Dear Colleague,
Welcome to a new school year! I hope your summer was pleasant and filled with making lasting memories with family and friends! I started my role as Director of Admissions in October 2023. These last few months, I have been busy planning for this academic year. I look forward to collaborating with you and your colleagues as we work together to help students through the college selection, application and enrollment process.
Our admissions team is eager to connect with you and meet with your students. Over the summer we implemented Slate as our new CRM. We are excited to share with you ways in which you can utilize this tool to view your students’ admission status and merit-scholarship offers. I encourage you to create an EMU Slate account as soon as possible by visiting Slate.org.
There are so many phenomenal opportunities for your students to pursue their educational and career goals at EMU. We invite you to attend our Fall School Counselor Appreciation Luncheon on October 24, 2024 to learn about campus updates on academic programs, facilities, campus resources, and more. Visit enrollment.emich.edu/ register/luncheon to RSVP. Space is limited.
This year, we will continue to support College Application Month by providing a fee waiver for your students. Feel free to share the fee waiver code “MCAM” with your students during the month of October. Students can apply for admission at emich.edu/apply and then log into their Slate portal at any time to check the status of their application.
Thank you for all of the support and guidance you provide your students. The EMU Admissions team and entire community look forward to engaging with you this academic year to help students reach their full potential.
In Partnership, Dr. LaJoyce Brown
Director of Admissions

First-Year Students Eastern Michigan University Admission Requirements.
FOR APPLICANTS SEEKING TO ENROLL AT EMU DIRECTLY FROM HIGH SCHOOL
All of our admissions policies seek to identify the future success of our future students. Information about first-year application process can be found below
First-year Students
In an attempt to ensure opportunity and access for incoming students, Eastern Michigan University has a current Test Optional admission policy in place for incoming first-year applicants. This option is available and applies to incoming first-year domestic students entering through the Fall 2025. To be considered for test optional admission a student must do the following:
1. Apply to Eastern Michigan University at emich.edu/apply.
2. EMU uses a test-optional admissions model for first-year admission.
• A student with a cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 or higher will not be required to submit a standardized test score.
• A student with a cumulative high school GPA of 2.49 and below will be required to submit a test score.
3. Official transcripts are required for all admission consideration.
We admit students on a rolling basis and we typically notify you within 2–4 weeks of the time we receive all of your admissions materials.
The average student coming to EMU directly from high school has a GPA of 3.43. Please note that this is not the minimum requirement for admissions consideration.
If you have questions or would like to speak to an admissions advisor about your specific situation, visit emich.edu/meetthestaff to find your advisor or call 734.487.6453.

Career Everywhere in Eastern Michigan University’s College of Arts and Sciences.
What do you tell an advisee who wants to major in an arts and sciences field, but who wonders how a liberal arts degree will lead to a career after graduation? The good news is that a liberal arts education cultivates the skills that employers value most— like analytical thinking, creative problem solving, effective communication, empathy, teamwork, and leadership. However, students need some additional abilities to translate these fundamental skills into a career:
• Students must be ready to identify their career-relevant skills and give examples of using them.
• Students need the specific knowledge and key experiences required to be strong job candidates in their chosen fields.
• Students have to know how to seek employment.
Eastern Michigan University’s College of Arts and Sciences provides career coaching at no charge to its students and alumni, and the College offers two career preparation elective courses. But to reach every student, the College’s faculty are embedding career preparation into every major program.
The Psychology faculty created a one-credit class, Careers in Psychology, and made it a requirement for the major. Urban and Regional Planning and Earth Science added units on career preparation to core courses in their majors. The Philosophy faculty added optional concentrations in Environmental Justice, Law and Justice, Professional and Applied Ethics, Mind and Cognition, and Global Philosophy to the major. A goal of this revision was to help students see how the skills cultivated through the study
of philosophy can be directly applied in many fields, such as law, public policy, communication, and management.
To help students complete an internship in their intended career field, many programs allow students to include an internship experience in their major. The Environmental Science and Society program hosts an annual Internship Symposium to connect students with environmental organizations seeking to hire interns. Additionally, EMU lets students use their Federal Work-Study funding to complete an unpaid internship at a non-profit organization. English Language and Literature and Environmental Science and Society have created scholarships to support these students.
Programs also help their students to build relationships with alumni and employers. The Economics program brings employers to campus to meet their students. The Political Science / Public Administration Mentorship Program pairs current students with alumni who are now leaders in their field.
Helping students develop these career readiness skills has an additional benefit: When students can connect their studies to their career goals, they’re more motivated to complete their degree programs. EMU Career Coach April Calkovsky points out, “The College’s Career Readiness initiative is a way to support students in discovering themselves and the value of their EMU degree as it connects to and prepares them for career fulfillment and success.”
