Starting college is a fresh chapter in a student’s life—a chance to explore new interests, meet new people, and pave the way toward their dreams while also navigating a new environment, new expectations, and unfamiliar challenges. Adapting to this “new normal” can be both exciting and overwhelming, but they don’t have to go through it alone.

With the right support, strategies, and resources, students can confidently take on this new chapter and set the foundation for their academic and personal success.

• Teachers have flexible summers that they can use to travel, learn, spend time with family and friends, and recharge.
• Science teachers report having higher or equivalent overall job satisfaction compared to other STEM professionals.
• At year 15, the middle 50% of teacher salaries range between $68,000 and $114,000, nationally.
• Most teaching jobs have better retirement benefits than other jobs you can get with the same degree.
• There are student loan forgiveness programs and scholarships for math and science teachers.
• You can get a job almost anywhere in the U.S. or abroad as a science or math teacher.
• Behind every advance in medicine or technology is a teacher who left a lasting impression.
The Department of Teacher Education at Eastern Michigan University offers a variety of programs in teacher preparation to support students and their professional career goals!
• If a student wants to work with children birth to five, but are not wanting to become a certified teacher at this time, we offer the Children and Families program for those wanting to become a lead teacher in a Great Start Readiness Program, a Head Start, or any other private or public program serving children from birth to age five.
If a students wants to be an early childhood or elementary certified teacher, we offer lots of options!
Each of these pathways is tailored to develop a student’s knowledge and skills through a practice-based, community-embedded approach to learning to teach for the specific age group of a student’s choosing. While each of the programs supports a student’s development as a future educator to work with a diverse group of learners, several of the options below provide additional opportunities for those seeking to work more specifically with those with exceptionalities or those who are English Language Learners.
• The Early Childhood Comprehensive (Option 1) is for those wanting to work with young children ages birth through age eight. This program led to two endorsements: Birth-Kindergarten General and Special Education ZN endorsement and the PK-3rd grade ZO endorsement. This option is well suited for those seeking employment in a school or a child development center that requires teaching certification.
• The Elementary Comprehensive (Option 2) is the pathway for those seeking to become a certified elementary teacher in a school and leads to two endorsements in PK-3rd grade for the ZO endorsement and the 3rd-6th grade ZP endorsement.

• The Birth to Kindergarten (Option 3) is an option for those wanting to teach young children from birth to kindergarten and earn a ZN endorsement and who want to pair it with a Special Education or Teaching as a Second Language (TESOL) minor.
• Pre-Kindergarten to Third Grade (Option 4) leads to a teaching certificate and ZO endorsement for those wanting to teach youth ages 4-8, typically in a school setting. This option is designed for those wanting to pair a PK-3 focus with a Special Education or Teaching as a Second Language (TESOL) minor.
• Third to Sixth Grade (Option 5) leads to a teaching certificate and ZP endorsement for those wanting to teach those in grades 3rd-6th while also earning a Special Education major or a Teaching as a Second Language (TESOL) minor.
Have students who want to be a middle or high school teacher?
A middle school and/or high school teacher certification allows students to work with pre-teens and/or teenagers depending on the pathway they decide to take. The focus of this program is developing subject-content expertise while also supporting students in learning how to reach, develop caring, inclusive classrooms, and teach youth in engaging ways that support their growth and development.

The Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders
We have two undergraduate programs in our Department to share with you. For more information please contact: Jackie McGinnis, Ph.D., Department Head (I), jmcginnis@emich.edu
Communication Sciences and Disorders
By selecting the Communication Sciences and Disorders Major students will earn a Bachelor of Science that gives them the foundation to pursue a graduate degree for a rewarding career in Speech-Language Pathology or Audiology. The EMU Communication Sciences and Disorders Program provides exceptional academic and clinical preparation to students serving the local and global diverse communities. This foundation will empower them as professionals providing clinical services to and advocacy for individuals with communication needs or disorders, as researchers contributing to the knowledge base of the profession, and as faculty educating the next generation of speechlanguage pathologists. Our Faculty are actively involved in research in their various areas of expertise. We have a student organization that is very active in a variety of on campus activities. In addition to the major, students select a minor, typically in either special education or psychology. After completing the undergraduate degree at EMU, students can apply to our graduate program that offers opportunities for research, clinical experience and external internships in health care and school settings.
Special Education
By selecting the Special Education Major students will earn a Bachelor of Science in Special Education paired with a credential in Teaching and Learning (Early Childhood through Secondary). After completion of coursework, student teaching in both general and special education and required certification tests, candidates can teach in general and special education classrooms. Michigan legislation requires that a special education teacher be endorsed in a “category of disability”. At EMU, we offer the following categories for K-12 certification: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Cognitive Impairment, Emotional Impairment, Learning Disability and Physical Impairment/Otherwise Health Impairment. Special Education Majors at EMU learn the skills necessary for assessing, teaching and modifying instruction and curricula for students with disabilities This includes using research-based strategies to promote the development of language, reading, writing, spelling, calculating and thinking. Skill development continues as students learn to plan and implement instruction in a variety of settings and domains. Students will also learn how to develop and maintain collaborative relationships and partnerships with parents/ families/caregivers, educators, administrators, consultants and community service providers.
The College of Education and the Department of Special Education & Communication Sciences and Disorders has scholarships available for students, as of course does the University.
Family, Structure, Leadership, and Life-Changing Experiences in One Place
For over 130 years, the EMU Marching Band has been a source of pride, inspiration, and spirit, on the campus of Eastern Michigan University. It is the soundtrack of campus and is an outward example of EMU’s focus on inclusivity - student members represent virtually all majors that are offered, including 65% who are non-music majors, and over 100 different high schools from Michigan and a few other states.
The “Pride of Peninsula’s” family-centered environment focuses on creating an environment where students build deep relationships with each other, many of which turn into lifelong friendships and partnerships. With high expectations in performance and professionalism, a multitude of leadership opportunities, and a structured approach to learning that focuses on the importance of timeliness, healthy communication, meeting goals and deadlines, the EMU Marching Band truly offers its members lessons in being successful after graduation.
Creating life-changing experiences for its members and the local community is the number one priority for the EMU Marching Band. Through recent collaborations with local high school band programs, EMU Charter Schools, local jazz musicians, and most recently with the World-Famous Temptations, EMU’s Marching Band is setting itself apart from other universities and continues to be committed to providing the most high-quality and comprehensive performance and career readiness experience possible.

The Directors are always interested and available in talking to prospective students about all of the opportunities, experiences, and scholarships available to them.

Esports

Eastern Michigan University embraces each student as an individual, inside and outside the classroom. Understanding that a student’s success is often tied to nonacademic factors, programs like Esports can elevate and diversify an educational experience.
EMU Esports serves every student on our campus in two major ways:
1. Providing recreational & social opportunities that complement an academic schedule.
2. Leveraging the gaming industry as a vehicle for learning practical skills.
So, whether you’ve got an advisee who simply wants to game or an advisee who wants to get ahead - our Esports program can offer unique and individualized solutions!
Many EMU students will participate in competitive teams, and the best will receive scholarships to compete nationally. Our competitive teams practice and compete weekly on a preplanned schedule with a professional coach. Others who like taking their games slow often join one of our gaming clubs - all of which are fun and casual! The Eagle Gaming Club does a great job of hosting weekly Smash Brothers tournaments for anyone to enjoy.
Even students who aren’t gamers themselves can join our Esports program as an intern affiliated in any of the following academic programs:
• Marketing
• Arts Management
• Sports Management
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT ADVISING
• Graphic Design
• Digital Media Production
• Simulation, Animation, & Gaming
Esports student workers are given the resources to learn hands-on in a complex organization. In participating in programs like Esports, students build professional skills, a resume, and a portfolio that give them an advantage post-graduation.
Everything gaming and Esports related happens in our on-campus Esports Lounge, located on the second floor of the Student Center. Added in the Fall of 2024, this space has become a community hub for EMU students who enjoy any form of gaming. Equipped with a 25 PC station Esports floor, a console gaming zone, a broadcast studio,
and an internship work-study office, the Esports Lounge has a place for everyone.
Beyond the lounge, our Esports program hosts and participates in a number of exciting events on campus such as Scholastic Invitational and Gamers for Giving. The invitational brings together some of the best scholastic gaming teams in the region while Gamers for Giving raises over a million dollars each year during a single weekend of gaming.
To learn more about EMU Esports, visit our website at https://www.emich.edu/esports and or email the coordinator, Zach Lewis, zlewis7@emich.edu.
