TYPES OF AID
GRANTS
Grant aid is “free money,” which means that you don’t have to pay it back. Grants are awarded to those students who demonstrate the most financial need and who satisfy all general requirements for federal aid.
SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships are a great way to fund your education. They are usually awarded based on special circumstances, such as grade point average, intended major, or economic background.
LOANS
Loans are a way to help finance your education. Undergraduate and graduate students, as well as parents of dependent students, may borrow money. The amount of money is based on class level, enrollment, cost of attendance, dependency status, and other resources. Money that is borrowed through loan programs must be repaid. To determine loan eligibility, you must file a FAFSA every year.
STUDENT EMPLOYMENT
Federal Work-Study: Need-based financial aid program funded by the federal government and EMU. Awards are earned and paid through the payroll process in the form of a bi-weekly paycheck. Due to limited funding, you’re encouraged to file your FAFSA early to be considered for federal work-study.
Regular Student Employment: For students who are not eligible for Federal Work-Study, regular employment is available for students who would like to work on campus.

An EMU degree is a big deal.
All undergraduate students pay in-state tuition. No out-of-state fees!
Each year, the Office of Financial Aid determines a budget/cost of attendance that projects estimated average costs for tuition, fees, housing and food, books, and other expenses.
Budgets are used to represent student differences with regards to residency, enrollment, and academic level and are based on full-time enrollment.

How to apply for aid.
From FAFSA to federal student aid, here’s what you need to know to navigate the financial aid process.
→
Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at studentaid.gov. Use EMU’s school code 002259.
→ To receive federal student aid, you must:
• Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
• Have a valid social security number (unless you’re from the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia or the Republic of Palau)
• Have a high school diploma, General Education Development (GED) Certificate, or pass an exam approved by the U.S. Department of Education
• Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a regular student working toward a degree in an eligible program at a school participating in the federal student aid program
• Make satisfactory academic progress toward a degree
• You must demonstrate financial need (except for unsubsidized direct loans)
→ Once you’ve submitted your FAFSA, you’ll receive your Student Aid Report (SAR) or FAFSA Submissions Summary by email 3-5 days after your FAFSA has been processed.
→ EMU will receive your data and determine your aid eligibility. Once processed, you’ll receive an award letter which will tell you the type of financial aid you are eligible to receive from federal, state, and institutional resources and how much you may receive.
