. I was surprised at how closely the exterior of the full production model actually resembled the prototype that has been doing the rounds. Obviously the gull-wing doors and extending staircase didn’t make it, but the over all look and design is very similar. The new Navigator displayed at the show came with the same colour scheme and the same wheels as the prototype. As big and impressive as it is, the over all weight has been reduced by 100 kg, primarily due to the new high-strength aluminium body and with the addition of laminated front and side glass reduces exterior noise levels make it the quietest Navigator cabin ever. The Navigator will come with a V6 twin-turbo engine that is estimated to produce 450 hp and is matched to a 10 speed automatic transmission. The interior layout is clean and uncluttered and has been designed

specifically with luxury and ride comfort in mind with Lincoln promoting first class seating for all passengers. Even when it is fully packed, each occupant can sit in comfort. The driver and front-seat passenger enjoy Perfect Position Seats, which offer massage, heating and cooling functionality, and can be adjusted up to 30 different ways. A 12-inch configurable instrument cluster allows drivers to choose the information they want displayed. An available Head-Up Display can show selected information on the windshield instead of the instrument cluster. This helps drivers keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel. Every seat is within easy reach of one of a dozen power outlets

spread throughout the cabin with connectivity for everyone by means of a Wi-Fi hotspot. The Navigator also offers speeddependent adaptive lighting, a new technology that provides a wider spread of light at lower speeds for increased visibility - helpful when driving through residential areas. As the vehicle accelerates, the beam of light narrows to help eliminate the glare off signs or other distractions. The technology offered in this new Navigator is mind boggling, proving that Lincoln is now producing vehicles aimed at younger, tech-savvy customers, but keeping the level of luxury that still appeals to their already discerning customers. The 2018 Lincoln Navigator will be available in Canada in the fall.

Clarity Plug-In Hybrid coming to Canada Rob Beintema Metroland Media NEW YORK, NY - Honda, the company that sold the first hybrid vehicle in North America, unveiled a three vehicle Clarity lineup at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) featuring an all-new Clarity Plug-in Hybrid and a Clarity Electric vehicle and a Clarity Fuel Cell. Each five-passenger Clarity model incorporates a low, wide aerodynamic body and then differentiates the varying versions with unique headlights, tail lamps, wheel designs and styling cues. The 2018 Honda Clarity Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), launching later this winter in Canada, should earn a 68 km EV range, the longest of any PHEV in the intermediate segment. A 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle four-cylinder engine recharges the battery and also acts as

a direct power source for an overall range of more than 530 km on a tank of gas. An electric motor making 181 hp and 232 lb/ft of torque draws power from a 17 kWh battery pack with a recharge time of 2.5 hours at 240 volts. Three selectable program modes - Normal, Econ and Sport - allow drivers to customize and maximize their driving performance. A fourth mode - HV - maintains the battery’s charge in conjunction with the Normal, Econ and Sport modes. The Clarity Plug-in Hybrid is expected to earn an NRCan fuel economy rating of 2.24Le/100km combined, at the top of its class, and will be offered in Standard and Touring trim levels.
