roPak Asia is Asia’s largest and most important international food, drink and pharmaceutical processing and packaging technology event. Taking place every year in June, the show connects the world’s leading suppliers to buyers from across Asia and delivers the best and largest range of exhibitors, technology and solutions to the heart of Asia every year.

This coming 24th edition will once again be the biggest-ever show on record.

Presenting over 1,800 exhibitors from 48 countries, and over 4,500 machines from across the world, over 40,000 professional visitors are expected over the four-day show.

4 Tapping Into Southeast Asia

S

outheast Asia is on the radar for many across the world as the place to be, in terms of business prospects. The region, made up of 11 nations, has been pitted as one of the world’s largest and most promising economies of recent years.

Approximately 625 million people reside in the region, and Southeast Asia offers a growing and increasingly attractive middle class population. As of 2012, the number of middle class consumers (people with a disposable income of US$16 to US$100 a day) numbered around 190 million people, according to Nielsen. However, the market researcher estimates this figure to double to 400 million people, by 2020.

The prospects of this exponential increase are vast for investors and businesses of various sectors. With a larger number of people who can afford not only more goods, but are also willing to pay premium prices for things they deem are worthy, manufacturers and professionals of the food and beverage industry can well benefit.

For example, according to a report by Euromonitor, consumers in Vietnam drove up retail sales of frozen processed food, cheese and chocolate confectionery by 24 percent, 15 percent and 13 percent respectively in 2013. This shows the increasing affluence of the middle class consumers to now afford products that were once deemed a ‘luxury’, and their changing tastes and preferences for food products.

In fact, the consumption of premium goods in these markets are expected to increase, and these range from dairy and craft beer and spirits, to red meat and baked goods and confectionery. In addition, Southeast Asian consumers have been observed to enthusiastically embrace other worldly cuisines such as those of the West, as restaurant franchises continue to pop up in these countries and thrive.

Free-Trade Opportunities Southeast Asia is today also seen as the future of food and beverage manufacturing. The versatile markets of the region from Indonesia and Malaysia, to Vietnam and Thailand are vastly different; still, all share an immense potential for growth.

With the enormous population it holds, the region could maintain low costs and produce affordable products if these factors were prioritised. In fact, labour cost in Southeast Asia is relatively lower than other parts of the world; it is no wonder that multi-national companies have already taken advantage of this and have set up manufacturing facilities next to local demand, where they can serve local populations with little worry for otherwise high costs of logistics and distribution.

To further compound the attractiveness of Southeast Asia, two mega free-trade agreements have been signed in the past year, involving some or all of the countries of the region. Namely, these are the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

A Vast Consumer Class

Having come into effect at the end of 2015, the AEC positions ASEAN as a single market, which is estimated to be the seventh largest economy of the world. With an overarching focus to streamline consolidation in terms of manufacturing, the agreement aims to create an economy of scale by centring production in one place to serve the region. This however would likely take decades, and would not be an easy task.

It also aims to eliminate tariffs between ASEAN countries and streamline regulations to promote intratrade as well as to encourage a fragmentation of supply chains across member states, so as to optimise operations and ensure production of best-quality products. For example, labour might be sourced from a cheaper location, but sophisticated skill work might be sourced elsewhere where workers might have the appropriate skill sets or access to the appropriate machines.

The TPP on the other hand, opens some of the Southeast Asian countries such as Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam to the Pacific Rim countries such as Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Peru and US. To date, the deal has yet to be ratified by lawmakers of the countries involved, but in early 2016 the agreement was signed in word by the leaders of the 12 countries—an important first step.

The TPP aims to enhance trade and investment among the partner countries, promote innovation, economic growth and development, and support the creation and retention of jobs. It plans to eliminate an estimated 18,000 tariffs in the long-term to smooth out existing creases and barriers to international trade.

It has not received total positive feedback from industry professionals of some countries as they are apprehensive about all the changes and possible backlash they might receive, but the benefits for Southeast Asian countries still stand. For example, the Vietnam market

is expected to be opened to all players for its agricultural and dairy products, and this would likely benefit the country’s economy on a large scale.

Catering To Southeast Asia It has to be understood that Southeast Asia, although a single region, is made up of different countries which vary vastly in terms of preferences and socio-economic statuses. Products therefore should align to suit the local consumer tastes in order for success.

These can include using popular local ingredients or flavours such as tea, coconut, or rice to create new and exquisite yet familiar products, which would be more popular among consumers than entirely exotic flavours and tastes. Also, manufacturers should keep in mind local religious preferences, such as halal, vegetarian or vegan, if they are to succeed.

Southeast Asia and the Asian region harbour a particularly young population. In fact, the average age of people in Indonesia is 28 years. Companies and businesses looking to tap into the Southeast Asian region would therefore do well to tweak their marketing strategies towards the growing numbers of not only middle class consumers, but Millenials, who have different taste preferences and demands from the previous Baby Boomer generation.

Brand owners and manufacturer would thus need to be aware of the extensive use of social media and consumer reliance on mobile communications in the region. Although this trend is common around the world, three Southeast Asian countries rank among the top 10 users of Facebook (Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand), according to LEK Consulting Singapore in 2014; social media is therefore a valuable and essential communication channel between brands and consumers.

Consumers will always want to know exactly what goes into their food, where their origins are, whether the product has been tampered with, or whether the food or drink can still be consumed even past its best-before date—all this can already be told through the scan of a smartphone via various mobile applications, but the potential for even more product-consumer interaction is great and has yet to be fully explored.

he development of packaging materials is taking a unique turn in recent years, with more manufacturers and brand owners focusing on five major trends to optimise efficiency in packaging solutions, according to Hannu Alalauri, senior vice president at Renewable Packaging.

The first of these is to maintain basic functionality— protecting the product throughout the supply chain. For manufacturers, any sort of unique packaging or design, no matter how good, is of no use if it cannot protect the product to keep it shelf-ready, or maintain product quality. Packaging should also be easy for retailers to unpack onto shelves, as is for consumers to get the product within.

The second is to support brand value and packaging.

The average consumer only has an attention span of eight seconds, according to Statistic Brain, and brand owners have only these mere seconds to appeal to the consumer and influence their purchasing decisions. As such, packaging and what is displayed on it—words, slogans, colours, numbers—are highly critical.

Still, at a time where every brand owner is using flashy colours, unique designs and blaring words, it might actually be the quieter, simple, or plain designs that are more eye-catching to the consumers. Knowing how to balance between colour and design for each product would help brand owners gain an edge over their competitors.

The third trend of packaging today is of those that communicate the value of sustainability. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of need for sustainability from the procuring of ingredients to the material used in food and beverage packaging.

They would therefore be more inclined to buy products with sustainable packaging such as those that are either biodegradable, 100 percent recyclable, or made from recyclable material; consumers are therefore driving up the demand for sustainable packaging solutions.

In fact, today there exist many unique packaging materials for various product types.

One example is an agar-derived packaging from seaweed, created by design agency AMAM in Japan.

This material closely resembles plastic and has the potential to be used in all packaging applications where plastic is used today.

Another example is a bio-based plastic produced by Brazilian chemical company, Braskem, which creates this material from sugar cane and paper board. This material offers manufacturers a fully renewable package.

The fourth is packaging solutions that can help manufacturers reduce costs. Cost reduction can come in the form of the solutions (packaging), the process, or the features of the packaging. For example, if a certain plastic material uses only half the amount of material

to package a product than it did originally, this would help manufacturers save on costs for packaging material.

Solutions that optimise operations are the fifth trend for packaging today. This includes optimising supply chain and logistics processes, and/or having flexible and efficient packaging machines or lines.

Between catering to increasing consumer demands and improving efficiency of operations, packaging is becoming more complicated for manufacturers today.

Still, adapting to these are becoming the minimal expectations of these manufacturers in order for them to maintain or improve their positions in the market.

The idea of sustainability really forced its way to the forefront when the industry—and all other sectors including food and beverage—realised the very real possibility that there might be no future. This is in terms of materials, land, energy, and resources that we use.

In fact, as early as 2008, reports started surfacing that we were already then overusing our natural resources.

One by the Living Planet reported that humans were using 30 percent more resources than the Earth could replenish each year, which was leading to deforestation, degraded soils, polluted air and water, and dramatic declines in the populations of fish and other species.

Two planets would be needed by 2030 at the rate we were going then, the report warned.

Eight years on, and the consensus of the industries is still the same; we are still overusing our resources and worse still, the threat of food security is growing with every day. The estimated global population will reach nine billion by 2030, and experts are warning that it might be a challenge to feed the extra two billion people we would have gained by then.

As such, the food and beverage industry, as with other sectors, is seeking to find ways for greener operations—ways to optimise their operations in terms of energy efficiency, increase use of renewable energy, and reduce production of fossil fuel carbon emissions.

This can also mean to find ways to use less materials to create more, source materials responsibly, and use materials that pose as little impact to the environment as possible.

The controversy surrounding the use of plastic in the industry has been one that has been deeply discussed over the years. Conventionally, food and beverage manufacturers have used common plastics such as fossilfuel plastics that are derived from petroleum or natural gas, which require more fossil fuels and produce more greenhouse gases in their production.

With the spreading awareness of the need to minimise environmental impact, most food and beverage manufacturers have already switched over to forms of plastic that can be recycled such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), or have attempted to replace their packaging material with paper, for example. Many more today are seeking ways to find alternative material to

replace plastic and even paper especially for packaging, with the use of bio-based plastics, also known as bioplastics.

Bioplastics are typically derived from renewable biomass sources, such as vegetable fats and oils, corn starch, or microbiota. These plastics are designed to biodegrade in either anaerobic or aerobic environments as they comprise starches, cellulose, biopolymers and other material.

Many companies are up and coming in their

innovation for bioplastic materials and uses, and are improving mechanical, physical, chemical and thermal properties of their creations such that the material may suit more and more applications—possibly replacing plastic entirely in the near future.

It is likely that in the future we will still be using some kind of plastic for food and beverage packaging, or for other uses in the industry, but with the rapid advancements made today, it is hoped that the plastic we use will contribute to a greener cause.

The Ceia MS21 is a multi-spectrum metal detector

by Heat and Control that uses many frequencies, and simultaneously.

Conventional metal detectors, even three-frequency models, are only able to use one frequency at a time.

Sensitivity also has to be reduced to prevent false reject signals caused by salt, moisture content, or other product effect conditions that might generate these. Metal detectors therefore have a tendency for more error when it comes to inspecting products with strong product effects such as cheese, fresh meats and poultry.

With simultaneous use of different frequencies however, the detector is able to provide more sensitive metal detection for all magnetic and non-magnetic metals, and therefore allows for fewer product effect errors that would otherwise increase waste or generate false reject signals.

The detector comes with a one-button preview that enables users to instantly review product detection settings in order to simplify set-up and reduce errors. It also continuously tests and calibrates itself for consistent accuracy, reducing set-up time and inspection errors.

It can be used with conveyed, fall-through or pumped products, enabling a wide variety of products to be inspected. Also, the metal detector has a memory for over 500 products, which provides fast, error-free changeovers. Bluetooth connectivity facilitates remote programming and data collection.

14 Inspecting In Bulk Mettler Toledo’s X35 Series Bulk x-ray system offers a high-performance contaminant detection before further value is added to the product, thereby saving costs. The system is able to inspect small, medium and largesized packaged products, and a full range of inspection tools enable it to detect contaminants, regardless of their size, shape or location, whilst simultaneously performing product integrity checks. Purifying Air For Food Safety The Jimco Flo-D is an air-based purification system that enables automatic and chemical-free disinfection of surfaces and whole production areas for food and beverage manufacturing factories. Coming in a Mini version as well, the system now offers more mobility and suits use in refrigerated areas where there are often problems with yeast, mould and microorganisms.
