March/April 2025 edition

In honor of March being Developmental Disability Awareness month, Easterseals MORC is pleased to announce Lisa Barger as its 2025 Ability Champion!
Despite having cerebral palsy, Lisa has always maintained the determination and perseverance to never let her disability get in the way of accomplishing her goals. She finished school, pursued a degree, and was happily married to the love of her life, Jerry, for eleven years until he unfortunately passed away in 2003. Lisa currently lives in her own apartment with the assistance of support staff She considers being able to live on her own her greatest accomplishment and she is always advocating for herself to ensure she has the proper supports to continue doing so.
While Lisa has a degree in Information Technology from American Intercontinental University, she quickly found that doing computer work wasn’t really her passion. She realized what she really loves doing is working with people. After her husband died, Lisa was encouraged to become a Peer Mentor, and she completed the training in 2016 Being a Peer Mentor is definitely her calling and she loves spending her time working with other individuals with disabilities to help them navigate the system, express themselves and be heard.
When she’s not working as a Peer Mentor, Lisa enjoys hanging out with her dog, Maggie, having bi-monthly dinner dates at Applebee’s with her good friend, and doing latchwork
Lisa is a prime example of her favorite motto, “With will and determination, you can accomplish anything you want in life.”
March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness month! 'See the Good' brings awareness and education to the unique talents and successes of individuals with special abilities.

March is Women’s History Month. In honor of this month, the Women’s Empowerment Employee Resource Group (WE ERG) would like to recognize important women leaders throughout history. Did you know the inventor of Wi-Fi was a woman?
Hedy Lamarr is known as, “the mother of Wi-Fi" and, the “most beautiful woman in films.” Hedy invented ‘frequency hopping’ in 1942. Her technology was used by the United States Navy during World War 2. Her inventions have led to the development of other wireless communications, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Hedy studied engineering as a young woman in Vienna, before abandoning her studies for a wildly successful career in Hollywood. She famously stated, “the brains of people are more interesting than the looks.”

Every year during the month of March, we promote our "See the Good" campaign in honor of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. To celebrate this, we asked staff to share what "See the Good" means to them. Below are some of the responses!
“Confident, happier person, being positive and not judging others.”
“Turning away from negativity and acknowledging the positive when it happens.”
“Seeing people for who they are and meeting them at that point in their lives...wherever that point may be.”
“Seeing the positives in everyday life and celebrating what individuals can do versus focusing on what they can't.”
“Seeing the good in society is not always an easy thing to do, but is much more apparent when looked at in the individual level. It is the little acts of kindness others share, or the laughter between friends and coworkers. Seeing the good means choosing to remain positive, hopeful, and assuming good intent from others even when there are many bad things trying to ruin that ability.”
“It means doing something kind for others and expecting nothing in return other than the joy it brought you to give.”
“Seeing the good is recognizing the people in the community who need the help and supporting them through the day. To make a difference in their lives.”
“Remembering to see the positive growth in our individuals even when there are challenging aspects such as aggressive or self-injury behaviors”
“Seeing the good means constantly honing the lens through which I view the world—still allowing for recognition of the not-so-good while being mindful not to dwell in that space—and increasing the contrast so that the good blatantly stands out. I think of it as looking through rose-colored, transitions, bi-focals.”

At the start of FY25, our Macomb County locations, Center Line and Clinton Township, became Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHC)!
What are the core services of CCBHC and what does this mean?
Individuals with behavioral health needs will have access to a comprehensive service array regardless of residence or ability to pay!
Services are flexible, coordinated, mobile, and tailored to the person ' s treatment needs.
We focus on an integrated approach, utilizing interdisciplinary teams to address the whole person ' s health.
We offer rapid approaches to care, including Same Day Access, community engagement, and 24/7 crisis response.
Since becoming a CCBHC grantee in Oakland County, we have:
Increased screening for individuals with high-risk conditions like suicide and major depression.
61.2% received a follow-up plan
37.5% of individuals were in remission for major depression
Preventative care for health conditions is key to CCBHC!
52.5% of adults received screening for BMI and received follow-up care to address weight. 92.3% of youth were screened for BMI and 96% received follow-up care.

1. Slow down.
Plan ahead and allow enough time to get the most important things done without having to rush.
2. Sleep well.
Try to get seven to nine hours of sleep each night. To fight insomnia, get regular physical and activity during the day
3. Let worry go.
The world won’t end if a few things fall off your plate. Give yourself a break and just breathe
4. Laugh it up.
Laughter makes us feel good. Don’t be afraid to laugh out loud, even when you’re alone.
5. Get connected.
A daily dose of friendship is great medicine. Make time to call friends or family so you can catch up.
6. Get organized.
Use “to do” lists to help you focus on your most important tasks and take big projects one step at a time.
7. Practice giving back.
Volunteer your time or spend time helping a friend. Helping others helps you.
8. Be active every day.
Exercise can relieve mental and physical tension. Find something you enjoy and stick with it.
9. Give up the bad habits.
Too much alcohol, tobacco or caffeine can increase blood pressure. Cut back or quit to decrease anxiety.
10. Lean into things you can change. Make time to learn a new skill, work toward a goal, or to love and help others.
