I have seen the magazine grow in so many ways and I am truly grateful to have met many wonderful people within our Community who are there to help others on their journey to Wellness. As we are heading into the fall and winter months, this issue has focused on helping you keep your Health in good shape. The magazine is full of interesting articles, such as Salt Spa Season and the many benefits of experiencing a salt cave to keep away any winter cold & flu issues, and Sarah & Tim of All About Summa Salts with their extensive knowledge of growing various herbs and creating blends based on the seasons. This is just a couple of the articles that will keep you cozied up with a cup of hot herbal tea and a good book, we have even started a Book Review section in this issue. I would like to thank all my advertisers and contributors, along with my team who have been part of this magazine and we look forward to its continued success.

Spa therapies have existed since the classical times when taking a bath with water was considered a popular means to treat illnesses. Dating back to the mid-2nd millennium BC, the Greeks began spa regimens that formed the foundation for modern spa procedure and probably were among the first to “celebrate” Spa Season. Occurring at the beginning of Fall, Spa Season is the busiest time of the year for most spas and resorts around the east coast.

When Polish physician Dr Felix Boczkowski discovered that men working in the salt mines in Wieliczka, Poland suffered fewer respiratory problems than the general population, he attributed this to the salt aerosols being inhaled by the miners in the underground environment; as the workers were mining the salt (through chiseling, grinding and hammering at the salt), micro-sized salt particles were being dispersed

Salt Spa Season

By Ashton Ryan

It’s officially Spa Season in Florida, the days are briefer and the heavy moisture felt all summer is abating. The sun may be shining but beach season is over and our bodies may suffer during this shift from warm to cool weather. For so many, the summer season is a total reprieve, our bodies soak up that salty breeze, absorbing the nutrients found naturally along the east coast, energizing and regenerating our cells as we play, swim, lounge and enjoy all that summertime offers. Salt, an essential element for all animal life, is abundant here on Earth, but it still requires extraction from stone deposits or salty waters. The process of mining that salt can produce beautiful landscapes, including deep, stable caverns, multicolored pools of water, and geometric carvings. Some of these locations have even become tourist destinations, serving as concert halls, museums, and health spas touting the benefits of Halotherapy.

Melissa describes her salt spa on her website, “Salt therapy is both relaxing and beneficial to our overall health and an essential mineral to the human body. Salt therapy is a natural, drug-free therapy for many health conditions, especially respiratory-related. Our salt room is made up of pure Himalayan salt and utilizes a Halogenerator to blow dry, microscopic salt particles into the room. By sitting in a salt room for a prolonged period, low concentrations of these tiny salt particles are delivered where it’s needed most - deep in the lungs, where the salt then dissolves phlegm in the bronchial tubes and kills microorganisms that cause infections. The treatment works to reduce the basis of inflammation by destroying bacteria and strengthening the immune system”.

“a broom was sweeping away all the yuck in my lungs”.

LaCura Salt Spa has many more services to offer, including hot salt stone massage, swedish massage, deep tissue massage, myofascial, prenatal massage, day of beauty, lymphatic facials, body treatments, wellness workshops, microblading, microneedling, dermaplaning, organic facials, couples massage and and room rentals. There’s even a bonus feature for visiting LaCura Salt Spa, every shabby chic, hand painted piece of furniture and the funky, beachy art from local artists found hanging throughout the spa is available for purchase.

Considering that mining jobs were usually recognized as dangerous to life and health, salt miners seemed to thrive on good health. They rarely had any respiratory issues and also looked younger due to great skin appearance. Studying the horses used within the mines yielded the same results as the workers, the salt air was providing generative care with no side effects. According to www.saltsoftheearth.com, ‘during World War II, the Klutert salt caves in the German town of Ennepetal were used as shelter against heavy bombing. People remained in the caves for prolonged periods, breathing in the salt dust. German physician Dr. K.H. Spannahel noticed that those who had taken shelter in the salt mines appeared to have experienced relief from their respiratory problems.’

In 1958, Professor Mieczyslaw Skulimowski became the official physician of the “Wieliczka Salt Mine’’ and started regular treatment of patients in the salt chambers. Introduced in 1985, the first Halotherapy device was developed in Russia. The use of salt mines for therapeutic purposes developed in many countries including Poland, Russia, Belarus, Romania, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Slovakia and Ukraine before making its way to the USA. Predictably, in St Augustine, the salt spas attract more clientele during Spa Season as well. While only around 300 salt spas exist in the USA at this time, St Augustine, FL touts two options for those searching for a natural approach to self care.

In 2003, Melissa McCall, owner of LaCura Salt Spa in St Augustine, Florida had been suffering from a sinus infection for over seven months, had tried several antibiotics and was feeling she would never be well again before she, quite by chance, visited one of the two salt spas in St Augustine, FL. During her very first session in the salt spa, Melissa cried tears of joy as she felt her infection quite literally breaking up inside her head; within three weeks of consistent salt spa sessions, she was completely symptom free. Delighted with her own results, Melissa purchased the salt spa and has been witnessing remarkable results in her clients health. One client with COPD praises LaCura Salt Spa; after visiting the salt spa every day for a month, she reported that the salt spa increased her breathing by thirty percent. Another client had recently quit smoking and reported that he could breathe much more clearly after visiting the salt spa and it felt like,

towers, while air temperature is exactly 69˚F, creating the unique microclimate necessary for salt ionization consistent with the healing factors of Wieliczka. The spa also offers float tank therapy, infrared sauna, massage therapy, facials and even private yoga events

The Salt Spa has been renamed 811 Salt & Vine.

The spa is a natural healing, therapeutic, aesthetic, anti-aging, relaxation spa. The owner, Kristyn Cullis designs and constructs her own salt caves offering Halotherapy in the caves. The authentic salt caves are made of himalayan salt which covers the entire cave. Even the floor is salt. A halo generator blows salt into the room making it look like it is snowing salt during your session. Relax and unwind while receiving the health benefits of Halotherapy. The salt cave is antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral. It acts as an antiinflammatory, boosts your immune system, improves skin function and appearance, helps with sleeping conditions/sleep apnea, rashes, allergies, asthma, ear infections, COPD, smokers cough, snoring, bronchitis, cystic fibrosis and lots more.

The Salt Spa of St. Augustine offers Himalayan Salt Cave Therapy, a salt cave filled floor-to ceiling with over 25,000 lbs of Polish and Himalayan Crystal Salt. Humidity is created and maintained at the optimal level of approximately 60 percent by brine graduation

Salt & Vine is looking forward to bringing awareness

Inspired by the world famous Polish Wieliczka Salt Mine, which introduced Halotherapy to western civilization, the Salt Spa of St. Augustine looks forward to welcoming guests by introducing the European philosophies of natural wellness, relaxation, and the therapeutic power of salt.

Her thoughts when building this spa were to help others relax and remain well and heal while being able to enjoy a spa day with friends and family. The salt cave sits up to six people with heated massage loungers and comfortable bucket seats. It is a very relaxing experience. Some even take a nap during their session. They also offer other natural healing elements including her favorite, the Infrared sauna. The Infrared sauna has been a miracle healer for her as it helps with inflammation throughout the system, lowers blood pressure, decreases cellulite, amps up weight loss, relaxes muscle tissue, reduces and diminshes joint pain and rids the body of toxins. Amongst other elements at 811 Salt & Vine they offer leg compression massage, an oxygen bar, aesthetic services and a red light therapy bed. They are offering after hours bridal and birthday parties, and with their spectacular ocean views, they will soon be presented as a wedding venue.

Just in time for Spa Season, Flagler County‘s first Salt Spa, Essential Elements Spa has moved and expanded to 811 N. Ocean Shore Blvd., Flagler Beach, Florida.

The Salt Spa of St. Augustine was the first 5-star Halotherapy (salt therapy) health resort in Florida and ‘a dream come true’ says Beata Kosakowska, Founder of Salt Spa St. Augustine. Raised by health professionals in Poland, Beata is grateful for what she learned from her father, ‘for almost 50 years, he was passionately dedicated to treating patients using both conventional and alternative approaches. In many cases, the alternative approach was more effective long term, and without the common side effects of prescription drugs. In Poland, and the rest of Europe alike, the holistic approach is an integral part of regular health care, and a way of life for thousands of people’.

Below are some of the ways you can continue to have grace and to show grace to others.

• Give out the abundance of your heart. The fulfillment of being a giver as well as giving back to your community and your world will make your heart sing.

• Look forward to the promises of a better tomorrow, a bright future and know that you have the power to control your thoughts and actions.

Words From The Heart

• Practice yoga, pray and have a daily meditation practice.

Affirmation: “I am living a purposeful life filled with happiness, grace and ease.”

• Show kindness towards others with a simple smile, a warm embrace and softly spoken words which can greatly impact a persons’ day.

Graceful individuals seem to age better and stay younger looking because they tend to manage the stressful situations with ease. We all need to work on this for a better, healthier and happier life today and everyday.

Ihave to say that GRACE is one of my favorite words for many reasons. I love the word so much and if you’re a personal student of mine I have definitely shared the mantra with you - Remember to have “Grace and Ease.” It is a word that we all need to have at the forefront of our lives in order to continue living our best and most beautiful life.

I believe that having grace and being graceful impact not only who you are but how others view you.

I do believe that we learn how to have grace and to show grace to others as we continue to live out our lives. As we age, we learn more and more about how important it is to stay calm, cool and collected. We also learn how imperative it is to let the little things go, to forgive and to move through our life’s moments with faith knowing all will workout.

The definition of grace is poise, elegance, forgiveness, or a blessing. An example of grace is the way a beautiful, stylish person easily walks across a room. Another example of grace is the letting go of a past wrong done to you. One of my favorite examples of grace is the prayer said at the beginning of a meal.

• Inspire those around you to be better and to always look for the rays of sunshine through the clouds and the rain.

• Be thankful for the abundance of blessings in your life including your health, your happiness and your loved ones.

• Let go of any discouragement or disappointment but instead cherish your many beautiful moments, achievements and memories.

12

• Carry yourself with poise and confidence knowing that you are not in this world to please others, but to be an example of true grace.

Studying under renowned teachers, Michael and Lesley Tierra, world famous herbalists and Chinese Medicine teachers, Laurence graduated from the East West School of Planetary Herbology. Laurence also studied with many well-known massage teachers, bodyworkers, physical therapists, and osteopaths ultimately completing a post-graduate diplomate program with the Osteopathic College of Ontario, Canada.

“St. Augustine is a special place and its unique energy draws creative individuals from all over the world” says Laurence after spending over thirty years in the historic town.

“In this field, if you help people, they will support you, especially in this town; if you don’t help people, you don’t make a living in alternative medicine,” said Laurence when discussing how he has always felt supported by the interesting, free-thinking, sometimes odd folks who have found their way to the seaside city that he thinks of as a cross between Santa Cruz, California and Key West, Florida.

An exciting new product that Laurence has recently stocked and highly recommends is a PostBiotic supplement. Acting differently than a prebiotic or probiotic, postbiotics are excreted by probiotics (friendly bacteria) and eat prebiotics (more commonly known as dietary fiber) in the lower colon. Postbiotics may support your immune system, help prevent or treat diarrhea, reduce symptoms associated with irritable bowel diseases, and even reduce the severity of certain allergies.

A recommended blend called VM Tonic Tea is made and sold in the herbal shop and includes Alfalfa, which is rich in vitamin K, vitamin C, copper, manganese, folate, thiamin, riboflavin, magnesium, iron and Chickweed, which is also an herb rich in multiple vitamins. Nettle, which has been used for hundreds of years to treat painful muscles and joints, eczema, arthritis, gout, anemia and also harbors a variety of compounds that may reduce inflammation can be found in the tea as well. Also included in the VM Tonic Tea are Oat Straw which studies have shown increases nitric oxide in arterial walls. As a result, blood can flow more freely to the brain, providing a natural boost of energy. Another ingredient, Red Clover, is a powerhouse herb that stimulates the removal of toxins from the body, enhancing overall health.

Some of the common health-building remedies during the fall and winter season are ginger teas and herbal supplements of astragalus, elderberry and echinacea.

Every assistant at Healing Waters Clinic is studying some aspect of herbal healing, and is available to answer your questions and recommend a supplement during business hours. You can shop their online herb store where most orders are shipped within twenty four hours. As the cooler weather sets in, root vegetables, oatmeal, casseroles and other warming foods should be on the menu accompanied by warm teas and tonic herbs.

If you have ever used a birth doula you will see a very similar path in the process from the birth plan, to the actual birth to the visit at the home a few weeks after the birth to revisit the birth and answer any questions the new parents may have. I am so very grateful to be trained in this very new and emerging field of support during the dying

Mindfulsta.comPhotoCredit:INELDA

by Sherri CunninghamIhave been a Birth Doula for 19 years and have recently completed a 33 hour training course to become a End Of Life Doula or Death Doula. The word Doula means: a person trained to provide advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth. What INELDA (International End Of Life Doula Association) has done is take the birth doula model of advice, information, emotional support and physical comfort and apply it to the end of life process. My biggest take away from this training is that the last breath is exactly like the first breath and children need to be shown that death is a beautiful part of life and should not be hidden away from it. As a society we don’t like to talk about death. We don’t like to look at it, honor it or celebrate it. What a doula does at the time of the decision to no longer prolong life after a terminal diagnosis is to begin the process of honoring death in all its forms. We begin with a life review. Taking this time to get to know each other and learn what is important to our clients. What has been left undone or unsaid? Is there work to be done with a relationship? What accomplishments have there been? As the outside person that is not a family member or a spouse it allows a different type of conversation to be had. To be the buffer for what could be some very difficult conversations. We use deep active listening to put together information to help build a legacy project that is left behind for the family. This could be a scrapbook, personal letters, photos, a scroll, a garden, anything! We also explore what INELDA calls RUGS - Regrets, Unfinished Business, Guilt and Shame. The goal is to help our clients move through this work to a place of peace, and to honor the wishes of the client when they can no longer speak for themselves. The doula continues to be a centered and peaceful presence through the transition for both the client and any family/friends that might be present. A few weeks later, the doula returns to the family to do what INELDA calls Reprocessing. We talk about what they experienced and to check in to see how they are dealing with the loss of their loved one. This may take several visits but eventually leads to a closing prayer or event to honor the end of the services offered by the doula.

Sarah strives to waste as little as possible and is “always trying to find new ways to use things” in her salt blends. Most herbs are grown in their backyard and the rest come from Berry Good Farms in Jacksonville, FL. According to their website, “Berry Good Farms was created to provide the greater Jacksonville community with organic fruits, vegetables and herbs grown right here at NFSSE (North Florida School of Special Education) on our campus farm. Berry Good Farms’ vision is to provide sustainable food in an ecological manner through the training of our Transition Students and the compensated employment of our Post-Graduates, who continue to strive for independence and productivity in the community.”

Creating blends based on the seasons has been very enjoyable for Sarah and Tim and the feedback from their customers has been so very encouraging. Pink celery, tarragon, fennel and blue spice basil have all been incorporated into unique, tasty salt blends. “We like to keep a nice variety of herbs and peppers as it’s important for us to provide lots of options for our customers” said Sarah when showing her variety of pepper plants that she is so excited to infuse into her salts. A favorite blend, Italian Sausage was accidentally created when they grew an abundance of fennel and another favorite, Boujee Chicken came about due to an abundance of purple sage and origano lavender. When it comes to loving and giving back to their community, Sarah and Tim McElrea do it with all their heart and soul. Leaving the corporate world to start a new business while raising their first baby was not where they saw themselves but jumping right in to see where the path would lead them is what they did. Preserving herbs they grew in their backyard garden with salt was just a hobby that quite literally has grown to a full fledged career before their eyes and the couple is having a blast creating their products and selling them in local farmers markets.

All About Summa Salts

Some of their best sellers include the classic Ranch Blend and the Vampire Killer, which they describe on their website as, “Kill the vampires and save the city by infusing all your favorite dishes with this garlic

happy customer had to say: “Summa salts have a great flavor. Since they use fresh herbs you get a distinct flavor and not a muted down taste. Added bonus: the shakers they come in don’t dispense too fast and help your salt last longer!”

Introducing cocktail salts has been another tasty and successful venture for the duo; working with Shauna of Thyme Flies Garden, they have created a ‘spicy margarita’ with the Summa Salts ‘jalapeno’ blend used for the rim. Looking into the future, Sarah and Tim plan to establish a non-profit to teach gardening classes and offer therapeutic counseling, “ Rhiannon’s Garden will be a safe space of nature”. You can find these exquisite blends online through their website www.summasalts.com or shop in person every Saturday at The Riverside Arts Market in Jacksonville, FL or every other Sunday at The Atlantic Beach Farmers Market.

Lymph Lymph Lymph

What is the lymph system? Our amazing lymph system removes metabolic waste but it also scans for pathogens that could make us sick and is the prime driver for our immune system.

26

• Exercise – on land and in water

• Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

• Breathing exercises

There are many reasons but in the month of October I like to point out how it helps people who have had breast cancer surgery that included sentinel node biopsies.

• Compression garments/bandages by Lenore Welty

Some of the patients who have lost lymph nodes when cancerous tumors are removed can have swelling in the years following their surgeries. Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) can help redirect the lymph fluid that starts to gather in the arms of some breast cancer survivors. If there is an issue or damage to the lymph system the body swells and holds on to lymphatic fluid which can be very uncomfortable; this can affect mobility and daily use of a limb. When an ankle or knee swells after injury that is the lymph system reacting to an injury, extra fluid is being sent to the area to stop movement to allow healing. Long term Lymphatic swelling can also occur from genetic causes such as primary lymphedema or lipedema. How can the lymphatic system be stimulated?

• Walking and regular movements of the body

If you have ever scraped your skin and seen a golden fluid seeping out you have experienced lymph fluid. The system is made up of a variety of vessels – capillaries, nodes, trunks and ducts; as well as lymphatic organsspleen, thymus, adenoids and tonsils – that act as the early warning systems to start an immune response. Why should you care about the lymphatic system?

The wonderful thing is that the lymphatic system isn’t very deep in our body and we can stimulate it with our hands by doing manual lymphatic drainage (MLD). This is not as deep as massage, only the skin is moved, and is easy to do on yourself with proper training. While teaching a client to do MLD on herself I saw her allergy swollen eyes start to resolve before she had completed a full body treatment. I have helped a client who had an arm start to swell - 5 years after losing lymph nodes to breast cancer surgery - learn to manage the situation on her own after a couple of treatments and fitting a compression garment. I am so excited to share my knowledge and teach others how to take back the care of their own body. Being able to affect the lymph system is a fantastic way to care for yourself and is a strong tool to have in your self-help toolbox. Lenore Welty went into massage therapy to help people have a better understanding of their bodies and how to keep them healthy. After finishing her initial massage training she attended a 10 day course on ¨How to work with the Lymphatic System¨. Lenore said it was life changing. Learning how to treat this amazing system excited her, because it is an area that isn´t well understood, but is easy to work with if you are properly trained. She realized after finishing the course that she had an amazing skill at her fingertips and has been sharing her knowledge and experience ever Lenoresince.Welty offers manual lymphatic drainage sessions and trains others to do self-MLD You can find out more at www.weltywellness.com 904-501-5223

Am I too old?

Although I have never been a fan of people saying they are too old to follow their dreams, I totally understand. When I think back to when I was a child, I had really big dreams for myself. Admittingly, I may have had one or two dreams of becoming a pop star, just saying. Realistically, I always knew that I wanted to have my own business and help people. Then somewhere between then and in my twenties, I lost sight of those dreams. I began to believe how others defined my life. I jumped right into adulthood and started to get so busy with my day to day routines that I forgot what it was all for. I allowed them to tell me what my future was going to look like. I share this because going after our dreams at any age is scary. There is definitely risk involved and none of us can predict the future. Now, I too understand that sometimes life happens like starting a family. Maybe your parents become ill and you become their caretaker. Maybe you are working somewhere you dislike and don’t know how to leave. Whether we are on the roller coaster of life going up or coming down, we can’t just change it all when we want to. What we can do is pause for reflection. We need time to think about our journey in life and what we want it to be. How long have you been living your life with your head down on autopilot? We have all been there more than once so please don’t feel bad if you are there right now. I want to encourage you to pick your head up and take a look around. Are you happy? Are you where you want to be? Do you love what you do? If the answer is no to one or all of these questions, you might have some work to Ido.think it’s important to share why I am writing about this. I began working in the real estate industry in my early thirties. Can you believe, I talk to people often who are also in their thirties, who feel they are too old to begin a new career. Crazy right? Crazy or not that is where some people are. What I hear when people say this is, they would rather settle in life than go after their dreams.Let me be perfectly clear here, real estate was not my dream. Yup, I said it. I didn’t get into

By Melissa Cruz

28

29 real estate because I knew so much about it, or even because my family was in the industry. It all stemmed from not wanting to pick my family or a career one day. It stemmed from the impact I knew I could make on someone’s life. That’s where the magic truly started happening.Youknow what’s funny, I am not originally from Florida. I am just a girl from New Jersey who took a risk in moving to Florida alone not really sure where life was going to take her. Let me be honest, I relocated in my mid twenties. I can assure you that real estate was not even on my mind as a career. I do want to point out that the biggest risks I’ve taken in my life have netted me the best results and experiences.

www.gamechangerrealty.com904-679-2374

So reader, if you are finding yourself needing a change, do it! If you are finding yourself stagnant, pause for reflection. Allow yourself to dream big and make a plan. This will give you an opportunity to then work backwards on how you will achieve it. What does working backwards mean? I’m glad you asked. It means you are looking at the bigger picture of what your dreams are and setting targets and deadlines for when you will achieve each of them. For example, I want to travel to Spain in five years. Working backwards in this scenario means I will set aside 10% of every paycheck for the trip. This would allow me to accumulate all the funds I need for my trip in four years, while also giving me a year’s time to plan. I want to encourage you to take that dream job, start that new business, move across the country, heck move across the world! Don’t let age be the reason why you don’t pursue your dreams. Think about it, even if you are 50 years old right now reading this and you live until 90, that is 40 more years to live!!! Make those years count.

Lastly, I’ll leave you with a quote I came across from the book titled Halftime, “If the first half of your life you found success, make the second half of your life be of significance.”

Fast forward to six years later I am still in the real estate industry but now as part owner of a new brokerage called Game Changer Realty. I am also a coach to real estate agents all across the country with The Locker Room. I would never have imagined being here today as that young lady years ago.

Meet Reggie of Alpines Drip-in Udders Farm

While she sells most of the goat milk to a local dairy farm, in the fall Reggie loves to make chevre and aged cheese, her favorite is pepper jack and cheddar and they take around four months to perfectly age. Her goat’s milk also helps farm animals with skin issues, taken both topically and externally.

After her son and husband shared their new favorite milk after visiting Terk’s Acres Dairy Goat Farm in St Augustine, Reggie learned all about the many benefits of goat milk and within months, they were goat owners. Coconut and Celebration were the first of the flock, all registered Alpines which are known for being superb milkers. In order to continue producing milk, Alpine goats must be bred every two years and Reggie is always there to assist during the births; the one year old twins, Dixie and Coco-nut are the babies of the farm at the moment and just love being pet and loved on. Reggie explained that her goats were a bit picky; every morning and evening, Reggie milks her goats and treats them to grains which must be the correct brand or they refuse it and then the entire flock eats orchard and alfalfa hay which must be green or they will push it to the ground and not eat it. Reggie and her family have learned about how each goat has their own personality and they always make sure they are friendly to people before they are sold.

Reggie recently helped a pre-teen suffering from skin issues see results within days after using the goat milk soap that she creates from goat milk, olive oil, palm oil, coconut oil, castor oil, shea butter, cocoa butter and coconut fragrance.

By Ashton Ryan 2016 was the year that Reggie Hibbard of Alpines Drip-in Udders Farm discovered her love for goats, their milk and the products that she could create using their milk.

Goat milk is also easier for your body to digest than cow’s milk and actually absorbs within 30 minutes instead of two hours like cow’s milk. Goat’s milk has been known to improve good cholesterol levels as there are nearly twice as many beneficial fatty acids in goat milk as can be found in cow milk, which may mean that our cholesterol balance is safe if it is consumed. By balancing our essential fatty acids in the body, we can prevent atherosclerosis, stroke, heart attack, and other coronary complications. The high potassium levels in goat milk also help reduce blood pressure, as potassium is a vasodilator that relaxes blood vessels and relieves tension on the cardiovascular system and according to organicfacts.net, “Goat milk contains an enormous amount of zinc when compared to human milk. Zinc is a vital mineral for the maintenance of healthy skin, wound healing, and is directly linked in innate and adaptive immunity.”

Wellness on the Water

Just a few miles from the historical downtown St. Augustine sits a quaint peninsula; since the late 1970’s, families have been building their dream businesses in Camachee Cove. This marina basin has endured dozens of hurricanes since two brothers, who were just looking for a warm place for year-long boating, developed the land and helped to establish this now thriving community. Around 1.5 miles long, Camachee Cove has its own infrastructure, including a water plant and has become a place for residential and resort condos and fine homes with a shopping area concentrating on the interests of boaters.

Receiving the designation of ‘ASA Outstanding Sailing School’, the St. Augustine Sailing School

By Ashton Ryan

According to the article by Tom Neale in Soundings, a magazine all about sailing and boats, “Before the Camachee Project, some might say that Camachee Cove wasn’t much more than a mudhole in the marsh beside the Tolomato River. It was just a work area with some docks. The brothers with a vision began their huge task - planning, dealing with local politics, engineering, meeting environmental regulations, raising money and more.”

Today, Camachee Cove is home to several family owned and operated businesses who strive to create unique and memorable experiences for those who visit the cove. Nestled in this coastal hub that welcomes visitors year round is St. Augustine Sailing and Yacht Sales by Rose Ann Points. They are described on their website as a “premier destination for unique experiences, in-depth lessons, diverse membership options, and sailboat ownership expertise” while their stellar reviews from happy sailors describe the positive and sometimes life changing experiences with this family crew.

While furthering her sailing education, Rose Ann met Chuck Points, who was her instructor at the time. Rose Ann describes her husband as the most respectful and thoughtful man, whose proposal at The Lightner Museum was as scrupulously thought out as it was surprising to her. Since 2017, Chuck, Rose Ann and her three kids have operated in Camachee Cove, with plans to expand, within the cove, in the very near future. Living with her three kids on a Morgan OutIsland Ketch for thirteen years contributes greatly to the wisdom Rose Ann is able to impart on so many of their sailing journeys. Rose Ann has constructed many team building programs, with the Women on the Water program designed ‘to enhance the lives of women through education, practical application, and access to sailing vessels to develop skills to sail with confidence’, she hopes to help with the process based upon what she wishes she knew when she bought her first boat in 1996.

ADVENTURE IS CALLING... OUR CAPTAINS ARE ANSWERING... LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR SAILING LESSONS AND MEMBERSHIPS TODAY

34 offers beginner lessons, ASA certified lessons and private lessons. Testing the waters, so to speak, with their Intro to Sailing and Learn the Ropes courses is a perfect choice for beginners interested in learning more. St. Augustine Sailing offers a newer fleet of boats including seven monohulls and two catamarans, all operated by professional and experienced captains and sailing instructors. When describing the various experiences offered, Rose Ann wholeheartedly believes that “the fun begins where the land ends”. From fully customizable private charters to corporate team building adventures on the water, Chuck and Rose Ann take the time to get to know each of their clients to ensure an optimal experience. Surprise proposals, anniversaries and intimate weddings as well as a three hour, four course sunset dinner cruise with a personal chef are offered for those looking for a unique and memorable event on the water.

Right around the corner in the cozy marina is another family owned and operated business, Florida Water Tours, which includes their nonprofit program, Florida Water Warriors. Utilizing combined experience in marine science, education, and boating is what makes this family business stand out. Quoting Baba Dioum on their website, “In the end we will conserve only what we love; we will love only what we understand; and we will understand only what we are taught” clearly sums up the objective of owners Jessica and Mike Jadick as well as educators Kristie Corrigan and Kevin Jadick. Brothers, wives and a mother/grandmother are all a part of the daily operations at Florida Water Warriors, offering community science tours which are open to the community (all ages welcome), summer camp and group educational tours. When going on an educational trip, students will do wildlife logging, take water samples and test for temperature, ph, salinity, look at water clarity and take a plankton sample to put under the microscope. The data that they collect really matters as Florida Water Warriors partners locally, nationally and internationally, sending data to larger scientific studies. This data is then used to monitor water quality, such as those harmful algae blooms you may have heard about.

Submitting water samples to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is just one way that the Water Warriors contribute to helping keep our waters clean. According to the National Environmental Education Fund, environmental concern is on the decline. Americans are overwhelmed by environmental problems and don’t feel empowered to take action. Environmental Education is the missing step to encourage students to protect our natural world and Florida Water Warriors aim to fill gaps in public

35 knowledge, encourage pro-green behaviors, engage people in environmental issues, catch our students up on a global level and get families outdoors.

While cruising, some of the views that you will see are the St. Augustine Bayfront, The Castillo de San Marcos (The Fort),The Mission Nombre de Dios (The Big Cross), The Bridge of Lions and The St. Augustine Lighthouse.

Stating, “over many decades of using essential oils, I have learned which essential oils work on the body, the brain and the emotions”, Maggie has seen results of using essential oils and conducted research for six published books, dating back to the early 1980’s. Her recent Nurse Stress Project yielded positive results

Quoting Caroline Myss, “Do you choose to share your suffering or your wisdom” towards the end of the book is an open question for the reader yet Thia’s answer is obvious after this optimistic and helpful guide to living our most sacred life. Thia is available for individual spiritual life coaching sessions in person and online to ‘help people excavate their buried blocks to living a joyful and empowered sacred life’.

Within the foreword, Thia states, “The time has come to merge spirituality into modern life and to learn how to put sacredness back into our daily lives” and her manual is clearly written with these intentions.

From the first glance at the cover of A Call to Sacred Living, most readers of spiritual genres will feel a connection to the author Thia, as her friends affectionately call her.

Nhat Hanh “Walk as if you are kissing the Earth with your feet” in the Personal Journey Workbook section of the book is the eloquent direction one needs when attempting to slow down and go within.
